Customer Reviews:
Scottish fantasies at their best .......2006-11-15
This double CD is a real treasure, and a showcase of both the musicianship and scholarship. Rachel Barton Pine has researched both the composers and the history of the performances of the works she has recorded. She has produced the most attractive booklet which goes with the CDs, in which she teaches the subject in an effective, friendly and captivating way. Particularly interesting is her documentation of Sarasate's familiarity with Scottish fiddling. Rachel Barton Pine has also a very attractive and informative web site on which one can find information about this project. Just "Google" her and her site comes right up. I think that her web site is great. One can find the schedule of her concerts and all sorts of interesting educational things. I only wish that all great performers would do the same.
Rachel Barton Pine is a virtuoso, but her musicianship shines and it makes her virtuosity just a tool. She is so much more than the flying fingers. In a winning combination with Maestro Alexander Platt, an immensely talented conductor, they have produced a classic which will be listened to for years to come. There may never be a comparable Scottish Fantasy and Pibroch Suite performance. Mr. Platt leaves no note unexpressed. As opposed to the lesser conductors, who sometimes overpower the soloist, or who seek their own limelight at the expense of the soloist, Mr. Platt achieves a perfect union of the soloist and the orchestra, just as it should be. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is also at its best.
These records' main value is in the interpretation, which is insightful and elegant. There are no over-interpretations, however, in which the soloist or orchestra would push their own detailed view of this music. Instead, certain dreaminess is allowed, and the listeners can build their own Scottish Fantasies and become active participants in this music.
Sarasate's Airs écossaise is a totally charming piece. The Medley of Scots Tunes, by Rachel Barton Pine and Alasdair Fraser, a master Scottish fiddler, is an event. I admit to listening to it consecutively eight times, and would have listened to it more times, but was afraid of a total addiction.
The great art of fiddling, the artists' dreams about their countries of origin, pictures of beautiful Scotland, and the musical finesse and musicianship are all the impressions you will come out with after listening to these great recordings.
This review is dedicated to Dr. Andrew B. Dempster for his birthday. Andrew has shown me his native country, Scotland, and guided me through its history. I came back with wonderful memories, and a book of music sheets on Scottish fiddling, my most precious music sheets ever.
really, really good.......2005-06-30
A very pleasant, often lively, evocative and enjoyable set of CDs. The video documentary included in the second CD tells about how Barton Pine studied Celtic/Scottish music before making her recording, and the extra work shows in her ability to render the Bruch as a far lovelier recording than any other violinst has. She finds the tensions, the delicacies and the warmth of this piece. Add to that, the Sarasate is also beautifully done -- sorry it was so short a piece. On the second CD, the Mackenzie and the McEwen, not heard that often, are also really well done. This isn't fiddling -- you get true classical versions of the folk tunes hidden in these selections. Because of that, Barton Pine brings out nuances that were never before explored, and she does it by showing you just how good, how rich, this music can be. The final piece, Barton Pine's arrangement of scottish tunes, is also enjoyable --a fun way to end an album that is both relaxing and delightful. Highly recommended.

Swinging, sassy, mellow jazz.......2000-05-12
As an admirer of great jazz and after reading online about this album and its performer, I had to add it to my music collection. I'm glad I did.
Steve Blackwood, known for his role on "Days of Our Lives", is a jazz singer of the highest order. With an acrobatic tenor voice, he scats with ease, croons with care, and swings with style. Backed by a jazz combo (pointing out excellent work by pianist Jane Getz and trumpeter Jeff Kaye), the arrangements are simple, yet unique to the song interpretations.
My personal favorites include "Black Coffee" which gets very soulful and moody, "Stompin' At the Savoy" which makes you want to swing dance, a slightly different arrangement of Peggy Lee's "Fever" that at the same time pays homage to that great lady and showcases a more sassy side to Mr. Blackwood, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" gets low down and "Just In Time" which runs vibrantly rampant.
This album has originality, pure talent from its singer and his musicians, and you can tell that Mr. Blackwood has a great respect for this style of music and for the singers who paved the way.

Good album but it only has 10 songs and I think there should be several more songs on an album with a title like "volume one".

Wow is all you can say about this. A country giant meets a gospel institution & it works quite well! You go from traditional (There's A Higher Power) to true country gospel (Hank Williams' "A House of Gold"). Fans of both Wagoner & the Blackwood Bro's will find much to treasure on this set. This is country gospel at it's best. The only complaint is I feel BMG could've combined both volumes on one CD at a minimum cost. Otherwise, this is great-right down to original artwork and liner notes! A must have!

Album Description
The first orchestral recording that Cedille produced, this CD makes musical history on two counts by offering the premiere recording of American composer Easley Blackwood's sumptuous new Fifth Symphony and the first-ever reissue of the landmark recording of his celebrated and strikingly original First Symphony. Blackwood's Symphony No. 1, Op. 3, was recorded by Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for RCA Victor in 1958 and released in 1959. Long out of print, the "Living Stereo" LP has become a prized collectors item. Cedille's reissue was digitally remastered from RCA's original stereo master tape, now part of BMG Classics' archives. The First Symphony's premiere performances brought Blackwood praise as "a stoutly original musical thinker" (Time, November 24, 1958). Howard Taubman of The New York Times called him "a composer of uncommon gifts." High Fidelity reviewer Alfred Frankenstein (February 1960) wrote of being captivated by "its freshness, its vitality, its dramatic, epical qualities, and the sense of a lively, original, uncompromising talent at work." Eric Salzman, reviewing the recording for The New York Times (Jan 31, 1960), called the work a "wild, grandiose and eclectic work full of almost Lisztian gestures . . . this young composer wants his symphony to embrace and reconcile a whole world of varying musical materials." Blackwood's Symphony No. 5, Op. 34, also reflects this abiding interest in a wide variety of musical styles, as well as Blackwood's latter-day interest in tonal music and older harmonic idioms. Around the time Blackwood sat down to write the Fifth Symphony, he had become enamored of piano works by lesser-known modernists of the early 1900s. "I originally conceived the work as the kind of symphony Sibelius might have written had he experimented with the modernist techniques that attracted composers like Casella and Szymanowski," Blackwood writes in the CD booklet. The Fifth Symphony, completed in 1990, was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its centennial. Cedille's recording is derived from the 1992 premiere concerts given by the CSO and conductor James DePreist. Chicago Sun-Times critic Wynne Delacoma (May 22, 1992) heard "fingerprints of Sibelius and other late-Romantic era composers" in the symphony's "spacious sweep and serene, unhurried melodies with hints of pastoral or folk elements." Delacoma called the symphony "a well-crafted, graceful work" that achieved Blackwood's twin goals of writing a work that orchestras enjoy playing and audiences enjoy hearing.
Customer Reviews:
Great American Symphonies!.......2000-07-30
Easley Blackwood's Symphony No. 1 was composed on commission in 1955 and originally released on an RCA Victor Red Seal LP. This highly sought-after collectible has been out of print for four decades. That performance, by Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra is reissued here, in stunningly beautiful sound (those RCA Red Seal engineers were no slouches), and expertly remastered. The symphony itself is angular and polytonal, with sly quotations from Ives and Messiaen (with whom Blackwood once studied). It sounds less jarringly modern today than it did in the late 1950's, but it is no less exquisite a piece of modern American music. Blackwood's Symphony No. 5 (presented first on the CD) was composed and recorded in the early 1990's and is much more conservative in style. The composer's stated intention was to compose "the way Sibelius might have had he experimented with modernism". Blackwood succeeds brilliantly. These works are absolutely essential.
