    Album Description

John Foxx's Cathedral Oceans is a twenty-year project combining ambient music with his own photographs that slowly morph into each other to create the effect of a "moving stained glass window." He recently performed an improvised excerpt from the project with pianist Harold Budd (with whom he has recorded two albums, Translucence and Drift Music) and guitarist Bill Nelson.

    Album Description

John Foxx describes Cathedral Oceans as being ''Music for a vast, half-submerged, ruined cathedral.'' Others might describe it as the ultimate chill out music. The shifting, shimmering voices & echoes place it between New Age soundscapes & the likes of Brian Eno's Music For Airports. This mid-price 2 CD set is beautifully packaged in a gatefold double digipak, with imagery designed by John Foxx himself. Recording originally began in 1983, & whilst Volume I was previously available as a limited edition, Volume II is previously unreleased in any form. 21 tracks. Edsel Records. 2003.

    4 out of 5 stars Cathedral Oceans.......2005-04-28

Dive into a ethereal and submersive work of art in Foxx's "Cathedral Oceans." An original concept album that deals with something along the lines of a vast, invisible church that exists... somewhere. As for the music itself, it is very much as the name would suggest, with vast and wide church choirs set amidst ambient phrases. Without a doubt, it fills a gap in my record collection (Christian vocal music).

John Foxx sure is an interesting character. After being left behind in the New Wave 80's rock scene he started cranking out these deep, abstract concept albums left and right. My favorite of all his works is the one he did with minimalist composer, Harold Budd. It was on the double album "Translucence and Drift" that Foxx did some of his most amazing work. I think Harold's minimalism is a good counterpoint to Foxx's wall of sound. Indeed, there are times on "Oceans" that I wish Foxx had simply left a minimal ambient track without vocals here and there.

Regardless, it is a refreshing though slightly New Agey work of art that I welcome with open arms in this age of shallow, transient flotsam. Best tracks are :

    Shimmer Symmetry
    City as Memory
    Aven Collonade
    Through Summer Rooms

This album is beyond words. John Foxx is truly an innovator. He separates himself from the "creative geniuses" of his age with this collection. David Sylvian and John Foxx have become the only musicians from this era that are standing-out, yet releasing other cds that show they can rock. Bravo John. If Dead Can Dance could have only done something like this, their cds would have been worth keeping.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely beautiful listening experience........2006-05-17

Like most of us, I was numbed out by the events of 9/11. I couldn't listen to music at all for days. Eveerything that I tried to listen to irritated me. Then I put this on. This soothing ambient work by John Foxx brought me back, so to speak from that situation. I have since given my copy to a good friend, as I opted to purchase the double cd reissue Cathedral Oceans 1 and 2. Tranquility when you'll want it most. Highly recommended. Very spiritual. An absolutely beautiful listening experience.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-01-22

This album is amazing, its nothing like the 'normal' music John Foxx plays and produces. When I met him on the 21st of Jan, 2003 he said that this was his proudest moment in his musical career, becayse it was very personal. I saw pictures slowly moving on a glass screen with this album playing = amazing.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent ambient album by Mr John Foxx.......2002-11-05

Don't judge this CD by John Foxx's background in the pop/rock business. This is totally different, an ambient album, the same genre as Brian Eno, Harold Budd and Steve Roach. Foxx gives a special thanks to Mr Harold Budd, so it seems like he's been involved in some way (the text doesn't explain how). The album has similarities with Eno, Budd and Roach, but at the same time Foxx creates his own sound using his unique voice, often processed by large hall/cathedral reverbs. They're sometimes played backwards, which creates a haunting mood. This is an excellent album for people who like ambient. If you enjoy the works of Eno and Budd, then get this album. You won't regret it.

      5 out of 5 stars HAUNTING.......1999-08-28

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE JOHN FOXX GOES NEW AG

      2 out of 5 stars Well Yeah,,,.......1999-08-22

First you have to get this album in perspective. It's by John Foxx - but he's totally reinvented himself. All rock pretensions have gone and he's now a new age guy. In fact, he's trying real hard to be Harold Budd, so if you know who he is, you're right on track.

I bought it because I'm a fan of John's other music. Given the nature of the recording I must confess to being disapointed. I'd die to hear him put out another "The Garden" or "Systems of Romance."

That aside I guess I should talk about the alubm in the correct context. I also am a fan of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schultz, Andreas Vollenweider, Brian Eno - and yes, the aforementioned Harold Budd. So how does Foxx stack up? Well - frankly he doesn't bring anything new to the table. This type of music can be emotive, no doubt about that. But it has nothing to do with the prson making the music - it's the timbre, the instrumentation. After more than ten years break - John has totally lost his way. I can't recommend this. Buy some Eno and get the real deal.
