Pieces of the Sun

Like John Paul Jones and Jeff Beck, Tony Levin is a musician's musician whose collaborations sparkle (in Levin's case with such eclectics as Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, and Lou Reed), but it's his solo stuff that really sails off the chart. And like the aforementioned players, Levin is anything but an oldies machine; he uses each new recording as a way of further juxtaposing his primary instruments (bass and Chapman stick) against the weirdest, most challenging stuff he can score. Consequently, Pieces of the Sun is, predictably, wholly unpredictable, with Levin and his 2001 touring band lighting into a set of headphone-melting instrumentals best described as pulsing prog-rock built on the kind of awesome playing that, in a concert setting, attracts packs of drooling amateurs to the stage to watch the musician's hands. "Dog One"--an unreleased recording with Gabriel--appears rerecorded here as a jittery, piano-and-guitar speckled opus with muffled call-and-response vocals, while the percussive "Tequila" shines the spotlight on a mournful tenor sax before turning things over to ambient synth and lazy electric guitar. With the exception of the languid and loose closing track, "Silhouette," everything on Pieces of the Sun feels urgent, with Levin once again acquitting himself and his generation of charges of stagnation. --Kim Hughes

After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Irving Berlin at his best.......2007-06-26

Kiri's glorious voice interprets Irving Berlin masterpieces beautifully with expression and respect for these American favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Get's my vote!.......2004-04-03

OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.

But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.

We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.

I, for one, feel privileged.

Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy and Beautiful.......2002-09-01

This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-05-14

If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

1 out of 5 stars Simply Dreadful.......2001-01-17

Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.

Her version of "What'll I do" alone earns her a place on the top ten list of abominable recordings of American music.

5 out of 5 stars No peace, but plenty of sun..........2003-09-20

The reader probably knows Tony from Peter Gabriel's band and King Crimson, and here he steps out on his own with a rousing set that recalls some of the best work of his employers. Apollo itself is a wonderful 3-part opus with Crimsonic mayhem, lilting Yes/Genesis acoustic passages, and a soaring finale that keeps ascending like the morning star itself. The band is in in top form--Jerry Marotta has a perfect balance of solid groove with just enough chops and flair to wow the listener, Larry Fast coats the compositions in lush synth textures that bring the work of Tony Banks to mind, and Jesse Gress (a new face for me) alternately waxes Beck (Jeff Beck!) and Belew as he proves a versatile foil for Levin. Levin himself, as always, is the consummate musician, never unnecessarily flashy, but always very tasty and anchoring his compositions with rock-solid, unbreakable grooves. He gets quite a bit of mileage out of his arsenal including fretless upright, 5-string bass with "funk fingers", and his well-traveled Chapman Stick. Parts of the album recall the synth-laden, pulsating drama of his former employer Peter Gabriel, especially the title track and the "Fifth Man." For me, the high point was the remake of Synergy's "Phobos", which has one of the hookiest odd-time riffs one will ever hear, and features stunning playing from the whole lineup. Amazing, and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Anything He Touches is Good!.......2003-02-21

This record is growing on me everyday. There is nothing radically different about this prog rock record, but it is solid, well written and performed and sufficiently powerful. Best tune is "The Fifth Man". The writing is very good. The players on the record are all top-notch. This is prog rock that is niether dark nor bright. Extremely well executed! It as something on it for everybody that respects Tony Levin's work` or prog rock in general, Very little vocals. Great spin!

5 out of 5 stars Driving and Hypnotic.......2003-01-11

After years of noting Tony Levin's appearance on just about every disc I owned, it was interesting to first note his appearance as a 'solo' artist. With Jerry Marotta, Larry Fast and Jesse Gress, the Tony Levin Band is truly a super prog-rock-jazz band. Marotta's skins are at times driving or hypnotic. Fast is a genius on keys and their electronic moods, and Gress flies in and around the tunes apparently effortlessly (although we know it can't be both so complex and effortless!). Of course, Levin's use of bass, stick, and cello lead you around by the soul.
The compositions are well balanced to showcase everyone's talents, but in a way that avoids obvious showcasing. Brilliant.
If you get a chance to see this group live - do not miss it

4 out of 5 stars levin "el desconcertante".......2002-12-18

2 out of 5 stars Most tracks seem unfinished.......2002-06-03

Tony Levin is clearly a talented bass guitarist with the soul of a true progressive rock artist. This album, while conveying this talent and soul, unfortunately falls short in terms of giving the listener a full fledged, finished product with most of the tunes. It's like a handful of rough studio mixes and jam session recordings were suddenly deemed good enough to release. Every track shows promise but many could use editing and tweaking of some sort. This CD goes in my car for background driving music as a rhythmically interesting album, but it's not for living room, bedroom, or party listening.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY!!!.......2001-03-03

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

4 out of 5 stars Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

5 out of 5 stars excellent overview of contemporaneous classic music.......2007-03-22

excellent overview of contemporaneous classic music.

Should be continued, plenty more 20th-century composers to be discovered.

5 out of 5 stars For the price you can't lose.......2007-02-21

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

Described as "a major Russian prodigy," Nina Kotova, daughter of two musicians, had a promising musical beginning, but had to leave Russia and spent some years modeling and composing before returning to the cello. This debut recording proves that she is indeed very talented, but is designed mainly to display her tone, which is full and pure in every register and rather beautiful, if without much variation. The program consists of short pieces, mostly transcriptions, predominantly Russian and predominantly slow, sentimental, and melancholy. Kotova made many arrangements herself, presumably including the orchestrations, and there are also several of her own compositions. She describes the latter as representing real-life events and experiences; several contain elements of jazz and improvisation. The orchestrations throughout are full of color and sound effects, but seem more suitable as accompaniments for films than for concert pieces. The playing reflects the rather limited expression and mood of the music, and is clean, disciplined, and controlled. It will be interesting to see how this gifted player approaches a musically more substantial, varied program. --Edith Eisler

    1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2002-10-17

This was my first exposure to Ms Kotova's work, and I have to say it does not inspire me to listen to her more. Perhaps I should have started with some other work of hers. The folks who glow about her tone, etc obviously have no exposure to REAL cellist. Suffice it to say, if you are a true classical music fan, run away from this garbage as fast as you can. If, on the other hand, you live by the brilliance of cHarlot Church, or Andrea Bocelli, then this is exactly the sort of thing for you. For those who sincerely want to hear what alternatives there are to this cellist, may I suggest anything by Janos Starker or Mischa Maisky, and Anner Bylsma for variety. THEN we can talk cello.

    5 out of 5 stars luxurious tone.......2002-02-08

I have the great pleasure of living in the city as Ms. Kotova,
Dallas, Texas. Although I do not know her well, her playing is
stunningly beautiful and this CD brings the best out in her. i
look forward to her next CD

    5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2001-11-14

What a gorgeous tone, expressive, delicate and powerful all at
once. I look forward to the next CD, hopefully concerto
    repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Haunting and Lingers in the Mind.......2001-11-03

I bought Nina Kotova's debut CD after my parents mentioned how thrilled friends of theirs in Salt Lake City had been after attending one of her concerts. I played this CD two or three times a week for six months until other members of my household started pleading for more musical variety. I still put it on occasionally, and more often when I'm alone. It has a haunting quality to it, a sweet beauty and melancholy that linger in the mind long after the music is over. I have bought it as a gift to friends and family members, including a long-term houseguest of ours who practically requested it when she left. Kotova's life story is fascinating -- persecution, exile to two countries, further musical studies, modeling (!), etc., but the main theme in her life and that of her parents is love of music, and it shows on every track of this CD. It is a wonderful debut piece for a relatively young artist. I keep checking back here to see if she has come out with a new CD, and I look forward to hearing her over the years as she matures as an artist.

    3 out of 5 stars Sweet tone.......2001-07-27

I discovered Kotova through a Readers Digest article, and was intrigued, so I bought the disc. The many short selections of the cd is not enough to fully determine what she can bring to the great masterpieces. Based on the selections contained on the cd, one can immediately tell that she is a great cellist with a deep resonant tone. The standards, like Vocalise and Petroushka are well played. The other pieces have been orchestrated by Kotova, which makes the interpretation unique. I always enjoy hearing common pieces in new setting. Let's wait till Kotova tackles some warhorses, like the Shostakovich concerto, or the Bach concertos. If it's anything like her performances here, they will be welcomed by the classical community.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning & atmospheric.......2003-11-23

Many casual listeners of classical music (like myself) are often drawn to particular albums within this genre because of the timeless atmosphere and mood that we hope any particular release will encompass. Something that sounds like it could have come from hundreds of years ago, dripping in history and long forgotten places and people, and yet still saying something to todays listener.
I am not even a fan in general of brass quintets, quartets, ect, so if it weren't for a friend at work having purchased this CD, and my own being a major fan of the under-recorded guitarist Peter Maunu (who guests here), I would have never picked up this disc.
I've been buying just about anything Peter Maunu plays on after buying, and loving, his single 1990 solo album as well as his many appearences with Mark Isham (often on soundtracks), so I borrowed this disc to listen to at work from my friend. Then I borrowed it again, then again. Sure, I could have easily burned a CD copy myself from his, but these guys aren't selling CD's like they were Brittany Spears and I thought buying my own copy is kind of like a vote for these guys saying "yeah, this is a classic work". Besides, I even like the cover and the liner info (I just NEED to know who plays what on each track, who the guest musicians are, ect).
So you have this excellently recorded disc with the brass quintet with ever so subtle additions of Peter Maunu's guitar, some voices, and some subtle percussion and fretless bass from two other Mark Isham associates, Kurt Wortman and Doug Lunn. They all add to the great atmosphere (there's that word again) of this disc.
I've had my own copy of this disc for a couple of weeks now and it's the one disc that has not left my cd changer. I just change all the other discs around it it seems.
To top it off, I am a major Mark Isham fan and among all of the ancient works on this disc they do a version of Isham's "The Melancholy Of Departure" from Isham's "We Begin" duet disc with Art Lande.
I would recommend this disc to ANY fan of classical music as well as fans of new age music. It really deserves 5 stars and I hope this disc receives the sales numbers that it truly deserves..
I have no idea how my friend at work discovered this CD, but I sure am glad he did.

5 out of 5 stars EBQ Takes the Listener to the Next Passage.......2000-12-07

I have owned this album for five years now and I never grow tired of it. The music is in turns solemn, majestic, soothing, grandiose and intimate. In the liner notes EBQ trumpeter Rolf Smedvig says, "This represents our latest effort exploring, with new arrangements, the music of the modal system. Modal music is based on scales which dominated European music for 1,100 years, from approximately 400 to 1500 and strongly influenced composers for another one hundred years."

In addition to the members of the EBQ, guest musicians are incorporated into the music on guitar, fretless bass, synthesizer, percussion and wordless vocals.

What I love about this music is its ability to transport the listener to another palce and time. Smedvig summed it up best in the liner notes when he concluded," The music is timeless. The old becomes new, the new old. Melodies never end, they only lead to the next passage..." Beautiful music indeed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect........1999-07-02

This is a wonderful album, which I can't recommend strongly enough. On this disc, Empire Brass succeeds brilliantly in melding the passion and splendor of early music with the eclectic trickery of modern world-music percussion. The arrangements are intricate & delicate, yet powerful, and the sound is pristine. Think of it as the Roman Empire making a techno jazz album. I even used it at my wedding. Fans of acid/techno jazz, world music and brass should not miss this amazing disc.

      Album Description

With the unprecedented interest in Australian Aboriginal culture and art, the ancient Northern Australian wind instrument - the didjeridu - has experienced an astonishing popularity and ever growing interest in the West. Whether it's the sought-after sounds and rhythms akin to nature or the varied interest in Aboriginal culture, the didjeridu speaks with an unforgettable primordial voice to all who hear it. With the vast array of intricate rhythms and otherworldly tone colors, the elaborate improvisations that result strike a deeply buried chord in the mysteries of creation which seems to resonate at the core of humankind.

Produced by longtime collaborator and producer Steve Roach, The Art of the Didjeridu: Selected Pieces 1987-1997 is a collection of timeless pieces spanning a decade in David Hudson's professional career. It features deeply rooted and rich Aboriginal traditions as well as innovative contemporary styles and compositions. The priceless contribution Hudson has made to the art of the didjeridu is the infinite musically creative possibilities of a traditionally one note ancient instrument.

David Hudson is the foremost didjeridu player in Australia (and the world). He is of the Tjapukai tribe in Kuranda, North Queensland. "The Art of the Didjeridu" is a compilation taken from "Woolunda"(Jowelbinna, Frog Dreaming, Roo, Aircave),"Rainbow Serpent"(Bali Doo,Message Stick, Undara's Lava Tube), and "Gunyal"(Split Rock),plus tracks from his other collaborations. David Hudson also played the didjeridu solo for the "Survivor:Outback" theme and toured/recorded with Yanni on his "Tribute" album.

Hudson's connection with the didjeridu is phenomenal. He demonstrates total control and respect, makes it sing, cry, laugh, croak, become the hop of a kangaroo, the mocking cry of the kookaburra, the soft drone of nocturnal insects, guttural screams. It sounds even better with a pair of great speakers as the stereo really brings out the different channels and moods.

The didjeridu is a hollowed-out branch, traditionally one that had been eaten by termites. It was played exclusively by men of various Arnhemland (Australian Aboriginal) tribes and used in secret ceremonies and songs. In the modern world it has been exploited by "New Age" music, and sadly the only examples of didjeridu music that people often hear may not be authentic. The same applies for the didjeridus themselves that are sold in Australia and around the world. This is not true with the music of David Hudson.

I have made two dijeridus and have been listening to didj music for over twelve years, but Hudson remains the greatest. His music is sometimes more experimental than traditional, but he uses the didj as a tool to get in touch with his tribal past and to divine the sonic future. The music yields new discoveries and spiritual awakenings with every listen; it is entrancing and hypnotic, an excellent aid for meditation and reflection.

Yothu Yindi is another talented band from Arnhemland that uses the didjeridu in their music, part of which is sung in Yolngu. The Australian Aborigines possess a vibrant culture, religion, and music, and were traditionally close to the land. Poverty, alcoholism, racism and unfair treaties have stripped them of land and some of their dignity, but their music and culture still shines brightly thanks to efforts by artists like David Hudson and Yothu Yindi.

Hear for yourself the mystical sound of an instrument that is thousands of years old played by a true didjeridu master. This is an excellent album that all world music fans should own, as much for the quality of the music if not the cultural significance.

      5 out of 5 stars Hudson's best!.......2000-11-18

This THE David Hudson CD to get. A fine collection of his best work from the WOOLUNDA,RAINBOW SERPENT, and GUNYAL album, plus tracks from his other collaborations.

Few can play the didj like Hudson. He sounds dynamic, uplifting, and downright CREEPY,all at the same time.

I wish I could play like him.
