Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

    I think of this as one of the most perfect CDs in my collection. Mr. Jackson accomplished a rather impressive feat in this recording... he and his band put down nine tracks, each in a drastically different style-- and yet they all have the same spirit.

    The first track is a perfect opener... a strong, moving piece with all of the energy of the man it was dedicated to-- legendary drummer Elvin Jones. Peter Washington's driving bass line and Billy Drummond's firey intensity propel us through the whole piece. What guitarist Fareed Haque does on this tune with his guitar/sitar hybrid is truly stunning, and the ways he uses it to support Javon's solo are quite unique. Both his and Javon's solos are very powerful.

    The second track has all of the intensity of the first, but with a completely different mood. "Memoria e Fado" is one of Egberto Gismonti's most beautiful compositions, and this ensemble does it great justice. Javon casts a spell with his first three notes (which sound almost bass clarinet-like) which sets the dark tone for the entire piece. Fareed's classical chops really shine on this track.

    If space permitted I could write a love sonnet to every track on this CD. The Zappa tune has a very crisp, fresh, hip feel to it. Dr. Lonnie Smith takes one of his trademark unbelievably funky solos on that track, and it's greatly enhanced by Cyro Baptista's ecclectic accompaniment. Cassandra does her mesmerizing Mississippi blues thing on "Country Girl," backed by a very convincing Fareed Haque playing slide on what sounds like a dobro, but is really the guitar/sitar. (The sitar side of it give this a strange, floaty quality amid the down-to-earth delta blues.) There is a beautiful rendition here of Charles Mingus' seldom-played ballad "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love," and a playful adaptation of a Serge Gainsbourg tune. (Javon's ears are clearly open to any style, from any corner of the globe.) The closer is a lush, seductive version of "Recado Bossa Nova," driven by Cyro Baptista's pandeiro.

    You'll find something new every time you listen to this CD. All of the musicians on it are expressing themselves at the highest level, and doing so TOGETHER. This album is not about flash or chops, it's about beautiful music, and you hear that on every tune.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance and recording, and diverse, too.......2001-05-28

    At the time I'm writing this, this CD is out of print, and that's a shame. I bought my copy here at Amazon because I read a review that said that they were surprised to find how much Javon and the band had found room to stretch out in Frank Zappa's "Zoot Allures." Frank Zappa's "Zoot Allures!" (mispelled "Foot Allures" here on Amazon at the time of this writing). My understanding was that "Zoot Allures" was a song that the publishers weren't going to allow to be covered. Perhaps that is only the case with guitar artists? Whatever the reason, I am very thankful that they let him do a version on this album, because it is fantastic. They change the head a little bit, and then they certainly do stretch out, culminating in a long, almost Hot Rats-sounding jam. What a great version of this song, sounding at once personal and unique to Javon Jackson yet really evoking and enhancing my feelings toward this, one of the most treasured Zappa songs.

    What a delight to discover that the REST of this CD was great! Before I purchased this, Javon Jackson was unknown to me and after hearing this disc I've bought several more and long to see him in concert. The rest of the CD has a mix of styles, mostly by other composers with a few originals by Javon Jackson. My favorite of the originals is the opening track, "Assesment (For Elvin Jones), where the melody is doubled by Javon and Fareed Haque (!). Indeed, if you haven't heard Fareed Haque, it is likely that you will seek out his work after hearing the great performances and textures he accomplishes on this album. There's also a smoky performance by Cassandra Wilson on the Muddy Waters track "Country Girl." Don't miss the great version of "Leap Frog" or the (to me) mildly hilarious, can't-resist-dancing "Recado Bossa Nova"

    Quick note about production: this CD sounds GREAT on every sound system I've played it on, and was especially rewarding on a very fine hi-fi at a friend's house. The liner notes say the whole disc was recorded direct to an antique tube tape machine, and the warmth-without-wooliness and clarity of the recording is a complete joy to listen to.

    Try to find a copy of this CD...you will love it!

        After the rush of new consciousness in the 60's, by the 70's women had had enough. In this decade, women's anger and cynicism was high. Now she was learning to get along without men. By this time, she was ready to show her own strength, which was initially power born of anger and demand for respect. Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" still showed the pushing back. But she was more on her own now, economically, and Donna Summer reminded us that she does, indeed, work hard for the money and should be respected. With the arrival of the 80's, though, cynicism from both Janis Ian and Tina Turner sold lots of records. Inner strength finally appeared in the nineties. Though backlash tunes rose ("Genie In A Bottle" and "I Love You Always Forever") music of this inner strength soared. Oprah became the highest paid entertainer in 1993 at $49 million per year, the very same year Mariah Carey's #1 song crooned advice to find the hero within. Shania Twain gave a new twist, born of inner security, about gender and relationship expectations in "Any Man Of Mine." At the end of the decade, Jo Dee Messina wanted a man who would stand beside her, not in front. It was time, at last, that women could stand on their own, without leaning on a man or pushing back against him. Perhaps, not coincidentally, it was the first time that women's popular music outsold that of male singers. The new era had arrived.
