Loreena McKennitt's "songs for the season" are haunting for their beauty and her fascinating voice. Blending traditional Irish music with worldbeat and New Age-like instrumentation, McKennitt's arrangements are at once elegant and eloquent, enchanting and familiar, whether she's singing "Coventry Carol," "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," or "Good King Wenceslas." "Snow," adapted from a 19th-century poem, and the traditional "Seeds of Love" are so lofty and deep they reach almost mystical places. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
ok, THIS is Loreena McKennitt's CHRISTMAS Album.......2007-06-16
Everyone considers Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" her Christmas album. I ask people not to call it that, it is more than that, it is music for the whole season from leaf-fall to buds and sprouts in the spring.
This, then, is her Christmas album. Although short, at only five songs, it is a well thought-out album, and a definite "Must-Have" and a "Keeper". The songs here are wonderful, not your standard fare for Christmas, so it is a fresh experience, something always welcome with music for this time of the year, don't you think? Her accompanyment, here, is harp only, so everything is light and open, just right, and soothing after all the crash and bang regular Christmas music......I mean, how many times can one listen to Silver Bells, Jingle Bells, and Here Comes Santa Claus before you just wanna scream "STOP!", huh?
Pick this album up, take it home, and slip in between some other Christmas albums, and be prepared to go "WOW!....That's Nice!", and to also find a new favorite Christmas album. ~operabruin
Great Artist!.......2007-05-14
This is an awesome holiday / winter / Christmas CD. It is short (only 5 songs) but it is full of voice and enough to set the mood perfectly. Not traditional versions of the songs, but none the less beautiful.
wonderful.......2007-01-20
This is THE Christmas album to have.Loreena McKennitt's hauntingly beautiful voice and the wonderful arrangements of traditional Christmas songs has made this our most listened to Christmas album in the last few years.I like to play this album any time of the year as it is very peaceful and relaxing to hear.
a winter garden.......2007-01-11
I love Loreena McKennitts' music. this CD is very melodic in a Celtic way. the music on this CD is also very mellow listening. I love the rhythms of the instruments used.
beautiful!.......2006-12-31
The only reason I gave this item "4 stars" is because it only has the 5 songs on it - I wish it had more. However, it's still worth buying. The songs are hauntingly beautiful, in McKennitt's signature style. If you enjoy her music, this album won't disappoint. I recommend it! :-)

Bach- No Humbug!.......2000-11-30
I really didn't know what kind of quality to expect from this CD. I bought it based strictly on the quality of other American Gramaphone music (Mannheim Steamroller to be specific). I was not disappointed in any way! If you're not sure what Bach to get, hesitate no more, this is a wonderful project.
A must get Bach CD.......2000-02-14
There are so many popular works written by Bach, that they could make a multi-disc set (Toccata and Fugue in D minor, "Air On The G String", "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring", Brandenburg Concertos, Orchestral Suites, etc., etc., etc.). There are many individual CDs that have their own collection of Bach's works. Some CDs are budget, some mid-priced, and some full-priced. If you are getting started on Bach (and, quite possibly, other kinds of classical music), you might wonder where to start.
Well, as for a full-priced Bach album, this American Gramaphone CD would be a great place to start. It's one fine collection of only some of his finest works on one CD. John Rutter and the City of London Sinfonia did a fine job of performing these works. The performances are brisk, which is pretty much how these works must've been performed during the Baroque period. By the sound of the orchestra, it must've contained modern instruments (which I mostly perfer over authentic). Although I was kind of dissappointed that the "Air from Suite #3 (a.k.a. 'Air On G String')" was a little too rushed. That's the only complaint I have about this CD. But that would NOT be enough to take a star away from the rating.
I would recomend this album to whoever's into classical music, as well as those who are just getting started (AND wouldn't mind investing in a full-priced CD).

Album Description
Music to Relax is designed to create space to calm the mind and unwind the body. Simplified harmonies, the mid-range sounds of the viola, alto flute, cello, and piano, and elegant compositions make this an exceptionally peaceful and fulfilling listening experience. Improvised classical music is quite rare. However, in the hands of sensitive and skilled craftsmen, we now have the opportunity to experience what was commonly done in the time of the original composers. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and their contemporaries were highly respected for improvisational skills and adaptations of other composer's music.

Great alternative--.......2007-06-07
We first heard selections from this CD on Internet Radio one evening at home. My wife enjoyed them so much she began requesting to hear them every night before bedtime. We both find the CD very relaxing and calming, just the thing after we've had a long day at work. Don't look for technical perfection here, that's not what this is about. It's about enjoyment of the music for the pure music's sake. Kids can "tolerate the grown-up music" and begin their appreciation of the classics in a very unobtrusive way. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a wonderful alternative to the fully orchestrated versions of these pieces.
Music to Relax...JUST LISTEN!.......2002-02-28
I have found Music to Relax to be so enjoyable. It creates such a comfortable mood in my home. Our family is large, and to have this beautiful music playing in the background is so peaceful for all of us. It's also great to listen to while you read or just need to Relax! It really works!

Lullay, lullay.......2006-11-15
Finally -- a Christmas album that doesn't include "Jingle Bells," "Joy to the World" or "Let It Snow." I'm so bloody sick of those songs. Instead, Loreena McKennitt looks back on an almost-forgotten time when Christmas was a sacred day full of beauty and magic, in the all-too-brief but very lovely EP "A Winter Garden."
It opens with the soothing, lullaby-like "Coventry Carol," before heading to the majestic catchiness of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and utterly enchanting "Good King Wenceslas," where a saintly king and his servant travel on foot to bring food and firewood to a poor woodsman's family. It's a beautiful little song, and the sprightly tune makes it even more so.
A smoother, softer tone comes in with "Snow," the musical adaptation of a poem by nineteenth-century Canadian poet Archibald Lampman. It's a frosty, beautiful portrait of a winter evening, without any direct reference to Christmas, but its formal tone fits in. The EP rounds off with the traditional "Seeds of Love," a sweet little love song.
Christmas is one of those holidays swamped by commercial profit and not by the traditions and beliefs behind it. So it's refreshing to hear songs that don't bring to mind mall muzak -- instead, McKennitt's EP make you think of wassail, medieval castles, cathedrals draped in holly, and blankets of snow over dark forests.
"A Winter Garden" was recorded over a few days in the summer of 1995, in Wiltshire's recording studios. It sounds pretty laid-back, and the relaxed tone of the results shows it. Her selection of songs is excellent -- four are traditional ballads, rich and underused by most singers. I'm not quite sure why she included "Seeds of Love," which while a lovely song, has no reference to Christmas or wintertime.
McKennitt not only provides her rich vocals, but also plays the harp and adds some keyboard flourishes. Backing her is Rich Lazar's medieval-sounding percussion, Hugh Marsh's violin and Caroline Lavelle's cello -- among others. There are also acoustic guitars, bass, viola, and pipes, which all are woven into a sort of medieval-pop.
While a full-length Christmas album can be found in "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," the "Winter Garden" EP is an enchanting, atmospheric listen that gives a whole new look at Christmas carols.

Album Description
'O Come Emmanuel' includes many of your traditional Christmas favorites in new and interesting arrangements. Through his music, David captures both the emotion and magnitude of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. From the haunting 'Silent Night' to David's rousing rendition of 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,' you'll find this Christmas album a unique and enjoyable addition to your collection.
A Comment from the Artist...
"With 'O Come Emmanuel,' I've done my best to create a Christmas album a bit different than anything you've heard before. I realize there are a million Christmas CDs out there. That's one of the reasons I resisted the idea of doing a Christmas album for so long. I mean, do we really need another solo piano Christmas CD?
But one of my friends challenged me on this idea. 'Consider it an opportunity, David. Rather than thinking of it as 'just another Christmas album', think of it as music written to express the emotion of the Christmas story. Take these songs people have loved for years and wrap them around your piano style. People love your piano music, and they love Christmas music. So, put the two together. Just create a Christmas album you yourself would like.'
These words gnawed at me, and I began thinking about how I could use my music to tell the story of the birth of Jesus. And so, I started working on it, playing around with some of the popular (and more traditional) Christmas melodies and began adapting them into my personal style. Now I'm ready to pass the CD on to you. It's most definitely not your 'typical' Christmas album, but for that very reason I think you'll find it refreshing. Of all my CDs, I can easily say that 'O Come Emmanuel' is the album that I'm most proud of."
Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-06-17
Being a piano teacher who starts students on Christmas music in early-November in preparation for the winter recital, I'm not always very receptive to reviewing Christmas albums much past Thanksgiving, but David Nevue's "O Come Emmanuel" is truly exceptional. David's retelling of the Christmas story with his solo piano arrangements and interpretations is deeply personal as well as spiritual and inspirational. The fourteen selections include two originals, and all are of a religious nature. David Nevue has a wonderful way of taking a simple melody line and making it full of meaning. His elegant playing style is never overly showy, preferring a direct and honest approach, which takes a lot more skill and heart than pure showmanship takes. Nevue set out to create a Christmas album that was truly something different, and succeeded well.
The CD opens and closes with hauntingly beautiful arrangements of the title song, rich in its dark minor key moodiness. "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is one of the oldest Christmas carols still sung today, but in capable hands such as Nevue's the song is both ancient and contemporary, full of deep emotion that is ageless. "Away in A Manger" is a song that is often the first Christmas song learned in Sunday School, and Nevue introduces his lovely version with a one-hand melody line, emphasizing the children's view of this sweet song. He then brings in some of the other melodies (there are at least 40 melodies that go with this song!) that are often used, making each verse a little different. "Watching Their Flocks" is one of the two original pieces, and is quietly introspective, possibly suggesting the peaceful solitude of shepherds tending to their flocks late into the night - very beautiful. "Joy to the World" opens with a long, improvisational intro and then comes into the song itself at the chorus - a very interesting and effective approach. "Silent Night" is pure peacefulness. "Coventry Carol" is one of my favorites. Nevue again opens the piece with a long prelude that is mysterious and dark, and his interpretation of the piece itself is emotionally charged - a wonderful arrangement. "The Gift" is the second original piece, and it is also a real beauty in its simple honesty and gentle message. "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" is the most upbeat piece in the collection, with a jazzy treatment - starting out slowly with a rubato rhythm, and evolving into several variations. Great stuff! "O Come Emmanuel" is one of my favorite Christmas albums now, and I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2003-12-24
I am a musician and just want to say this is a wonderful recording of Christmas classics, talent and production are fantastic. This is a must have for your collection!
Holiday Tranquility.......2003-12-05
As a Holistic Health Practitioner, I am very familiar with music therapy. James Anthony Walker's 'Music for a Candlelight Christmas' is medicine for the soul. The sound is not only warmly delicate, but ethereal in nature - making it soothing in a 'welcome home' sort of way.
I highly recommend adding this magical CD to your holiday collection. It's music that you can truly listen to with your heart.
O what a merry Christmas this is.......2003-11-27
It's a rare moment indeed when a CD of Christmas music gets my attention.
But Walker has done that, and then some. I love the ambient feel that he has so skillfully lent to so many of these Classics. It makes the songs sing in a very special way.
And Walker is a very special composer indeed. Where has he been? My thanks to him for sharing this wonderful music. This is ear candy for a very bright time of year - but it is not enough! I want more from what this musician perceives as a talent that many many more people need to hear.
Thanks.
Harmonious and Soothing.......2003-11-21
The creative genious of James Anthony Walker allows you to close your eyes and experience the gentle, almost hypnotic sounds of Christmas. His music is soothing; the delicate dulcimer, the tranquil strings, allowing you to relax and contemplate the true meaning of Christmas - Peace - Love - Tranquility.
I look forward to new introductions from this truley talented composer.
A Perfect Start to the Holiday Season.......2003-11-21
Christmas recordings like this one are a rare breed. We have all heard the various carols and know them well. We encounter them year after year sung and played in every imaginable way. Their familiarity is what is so comforting, allowing us to invoke the flavor of the season in a way no mere garland can muster. James Anthony Walker has taken us a step further in his wonderful arrangements of the standard holiday fare. The music is both social and intimate providing a host of possibilities for display. You will definitely feel the holiday spirit whether playing the recording as a backdrop for a festive gathering, an intimate Christmas Eve dinner or a solitary moment savoring the holiday mood. An extra bonus, though, is the unique way Walker has of approaching each carol. With the clear vision of a composer, Walker brings a fresh approach to each song. You can (and should) listen to each not only as a backdrop, but for the beautiful musicality displayed. For these, and so many other reasons, this Christmas recording should be in your collection.
