Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s.
But by the time of Hootenanny's "Color Me Impressed" and "Within Your Reach," something magical was clearly happening within Westerberg's songwriting and the band at large, even if it was largely inspired by terminal boredom, perpetual discontent, no small amount of alcohol--and an indifference to success that was one of their greatest charms. Within two years they'd produce one of the decade's--and perhaps rock history's--most compelling albums with Let It Be and the indie movement's first grassroots anthem in "Unsatisfied." They followed it up with Tim, a collection where Westerberg seemed able to conjure similar generational marching orders ("Here Comes a Regular," "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial") with preternatural ease; enraptured rock critics probably thought harder about his music than he ever did. Though highlighted by such gems as "Alex Chilton," "Skyway" and such pop-smart swan songs as "I'll Be You" and "Merry Go Round," the Mats' third act dissolved into the expected, if equally star-crossed solo career for Westerberg and the tragic death of Bob Stinson, events which can't help but cast a melancholy shadow over the unexpectedly gritty new old stock recordings "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The ragged and glorious alt-rock of The Replacements made them one of the greatest and most iconic American bands of the 1980s, and inspired countless groups to come. Fronted by lead singer, pianist/guitarist, and principal songwriter Paul Westerberg, these heroes of post-punk/pre-grunge rock `n' roll fused garage band greatness with powerful pop beauty. Fueled by both thrashing energy and a lyrical and emotive sonic flow, The Replacements' kamikaze live shows and richly textured albums made them music legends.

Love from Minneapolis.......2007-03-25
How can anyone who lives in the muck of a society that prizes commerce, populism, media savvy, and dumbed-down entertainment above all else be surprised how little popular success or money or fame the Replacements achieved in their career? But our same American culture of mass-produced cr*p-by-committee fertilized their existence, out of which sprang this wondrous musical art, an art that is nevertheless woefully underrepresented in this single CD.
Not to bleat too much, but how does Rhino justify the omission of Androgynous and Swingin' Party, which, in all of their weird, surreal, organic, raw, sloppy beauty, epitomized the immediacy that helped make Let It Be and Tim the greatest back-to-back albums by any artist in the 1980s? These songs only get better with repeated listening, unlike the Mats' pre-Let It Be punk efforts that sound like the kind of speed metal that gives skateboarding fanboys hard-ons but grows increasingly tiresome with age.
It is funny to me that as their music matured and became more melodic and interesting, many of these same fanboys accused the Mats of selling out. That instinct to keep bands stuck in perpetual adolescence always drags down great music, but thankfully, Westerberg and Co. resisted, although at the unfortunate loss of a bandmate.
Despite missing some vital tunes, I still give this album five stars for Rhino's good sense to include Answering Machine and Here Comes a Regular, and because it is still the Replacements, who even at their worst could puke out better music than the soulless, high-polish, overproduced dreck that wins Grammy awards. If there is any justice, the Mats will be fast-tracked into the RnR Hall, thus affording them the opportunity to give the middle finger to industry tastemakers who overlooked them in their prime.
What, yet another Mats compilation album?.......2007-01-16
Yeah, Yeah, this has the Twin Tone recordings that All For Nothing did not have. Sure, that makes this a better compilation of hits (what hits?) album. However, where All For Nothing had a disc of rairities, this one hopes to entice Mats fans with two new recordings. Uhh, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Paul released like four (at least) solo albums since leaving the Mats (one could argue that the last Mats album was a Paul solo album)? I guess, Paul's solo works are different when he attaches the Mats name to it? So, uhhh, why exactly should you buy this CD? Well, if you are a fan and already have all of their stuff, there is no reason to buy this CD. I mean, come on. Chris was so indifferent about this project that he did not even bother playing drums on the two new cuts and Bob is dead. What, did you really miss hearing Tommy's bass-playing that much? Listen to some GnR for crying out loud. LOL
A Great Best-of.......2007-01-11
I'm going to keep this short and sweet: The Replacements are a "glorious footnote" in the history of rock music, a band that didn't sell enough to make an impact when they were together (at least on the superficial charts of the Eighties), but I guarentee every indie band that followed had a record or two and practiced "Can't Hardly Wait" or "Kiss Me on The Bus" to learn their instruments.
So if you're wondering what all the fuss is about, pick up this disc. I owned Hootenanny for a while back in the day, but foolishly let it slip out of my hands. So when I saw this disc, I had to get it. You can't understand alternative rock without the Replacements, REM, Joy Division, and Mission of Burma.
Do yourself a favor and get this, you won't regret it.
One Historic CD.......2006-12-19
For a compilation, this CD is awesome. It follows the Replacements from their punk rock roots to their more polished sound (lyrics and music). One of the best aspects of the Replacements was their refusal to apologize for not being famous rock stars. Sure, the critics loved them, and LET IT BE is on many top spots of top rock and roll albums of all time (as well it should be). Still, they never found the ultra-glamorous rock star lifestyle that so many seek. And their music is better for it.
The best way to listen to this is on a long, autumn drive on backroads, with the windows down and the volume loud. If you still have one of those archaic tape recorders, record a compilation tape and throw in some greats from this album. It only gets better with age.
And to address my own review title, I wish this had been two CDs. Or three.
Great one disc Best of, Excellent with 2 new songs, but so short........2006-12-05
This ablum is the cream of the Replacements catalog, but its hard not to want all of their music on this. It does not hit their twintone years, which I am suprised has not been done yet (the did it for soul asylum). But, this covers their sire years well, and is greatly complimented by the best of Paul Westerberg CD. A good starter CD, but also check out the "all for nothing/nothing for all" greatest hits released years ago, 2 cds of music with the second disc being B sides and rare recordings. You'll want all the replacements Albums after you get this one anyway, their addicting.

Matthew Sweet's melodic hooks fit so perfectly inside his rhythm grooves that together they acquire an irresistible logic. Sweet's Beatlesque confections avoid sentimentality thanks to the streetwise toughness he gleaned from his connections to such New York punk bands as Television and the Voidoids. If Sweet's melodies evoke an optimistic yearning for love, the words suggest that such connections are hard to come by. Sweet's debt to the Beach Boys is superficially obvious on the hot-rod tempo of "Come to California" and the amusement-park flavor of "Make Believe." Sweet really captures the essence of Brian Wilson's art, though, on songs such as "Behind the Smile," where he admits, "I haven't been a good friend for a long, long time; you know I wasn't happy behind the smile." Countering this confession are swelling, soaring harmonies that suggest that friendship and happiness are still the goals. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Shocked at the positive reviews this album has received.......2004-06-03
This is the most disappointing album I have ever purchased. Not just because it is bad (it is), but because it came at a time when Matthew Sweet was coming off an album with 2 great singles and he was finally getting played on MTV and the radio. I felt sure that if he followed up 100% Fun with another album of equal quality to his previous three, he would surely reach a new level of success. Alas, instead Matthew Sweet went off the deep end, and turned to gimmicks instead of quality songwriting and production values.
So, why is this album so bad? First, because it is too short. The songs feel undeveloped, and there are too few of them. Second, because of the production. It just doesn't sound good. It sounds very...cheesy. The guitars sound weak, and there are too many synthetic sounds. Sweet wanted this album to sound like the demo tapes he made in his own home, because his family and friends would tell him they liked the sound of the demo tapes more than his studio albums. I guess this just goes to show you that sometimes people are sometimes blinded by their close proximity. Thirdly, the songwriting just isn't what it used to be. Many of the songs are awkward and irritating.
On top of the general lack of quality of the music, the cd I purchased (when it first came out) had a glitch with the way the tracks were edited, so that each song would begin at the end of the previous track.
I was, and still am, a huge Matthew Sweet fan, but even I have to admit that BSoM was the beginning of the downhill trend in Sweet's career. There are a few good songs on it (literally two or three), but it really was a big gigantic missed opportunity for Matthew Sweet.
A Masterpiece of power pop.......2003-11-10
This is a wonderful album unjustly underrated. Songs like "Into your drug", "Where you get love" or "Come to California" are some of the best songs of the career of Matthew Sweet.
Great hooks, memorable melodies, upbeat rhythms, sensitive ballads and rich influences of Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., Beach Boys or Neil Young. Splendid!!
A Grower on Mars.........2003-05-21
I agree with many that this album isnt as great as "Girlfreind" and "Altered Beast" but if you keep listening to it the songs will grow on you despite the flaws. Brendan O'Brien's over-compressed production takes a lot of the bite out of Sweet's complex arrangements - some of these songs sound like rough demos than finished productions.
Though Matthew has the gift of melody, a few of the songs sound like they were quickly written. Some would have been much better having a longer second verse, a third verse, or a middle eight.
The biggest problem with this disk is that missing of guitarists Quine and Lloyd - their snarling guitar work that made "Girlfriend" a Power Pop classic is sorely needed around here!
Am I the only one?.......2001-07-22
I've read the reviews of this CD, and disagree with many of them. Sweet has set the bar so high, it just isn't going to happen to recreate Girlfriend, so forget about it. That doesn't mean that he can't still put out damn fine music, which he has with Blue Sky On Mars. No one has mentioned my favorite song of ALL TIME: "Behind the Smile". How many of us haven't been a good friend when we should have been, like when we review great music? Buy this CD and enjoy it!
Good Album.......2000-11-19
One of his better albums. Enjoy it more than Altered Beast, less than Inside, about as good as In Reverse. Experimental pop feel.

When you hear this Los Angeles-based group led by former Double Naught Spies member Rick Hromadka, you'll probably think that Jeff Lynne took members of Jellyfish, Cheap Trick and ELO into the studio and came out with this pop masterpiece. Whimsy songs about space, love and well...life on Maple Mars. 12 tracks on this 2001 Permanent Press release. Powerpop at it's best!!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2004-03-03
Should have written something sooner, but when the album came out, I just walked across the street and told Rick how great it was. Rick and his family were our neighbors for many years. Many a night he would sit in his garage practicing a new song on his guitar or working on new lyrics.
Just plain good music and just an overall nice sound.
All the best Rick, I always knew you'ld make it big....
Bucketfull Of Brains.......2003-07-21
Welcome To Maple Mars opens with the spoof live show sound of the title track. Strong, hooky, loud, spacey, with vocals on vocals. It's powerful stuff. Thereafter the album occasionally slips into the Pet Sounds-DIY netherland that has already been (and continues to be) well charted by plebt of other LA artists, That's not to say that it ain't fun, 'cause it is!
Ex-Double Naught Spies man Rick Hromadka, who more or less is Maple Mars, writes sway-inducing tunes and he's not afraid to let rip with some heavy duty guitar sounds - which is where his approach differs from most of the LA pack. In fact the searing noise makes the fourth track, Souvenir, a real standout. Other picks include All Brand New, with it's rumbling bass and jangling guitars, the hard-edged rocker Perfect Song, and the two tracks, Fly and Afterglow, recorded with Mr. Cloud Eleven Rick Gallego. (The bonus track is cool too.) The more I listen to the CD the more I find to like about it. Well worth shelling out for.
Maple Mars is awesome!.......2002-10-04
"Maple Mars songs have been played on ER, Third Watch, Power Rangers and Sweet Valley High. Listen to Rick Hromadka, singer/guitarist, singing "The Perfect Love Song" and it is just that! "Afterglow" is another one of my favorites. It is so surreal. I highly recommend this CD.

The pulse of the Replacements offers up a cool rocking disc that proves America's greatest guitar band wasn't just the Paul Westerberg show. "Outer Limits" and "Monkey See" underline the claims of numerous critics that hail Mars as an original with a gift for quirky songs and great hooks. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Stealing Paul's Thunder.......2006-02-07
Paul Westerbergh can always smile and say he outsold his former buddy Chris Mars all he wants. Of course, Paul had a lot more money behind him. However, when comparing Chris and Paul's solo works, this album is vastly superior to anything Paul has done. Real catchy hooks and sharp lyrics will have you listening to this album over and over. How unfortunate that Paul's ego trip caused him to ignore Chris' suggestion while both were still with the Mats, they could have produced such great music.
A Great Album Rediscovered.......2005-07-19
I just got this album on cd today. I originally bought the album on cassette and I recently read an article about the Minneapolis Music Scene and I remembered how much I loved this album when it first came out. This is a no frills rock album with some good hooks and some very overlooked rock songs. The killer cuts on this album are " Reverse Status", "Popular Creeps","Monkey Sees", and "Outer Limits". " Monkey Sees" is hands down a great simple rock song. There is really not a bad song on this album. It flows very well from beginning to end. Steal this album if you have too.
Finally, a former "Mat" that does not embarass the band!.......2005-03-09
Everybody was so sure that Paul Westerbergh was the talent behind the Replacements and that he would go on and release solo efforts that had that Replacements' sound. But Paul was the problem with the Replacements. He was the driving force behind the two worst 'Mats albums ever (the last two). And what do you know, Chris Mars comes out and releases one EXCELLENT album! I love every song on this album, especially "City Lights on Mars" and "Popular Creeps." This sounds like Replacements, before Paul ruined them!
Wonderful record.......2003-11-21
I love this disc. It's better than any of Westerberg's solo work, though it disappeared from sight while Paul got all the press. Witty, unpretentious power pop. I particularly like "Reverse Status" and its take on rich kids pretending to be poor.
Good Solid 3 Stars +.......2003-03-03
Comparisons to the Replacements will be inevitable, since Mars was that band's drummer. Replacement fans will be pleased, if not quite blown away with "Horseshoes and Handgrenades." The songwriting here shows Mars to be close to former bandmate and Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg in lyrical wit, melodic pop leads, and catchy hooks. His voice is a bit raspy and lacks the range and vocal nuance of Westerberg's but is up carrying the material, if not taking it a step higher. Mars plays most of the instruments except bass, and again shows himself to be accomplished beyond the drum kit in showcasing the melodies and turning the hooks. The more I listened the better I liked this set of tunes and Mars' treatment of the material. For Replacement fans, this is a worthwhile addition to your collection. For those seeking an introduction to that band and its players, I'd recommend "Tim" or "Pleased to Meet Me," both masterful examples of power pop.

"White Patty Rap" alone makes it worthwhile !.......2006-04-12
This was the fourth and last album by Chris Mars. Chris is so now into his successful art career that it is doubtful that he will do anymore music, which is a shame. Certainly a Replacments tour would be cool, but I love his solo stuff just as much as the Mats. This CD is a little different from his first three and starts off with probably Chris's most comedic song, "White Patty Rap," which mocks the suburban white-boy rap movement. When I first played this album, I replayed "White Patty..." six times before allowing the next song to play. I still play it over and over. Not to say the other songs are not strong, they are. You do have some common themes at work, in particular Chris's infatuation with his brother's mental condition. Moreover, when you open up the CD jacket there is a great Mars' drawing. A very good album, maybe not as good as "Horseshoes...," but very good.
Innovative and Fresh !.......2005-03-09
Another creative and rockin' album by the former Replacements drummer. Gives yet further proof, that although he was not the dominant voice in the Replacements, when it comes to the former Mats, he has turned out the better albums.

Let's Rocket To Mars!.......2004-03-14
After spending some time "undercover" as one of the Double Naught Spies and the Maple Mars' debut album a coupla years ago, Rick Hromadka comes back with his best work to date.
Instead of the occasional programmed rhythm, taking away a part of some of the songs from the debut, Circular Haze is the work of real men in its entirety.
Not unlike most of fellow L.A. power-pop scenesters, the Maple Mars sound is all wrapped up in product ional sophistication, be it the rocking little tunes full of Jellyfishin' Beatle references like First Chick In Space and Golden People or an "utopist" take on some of Brian Wilson's late '60s teenage symphonies, which is Undiscovered ... And speaking of Brian, The Soft Carousel might easily pass for an unreleased "pet sound", unearthed through the recent, Wondermints-backed tour.
Some of the songs (Walk Of Fame, Silver Spy Satellite...) bring to mind/ears some of the top Swedish power-popsters like The Merrymakers (another Jelly-hint) or Dorian Gray (also a "Merry-made" production) but if you want an unbeatable commercial potential of the highest order, take Good Time For A Friend, capable of making the crowd go crazy on a hot sunny day of any of the summer festivals and also out-Noeling "our kid" in his own game.
The album ends with the McCartney-ish-in-a-Crowded-House-way song Home, taking you back 'ome, out of the trippy "circular haze", which is sure to leave your mind blurred for a long while.

Customer Reviews:
Remember when the Replacements were a fun rocking band?.......2006-03-22
Chris Mars 75% Less Fat is a melodic slab of pure guitar bass and drums rock and roll without any pretentions towards "art" or grand statements whose sole purpose is to get you up off your ass and bopping around the room. Paul Westerberg could take a huge lesson from his ex-drummer on how to let yourself go and rock without crying in your beer about it. This isn't serious, Chris channels the original happy go lucky soul of his former band the Replacements and creates a suprisingly good CD of hummable, head bopping tunes.

Customer Reviews:
Mars is the better solo artist.......2006-03-29
With all due respect to Paul Westerberg's angry review below, the initial review that praised this CD is correct. This is a fun and unique recording. Compared to Paul's boring piano recitals that he calls albums, it sounds like Pink Floyd at their height. And in reference to the idiot that blasts Mars. Bob Stinson and Chris Mars had tremendous influence on the early Mats. The last two crappy albums were Paul's babies.
Mars' talent
< talent in Westerberg's fingernail.......2006-03-29
Where to begin with the douchebag review below. First, the "pop-star wannabe lead singer" was also the songwriter and reason the Replacements existed, moron. The Replacements weren't a great band because of their friggin' drummer. Paul Westerberg's last few solo albums have been rough home recordings in his basement, hardly a "pop-star wannabe" approach; they're uneven albums, but they've got a few gems. This Chris Mars album is painful, and he can't sing to save his life. I'm not sure what's "refreshing" about his story and I'm pretty sure Joe "Sick Boy" doesn't know, either.
Are you listening, Paul?.......2005-03-09
Chris Mars is one of the most refreshing stories in music history. A key, but unheralded member of a great band, who was kicked out of the band for basically telling the pop-star wannabe lead singer that he was wrecking the band. The band of course fell apart soon after. Chris did not resent the fact that the wannabe pop star got the attention, he just wanted to rock and be unique. Well, that former wannabe pop-star is buisy making horrible albums and cashing in on his past fame, while Chris is living somewhat in obscurity. But hey, I don't care, because this album is innovative and entertaining! So, Paul, you keep making your bad albums, and Mats fans will keep buying them, hoping you have returned to your roots. But I will keep collecting these Chris Mars albums, because they are pure.

Gill, produced by Randy Wooten and Kirt Eftekhar, featuring original score by James Michael Dooley. THE MARS UNDERGROUND: PIONEERS FOR A NEW WORLD is a landmark documentary that brings to life, through the use of state-of-the-art 3D animation, the daring first human mission to the red planet and explores the challenges of surviving on Mars. Composer James Michael Dooley has been a member of Media Ventures since 1999. He has collaborated with composer Hans Zimmer both as his Chief Technical Engineer and as a composer. He has collaborated on scores such as THE TIME MACHINE, HANNIBAL, BLACK HAWK DOWN, MATCHSTICK MEN, SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON, THE RING, TEARS OF THE SUN, THUNDERBIRDS, SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE, KING ARTHUR and MADAGASCAR and has written music for short films as well as many theatrical trailers. His music for THE MARS UNDERGROUND is a combination of lush orchestral and ambient electronic elements, perfectly exploring the relationship between Man and Mars.

The first track "Undone" is superb. The rest of the CD is not on par with it but seems to be growing on me as I keep it among my CDs on "random play." They bounce too quickly between pop and something more substantial.
