Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Jess Klein has a few things going for her that might help her emerge from the glut of young, female singer-songwriters flooding an already saturated market. For one, her little-girl voice has an engaging edge to it, much like Julie Miller or Stevie Nicks; for another, her record sports a real band sound that rocks harder than your typical folkie fare. On the down side, she may sound a bit too much like the aforementioned singers to carve out her own recognizable place. Then there are her tunes, dealing with the usual fare of love and loss, minus the powerful melding of lyrics and melody that have made Nicks a superstar and Miller a rising one. Unfortunately, songs such as "I Tried," "I'll Be Alright," and "Love Is Where You Find It" reveal nothing deeper than the clichés of their titles. Only "Ireland" escapes the vagueness that plagues the others, a vagueness that neither Klein's vocal talents nor her muscular band can focus. --Michael Ross

This CD is great for an emotional girl's nite in. Listening to Jess makes you feel like your with a friend. You just need to listen.

Wonderfully eclectic; NOT the typical female-songwriter.......2002-06-20

Imagine a female songwriter with a beautiful voice who sings songs that are NOT insipid and tedious, whose music has a touch of the traditional, and who is sincere enough that you'd want to sing her songs to someone you love, or listen to them frequently when alone. Work that comes without pretense of simplicity or depth, and thus achieves both. This describes Jess Klein's _Draw Them Near_, with some ommissions; her work has not yet acquired the cookie-cutter hollywood gloss--which means it's more raw, and certainly more genuine for the lack. For this price, the CD's a better bargain than any you've bought in the last few years. I do urge giving it a try.

Too generic sounding........2001-12-14

I agree with Michael Ross, the Amazon.com reviewer, specifically the part where he says that "songs such as 'I Tried,' 'I'll Be Alright,' and 'Love Is Where You Find It' reveal nothing deeper than the clichés of their titles." Very cliche', very generic sounding; a girl with a nice voice goes into the studio to record a very studio-sounding CD with studio musicians. Bleh. At first I was attracted to it because she does have a pretty voice (it kind of reminds me of Suzannah Hoffs from The Bangles--that's who I thought I was listening to at first), but alas, that's all that's there--a pretty voice. This album is great if you like pretty little songs with no depth to them. If you want to listen to something more meaningful than that, look elsewhere.

The airwaves seem to be full of female singer songwriters. You name the music from toddler pop to gangsa rap and women are finally getting the chance to show the world what they can do. And mostly what they can do is put out the same tired self absorbed junk that their male counterparts have been feeding us for decades now. And then there is Jess. Sweet voice, but with an edge that cuts into you. Lyrics that reveal, hide, allow the voice to play in the music. And thankfully some songs that are just fun, raw little tunes that are not meant to change the world or let us all know that she is a deep thinker who wants to save the world. Jess Klein doesn't take us or herself too seriously and I love her and her songs for that. Some music just makes you smile and smiling is good enough for me.

Jess Klein is great live in an intimate venue like CSPS in Cedar Rapids. I've seen her twice there and this New Yorker/now Bostonian is maturing into her own sophisticated, varied brand of music. Draw Them Near is a great little listen.

too gorgeous for words.......2004-11-10

In the world of "historically informed" performance, this is a gem. The ensemble shapes phrases beautifully and the singing of Matthew White is lush. This quickly became one of my favorite recordings.

Been there, heard it..........2003-05-07

I own the magificent recording by Ian Bosteridge of Cantata 82. No doubt this record company was hoping to capitalize on the popularity of Bosteridge's disc or the discs of other countertenors who have already recorded these cantatas with greater sensitivity and success (Scholl, for example). Matthew White does not measure up to the current standard of countertenor and this disc disappoints. His voice lacks a variety of vocal colours and he pushes, almost muscles his way through some of the beautiful German laments with little awareness of the emotional power of this music. It does not help that he is supported by a thin and directionless chamber ensemble.

This is an awesome CD. It does what it sets out to do - Draw you into the presence of God. This CD is already one of my favorites. I just got this CD off of Ebay some months ago and I'm not disappointed at all. This is true praise and worship. This is classic of the early Hosanna days. I'm glad on most of their CDs they are still sticking to what worked and is still working. You will not be disappointed with this one at all. Go for it!

Great Album.......2005-08-22

DRAW NEAR is a great Christian album. Among Thorn's is a great rock/pop band that combines fast-paced rock/pop songs with slower worship songs. My favorites are "We Run To You" and "I Could Not Love You More." But all the songs are good. Other highlights are "I Can't Deny" and "The Heavens Declare."

The cd has 13 tracks and a running time of 1:08:55.
