From Amazon.co.uk
Grinderman is the sound of indie rock legends growing old disgracefully, and that is by no means a criticism. From the opening rant of "Get It On," this is an album with all the menace of an angry drunk, dripping with anger and testosterone (as the surfeit of facial hair in the band's interior photo will attest). It could even be the sound of Nick Cave's midlife crisis, but it doesn't matter, because Grinderman rocks. It's the sound of four musicians having a grand time, turning the volume up to 11 and really cutting loose. For that reason, it's the more upbeat tracks here that are probably the best: "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars)" with its driving electric organ, the primal urgency of "Depth Charge Ethel," and the strutting album closer "Love Bomb." After all the po-faced seriousness he's displayed in recent years, it's good to know that Cave has rediscovered his sense of humour: "I cleaned the sheets on my bed, I combed the hairs across my head, I sucked in my gut and still she said, 'I don't want to,'" he sings on "No Pussy Blues," with his tongue firmly in cheek (amongst other places). Simply put, Grinderman is a hoot. --Ted Kord
Album Description
The story of Grinderman begins within the working processes of another band: Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. At the start of 2004, when Nick Cave took a small team of Bad Seeds members -- violinist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn Casey and drummer Jim Sclavunos -- off to the tiny Misère studio in Paris for a songwriting session, they effectively established a new band. The small combo configuration of Nick, Warren, Marty and Jim had its public debut in a showcase performance to promote the Bad Seeds Nocturama album; the foursome continued working in this streamlined format, getting together frequently for Nick Cave "solo" tours. Born of babbling lyrics hatched from Bosch eggshells in the Hyde-bound apocalyptic margins of the Cave brain, the Grinderman sound is an instinctual yawlp that also resurrects the demons of each musician's past: the trashcan proselytising of Birthday Party -era Nick; Sclavunos' late 70s New York no-wave noise wisdom; Martyn Casey's ominous Triffids bass reverb; plus Ellis' avant-garde soundtrack work and his teenage love of Black Sabbath. Destination: Out! Grinderman sound different from everyone, including themselves. As Memphis Slim put it back in 1941, "While everything is quiet and easy/ Mr. Grinder can have his way." It's a new day. God help you all.

Crazy fun!.......2007-07-31
I listened to the cd before I went to see the Grinderman show live.
The band was fantastic and this cd will remind me of the show everytime.
Nick Cave was great to see along with the other band members.
Get It On.......2007-07-22
Nick Cave is in an unfortunate position; his past accomplishments were so great that anything he does now that isn't stellar is a letdown. His work with The Birthday Party is essential, and his catalogue with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds is monumental. So what happens when Cave starts a "new" band like Grinderman? He risks disappointment.
Grinderman is not a far step from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Which, considering the personnel, is not surprising. Each member of Grinderman has also worked as a Bad Seed and some of these tracks that appear on this self-titled debut could easily be reworked for the next Bad Seeds release. "I Don't Need You (To Set Me Free)" and "Man in the Moon", for example, both unfold in a shape and style similar to past Bad Seed songs.
Still, in spite of the shared elements, Grinderman is somewhat distinct from the group's other band. It is rougher, it is more disheveled, and it is less compromising. The guitar playing, or rather, the lack of guitar playing is particularly messy. Nick Cave plays the instrument himself and he is far from a virtuoso. Every pluck reinforces this. His playing is awkward and clumsy. And yet, his crude fingers also give this band added personality.
Take "No Pussy Blues", the album's first single, for instance. It begins with a driving bassline and steady, banging beats and then erupts with a spill of loud, confrontational guitar. The gawky instrumentation works well. When Cave starts to sing, his charismatic voice carries the track even further. "No Pussy Blues" is peppered with his rugged sarcasm. Lyrically, the song deals with failed sexual advances and the resulting frustrations. "I sent her every type of flower / I played her a guitar by the hour / I patted her revolting little Chihuahua / But still she just didn't want to". Every syllable is delivered with a tongue-in-cheek dark humor and smirking wry attitude.
"No Pussy Blues" is fast. It is propelled by its quick tempo, and other tracks follow a similar path. The raw excellence of "Get It On", the driving fun of "Depth Charge Ethel", the bending wines of "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars)", and rocking simplicity of "Love Bomb" all tumble forward on a throbbing bass and smacking rhythm.
Not every track relies on speed, however. "Electric Alice", which is one of the album's highlights, squirms along Warren Ellis's distorted violin strings. Voice and organ alternate their places at the song's forefront while bass and drums circle and contain the music. The song wanders and meanders blindly through psychedelic ambience.
Grinderman revisits the gritty attitude that Cave had in the 1980s, but misses the elegance. The music of Grinderman is often muddied and at least half of their songs shimmy along a sloppy path. Like an oil stain on the floor of a dirty garage, Grinderman is thick, dark, and ugly.
An Explosion in Angst.......2007-07-10
This one's for all the angry, frustrated, aggrieved souls who, knowing slightly better than to act on impulse and commit some egregious violation of either the legal or moral sort (preferably both at once), just need a good splash of hard rock and roll for cleansing. This is my first introduction to Nick Cave, and dare I say I'm all tingly with adrenaline after listening to `Grinderman'. For me, it's a nearly perfect melding of Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, where punk meets dark, folky blues. This is a loud and commanding record. Other reviewers have used the words vitriolic, raw, primal, vicious, and seething...and rightly so. That about says it all, but the newbie like myself might get caught into thinking that this is a one-dimensional album. Not so. Looking more deeply, there is ominous substance here. It evokes the creepy feeling that this is what you'll feel when you finally surrender your youth. All that angst and fury released into a gratifying but nevertheless pointless display of over-indulgent self-expression. But what Cave and Co. do is soak it all in, bask in one's powerlessness and thereby getting all the more pissed off. The result then, is an explosion of some awfully good and therapeutic rock. My favorites are: `Get it on', `No Pussy Blues', `Go Tell..', `Honey Bee', and especially `Love Bomb'. This is Rock and Roll with no consequence. We need more of this.
A Welcome Departure.......2007-06-21
As much as I like the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, their sound was getting to be a bit repetitous at times (to me, at least). It was about time for a new direction and Grinderman delivers. A few of the songs don't wear well (eg. no pussy blues), but several are sure to become classics in the Nick Cave musical archive. I would have given this release 5 stars, but I think that there is room for improvement. By the way...great guitar work from the man himself.
An Entertaining Departure.......2007-06-14
Knowing well the music of Nick Cave, when I saw the lewdly postured monkey on the cover of Grinderman, I knew I was in for an entertaining departure from his recent musical path. I had heard all the hype that preceded its release, but when I first heard it, it sounded very different from what I was led to expect.
I agree with the reviewer who said that one must listen many times to any album by Nick Cave before making a decision on its quality. His talent is so deep, and his writing often so complex, that his work rarely reveals itself fully on first listen. Much of the music press ballyhooed Grinderman as a return to the days of the Birthday Party. The song No Pussy Blues was widely touted as one of Cave's greatest. I think the press was wrong on both counts.
First of all, while Grinderman is raw and primal, it is hardly a return to the unstructured sound of the Birthday Party. Grinderman may be rough, but it is definitely not the sound of a bunch of musicians trying to establish their niche. Its the sound of a bunch of seasoned musicians having a blast! As for No Pussy Blues, I think it is one of the weaker songs on the CD even though the title may have been a draw for some. Cave seemed to be really stretching to make the lyrics fit, but in the end it sounds so desperate and unromantic that there's no wonder that he's got the "no pussy blues".
There are some great songs here as well. I like Electric Alice; Depth Charge Ethel with its sound sometimes evocative of Deep Purple's Machine Head days; (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free; When My Love Comes Down; and what I think is the album's best song, the hard-driving Love Bomb.
Because Cave has made so many albums superior to this, I can't possibly tag Grinderman with five stars. But it still is worth owning if you are a fan of Nick Cave on any level or you just like your music raw and rowdy. I'll certainly be playing it whenever the mood so demands.

Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
While working on the two "Pirates Of The Carribean" films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. "Rogue's Gallery" offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years.
Customer Reviews:
Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03
What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.
I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.
One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.
aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2007-06-09
Some of the songs are quite good(mellow)others a little odd. Its what I expected, but not what you would expect.
Disappointment would be an understatement.......2007-06-04
It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.
Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.
If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.
I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.
Zzz..........2007-04-04
I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.
I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.
another set of hopes are smashed.......2007-03-29
the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.
It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulley

I love this CD! It's fun to hear the remakes of familiar Beatles hits done by contemporary artists, in a respectful and classy way. Puts a new spin on an old favorite.

I REALLY ENJOYED THE MUSIC WHEN I WATCHED THE VIDEO AND FELT INCLINED TO BUY THE SOUND TRACK. I AM GLAD I DID. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTD.
Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21
I have to admit I have never seen the 2001 movie from which this soundtrack is based, nor do I know the significance of the Beatles music to the characters. However, once I heard Rufus Wainwright's acoustic cover of "Across the Universe", a touching performance that puts his yearning, mournful voice to good use, I was curious what other surprises could be in store on this disc. I later found out the reason these musicians were recruited for the recording was a matter of economics. Producer Andy Gershon wanted to use the original Beatles recordings, but apparently, Michael Jackson, who owned the rights to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, was charging $300K for each song they recorded. As it turns out, the resulting disc is pretty solid, offering a great variety of reinterpretations of familiar songs - some quite wonderful, others less so but none too painfully.
Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.
Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".
Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.
Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09
It will always be incredibly challenging to match the artistic talent that The Beatles possessed. Nevertheless, this set of songs by the artists on this CD is as good as it gets to achieving a proper, respectful tribute to The Beatles with thoughtful and passionate cover songs.
The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.
The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!
Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."
The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.
Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.

It's a delirious treat, watching the full weight of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds open their November 2004 Brixton Academy gig with the menacing thwack of "Hiding All Away," as they do on the first of two DVDs in this live mega-set. They're swept away, Cave and his mates--Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey and the keyboardists and drummers and background singers. Feet stomp, hair flies, the sounds wallop. Without Blixa Bargeld for the first time, the Bad Seeds have a gospel-tinged bigness, an urgent intensity. The multicamera DVD shots are brilliant, the sound impeccable. Of course that last bit is all that matters on the pair of CDs that round out this set, and they sound phenomenal. Cave knows drama, from the lyrics to the vocal bellow to the full-on unrelenting orchestral power of a guitar, a bass, a violin, a couple keyboards, and a couple drummers--backed by four ingeniously true-to-form backup vocalists. If you've even a passing interest in the ecstasy of live musical abandon, this is a necessary indulgence. If you're a Cave fan, you won't be able to get enough. --Andrew Bartlett

THE ABATTOIR BLUES TOUR features songs from critically acclaimed 2004 double album ABATTOIR BLUES / THE LYRE OF ORPHEUS, plus an array of classic material from the band's repertoire. The 2 CDs contain live recordings from various dates on the 2004 "Abattoir Blues" tour. The 2 DVDs contain footage from two live concerts: first disc taken from one of the bands' 3 sold out "Abattoir Blues" concerts at London's Brixton Academy (November 11th 2004); second disc offers excerpts from London's Hammersmith Apollo show filmed during 2003 "Nocturama" tour. The DVDs also include all the promotional videos from the last two albums, plus special bonus behind the scenes footage of the "Bring It On" video.

Cave's Best DVD to Date.......2007-07-24
Since I became a Nick Cave fan some years back and have had the good fortune to see him live several times, I haven't been able to get enough of his music. So as soon as Abattoir Blues Tour came to my attention, I ordered my copy.
Well, OK, the songs presented here are mostly from the Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus double CD so you may wonder why you need to own this as well. The answer is that the quality of the DVDs and the power of the live performances make this nearly essential for any hard-core fan of Nick Cave. What I like about it best are that the performances are not taken from just one show, but shows done on different days and in different moods all over Europe.
On the sonic side, my favorites are mostly older cuts but also a couple I really like from the album being toured. Disc one favorites include Red Right Hand, The Ship Song, and The Weeping Song. On Disc two, I most enjoy Carry Me, Easy Money, God Is In The House (you'll notice he's dropped a verse), and the morbidly humorous Lay Me Low.
As for the DVDs, the first disc best brings to life Easy Money, Nature Boy, and Carry Me. Though I like Stagger Lee, I didn't particularly like the rendition here. The second DVD not only has great live renditions of Bring It On, Breathless, and Christina The Astonishing, but also some entertaining though sometimes cheesy promotional video footage. My favorite is the promo for Bring It On.
I own all other previous Cave DVDs and this one is the best yet. Though in common with some other reviewers I would like to have seen more of his back catalogue covered, I think that fans are lucky at this price to get as much as is offered here. It isn't enough however to get just the DVD. For the low price asked you would be foolish not to get this dual CD/DVD set. Order it now while it is still available.
Great disc set.......2007-05-25
The CDs and DVD's were awesome. Great music and video. Had a skip on one disc, but other than that quality was great and nicely packaged. Got Grinderman CD afterwards and still a Nick Cave fan bigtime.
Next Best Thing.......2007-05-14
A Nick Cave live show has so much raw intensity, grit, strength and emotion that it is awfully difficult to imagine capturing it on any recording medium. This set does its level best to record and share all that is involved in the experience of a live Cave show and, like some of the past video efforts, provides some rare behind-the-scenes footage of this very private, tortured artist (who just happens to be the greatest songwriter alive today, in my humble opinion). We in North America have been a bit neglected of late by Mr. Cave, but for those of us who can't afford to travel to see this phenomenal performance, at least we can still see what his live shows offer today, without the dancing, sweat and ringing ears...
Wall of sound?.......2007-05-13
In all due respect to Phil Spector, screw him! The amazing layered sound Nick Cave and his cohorts have created since the Nocturama album has just gotten more and more nuanced and blown apart. This CD and DVD set is a must for any fan of Nick or just simple damn rock'n'roll. No one else even comes close to this pure musical experience. And then there's Grinderman...
More later..................
What a deal!.......2007-04-19
As fans know, Nick Cave didn't tour Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus in America. Too bad because it's some of his strongest material. I saw him when he was in Seattle touring No More Shall We Part and it was one of the best concert experiences of my life. He's an incredible performer and the Bad Seeds are a great band.
This is 2 DVDs and 2 CDs for about $27. The quality of the contents will not disappoint anyone. It's not quite the same as being there live but it's very good and its the best we're going to get until he decides to tour America again.

Beautiful!.......2007-04-24
I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.
Winged Migration CD.......2007-02-08
Awesome, for the most part- best after watching the documentary. A couple of songs had to skip through, but the rest is a good post movie mental review- watch the movie first...
Beautiful Soundtrack.......2007-01-06
I loved this movie and the soundtrack makes it ever better. I havent bought a CD in a while and this one is reasonably priced and rare.
WINGED MIGRATION.......2006-08-29
The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.
THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22
Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

Real class.......2007-06-24
Abbado has created an excellent anthology of Mendelssohn's symphonic output - rich, lush and balanced. A+
Great set.......2007-05-18
By my calculations, this is the single best set of Mendelssohn symphonies out there today. Though better versions of the "Reformation," "Scottish," and "Italian" Symphonies exist in other disks, I still like the interpretations offered by Abbado and the LSO.
For the "Reformation", and "Italian" Symphonies, I'd recommend John Eliot Gardiner and the Vienna Philharmonic's DG set.
For the Scottish Symphony I'd go with Karajan's recording with the BPO (that CD also comes with the best "Hebrides Overture" recording available, and a pretty good "Italian Symphony" interpretation, too).
All of the overtures in this set are performed very well, both in technical execution and musical interpretation. The Hebrides (a work far ahead of its time), in particular, is a fine recording. So is "Overture 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." I really have grown fond of the "Ruy Blas" overture as well.
Another reviewer complained that the interpretations in this set are "too Classical." I think they are correct in saying the set is Classically performed, but I think that works with Mendelssohn, as he was "the Romantic Mozart."
Overall this is a great set, and a good way to become familiar with the music of Felix Mendelssohn, or build your Mendelssohn library.
MENDELSSOHN: 5 Symphonies/7 Overtures (LSO/Claudio Abbado) DG 471 467-2.......2006-07-13
Unlike many all-digital compilations offered by one orchestra and conductor, this collection of Mendelssohn favorites is outstanding in performance and interpretation throughout. Maestro Abbado shows a genuine affection for the composer and his genius by the sequence of selections on each disc, and I find no weak performances anywhere in this remarkable recording.

Great Concept but Not So Great Execution!.......2006-06-14
First, the good: Great box design for packaging, great booklet in various languages describing the history of all the performed works, great value for money, excellent representation of the great Mendelssohn's best works.
Now, the bad: the problem with compilations like this is that the material tends to have been recorded at different times and places and frequently by different personnel on various recording equipment of varying quality. What this means is that some tracks within each disc sound much better then others and even whole discs come in varying sound qualities.
Fortunately, the best disc, disc one starts out very well with the great first symphony and ends with the composer's best Overtures and the quality of the sound recording is very good. Then we get to disc 2 and the sound quality can only be described as abysmal. The difference in the sound is like night and day when compared with the first disc. The third disc sounds much better but is still not as good as the first disc while the last disc comes somewhere in between the second and third.
There's no doubting the quality of the performances though by Claudio Abbado and the LSO and of course the choice of material but too bad about the inconsistency of the sound quality from track to track and from disc to disc.
Still, the 3 stars are for the good points listed above and for the great disc 1.
More of Mendelssohn to Love.......2005-11-08
I had heard all the music on here before interpreted by other conductors and other symphonies but Claudio Abbado proved to be the most efficient for me. Thanks to the world's leading classical music label- Deutsche Grammophone -we are able to hear a complete set of Mendelssohn's symphonies and overtures with the acclaimed London Symphony in a beautiful and surprisingly afforadable album. For music that is this good, I was surprised that it wasn't a little more expensive. But good, right ? Just more of Mendelssohn to love. On this album: his symphonies 1-5, Scherzo in G Minor from the Octet for Strings, the Overture to A Midsumer Night's Dream incidental music and Hebrides Overture. These are the most famous Mendelssohn creations. His Fourth Symphony is the "Italian" symphony, with lyrical, bouncy rhythms and classical harmony. The Midsummer Night's Dream overture encompasses romanticism at its peak, with sprightly strings representing the mischievous fairies that figure prominently in the Shakespeare comedy. The Hebrides Overture is evocative of wintery landscapes and sea breezes, a fine example of a tone poem and musical painting at its best. Its haunting melody is instantly recongizable. Abbado is clearly suited for this kind of music and it's refreshing to see him stray from the usual Italian repertoire he is most famous for. Still, inescapably, his Italian soul stands out but this gives this music more color, more volume and lyricism than what can often succumb to stale, cold English interpretations like Andre Previn's conducting. No offense to Mr. Previn, who has produced some brilliant music.

This culling of the "best" cuts from the Bad Seeds' songbook avoids the pratfalls of many best-of compilations. First off, the songs aren't arranged chronologically, but instead for effect, raveling new with old, weepy ballads with adrenaline-pumped rockers. In addition, there aren't any rare live tracks, alternative takes, remixes, acoustic versions, or B-sides that clutter other compilations. What you get is pure Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds in all their gloomy glory. Things get off with a bang with the rollicking "Deanna" and the carnivalesque "Red Right Hand" that display Nick Cave's literary and narrative talent. After the wacked preacherman blues stomp of the excellent track "Tupelo," the disc slides into a series of ballads that highlight his baritone croon. "(Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For?" captures Cave in a, gasp, sentimental and lovely mood. The disc closes out with "From Here to Eternity," and the band hits the steamroller tempo with apocalyptic might. The Best Of... is a wonderful introduction to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, but even weathered purists will enjoy the juxtaposed presentation of these songs. --Tod Nelson
Customer Reviews:
best of cds are deadends for me.......2007-02-20
I'm always very reluctant to introduce myself to artists through best of cds. It's a survey and I know that if I'm buying a survey that's probably because I'm not interested enough in the artist to get full albums. Nothing wrong with that but I like to be damn sure before I walk down that road that I'm not missing out on something better when I do it.
Nick Cave is a case where I'm glad I didn't go the best of route. He's had such a long career with definate shifts in style that a single disc can't even really give you a proper introduction to all that Nick does. Which is of course what this cd tries to do. It's all over the place. If you're interested in getting into Nick I would recommend just get an album. I know there's an intimidating number of them and honestly alot of them are the sort that don't hit you right away. So if you're still interested I'd recommend starting with Henry's Dream or Murder Ballads if you'd like the more rocking Nick Cave. The Boatman's Call (or as I like to call it "Nick Cave in Love") is the softer more lyrical alternative if you, you know, like your violent references less obvious.
Highlights from:
Henry's Dream
--Papa Won't Leave You Henry
--I Had a Dream Joe
--When I First Came To Town
Murder Ballads
--Stagger Lee
--O'Malley's Bar
--Where the Wild Roses Grow
The Boatman's Call
--Idiot Prayer
--West Country Girl
--People Ain't No Good
So, in summary if you want a survey cool. This isn't a bad one, but if you (like me) know buying a best of means you'll never buy another disc by the band, and think that might not be a good thing, go ahead and check out an album. You won't regret it (unless you do).
A Great Start For Beginning Cave Fans.......2006-09-10
I first became familliar with Nick Cave through an article in Entertainment Weekly. I found him to be a very interesting person and I seriously considered getting into his music, but I didn't buy one of his album until about a week ago.
"The Best Of The Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds" is a 16 track collection of some of the most amazing songs I've ever heard. Cave's lyrics more often than not approach the same level of complexity and brilliance as those of Dylan and Lennon. Songs like "Red Right Hand", "Tupelo", the achingly beautiful "Into Your Arms" and many other songs here are some of the most vivid musical experiences one can ever have. Other standouts include the wild "From Her To Eternity", the eerie "Stranger Than Kindness" and the heartwrenching "Nobody's Baby Now".
The liner notes makes for a good read and the sound quality is great. Definitely a must for fans of good music.
Not quite the best of Nick Cave, but coming close..........2006-07-03
I never understood Nick Cave's fixation with his uproaring, cheerful sounding song "Deanna", but it is the opening track on an album which is called "The best of Nick Cave" so apparently I must be missing something crusial here.
More understandable choises follow, like the Godfearing thunder of "Tupelo", the instant spoken word classic "Red right hand" and of course Nick's micro-epic tale of a dead horse "The Carny".
A couple of ballads are carefully mixed in, like "Into my arms" and "(Are you) the one I've been waiting for?" from the very overrated "The Boatmans's call", but nothing, I say again, nothing from the sublime "No more shall we part".
More classic songs from the mad preacher catalogue can be found, like "The mercy seat", to me still untouchable, for its message about "good and ungood" and its maniacal tension build-up. There is the omnipresent "The weeping song", which can't be left out of any serious Nick Cave anthology, just as his podium-trasher "From her to etirnity". (Being made an instant classic, partly because of the "live" performance in the movie "Wings of desire")
The real surprise is "Stranger than kindness", not much mentioned where Cave dwellers go, but to me still one of the man's most haunting songs.
But with the inclusion of "Henry Lee" and the cheesy Kylie Minogue duet "Where the wild roses grow" the choises become a little too obvious and less serious. Not only are they really not the best Cave has done in general or on the "Murder ballads" album specifically, they occupy space that should be left open for songs that are infinitely more important. What to think of early Cavian art like "The six strings that drew blood" from "The firstborn is dead" LP, "She fell away" or "Saint Huck"?
The reason for not including these ones are, seeming to me, very simple: these last three songs are, well... let's say... just not so very accessible for any first timer, who might nowadays be a little more straight popmusic orientated. The songs are too experimental, so the editors of the "best of" CD have left those out, knowing that the true fans will remember them and cherish them anyway. A poor excuse.
In the end it's a collection that is perhaps more of a great introduction to the man's vocabulary, than a quintessential "Best of". And, mind you, there is a little difference.
A Terrific Compiliation...........2005-08-24
This is an outstanding compilation of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, however, you could probably piece together another 20 songs or so of Bad Seeds material and create a compilation just as strong if not stronger. Nick Cave is an outstanding songwriter and sings with a great dark and deadpan delivery. My only disappointment with this band is that Blixa Bargeld's influence is minimal which has always made me wonder why he joined the band to begin with other than to probably pick up a steady paycheck.... The Best Of is well worth the price especially if you're new to the band.
Brooding rock music features outstanding Kylie duet.......2005-05-03
Nick has clearly led a troubled life as his music is always of the brooding, melancholy kind. The obvious comparisons are with Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, but some of Johnny Cash's darker music, especially the albums that he recorded with Rick Rubin towards the end of his life, also ventures into this territory. The difference being (apart from their musical styles) that the others cheered up some of the time - I don't think Nick recorded any cheerful music at all. While Nick built up a significant following for his albums, it is no surprise to find that his singles made only limited impact.
The real surprise is that Nick recorded a duet with Kylie (he should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky) about a death pact - Where the wild roses grow. It features Kylie singing in an almost whispery voice, very different from her usual style. If you regard Kylie as just a singer of lightweight pop music, this song will make you think again. I love the song but it doesn't sound like the type of song to be a hit. Nevertheless, it just missed the UK top ten in 1995, becoming Kylie's first UK hit of any size for over two years and Nick's biggest UK hit ever, by a considerable margin.
Nick made the UK top forty on one other occasion, when he recorded a duet with P J Harvey. This was with the song Henry Lee, a traditional folk song for which Nick wrote new backing music. Despite making the UK top forty, it spent just one week on the chart, as did all of Nick's other minor hits, some but not all of which are featured in this compilation. So the only real UK hit that Nick had was Where the wild roses grow.
Apart from the two duets, there are several other outstanding tracks here including The mercy seat (about a convict on death row), Tupelo (about a preacher c and the bible), The carny (about another of life's losers), Nobody's baby now (about Nick at a difficult time in life).
If you like brooding, melancholy rock music, you'll like this. Whether it is possible to enjoy it in the true sense of the word, I'm not sure - I always follow it by something that'll cheer me up, but there's no denying Nick's talent.

In the Cave with the Siddhars.......2007-07-29
When you listen to this CD it will put you in a space you normally must meditate to get to.
I love listening to this as I lay down to sleep, and I feel like I'm in the cave with Nandhi. This is also a CD that veteran meditators will instantly identify with, it cuts across paths it takes you 'there', and
this isn't like your other favorite CDs, you won't find anything like this
thats been touched up in a studio.
Can you say primal?

Awesome. If anybody in meditation I think they need this CD.......2007-07-20
I do meditation every day to open 7 chakras. It used toi take some time like 20 to 30 minutes to open all chakras. But when I started listening to this CD then within few minutes all chakras started opening and lasted till the end of CD.
It is a mind blowing CD and the best ever I purchased in my whole life. I am sure that I am going to listen to this music every day.
Thanks to the whole production team, musicians and everybody involved in producing this CD. Keep up the great work. Great work Nandhi.
People can look into this web site for further info if anybody is interested.

Those sounds...a mirror for me.......2007-07-11
Dear Customers,
Thank you for sharing these wonderful arrangements. Cave of the Siddhars. Your music is instantly translated into soul messages. Musical soul massage. I don't know if it was my conscious mind or my unconscious mind but one of them surrendered to the music thanks to the constant didgeridoo in the background. My mind remembered a timeless aspect of itself. Turiya Nada's music that for the first few seconds had sounded extremely exotic fit into the mold of my being, as a result when I combined the music with asana practice I was able to deepen in the poses knowing that I was being "cushioned" by the call of Turiya Nada. The final "Arohara" invocations of the final tracks are perfect for the ending of savasana for me...and I believe for others too.
Thanks,
Nathaniel

i remember listening to the cd before going to a healing movement class. the music and chants vibrate the truth of being. i was able to feel grounded with the ability to completely empty out into the silence of the divine. one of my challenges it to keep my feet here while embracing the inner light. this cd is very supportive of the healing journey and wherever i am in the moment. a beautiful merging of primal sounds and pure light. thank you for the gift of this cd!

Nick Cave's been writing songs about killing and other evil things since he first surfaced in 1980 as the Birthday Party's pale, skinny, goth-punk Jim Morrison. But the murder ballads that provide this set's title are different, tantalizingly deliberate. Sure, there's plenty of trademark Cave here, but Murder Ballads is a fascinating concept album that uses the narrative ballad form of the English folk tradition to tell of murder: random deaths, passion crimes, and killing sprees, all in one package. Cave clearly thrives in this genre, and he produces some of his sharpest and most facile writing to date. "Song of Joy," a genuinely scary campfire mystery of a murdered family and an unnamed killer, chillingly weaves clues into the lyrics, while "Where the Wild Roses Grow" is a narrative duet in which killer (Cave) and victim (pop star Kylie Minogue) reveal parallel tales. Cave even shows his knack for adaptation on Bob Dylan's "Death Is Not the End": he recontextualizes a song of heavenly comfort into a sort of zombie "We Are the World" (featuring Minogue, PJ Harvey, Shane MacGowan, and others) in which "death is not the end" of pain and suffering. Above all, Murder Ballads should be heard as a work of pulp fiction--as sensationally funny as it is harrowing. The already violent traditional song "Stagger Lee" becomes gangsta folk, so ridiculously packed with obscenity and brutality it would make the Geto Boys cringe. And Cave's (unintentional?) point to would-be censors--that bad-ass songs existed long before rappers polluted the airways--should not be missed. --Roni Sarig

soundtrack for a dark room.......2006-12-18
The painting on the front of the CD is clearly NOT a Bob Ross, for there is just no way that Bob Ross could adequately paint up some Nick Cave. The main problem has to do with the fact that there are no 'happy trees' in Nick Cave, and none especially in _Murder Ballads_. If there were, they were burnt down long ago. This disc may be one of his most popular, which gets some die-hard 'fans' to doubt it, but the tracks on this disc are soundly dark and violent and tender. Aside from a fine ensemble Dylan cover at the end, with PJ Harvey and Shane MacGowan among others, I find myself clinging to tracks like "Lovely Creature" and "Song of Joy," and "O'Malley's Bar" is its own western movie AND soundtrack combined.
So turn down the lights and break out a couple of bottles of your reddest wine. I'm going to be listening to this one all through Christmas.
bad seeds most popular..BUT i think:.......2006-10-18
One of their not-that-great cd.
the songs: Stagger Lee,Henry Lee,Where the wild roses grow and O'malleys bar are the only good songs on the album..the rest is just borrowed from other bad seeds records.
Lovely Creture - i hate the choir of girls lalalalalalala thing, yuck.
The curse of millhaven is just a faster henry lee melody..its not even good lyrically..
The kindness of strangers,i guess is quite alright, but i dont like the name,it's too similar to Stranger than kindness from Your funeral..my trial album.
Death is not the end is alright..but nothing more..a plus to Shane MacGowan.
Buy The good son instead..
Faces of Murder.......2006-07-17
4.5 stars
Watching Cave's amazing movie, _The Proposition_, last week brought me back to this highly noteworthy release in Cave's catalog. This is because _The Proposition_ is like one big, long murder ballad; like the album, it alternates between brutality, lyricism, a confusing mix of the two, and other emotions besides. I came close to wearing this CD out when I bought it at its release ten years ago (I know that's not supposed to be possible), but in the decade since it got lost in the mix of the rest of Cave's huge catalog (I'm especially partial to _More Pricks Than Kicks_, _From Her to Eternity_, and _The Boatman's Call_).
I have to say that _Murder Ballads_ definitely stands the test of time and is one of his best releases of the '90's. After the lukewarm _Henry's Dream_, Nick and the boys really hunkered down in the studio to create a truly distinctive piece. Its only true weakness is the ho-hum cover of Dylan's "Death Is Not the End" at the end of the CD. Otherwise, these are songs you can return to over and over, while always pulling some new sort of sensation out of the experience.
Starting with "Song of Joy," we hear the band spinning the kind of atmospheric psychoticism that they began to move away from more and more around the release of _Tender Prey_ (which, surprise, brought them more commercial success than ever before). What I'm suggesting here is that this song and a lot of the rest of the album is like a successful fusion of the bands more-ragged Birthday-Party-inspired Southern Gothic craziness exhibited on _Your Funeral My Trial_ with the slicker stuff like _Tender Prey_. Oh and "Song of Joy" is an absolutely terrifying beginning to this CD.
"Stagger Lee" is kind of a murder blues, much like "Crow Jane" and "O'Malley's Bar"; the band sets up a vamp and Nick just waxes evil over the whole thing. You'd be hard-pressed to find songs like these anywhere else.
The highlights of the album are the lyrical moments, all of them featuring female singers like PJ Harvey and Kylie Minogue. "Henry Lee," "Lovely Creature," and "Where the Wild Roses Grow" all manage to wrest considerable pathos from the most morbid of subject matter and this has everything to do with Cave's compositional skills, both on the keyboard and with his pen. The soaring duets also add to the uncanny effect. Absolutely indispensable listening.
With the release of _The Proposition_ to compare and contrast to this CD, we can rightly call Nick Cave the Master of the Macabre Love Lyric. Granted, there isn't much proper competition, but there is certainly something very noteworthy about exploring the sublime in the subject of death. On this album, Cave and the Seeds put it all out there. On _The Proposition_ he took it to epic proportions. Cave's got a lot of juice in him yet; one can only wonder what spin he will put on the faces of murder next.
The stuff that nightmares are made of.......2006-05-05
After "Let love in", the ultimate ode to lovesongs, loverman Nick Cave traps us all with his tongue-in-cheeck collection of murdurous hymns. Legends, myths, fairytales, rainy serial killer-stories, and even a Dylan cover, all are filled with dead bodies, buried underneath the soil, floating in a stream, wrapped in electrical wires or scattered across the floor of O'Maley's bar.
But these tales of vengeance, lust and mayhem aren't to be taken too serious, and fortunately so. Nick Cave likes to fool his listeners every now and then, and the black comedy genre, which is often filled with irony or cynism, is the right medium to trap your fans.
"Song of Joy" tells the tale of a man who wanders from place to place after his family got brutaly murdered. But there are hints that the narrator isn't what he appears to be, either. Add some quotes from John Milton's "Paradise Lost" (a refference also to be found in the 1994 serial killer movie "Se7en") and it's that Apocalyptic, end or the world-feeling Nick is bringing us, as he has done so many times before.
Next stop: "Stagger Lee", a delightfully obscene tale about a trigger-happy guy with itchy killer fingers and a smoking gun. It's sung in a kind of half spoken-word-like manner, much in the way Nick's famous "Red right hand" from the "Let love in" album was.
"Henry Lee" is the real ballad here, or shall we call it duet. P. J. Harvey and Nick Cave sing together this intimate little graveyard song.
Another duet follows, but this time it's the more widely known "Where the wild roses grow" with Kylie Monigue as both co-singer and victim of this tragic love story that ends in death and dismay.
"The curse of Millhaven" is simply all fire, lightning and chaos and with a length of 7 minutes, one of the bigger murder sprees.
The disc end with the the entire cast (Cave, Minogue, Harvey, Shane MacGowan, Blixa Bargeld) each singing some lines from Dylan's "Death is not the end". But not before "O'Maley's bar" is finished. Lasting more then 14 minutes and with some 36 plus strophes, this is the song in which both Nick Cave as his nameless narrator go `all the way'. Shooting his dumdum-like words to the audience as easily as the protagonist of this gruwesome story is shooting his bullets at all the visitors of the local bar, Nick Cave definitely must have a big wide grin on his face while performing this one.
Nobody survives in these collection of 10 musical thrillers, except the listener, who, like the audience in a movie theatere, sigh in relief after the the bad guy is shot, the demons are hushed back to their dwellings, and the end credits roll across the screen.
Lights on. Curtain closes.
And all that we're left with is each other, alive and well, ands a worn-down theatre floor scattered with popcorn and empty coca-cola bottles.
Totally overrated.......2006-02-07
If Metallica's beer-drinking lead singer called this one of his favorite albums because of its "gory details", then you know something must be wrong.
This is one of Mr.Cave's weakest albums not only because some of the lyrics are simply too cheesy to take them seriously(unless you're a goth teenager), but also because Cave made this record just to have fun with his buddies and girlfriends. The band never went on tour to support this album; they were exhausted after the Lollapalooza and Henry's Dream tours. They needed to relax. And that is exactly what they did in "Murder Ballads".
The only good thing about this album was the fact that Mr.Cave and his Seeds got a wider exposure here in the U.S. without having to sell out.
If I'm giving "Murder Ballads" two stars is simply because "Stagger Lee" is way too cool. Specially live.
Check out Your Funeral, My Trial, Tender Prey, or The Good Son if you really want to know what made Nick Cave and the Bad Seed legends.

Album Description
"How To Be Found" is comprised of previously unreleased tracks, written by dada and mixed by rock industry hearyweights Bob Clearmounton (Springsteen, Bowie) Scott Gordon and Tom Lord. The infectious collection of songs, newly mastered, is classic dada: smart, sharp lyrics, undeniable melodies and incredible musicianship by Joie Calio (vocals, bass), Michael Gurley (vocals, guitar) and Phil Leavitt (drums, vocals). Few Bands endure over a decade of work together. Fewer still, are delivering their strongest performances and material ten years down the road.

Let Me Explain..........2007-06-12
Getting a new Dada record is like going back in time and getting a new Beatles album- life changing, confusing, entertaining, a logical development you could never have predicted.
First and foremost, they ROCK here. Real rock. The stuff that makes your feet move, makes babies, creates an impressionistic splash of words and notes that somehow captures a moment, or an emotion, or a person, or is just so freaking COOL that you join in because it feels **SO** good!
Far and away my favorite song here is "What's Happening To Steven", though my second favorite is about a 6 way tie. ("Crumble", "Nothing Like You", "Guitar Girl", "Any Day the Wind Blows", "Reason", "Love Is A Wierd Thing") How good is it? My 10 year old son loved it from the first time he heard it and we sing along with it, (just like we do with "Who You Are" from Puzzle) over and over in the car.
I am in awe of the way Dada construct and then play their songs. Great melodies, Solid drum/bass/guitar sound, a range of tempos, the interplay of the three as they sing together and, usually, a stand-out guitar solo. And they repeat this fetching combination 10-13 times on each album.
Of course, "What's Happening To Steven" NEVER DOES explain what's happening to Steven- but that's part of the charm of it isn't it?
Another helping of the good stuff!
What's Left To Be Said?.......2005-04-30
After reading all of the superlative reviews of DADA'S latest release: "How To Be Found"; I find it incredible that these guys are still so relevent musically.I've found myself listening to this CD over, and over and each time finding something in the songs that I had'nt heard before. The last song "Love Is A Weird Thing" is by itself, an example of why I never get tired of listening to these guys. It starts out slow, and then builds to an emotionally charged dynamic ending. All the other reviews are right: DADA are back, and better than ever!
Not their best album, but still great.......2005-03-27
I've seen Dada twice, once back in 94, after the release of American Highway Flower, and again about a year ago. There is no way you can possibly conceive how incredible a guitarist Mike Gurley is simply by listening to their recordings alone. He is phenomenal, and it is beyond me why they have gotten no air play whatsoever, besides Dizz Knee Land and Dim. Gurley is one of the most interesting musicians to listen to--his guitar work will captivate you, and you will be astounded by the sounds he can make with his instrument. If I had to say, "gee, I sure wish I could play guitar like him", I would say it about Gurley, he is by far one of the best. As far as How To Be Found goes, it's very good. Lots of nice rockers, "No one Like You" is an incredible song and "Love is a Weird Thing" is also very good, two of my favorite songs by Dada, and the two standout tracks on this CD. I think this follows nicely along the path Dada has started on since they began recording, and though it's not their best album, take into consideration what they've done before--how could you top albums like American Highway Flower or El Subliminoso?? Those are landmarks in modern rock. All in all, fans should not be disappointed by this album, I wasn't whatsoever. If ever Dada comes to your town, you better go see them--they put on one of the most incredible shows, and I guarantee if you like Dada now, you'll like them ten times more after you experience them live!!!
A fan's disappointment.......2005-01-02
I've been a fan & have listened to their music since the early 90's. I got all copies of their studio releases but this is the worst to crash in to my collection. It seems the magic's gone...the vocal harmony & catchy guitar lines(how i wish i could play the axe that way!). For starters, I'd recommend "Puzzle" first because for me that's where my addiction to their music started.
To the "greatest roady trio", you got yourself a filipino fan...but my heart just sank on this latest release you had but still...more power to you guys!!!
The Greatest Unknown Band Returns to Top Form!.......2004-11-21
There was another review here that was quite negative, but it was because she thought she was buying something completely different! Dada has been around since the early nineties, and after a hiatus of sorts, they reformed to produce "How To Be Found". I'll echo what many other reviews and comments here and across the Internet say: dada is the most under-rated power trio of the nineties and now. These guys are musician's musicians! And HTBF is as good as their first album, "Puzzle". If you're new to dada, pick either or both of these albums, then dive into their other releases for more goodness. And if you EVER get a chance to see them live, you MUST go! You will not be disappointed ;-)
