Product Description
This double CD brings together many of the works that established the reputation of the composer and keyboardist known as Vangelis. These selections are drawn from the 1970's, when after stints with a number of bands, Vangelis began to focus exclusively on his solo career. It is these recordings that brought the composer to the attention of big audiences and pre-dated his success in the 1980's and 1990's. 15 tracks. 2001.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.... a return to a beautiful television experience........2007-07-30

This music brings back the spirit, intent and content, so well realized in the PBS series, that it has the effect on one of inducing an almost meditative state. One once again is traveling through space surrounded by the various types of "stars" and planets.
You once again stand on the "Sea Called Solaris" and find the mystic link that we share with all the Universe. Dr. Sagan once said, "We are all star stuff harvesting star light." There is nothing "out there" that is not here within and about us. It is a universal, mystical journey magically caught in this wonderful cd!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best C.D. since "and the stars go with you".......2006-06-21

This is my first review I have ever written but after listening to Blue Cosmos for the first time yesterday I was totally amazed. I bought "And the stars go with you" in the early ninties and I have been looking for another C.D., a part 2 so to speak all this time and I have finally found it with Blue Cosmos. Meg Bowles is brilliant and I highly recommend this C.D. for any lover of Ambient/Space music. I bought this C.D. without listening to the sample tracks just on a whim and I must say it was the best investment in music I have made in years. I am a loyal fan of Jonn Serrie but if Meg Bowles keeps this format we just might see that Jonn no longers rules the Space music genre. This C.D. is a must

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Voyage.......2000-08-31

I only got introduced to Meg Bowles when I heard her latest release, "From the Dark Earth." That CD was great because of the deep, dark spaces conversation between the synthsizer and the horn. After hearing that CD, I went looking for other releases and found this one, her second on Kumatone. This one is different, and not as brroding. The music still takes the listener to the darker corners of the universre, but hey, there is nothing depressing about going there with Ms. Bowles! It is more like taking a journey of the heart and mind to those soft dark corners under the comforter, where you can just happen to see the universe in your hands.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous ambient/space composition.......1999-06-12

ABSOLUTE must-have for Echoes/Hearts of Space fans. Bowles, doing a super job of synthesizer work, gives us the "dark side" of this genre (with Jonn Serrie's Chronicles works being the complement). Probably my favorite CD as of this writing.

    Album Description

Serene waves of crystal bowl tones echo the beautiful musical harmonies of the constellations that Pythagoras called the 'Music of the Spheres'. CHORDS OF THE COSMOS fine tunes our entire body to the musical order of the universe with a deeply healing sound journey around the zodiac wheel. This first-of-its-kind recording provides a new level of therapeutic sound with harmonic chords for each astrological sign. It facilitates the alignment and balancing of the chakras and the auric field. The perfect healing companion for meditation, joy, massage and all healing arts.

"Deborah Van Dyke is a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul. Chords of the Cosmos is a set of 12 deep overtone compositions tuned to the signs of the zodiac and Pythagorean progression. Each piece is designed for Chakra meditation to balance a specific body part. Meditation with this CD aligns listeners with the resonance of the cosmos.

This disc is pure overtone bliss. Deborah's techniques on the bowls are flawless. There is no need for looping, layering and/or processing. The bowls' natural overtone properties simulate those effects and stimulate introspection, relaxation and healing. Deep listening is a wonderful experience. It allows listeners to go to their "happy places" for ultimate relaxation.

This is a special CD from a special lady. It is the overtone CD among overtone CDs." Jim Brenholts, Music Reviewer

4 out of 5 stars I liked it, but this is not for everyone!.......2004-12-30

I have done exercises of toning in the past with Quigong, and this was very similar for me. I found the tones beautiful and melodic, and simply that, sustained and harmonized tones. If that is what you are looking for, then yes, you may indeed enjoy this. While I don't know whether the cords used are balancing for the zodiac or of the areas mentioned, I do know that I liked the meditative properties of the drawn out harmonies for myself.

This album though, is not for everyone. The pieces here might be compared to the musical sounds made by a harmony of fine crystal glassware at dinner. For some people this style of sounding may be annoying at best, and unpleasant at worst. If you are looking for clear crystal harmonics, you may very well enjoy this CD. If, however you are looking for soothing, musical composition I suggest checking out some Dean Evenson and passing on the Crystal Bowls.

My advice: always listen to a few of the provided samples first. That is what they're there for!

    5 out of 5 stars each tract a meditation.......2004-08-16

I think that Chords of the Cosmos is a wonderful resource for anyone seeking sustained meditative work. I also study astrology and enjoy selecting sequences of the different tracts to 'tune in' to the various notes revealed for each sign or season, what a great way to open one's consciousness to the subtle music of creation! And because a whole tract is dedicated to each zodiacal sign, one can create meditative 'sessions', such as for the four elements, the three qualities, or any array thereof.

Another example would be to arrange or program the tracts into the Chaldean order of planets (based on the signs that each planet occupies within one's own horoscope) to feel the flow of harmony or changes from the Sun to Mercury and Venus to Earth (the sign opposing the 'Sun Sign'), followed by a rendezvous in the sign of the Moon... then meditatively guide one's consciousness outward through Mars to Jupiter and Saturn using the harmonies of these signs of the Zodiac. As the Sun is the "heart" of our solar system model, this meditation could be considered a "heart-centered" approach for guiding the flow of consciousness from the source of light and warmth and then outward through each planet... and back again!.

The chord arrangements for each sign are beautiful, each tract is a meditation in itself!
I've read how Pythagorus studied number and notes with his monochord, how Einstein would play his violin for inspiration while solving his equations. _Chords of the Cosmos_ makes it possible to engage in similar meditative journeys, the possibilities are endless. With this gift one can literally craft their own meditative vehicle through the beautiful vibrancy of the crystal bowls, played in layers of harmony to resonate with the seasons of time.

5 out of 5 stars EXPLORING INNER SPACE.......2004-08-06

Pythagoras, Rudolph Steiner and other leaders in the field of consciousness have all talked of the connectivity between outer space and inner space, the macrocosm/the microcosm. Chords of the Cosmos is unique in its use of musical triad chords created with crystal bowl tones, that mirror the tones of the constellations.

Make no mistake, this is a seriously therapeutic CD, not intended for mere listening pleasure, although the serene, perfectly tuned chords are beautiful indeed to hear. But there is much more to this CD, that, to the uninitiated ear, may not be appreciated on first listen. Anyone interested in deepening their meditative experience will find immense value in using this CD to fine-tune their body instrument. And the more one works with it, the further one goes. Within the first five minutes I slip into alpha state and thereafter, far beyond.......

Chords of the Cosmos creates a bridge of tonal sounds that enable you to experience the subtle fields of energy of the constellations, while simultaneously accessing the deeper fields within your inner space. A remarkable tool for higher consciousness and healing!

1 out of 5 stars Should have listened for myself before purchasing.......2004-05-18

Should have listened for myself before purchasing the special price package. Traveling The Sacred Sound Current is pleasant and Chords of the Cosmos drives me and others who heard it... nuts.

    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL CD.......2004-01-02

I do listen to this recording at least once a day - sometimes with headphones, sometimes I just let it play in the background. When I listen to it with headphones, I feel the sounds reverberating first in my head and then spreading throughout the rest of my body, re-arranging, harmonizing and aligning my energy field and by body from the top of my head, all the way to the tips of my toes. Then, I feel ready to embrace the day, balanced, nourished, strengthened.

The very first lines of Chris Bell's one and only album say it all: "Every night I tell myself I am the cosmos / I am the wind / That don't bring you back again." Recorded between his departure from the notoriously misbegotten power-pop group Big Star in 1972 and his 1978 death following an auto accident, Cosmos is the work of a man struggling to assuage his depression with spiritual succor. Musically, this collection (which was unheard by the general public prior to 1992) is reminiscent of John Lennon's '70s work. With the exception of Plastic Ono Band, however, Lennon never put out a solo album on a par with this one. The tragedy is that Bell never had a chance to try to match it. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Lennonesque to be sure.......2007-06-21

What I really want to say is that while I have always felt that Big Star is one of the most overrated "unknown" bands in the history of pop music, I really like this album. So go figure. Everyone's been saying "if you like Big Star" etc, and yet I can't stand that band but this solo lp transcends anything I've heard from BS.

3 out of 5 stars On an island.......2007-02-17

As great as Big Star was, it's sad that neither songwriter was able to put together a decent solo career. Chris Bell drifted off and was never able to get a record deal (except for one single), while Alex Chilton seemed to take perverse pride in making sloppy, uninspired music. This CD represents the entirety of Chris Bell's solo work and was released 14 years after his death. It doesn't quite work as an album. For the most part, the recording quality is somewhere between a demo and a real album, and there is no real progression to the song sequence. It's just a bunch of Chris Bell songs--some fast ones and some slow ones.

There are some very good tunes here, and if you are a serious Big Star fan you will want to own this CD. And Ryko, as usual, has done a fantastic job with the packaging, which includes several photos of Chris Bell and a long, heartfelt essay by his brother David, summarizing Chris's musical career. The best songs are "I Am the Cosmos" and "You and Your Sister," which made up the single that was released during Chris's lifetime. Another highlight is the dreamy "Speed of Sound." The acoustic guitar playing on the slow songs is gorgeous throughout.

The fast songs, like "Get Away," "Make a Scene," and "Fight at the Table," sound a bit forced. Bell contributed some great rockers to the first Big Star album, but without a real band to back him up, he sounds a little out of his element on the fast songs here. His singing is not quite strong enough, maybe because the lyrics are a little too complicated to work in a loud, uptempo setting.

The slow songs, on the other hand, are almost TOO personal. A couple of them mention Jesus or Him with a capital H. Musically, they are very good, although the Beatles influence can be a bit too heavy, especially on "There Was A Light," which sounds like a slowed-down "Let It Be."

Ultimately, the title, "I Am the Cosmos," is very fitting, and almost unifies the collection all by itself. Chris Bell sounds like he's on an island here (or alone on a mountain top, as in the cover photo), but this is more tragic than enlightening. In songs like "Better Save Yourself" and "There Was A Light," he sounds like a man who is fighting his demons--and losing. The effort is noble, and there are some memorable melodies to be heard here, but it's an uncomfortable album to listen to. I admire it a lot more than I enjoy it, and it seems that I can only listen to it every two or three years.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, too bad this is all.......2006-06-25

What a pity Chris Bell fatally piled up his car in 1978 after giving up on a music industry that did its level best to finish him first because this is all we'll ever get to hear from him. This music is great and it shows Bell maturing as a writer out of Big Star. (I love Big Star, but this music improves on a lot of what Chris was doing there.)

The playing is stripped down vintage, not at all dissimilar from the Big Star stuff with loud, crunchy/clean Strats through British valve amps, ringing acoustic six and twelve strings, drums, basses, some boogie piano, a touch of Moog, and lots and lots of harmony vocals. Arrangement is often quite cool, too, with instruments often adding by their restraint or even absence. The production is similarly vintage with a nice tube-and-tape warmth you really don't hear much of anymore. (If you're looking for crystal clear recording on a '70s low budget recording, look elsewhere.) Alex Chilton's guest vocs on You and Your Sister really work well. Bell's not got Chilton's choir boy voice but has a raw aggression that Chilton frequently lacked (e.g., on Fight at the Table) and can keep a good tune for a ballad when he needs to (Though I Know She Lies). He's no slouch as a guitarist, too, playing better than he did on #1 Record. The comparison of Bell as Lennon to Chilton's McCartney isn't half bad, though for both their writing was rather more Lennon than the sweetness of McCartney.

In all, what a loss but at least we've got these songs.

    5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A CLASSIC.......2006-06-08

bOTTOM lINE THIS IS ONE OF THOSE cdS YOU NEED TO HAVE i used to have the album and played it at Al and Julie's house...so if you are thinking about buying this CD as the saying goies "just do it !"

5 out of 5 stars If you like Big Star, you'll like this.......2006-02-27

Many of the songs on this record will remind you of Big Star. But, you can tell from listening to Bell's style that he was every bit as important a member of the band as Alex Chilton. Chilton is often seen as the spotlight, but Bell's songs shone just as brightly. Here on this album, there are no Big Star songs, just Chris Bell solo. And we lost a great one when we lost him.

When I was a teenager (in the early '90s), I first heard the album "Blood" from This Mortal Coil. On it, they cover "You and Your Sister" from this album. I saw that it was written by Chris Bell, but I had yet to learn about Big Star. Eventually my fanaticism with Paul Westerberg led me to Alex Chilton and company. I listed to that song over and over again.

Now with this Chris Bell release, I can listen to three different versions of it! And each one is worthwhile. No overkill, no filler, this is a solid record.

    5 out of 5 stars Pre-Digital Electronic Music.......2006-08-24

I have the original lp of this album(it came in clear vinyl) which was recorded in SQ quadrophonic sound! The early U.S. release on CD doesn't even come close. I only wish it could be remastered using SACD or Dolby Surround like some of todays CD's or even DVD Audio. But, even on CD this is one of the best early electronic music masterpeices!

5 out of 5 stars A very sophisticated recording of electronic music.......2006-06-20

This 1975 album is, in my estimation, nearly singular in the world of electronic music due to its sheer complexity. In fact, this album by American electronic composer Larry Fast is much closer to progressive rock than Berlin School electronica for example - there is just a lot going on in each of these compositions.

The six tracks on the album range in length from 2'58" to 12'50" and feature a range of tones and dynamic contrasts. Another interesting aspect of the music, and I never expected to discuss this in a review of an electronic composition, is the abundant use of melodies, harmonies, and most importantly both rhythmic and melodic counterpoint. In fact, it is amazing what Larry achieved with just the use of a mini-moog, an Oberheim Polyphonic, and a Mellotron 400. In fact, it makes me wonder what it would have sounded like if he had scored these complicated synthesizer pieces for rock instruments, including a full drum kit.

Interestingly, Larry's link with prog rock is not as tenuous as one might think with his being an electronic composer and he struck up a good working relationship with the prog band Nektar around this time. His excellent work can be heard on Nektar's Recycled album (1975).

This remastered album features restored cover art and excellent sound quality, along with some skimpy liner notes.

This album is very highly recommended to those electronica fans who want something a little more varied than the typical fare. Also recommended are two albums by Isao Tomita including Snowflakes are Dancing (1974) and The Tomita Planets (1976).

    Album Description

"Analog synthesizer-based horror soundscapes...uneasy listening for the intelligent headbanger" - PULP

Pittsburgh, PA's ZOMBI create boundless, leering soundscapes inspired by filmmakers such as Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci and the musical scores of John Carpenter and GOBLIN. The duo weave an ever-changing series of rich, decaying analog synth waves through an organic, driving bass and drum foundation, creating chilling moods and atmospheres. ZOMBI's Relapse Records / Release Entertainment debut Cosmos is a powerful work of eerie, relentless rhythms and futuristic score that shares as much headspace with the late-night sci-fi explorer as the space rock adventurer.

5 out of 5 stars This is what I call Goblin fan art.......2005-09-04

NICE. I found out about these guys while searching for the Goblin Zombi soundtrack because I like the whole gloomy synth sound and then I found out there was a band DEDICATED to creating music inpired by this unique 'Goblin formula'...Let me just say I can't wait for there next release! Very chill music that ironically puts you on the edge...Also ironic; they're signed to Relapse Records!?

5 out of 5 stars Cosmos: A review by Craig from Vital Weekly........2005-08-16

    ZOMBI-Cosmos (CD By Relapse Entertainment)
Zombi are a duo that is inspired by horror movie scores from the eighties--I've got to say though you couldn't tell from this album. It is an instrumental journey through the voids of space, hence the name of the album: Cosmos. The album features seven tracks of spacey, synth-based compositions produced with vintage synthesizers, drums and electric bass. Clearly with this album, Zombi gives the listener the feeling of a weightless adventure through uncharted space, perfectly putting to score our sense of awe at the silent, yet majestic wonders one may see when free of the atmospheric confines of our terra firma. Do yourself a favor and seek it out; you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars How Bout A Little Music? Might Cover The Noise We Make.......2005-07-20

Zombi's Cosmos is very welcome on the cd rack. It's great to see someone doing this style of music, which really isn't all that popular. I mean, it really doesn't fit into any popular genre. It's not metal, not industrial, and I can't see it being played at a rave, yet it's pretty much all synth. The comparisons to Goblin are very accurate. There's also some John Carpenter thrown in there, especially when you hit track 4. That's not saying they're a total Goblin clone, but even if they were, would that be so bad? There aren't many bands around doing this type of stuff, ya know, and Goblin have pretty much hung it up. Zombi, like Pink Floyd, can be very energetic or suprisingly soothing depending on your mood at the time. It's a very fuzzy, dancey, trancey, take off your pants-y kind of sound. Indeed it conjures up images of Romeroland. Upon listening to this cd my wife even said, "This sounds like it belongs in one of your zombie movies". So, there you have it. Do you like Goblin? You like zombie films and/or Italian horror cinema? Well, a new Goblin album seems unlikely, but at least we have folks like Zombi to carry that torch. Don't be a schmuck, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD NOW!!!!!!! ZOMBI RULES!.......2005-05-31

i first heard of these guys 'cause they toured with my friends band (Dura Mater) and so i went to check them out. i knew they were influenced by Goblin, and that's about it. well, let me say these two blew me away. i expected an entertaining gig, but little did i know that within minutes of their opening song, my heart would be in my gut...you know when you see a live act, and in that moment you get chills and butterflies and all that? well yeah, they kick a$$!! i bought the cd right away and listen to it on a regular basis. don't think twice, if you like italian horror, goblin, morricone, fabio frizzi etc. GET THIS ALBUM!!! you won't be let down! i was even fortunate enoughto chill with these guys and play nintendo, they're great guys doing great work that most people don't have the balls to approach....

    5 out of 5 stars Zombi - "Cosmos".......2004-08-09

Have you ever wondered what would happen if two musicians that were inspired by big names in the horror industry such as Argento, Fulci and Carpenter would sound like if they made some music? Well my friends let me introduce you to the result of such an interesting query - I present you with ZOMBI!

ZOMBIE is a new team of musicians who are going to rock the socks off of the music/film industry. Steve Moore and A.E Paterra, hail from Pittsburgh, PA - home to George Romero's Dead movies and the birthplace of brain eating, slow moving zombies. Being inspired by the late 70's early 80's horror greats, these two gents have the horror bug so bad, it is only fitting that they name their group "Zombi".

Zombi's current Debut, Cosmos, will be available for purchase in the US Aug 3 and in Europe Aug 23. Might I say, you HAVE to grab a copy! These boys aren't playing around! They have put 210% into this release, and it shows! Teetering on the line of horror/sci-fi sound, this is the ear candy that I have been searching out for oh so long. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd's pre - Dark Side Of The Moon or original 70's prog rock this CD is going to bring life to your blackened heart, and bring back colorful flashbacks only you can appreciate. Zombi takes you on a roller coaster ride that will bring your emotions in check and leave you wondering if you are being abducted by aliens, watching a horrifying sacrifice, or walking aimlessly with a heard of Zombies.

This is seamless, crisp, clean cutting synth and percussion sound that the music world has been void of for some time now. There are no lyrics to deter from your listening enjoyment, no samples repeating themselves; just good pure musicians busting their ass to give you their soul and allowing you to make the story up as you go along.

This Debut CD gets 5 stars from me! No one else would have been able to pull off this resurgence of 70's style prog rock and turn it into a beautiful piece of musical ear candy as Zombi has. You don't need brains to agree with me on this one. Go NOW and pre-order a copy for yourself and a friend. The price is right, and it will be the best damn money you have spent on a CD in a long while!

    Side note:
This love for horror that they have running through their veins has come full circle - Zombi has scored the feature length horror film "Home Sick" staring our buddy Bill Mosley as well as a few other notables. The soundtrack for this flick should be out following the release of this flick in fall of 2004 - so keep your eyes peeled!

If you know Deerhoof, your expectations will be way off the mark. If you don't, don't have any expectations. This is a band that can best be described as a washing-machine full of songs veering between spin cycle and a steady wash. And over fifteen minutes and seven tracks that comprise the Green Cosmos EP, expect this variation to happen many, many times.

For the first ten seconds of "Come See the Duck," the blasting riff and heavy drums will catch your ear, before grabbing the rest of your head and pulling it about quite violently. Lurching from garage-rock to thrash and back again, by the time you drag yourself to sanity and think "what was THAT?!" the song's moved onto "Green Cosmos," which is far more coherent, with a regular beat, chiming, bleeping keyboards and Japanese lyrics. The pattern of surprise and exploration repeats itself in many guises (the pastoral/ dramatic schizophrenia of "Malalauma," the toytown jazz-reggae of the wonderfully titled "Hot Mint Air Balloon"), worming its way into the listener's brain with its own charm. By the time it's done, you should be well and truly under Deerhoof's spell. --Thom Allott

This is sort of a sampler of music, both from different genres, and from the PBS series Cosmos, hosted by Carl Sagan. The music is a great variety of styles and instrumentation. Even if you've never *seen* Cosmos, this is a great album to get.
