Album Description

Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan is an ensemble of eight professional Canadian musicians with classical western musical training and extensive performance experience. They perform and record on an extended gamelan Degung indigenous to the Indonesian province of West Java (Sunda). Founded in 1983 and based in Toronto, Canada, this unique performing ensemble is dedicated to the development and expansion of its repertoire through the commissioning of new works by composers from Canada and around the world, as well as performing traditional Sundanese music. This recording presents a selection of such traditional pieces together with recent works by Sundanese composers, all in new arrangements by Evergreen Club members.

A soothing escape to a tropical paradise.......2005-03-12

The title says it all. It is an experience of music from another culture which in my mind is associated with a tropical paradise which I imagine existed prior to Dutch colonialism of now present day Indonesia. The gamelan orchestra consists of various sizes of suspended metallophones (percussion instruments with tuned metal bars), small bulbed gongs, large suspended gongs, and drums. With the soft gentle percussive nature of the music, the experience that I get from it is an expression of the slower tranquilizing rhythms of nature. This album is well worth the $9.98 for anyone looking to explore other realms of music.

Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

BLONDY'S SPIRITUAL PEAK........2002-02-26

Its a spiritual journey he artist is taking the listener to explore through meditation.Alpha Blondy celebrates both life and death, and realized that the journey of a great soul never ended.
Listening Alpha remind me mostly Bob Marley or vice versa. I see in both artists the seeds of pure Love,the sound of the preacher.

Great reggae mixed with tuneful pop mixed with African overtones. Blondy really combines the styles well and brings it altogether with his voice and talent. This was my first taste of Alha Blondy. It was sweet to hear it as well as to experience it while in his native land and to taste a bit of what he is cooking.

To this very day I find it difficult to explain what this music does in terms of shifting my consciousness. David Hykes' resonant chanting shifts one's cognitive system into virtual silence that allows one's awareness to move smoothly and progressively toward the sublime indescribable states that correspond to the purest intent.

Light a candle in the dark and open your mind to this surreal, otherworldly music. Astonishing harmonics inspire a deep sense of reverential awe. The gentle souls who created this music - using their voices only - have brought us a gift from across the divide, over mist shrouded mountains, from an undiscovered country. The soul cries in recognition of such beauty.

Amazing, one of my favorites CDs of all time.......2004-02-28

This CD (in addition to their CD entitled 'Harmonic Meetings', which included some instrumentation) is certainly one of my all time favorites, especially for altering one's consciousness, inducing a state of meditation or restfulness. David Hykes & the Harmonic Choir brings the human voice to its mysterious depths. The only thing (that I know of) with which this vocal style might compare is classical Tuvan or Tibetan singing. Also, there are also some slight similarities to the vocalizations of composer György Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna"/"Eternal Light" (see film soundtrack to '2001: A Space Odyssey'). I can't imagine any serious lover of music, human voice, or meditation from cherishing this very special CD by David Hykes & the Harmonic Choir.

Nearly makes me break down and cry..........2003-10-15

I first heard the parts of this CD which were used in the soundtrack to the film JACOBS LADDER-at once I sat up and took notice-this music is terrifying-in a way that touches one's soul.
The idea that all 'new age' muzak should be purile, sacherine pablum is laid to rest by this masterwork.

Vibrating Voices--Everything is Sound.......2002-11-19

You'll never hear anything like this CD anywhere. Hykes and his group have constructed amazing pieces of music based on the natural overtone sound of the human voice and by necessity, in order to hear the overtones, they sing very long vowel sounds, controlling the harmonics by mouth shape, tongue position, diaphragm control, etc. This CD was recorded in a cathedral which amplifies the overtones and doubles the sound of each voice. The effect--particularly on the track "Arc Descents"--is hair-raising and wonderful. I still can't figure out how their voices are able to descend in sliding tones for a full five minutes!

I have many friends who haven't moved on from trance, but every time I play this cd they change their minds about drum&bass. This cd is the best to flow to, I love it!

Tech Step that doesn't get carried away.......2000-10-18

A nice duo to hear put Tech Step and D&B flavors in motion. Tight synths with smooth arid flow = redemption for DJ Rap (last album was weak), BUT I STILL LOVE YOU BABY!!!. Big Ups to SOLAR! Great CD.......2000-08-01

This cd is a great compilation by Kenny ken & Dj Rap. They are both very talented artists. I own the first release of this CD from England. It is the same except for the last 2 tracks. I think that anyone that likes drum & bass/Jungle will really enjoy this cd. I really want to hear the last two songs on this release though. Enjoy the talent.
