Rock & roll is constantly splintering into multiple personalities. Big radio players layer thick slabs of studio shine on their albums, while back-to-the-basics rockers keep the sound so raw it rubs calluses on your ears. The White Stripes fall in the latter category. The duo strips down to the fundamentals of Meg White's simple drumbeat and Jack White's garagy guitar and pleading vocals. While the elements are sparse, the Detroit act create a noisy, hip-grinding batch of punk R&B, displayed again on White Blood Cells, the Stripes' third full-length. While it's hard to pick favorites from such talent, this band only gets better with time. White's vocals were sounding like a young Robert Plant on De Stijl--definitely not a bad thing--but on Cells, he's developed his own persona. He throws musical fits on "Fell in Love with a Girl," gets almost loungy on the piano number "This Protector," and keeps the blues vibe running on "Now Mary." The album is so rich with basic variations on a simple theme it's hard to believe such soulful energy comes from just two people. White Blood Cells is an amazing piece of work, a benchmark that ought to inspire new legions of garage rockers for years to come. --Jennifer Maerz

White Blood Cells by The White Stripes is a mixed bag of good and songs that go absolutely nowhere. Jack White's voice is quite engaging, it pulls you in to what he is singing about but certain songs like I Smell a Rat and Protector are just a waste of time. Songs I do enjoy include: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Hotel Yorba, Fell in Love with a Girl, We are Going to be Friends, Offend in Every Way, and I'm Finding it Harder to be a Gentleman. I can see why people like this band, they have some great, short songs but maybe next time they should think about having an album with lesser songs, too much filler. You will either really love or loathe this album, the choice is yours. Good luck!

What is this..........2007-07-01

Why do I keep falling for these fly by night one hit wonders. I kept the Elephant albumn only because it had Seven Nation Army.

This albumn only has 1 good song "Fell in love with a girl" which lasts less than 2 minutes. Then the rest of the albumn is full of meandering filler that all sounds like the same 3 guitar chords, the same screaming and the same repetative drum line.

This band spits out a albumn like every 6 months...They would fare much better if they placed all their good songs together and only released 1 album every 2 or 3 years.

This cd will certainly be headed to the Used CD store...if they already do not have too many copies.

As a baby boomer growing up with all the 60's and 70's legends, I figured after early retirement I'd get back into music and search for bands that are still rocking. After buying and listening to a bunch of cds recommended by Amazon I have to say this is one of my favorites. It has components of classic rock with their own unique and excellent style. It's good sober or with a pretty good buzz, which is a true compliment. Rock on Stripes.

(3.5 stars) ...but don't call Jack White a genius!.......2007-04-07

I don't see why modern rock critics worship the White Stripes. I mean, I like their music, but calling them brilliant is like calling ZZ Top innovative - both are good bands, but both are also just playing an age-old style and not moving it forward in any way. Jack White himself is a PRETTY GOOD songwriter, a DECENT guitarist, and an AWFUL singer. These don't add up to genius.
That said, I like this band. Just not as much as mainstream critics want me to. Plenty of cool songs, like Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell in Love with a Girl, Hotel Yorba, Finding it Harder to Be a Gentlemen, We're Gonna Be Friends, The Same Boy You've Always Known and Now Mary. So you take these, you merge them with the highlights from Elephant, and you've got an awesome disc on your hands. Too bad there's too much filler here, most of it generic garage-punk like I Think I Smell a Rat, Offend in Every Way, Expecting, The Union Forever and This Protector. And you can forget about experimentation, really, other than the acoustic tracks Hotel Yorba and We're Gonna Be Friends. Considering how much (read: zero) experimentation most mainstream bands do today, perhaps that's why Mr. White gets slobbered all over. Drummer Meg White kinda takes a backseat, but she can really drum when she feels like it.
I think The White Stripes are gonna get it together one day and make an awesome masterpiece of garage-punk. But I also think that's gonna be five years or so in the future. As of now, we've got White Blood Cells, Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan, three fine records by a good but slightly overrated group.

If your new to White Sripes, this a good one for you. Not a bad song on the album.

First off, this isn't an apology to Brian, because you don't deserve it, you ignorant A-hole.

The Peppers have their own sound, but it's too bad they suck. THe band (besides Anthony) are very talented, but the playing just don't go together very well. I like 311 better because they play funk better, they don't seem to try to force everything, everything just goes together so well, their synergy is just great.

Red Hot Chili Peppers suffer because they just don't seem to fit together. No doubt the whole band is very talented, but they go together, they just dont' seem to blend as well. Anthony is a cheesy vocalist. The lyrics on here are mostly on the same topic, sex and drugs, which gets old after a while. He can't sing either. His later lyrics cleary were a step up from the pointless lyrics he does during this time.

Basically, I dont like their sound, although the bass is something to check out. It's not worth it to me, I find nothing special about this band, although I give them points for talent and originality.

a mix of old and new.......2007-06-16

What I like best about this album is that you get a peak of their past funk style and their jump over the threshold into rock. It has every element of their many layered canvas. No band is more honest or true to themselves as this band. Although 'Under the Bridge' became their signature song at the time, it pays to listen to every song before this classic. Anything after Naked in the Rain, which follows UTB is a bit more graphic and may need to be monitored for younger audiences. My favorite is the funky rock tune, Righteous and the Wicked which proceeds immediately to the best version (studio versus live) of 'Give it Away'. You will not be sorry. Any new RHCP fan must appreciate their past to love their present.

A "Hybrid Theory" original!.......2007-07-25

Famously blending Big Band, Blues, and Rock, 9 of the 13 tracks feature David Clayton-Thomas at his best, which is really the only BST most of us are interested in. If you've ever heard "Spinning Wheel" on the radio and liked it, you're in for a real treat - it's what you hoped for. I'm only sorry there isn't more!

I love the bands early hits from the first two albums: Child is father to the Man (1st album) and Blood Sweat and Tears (2nd album). All the tracks on this compilation are from the first 5 albums, however, I think only the really good hits are really from the 1st two albums, and like another reviewer said, THESE ARE NOT THE FULL LENGTH SONGS! The CD is only flippin' 48 minutes for crying out loud! They could of at least put the real versions on it to fill it up, or put on more songs. I don't understand compilations like this. So if your looking where to start collecting from this jazz/rock/psychedelic/blues based band, start with the first two albums, you'll be a heck of a lot happier.

This is an excellent sounding reissue of a classic LP and this CD is worth buying for either diehards or the casual fans: The original LP is all mono using the 45 versions, and while there were very early CDs that used the LP master, Romanian English Audio PhraseBook electronic translator ECTACO PB-Rm B-3

Inevitably, when critics praise a new Dylan album, they label it the "best since Blood on the Tracks," and with good reason. Inspired by a crumbled marriage, and recorded after a tour with The Band had apparently re-ignited his creativity, Blood is among Dylan's masterpieces. The album's epic songs are well known, but its real high points are the shorter numbers--"You're a Big Girl Now," the flawless blues "Meet Me in the Morning," and the sweetly devastating "Buckets of Rain." "Shelter from the storm" winter, spring, summer, and fall!.......2007-07-07

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

I recall early 1975 as if it were yesterday. Progressive Rock radio led by WNEW-FM in New York City was alive and well. The moment Columbia Records dropped off "Blood On The Tracks" the grooves would be worn out long before its time.

Critics of Dylan were muzzled after experiencing the ten tracks. The group that loved to say he was a man from the sixties now a fish out of water, ate their own words a plethora of times. On another side of the fence were those that didn't like Dylan. After "Tangled Up In Blue" became entrenched in their minds they couldn't help come up with the five bucks for the LP.

A record full of masterpieces doesn't necessarily grab your attention the first time. It may need several spins before you comprehend the message. That wasn't the case with "Blood On The Tracks." Do you recall the initial listening to "Idiot Wind" with Dylan's phrasing of the word idiot? It was authoritative, haunting, and brilliant, and that was only verse one. "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" didn't simply command your attention, it put you in the role. You seemed glued in your tracks, unable to move until the final notes were played. "Shelter From The Storm" and "Buckets Of Rain" were a marvelous combination of tracks from the genius of Bob to end one of his most important records ever.

If you never experienced this on CD or need a better pressing than the oldest version, it sound magnificent as she gives you shelter from the storm.

For those that thought this may be hard to parallel even by Dylan, "Desire" took care of any self-doubt!

Blood on the Tracks stands with the best of Bob Dylan the best of American music. This is latter day saint Dylan Bob after poet for the masses Bob after RnR hero Bob pre- country crooner Bob 70's comeback as wished by Elvis.
This 5.1 recording stands fine up against the other 5.1 re-mixes of "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Blond on Blond".
The guitars are sharp, clear and in your ear. The vocals whisper when they want and shout when they should.
This is as good as it gets.......

Stripped Naked.......2007-01-29

Dylan never wrote a better album than this. His most personal and introspective work; the emotional fragility and brutal honesty of these tracks showcase a facet of Dylan's music that is too often overshadowed by his reputation as a 60s "protest" singer. Heartbreak and rejection as the human condition are squarely on display, and should appeal to anyone who has ever loved, lost, and lived on hoping to find love again.

Mature Masterpiece.......2007-01-16

Dylan scored big on 'Blood on the Tracks,' perhaps the first of many comebacks. The subject matter of love gone wrong has been taken elsewhere, especially with his wild, majestic 'Blonde on Blonde,' but 'Blood on the Tracks' finds him in fine folk form, able to draw more from experience and quiet passion. The known songs are all great, including the mesmerizing hit "Tangled up in Blue," the excellent and hypnotic "Simple Twist of Fate," and the pensive "Shelter from the Storm". Less heralded are other great songs, like, arguably the album's best, "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts". Complete with a fine story and a rollicking accompaniment, "...the Jack of Hearts" comes up with aces musically and lyrically. Quieter moments are highlighted with the beautiful serenade of "You're a Big Girl Now," which only reminds one in style of another classic "Just Like a Woman". There's also the acoustic ballad excellence of "If You See Her, Say Hello," which is written like a letter to his lover's successor. Still, there are moments when qualified brilliance is present. "Idiot Wind" seems to gather more pungency from the delivery than the lyrical development. "Buckets of Rain," which ends the album caps off his folk excellence. According to his memoir autobiography, 'Chronicles, Vol. I, Dylan wrote that he, to paraphrase, sabotoged his career to escape becoming a messiah. In the liner notes, he is defined as a "troubadour". Indeed, he truly found himself again on 'Blood on the Tracks'. Too bad he had to find love gone sour to find his true footing once again.

Electronics t much to take issue with on Blood on the Tracks; it's subtle but solid from start to finish. (Just as an aside, I never realized how much Bob sounds like a cross between Lou Reed and Ian Hunter at times.)

An Open Diary, One of the Great Albums .......2007-03-06

Written with a broken heart, an album that can make a grown man weep. One of Dylan's great efforts, arguably the best album of the '70s. If only he could sing :). As with a lot of Dylan's songs, the instrumental track grabs you and it's a bit of a let down when the familiar nasal voice enters the proceedings, but you're soon swept up in the sheer brilliance of the lyric and phrasing. You can listen to this album a thousand times and never get tired of it. One of the big 5 Dylan albums, along w/ Freewheelin', Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 and Bringing it All Back Home. My personal favorite, and I'm in the minority on this, is Bringing it All Back Home, which is IMHO the greatest album ever made in the rock/pop genre. Dylan changed music forever when he did his Ben Franklin imitation and discovered electricity. Before that he only introduced a theme song for a generation (Blowin' in the Wind) and the most powerful song of the '60s (A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall). Rock music grew up with Dylan. He broke all kinds of barriers (the length of songs, fused various genres and brought intelligence to lyrics). The Beatles could no longer sing She Loves You Ya ya ya after Dylan raised the bar. Jerry Garcia: No Dylan, no Dead. Check it out and you'll discover what I did: that the Jewish kid from Minnesota has the goods!

Album Description

For gold-selling Memphis turbo-rockers Saliva, the past couple years of their decade-long career have brought an ocean swell of change. One or more members have had children, stopped drinking, ended longterm relationships, gotten married and/or left the group, and each instance has been accompanied by a new sense of clarity.

As a result, Saliva's fifth album Blood Stained Love Story resounds with a previously untapped level of passion, energy, sincerity and diversity, not to mention an undeniable melodicism that will endear the band to anyone that feels any sort of connection between reality and music.

"I think we've all been through a blood stained love story of one type or another," says frontman Josey Scott. "It's kind of a metaphor for how things can be a certain way for so long, and then within a day, they just change and you're on this whole other path."

Blood Stained Love Story is an album of growth, a realization that there are more important things in life than cover stories, photo shoots and big Hollywood parties. But while it may be more mature than Saliva's past efforts, it's no less turbulent.

Recent discover of an instant classic.......2007-05-20

Every once in a while, a band releases a CD that is great from beginning to end. Saliva did that with "Blood Stained Love Story". Although my first experience with this band is on this CD alone, and I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing their previous works, I am looking forward to enjoying their other efforts as well. I am not one of these people who expect a band to have a similar sound throughout their careers, to me that shows no artistic venture. So, when any band releases a new CD, I enjoy it for the fact that it is a new production. Whatever it is that they (Saliva) have done in the past will be enjoyed as the separate works of art they have produced for my listening pleasure. "Blood Stained Love Story" is a great introduction to Saliva's music for me, and I look forward to their future works as well.

Saliva is back with a decent album.......2007-05-01

Two and a half years since thier last album (and worst) the boys from Memphis are back with a decent album. Better than their "Survival of the Sickest" (3 stars) but not as good as "Every 6 Seconds" or "Back into Your System" (both 4.5 stars). The main reason, to me anyway, is the growing amount of slower songs the groups puts out. Shorter than their other albums with only 10 songs, 1 is almost a classic, 1 I skip, 5 are good and the other 3 are ok. While it's a decent album and a good one for their fans, I prefer their earlier work more.

Saliva flirts with power ballads and mainstream rock.......2007-04-26

THE DISC: (2007) 10 tracks clocking in at approximately 40 minutes. Included with the disc is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits, song lyrics, one band photo and thank you's. All songs written by Saliva and producer Bob Marlette. Recorded at The Blue Room in Woodland Hills, CA. Label - Island Records.

COMMENTS: A lot has happened since this band formed in '96 in Memphis, TN. From a nice beginning in the alternative/nu-metal/post-grunge category in the late 90's, to a more calm and slick, well produced rock album in 2007. Saliva no longer belongs with the nu-metal acts like Korn, P.O.D., Mudvayne, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park. Instead, they can join the likes of Nickelback, Creed, Puddle Of Mudd, Buckcherry and Staind. Not necessarily a bad thing - just depends on your individual tastes. Fans that heralded their older albums as their best material will no doubt cry SELL OUT on "Blood Stained Love Story". I, for one, was not a huge fan of their first (major) album, "Every Six Seconds" (2001). I've never been a nu-metal fan, so most of this disc went right by me. Definitely impressed with this album. It farkin' rocks. Much better than Advance and Vanquish imo and that album rocked too. It sounds a little more thrashy than their first album and maybe a little less of the high pitch singing, but still plenty of it. Love it!

3 Inches is a little short of the real amount of blood this one holds!!.......2007-07-04

wow 3 inches of blood have literally turned the page on their music. People like traditional metal, you can come up with anything and even if its the same thing we love banging our heads to it. 3 inches on their last album stayed too focused on a style that many still like but has not quite grown to our generation. these are awsome screwed up canadian guys that i met in montreal...they are nice....and its good too know that there not just some wannabe punks wen u listen to their music!!!!!!

This album is unbelievable.......2007-06-30

I didn't think they would be able to top Advance and Vanquish.... but they did. A&V was probably one of the best metal albums of all time.... THIS IS THE GREATEST!!!!!! I have pretty much stopped listening to other bands since this album came out. I used to love Maiden / Priest etc.... I don't even bother with them anymore. This is truly all I need.

DAMN!!!.......2007-06-28

This is probably one of the best albums ive heard in a while(after Horse The Bands "A Natural Death"). I saw 3 Inches live last year and i thought their music at the time could not be out done but for once i was wrong and im happy for that, because this album went above and beyond any of my expectations. I talked to the lead singers and they said it was due summer of 07 and anxiously i waited and once i got it it was well worth the wait. And on top of it they added akeyboardist to the mix... f***king awesome.

Awesome album! Very well produced and the band plays to their strength's. I picked this band a couple years ago to hit it big and i was right. A mix of thrash, death, hardcore and power metal.

Wrong Manual / Complicated ElectronicTool.......2007-05-08

I found this translator to be too complicated to setup, especially since the manual was not for it specifically. Would send back if could, but the 7 day return period was not enough time for me to figure it out before leaving on my trip to 'old' Mexico. Now I have a translator I cannot figure out and cannot return. Do not recommend Unless you are a computer Guru/Nerd/Geek, etc. Very Disappointed!

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!
