'Bridge Across Forever' is a new collection of epics that is sure to enthrall fans once again. TransAtlantic has again enabled Stolt, Morse, Trewavas and Portnoy to indulge a brand of song writing, totally uninhibited or restricted to any particular style or length, something which they have really taken advantage of with the opener 'Duel With The Devil' and 'Stranger In Your Soul' both clocking in at just under 1/2 hour each! A Radiant Records release.

5 out of 5 stars Harks back to classic days of yore.......2007-03-12

I can't think of a CD I've purchased within the past decade I took a more immediate liking to than this effort. If you like "Foxtrot" or "Nursery Cryme" then you will like this CD as well. There's ample use of Tony Banks-style Hammond -- but with classic Moog and Oberheim patches more predominant than in very early Genesis, and occasional heavier riffs evocative of Spock's Beard or Dream Theater, this CD has a voice of it's own. And what a great voice it is! Catchy melodies and weaving textures that you will find hard to get out of your head.

Now let me attempt to dispel a few prog misconceptions I continue to run across in reviews that may be applied to the music on this CD:

1. Prog rock is pretentious, overblown; Rick Wakeman wears a cape - Hey, that's the genre! If the music and production didn't have a grand scope and sweeping grandeur enveloping it, it wouldn't be prog, now would it? I'm reminded of Mozart's critics in "Amadeus" who generally liked the work, except there were "too many notes." If you don't like long interwoven suites, fully orchestrated sections mixed with a variety of musical textures and lyrics more ethereal than "driving your Chevy to the levee," then don't call yourself an aficionado of the genre while declaiming it as pretentious. Rather, just admit you don't like prog rock. And Rick Wakeman only wore the cape in concert and put on one helluva great show. It was the 70s. Big name rockers wore garments a lot stranger than a cape! I can't figure out all the Wakeman-bashing going on out there.

2. New prog rock bands like Transatlantic and Spock's Beard are derivative - To a degree, yes. You can tell these guys probably wore the grooves out on their early Genesis albums. And you'll find passages evocative of Crimson and Gentle Giant thrown in for good measure. Is that a problem? Again, if the sound were totally foreign when compared to classic prog music then it would have to fit into another genre. "Bridge Across Forever" does an excellent job of blending what was great about 70s prog with their own unique vision and songwriting skills, and I think it compares very favorably to some 70s prog greats. If I had 100 CDs as good as "Foxtrot" or "Nursery Cryme" I'd be thrilled, rather than steamed that the latter was "too derivative."

3. Neal Morse's voice is too nasal, his lyrics are insipid - I don't find that to be the case. I like his voice. As to lyrics, if anyone who likes early Yes music claims Neal Morse's lyrics are insipid, then please explain the lyrics of "Starship Trooper" to me. Or anything off of "Tales From Topographic Oceans." Don't misunderstand me, I love those albums -- "The Yes Album" still stands as one of the greatest 40 minutes of music ever assembled, in my opinion -- but part of the mystique of the prog genre is that you're more likely to run across lyrics describing a Giant Hogweed gone rampant in downtown London as opposed to "good lovin' gone bad." If you don't care for the fantastical in lyrical content then once again I submit you just don't like the genre.

Sorry for the ranting. I'll likely pick up many "not helpfuls" for going off-topic entirely too often, although I think my comments apply to the CD I'm reviewing as well. If you're still unsure about purchasing this CD, reread the first paragraph -- it really says it all.

5 out of 5 stars Another incredible prog album from the supergroup!.......2006-12-20

Bridge Across Forever was prog-supergroup Transatlantic's 2nd (and sadly final) album. Featuring Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt, and Pete Trewavas, the band is a veritable who's-who of modern prog. Their first album was an incredible effort, although all but one of the songs was written mainly by Neal Morse, which some fans criticized as sounding too much like Spock's Beard (Morse's band). Thus, this second album was a more collaborative effort, and while SMPT:E (the first album) was amazing, this newfound cohesiveness shows on Bridge Across Forever. The album can almost be seen as one continuous piece of music split among it's four tracks, as sections are reprised or built upon between songs.

The album kicks off with Duel With the Devil, 27 minutes of magic going from section to section seamlessly. It segues into Suite Charlotte Pike, one of my favorite songs from this band. If the Beatles were a prog band, this is what they'd sound like, all 15 glorious minutes of it. After the short (5 minute) pretty title track, the album closes with another monster, 26 minute Stranger in Your Soul. Again, a mammoth composition flowing so seamlessly it seems as if it fell out of the sky fully formed. Truly amazing, as is this whole album.

Unfortunately, Neal Morse quit Spock's Beard and Transatlantic in 2002 to puruse a career as a Christian prog solo artist. Portnoy promptly broke up Transatlantic, as Morse was the driving force behind it, musically, and Mike couldn't fathom running the band without him.

If you are into Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, or Marillion, or just great prog, the two Transatlantic albums (and their two live ones) are essential. You totally won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Better.......2006-06-13

I put off buying this disc for months because sometimes you read reviews that are simply too gracious, and recordings of whale noises could be given a 5- star rating. This is deinitely not the case here. This recording is great from beginning to end and each song holds little gems that keep you coming back for more. You start to think, "Hm. This is interesting." And just when you think the song couldn't possibly surpass the last line, BAM, they hit you with something even more ingenious! "Duel With the Devil" is a great opening track which goes from quiet to powerful and back again (and again!) Reminiscent of Close to the Edge, not so much in its sound but in the way so many elements are brought together and work. "Suite Charlotte Pike," as has been said, is a schizophrenic, Beatles- sounding tune that is a light- hearted, happy affair, heralding back to Abbey Road. "Bridge Across Forever" is probably one of my favorite ballads, with surreal, heart- wrenching vocals and beautiful piano, strings and vocals by Neal Morse (aren't all his vocals great?) And then there's "Stranger In Your Soul" which is another great epic that has themes begun in the first track that blend here. To put it simply, this album caused me to purchase everything by The Flower Kings because of guitarist/ vocalist Roine Stolt's contributions here, and Spock's Beard due to Neal Morse's great vocals, keys and songwriting. I was already familiar with Mike Portnoy's awesome percussion and Pete Trewavas' bass playing by owning Dream Theater and Marillion CD's, but I feel their performances here were superior to the ones with their original bands (haven't heard bass riffs like this since early Yes Chris Squire!) This is one of the best albums I've heard in years and I don't say that lightly!

5 out of 5 stars Ages like a fine wine... .......2006-03-13

Music of this nature takes a lot of time to gel with my ears. At first this Transatlantic album didn't stand out for me, despite the fantastic rep it seems to carry.

With repeated listens and plenty of time to focus exclusively on the music, the initial fog of complexity has lifted revealing a brilliant beautifully orchestrated album I can not get enough of now. I'm not going to get into all the facets of musicianship and attention to the most minute musical details evident here on this disk... this sucker is just plain beautiful music. Listen to this w/ the lights off and in the company of someone special. It is worth every penny of it's admission price.

5 out of 5 stars Very unique music! One of my favorite side projects of all time!.......2006-02-22

This band would have to be one of the best "side project" groups I've ever heard! I heard SMPTe and now this....! The music they come up with together with this awesome group of 4 is just purely amazing! It's unique, original and they not afraid to express a comtemporary issues with their unique music form.

They should have stayed together, but of course Neal Morse had a special "religious experience" in Christianity.

Why people don't know more about these guys and this type of music is beyond me.

I was quite surprised how heavy Stranger in your Soul was! It would have to be one of their best songs they ever did along with All of the Above -- this song blew away when I heard a sample of it and then I did the noble thing and bought the album.

It might only have 4 songs -- but 2 of them are 26 minutes long!

I cried and felt a chill go down my spine (literally) when I listened to "A Bridge Across Forever."

I LOVE THEIR ART WORK ON THE FRONT COVER BECAUSE SCI-FI IS SUCH A GREAT THING! THAT SPACESHIP IS HUGE!!! ENORMOUS!!! There's inspiration there too; even in the art work!

There are many styles of music -- even a bit of saxophone in part 1. But still the same group as they were on SMPTe.

I read online that people criticized Neal for having too much of a dominance on the previous album (barf alert). I honestly feel that people complain too much. This album is great; like the previous. They explore themes that other music groups or genres won't even touch! These guys could talk about anything -- even a cook book and it would still be cool!

I've been blown away with this album. The husky voice of Neal, Roine Stolt's innovative guitar work, Mike Portnoy's neat drumming patterns and Pete's wonderful bass which appears to be the "backbone" of the music a lot.

I think anyone I MEAN ANYONE could listen to this album. There is something for everyone on here, except techno. So God bless these people!!! (No doof! doof! music here! :) )

The music is intelligent and very meaningful. The music is well balanced and they talk about things that effect people's life. This album appears to be a concept album and about a personal, psychological crisis. Each music instrument has it's part on this album and helps to provide the right "music mood" brillantly.

If you like prog rock and you love Portnoy in Dream Theater, you've got to add this to your collection.

This music is largely not heavy and is very moderate, but it's something that everyone can appreciate with the improved background vocals on this album.

3 out of 5 stars No that great..........2007-07-21

Bezali's flute playing is uninteresting if not boring at times. I really can't detect any greatness whatsoever. The accompaniment is mediocre as well, I should add. The sound quality of the recording is above average and the repertoire is interesting. All in all, it's not on my top list.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING: THE AWESOME LADY WITH THE GOLDEN FLUTE AND THE SPSO.......2007-02-14

Five HUGE Stars!! Virtuoso flautist Sharon Bezaly is one of the classical music world's true superstars as clearly demonstrated on this beautifully-recorded Hybrid SACD disc. If you haven't heard of this lady before, it's time to catch up to her wonderful art: blazing technique, a fleeting touch, burnished nuances, phenomenal breathing, and great respect for both the traditional and the new classical composers, all played on a specially-made 24-carat gold Muramatsu flute. How good is she? There are sections of this CD where you may not believe your ears!

The concept of "Bridge Across the Pynenees: Flute Concertos" is based on two concertos for flute from both sides of the Pynenees mountains which divide France and Spain: a flute concerto by Spain's Joaquin Rodrigo, a flute concerto by France's Jacques Ibert, and a fantasy by France's Francois Borne with Ms Bezaly beautifully complemented throughout by the wonderfully-inspired São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the redoubtable John Neschling. To begin with, we have Joaquin Rodrigo's lyrical but technically demanding "Concierto pastora" which was composed for legendary flautist James Galway. "Pieces De Resistance" are the 'call and response' between the flute and brass during the Allegro, and the magical flute, oboe & clarinet exchanges during the Adagio, plus the stunning flute soliloquys. You can hear the birds and insects.

François Borne's "Fantaisie brillante sur des airs de Carmen" is based on Bizet's opera. Arranged for flute and orchestra by Giancarlo Chiaramello, it is AWESOME, especially with Sharon's brilliant doubling and tripling of the Carmen theme in seamless, 'smoking' runs. For me, this add-on piece is the highest point of the CD displaying Sharon's complete technical and emotional package as a flautist, not to mention some incredible circular breathing, in one fell swoop of 11 minutes. It's a performance that lures me back, again and again.

Jacques Ibert's "Concerto for Flute and Orchestra" is multi-layered with a bravura performance by Sharon and the orchestra. Her steady tonal control, finger speed, and the ability of the golden flute to meet her demands in just phenomenal. The Allegro Scherzando is pure brilliance by orchestra and instrumentalist, with an unimpeded cascade of notes that is mesmerizing. All in all, a great performance by Ms Bezaly and the SPSO. The blazing performance of "Carmen" barely steals the show for me from two excellent concertos, especially the Ibert concerto. Stunning! My Highest Recommendation! Five BRILLIANT Stars!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite recordings.......2005-10-01

This recording is sublime!!! This is a compilation of Anne Sofie von Otter's favorite pieces. She chose such diverse and lovely music. Her diction is incredible. Her expressive voice moved me to tears in "A dio Roma," by Monteverdi. Her Handelian arias were also wonderful. My favorites from this CD are: all of the German lieder pieces, "A dio Roma" (Monteverdi), "Un sapin isole' se dresse" (Lahore), "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" (Weill), "In quali eccessi...Mi tradi" (Mozart), and "Non piu mesta" (Rossini). She is such an amazing Lyric Mezzo soprano. I love her so much. I also reccomend the Mass in C minor with Anne Sofie von Otter and Kiri te Kanawa, Cosi fan tutte with Renee Fleming (Mozart), and Ariodante (Handel). I strongly advise anyone to purchase this recording!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice, beautiful music.......2005-09-10

Superior quality recording! Gorgeous vocal production and sound. Terrific choice of material. Top of the line recording.

4 out of 5 stars Anne Sofie von Otter- The Artist's Album.......2005-08-06

Some of the songs are a little too obscure for me, but I like her singing. However, I like Renee Fleming's singing better.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic CD collection of arias!!.......2005-01-06

Anne Sofie Von Otter's mezzo voice is amazing!! Her selections of Handel's Ariodante and Rossini's La Cenerentola were amazing!! This CD is amazing and if you're a huge fan of Von Otter, you should get this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing versatility and unparalleled emotion.......2004-02-09

OK, so I own almost everything she's done. I am particularly fond of songs/lieder and, having listened to a great number of both male and female song singers, I can find no singer in the same universe. The intelligence of her approach, the control of her vocal color and vibrato to match the notes and lyrics, the playfulness with which she approaches the music are without equal.
This is an interesting disc and I didn't buy it until recently since I already had a lot of it and prefer songs to arias. But it was quite a revelation. The Handel and Weill are wonderful. For something completely different, try the Delage "Lahore" Track 12. Eerie and beautiful.
If Track #11, Skogen Sover, doesn't make you cry you have no heart. It may be the most beautiful use of the human voice I've ever heard. Listen carefully to the way she changes vowel sounds in the word 'juninatt' throwing in the 'n' both times so you barely hear it and it doesn't disrupt the vowel color change. At the end, turn up the volume and listen to her fade out with no vibrato until she's barely audible, then add just a touch of vibrato as she finishes with the final 't' of 'juninatt'.
There may be better aria singers, with some voices better for some types of opera. But this woman's incredible versatility is well-reflected here and a delight to listen to. Even a Rossini at the end, gynmastics and all. Has there ever been a singer with a wider repertoire matched with such gorgeous emotion? Now, if we could only get the UK version of this disc, with more and different offerings, here on Amazon USA...
A great intro to this powerful, emotional singer. Take it as a starter and buy the full discs that have the tracks you like best. You'll be captivated and not disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Tightly crafted with a visceral quality that is both intense and profound.......2005-10-25

Playing Time - 55:38 -- Somewhat like Tim O'Brien, mandolinist and singer Drew Emmitt has a contemporary style all his own. Unlike Tim who incorporates electric guitar, drums and percussion into his arrangements, Drew Emmitt prefers to keep his music fully acoustic. Drew is best known for his work with Leftover Salmon, a Colorado electric "jamgrass" band (actually their own genre moniker was "Cajun slamgrass") which broke up in 2004. Drew then assembled a band, The Drew Emmitt Band, which has returned to a more traditional sound. His musical compadres include some first class musicians -- Matt Flinner (banjo, mandoin, bouzouki), Greg Garrison (bass, harmony vocals), and Ross Martin (guitar). Guest artists appearing on this CD include Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Stuart Duncan, Paul Barrere and Jim Lauderdale. Barrerre (of Little Feat) sings lead vocal and plays slide guitar on his own composition, "All That You Dream."

"Across the Bridge" is actually Drew's second release, and it's largely original material. It would've been nice if the CD jacket had included lyrics. Emmitt is the sole composer of "Reach Out For Me," "Silvanite," and "Out in the Woods." The former is ¾-time is an offer of love, friendship and support in tough times. Over 7 minutes in length, the latter is a fluid piece that gives equal footing to instrumental improvisation and the song's message in a similar way to how Leftover Salmon performed it. Once the groove is established, each string wizard gets to strut their stuff. Three songs were written by Emmitt and Jim Lauderdale ("Up Where We Are," "The Awakening," and "This House"). Emmitt's collaboration with Ben Galloway resulted in two numbers, "All Night Ride" and "Cross That Bridge." "Big Ice" is a snappy instrumental written by Flinner. The nearly 7-minute cover of Dylan's "Meet Me in the Morning," gets a tad bit tedious and could've potentially been arranged.

Emmitt's multi-genre exploration takes us into steaming bluegrass ("All Night Ride"), engaging country ("Reach Out For Me"), gripping instrumental ("Silvanite"), and even some ethereal new acoustic territory ("The Awakening"). His music is tightly crafted with a visceral quality that is both intense and profound. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Drew Emmitt Rides Again.......2005-09-17

It doesn't get any better than this. Drew's voice and John Cowan's harmonies are a perfect blend. The musicians are phenominal. A 5 star choice.

4 out of 5 stars connoissuer.......2005-07-28

Excellent album! I love this guy's music and feeling for it. If it were only possible to combine Drew's soul, heart and feeling with Chris Thile's talent, the Jimi Hendrix or SRV of mandolin would result. Excellent covers of Dylan's "Meet Me In The Morning" and Little Feat's "All That You Dream" (with help from Paul Barrere of Little Feat), and the great originals we've come to expect of Drew. What can you say, he plays and writes with raw emotion and bottom of the gut feeling. Always!

In August 1998, a bomb exploded in a shopping area in Omagh, Northern Ireland, killing 29 people and injuring 200 more. One of the fatal victims was a 12-year-old boy named Shaun McLaughlin, who wrote a precociously poignant antiwar poem entitled "Across the Bridge of Hope." This tragic irony is, sadly, a recurring theme in the saga of Northern Ireland's violence, so it wasn't difficult to compile 12 songs, from some of Ireland's most famous musicians, that triumphantly honor those who suffered or died in Omagh. The CD opens with actor Liam Neeson somberly reciting Seamus Heaney's poem The Cure at Troy and winds down as he reads the album's namesake prose. Sinead O'Connor croons proudly and reverently atop a scuffling, soft-shoed hip-hop rhythm in "Chiquitita." Boyzone and the Corrs' contributions cast off any dismissible pop stardom in this context, with songs that sweetly honor their lost countrymen and -women. The gentle wake of Van Morrison's acoustic version of "The Healing Game" pacifies a grieving soul. U2's "Please" is direct, angered, and entirely devastating. Throughout, the songs embody the inextinguishable spirit of the Irish--vivacious, stalwart, enduring, faithful. For every fire, there is always the rain, and this CD is a magnificent cloud. --Beth Massa

This concert was held to draw attention to the continued troubles in Ireland. While some of the performers are not well known in the US, they carry this selection. U2, Van Morrison & Sinead make touching offerings. But, it is the Irish folk influence heard throughout the performances that I really liked.

    Product Description

Mike Golay's second solo acoustic guitar album, titled "Across the Bridge," features a total of 18 tunes, 16 of which are original compositions, and was co-produced by Grammy-winning guitarist Al Petteway, who plays on four tracks. This very special collection of music, played on multiple instruments including a custom long-scale 6-string built by Berkowitz Guitars, a Weissenborn lap slide and a... baritone ukulele (yes, it's true, twice), took shape during Mike's travels to many disparate locations over the past few years, culminating in a very nice, rather short walk down an aisle in Boston in May of 2005. It's a happy record. We need happy these days.

This reading of In Sleep, In Thunder has tenor Jon Garrison singing Carter's musical setting of six Robert Lowell poems. Speculum Musicae grasps the piece's broad-based low-end sweeps expertly, flanging when Garrison's voice seems to unlock and bellow. The music shudders as the tenor considers Lowell's lines, emphasizing the conflicted poetics with interjections that interrupt each other shatteringly. While the Lowell poems allow Carter a fairly costly emotional investigation of personality and conflict, A Mirror on Which to Dwell peeks in on the development of sonic characters, again taken on with snappy know-it-allness of musical directions this side of World War II. The music chases itself, with woodwind blurts shadowing fast-moving string slashes and percussive piano washes, all occasionally wafting into dusty quiet--a recessive sonic area that works wonderfully in relation to Elizabeth Bishop's texts. Very little in these pieces resolves itself, and the music's sum effect is a multiplicity of tonal characters that create their own space, all the while in uneasy proximity to the other spaces. With the Three Poems of Robert Frost (composed in 1942) moving with Patrick Mason's baritone bellow and Syringa sung by mezzo-soprano Katherine Ciesinski (texts by John Ashberry), the palette of tonal ranges and dynamic changes is extremely wide on this set. --Andrew Bartlett

    Album Description

Between 1975 and 1981, Elliot Carter produced his remarkable vocal trilogy: A Mirror on Which to Dwell, Syringa, and In Sleep, in Thunder. Bridge's CD marks the first integral recording of the three works, and also includes the premiere recording of Carter's 1980 orchestration, Three Poems of Robert Frost. These recordings were made under the composer's supervision, and feature Speculum Musicae, with whom Carter has worked closely during the past twenty years.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important collections of modern vocal music........1999-07-04

I like Andrew Bartlett's descriptions of "In Sleep, In Thunder" and "Mirror on Which to Dwell." As with every other musical form Carter has chosen to work in, the vocal works are among the most important in their genre for the second half-century. Bartlett doesn't talk much about "Syringa," though. In fact, it's the most original and striking work of the disc. Imagine a sort of film with a narrator calmly telling us the story of Orpheus in sort of hip modern jargon, but superimposed on the real thing--Orpheus passionately declaiming or agonizingly wailing, and all the while a little chamber orchestra is making wickedly flickering music. Everything happens simultaneously, as if we were in two or three worlds, eons apart, at the same time. This is Carter's chamber opera (in the sense that Kurtag's great "Samuel Becket: What is the Word" can be thought of as an opera), and until his new opera (composed last year at the age of 89)is released on disc, it's all we've got for a Carter opera.

    Product Description

Amy Beach (1873-1942) was probably the first woman composer to gain attention for writing successfully in the large forms of the nineteenth century: symphony, concerto, oratorio and chamber music. But it is in her songs and solo piano music that we glimpse a more private and intimate Beach. Beach produced more than 120 songs, only a few of which are known to the general public. This superb CD presents 22 of Beach s finest songs, a selection which ranges from some of her earliest published efforts through her later brooding masterpieces. American baritone Patrick Mason is accompanied on this recording by leading Beach specialist, pianist Joanne Polk. Together, Mason and Polk s penetrating interpretations make an excellent case for these songs as major English language song literature. These Patrick Mason recordings are also available on Bridge: Schubert: Die Winterreise; with Phyllis East, piano; BRIDGE 9053 Songs of Ravel, Faur , Poulenc and Dutilleux; with Robert Spillman, piano; BRIDGE 9058 Stephen Sondheim: Sunday Song Set; with David Starobin, guitar; on BRIDGE 9009 Tod Machover: VALIS, an opera on the novel by Philip K. Dick; BRIDGE 9007 Elliott Carter: Three Poems of Robert Frost; with Speculum Musicae; on BRIDGE 9014

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "SONGS OF AMY BEACH" IS TIMELESS.......2005-12-30

What a delight! I received this disc as a gift and enjoyed it more than any set of songs since the first time I heard Schubert's "Die Schoene Mullerin".

Amy Beach's charming songs for baritone and piano, written at the turn of the century, escape any hint of sentimentality and travel straight to the heart, sometimes with complexity, but often with timeless simplicity.

"Sweetheart, Sigh No More" is the most enchanting love song I have heard in years. You will long to be desperately in love again. Patrick Mason woos his lover with a luscious baritone that reminds me of Dietrich Fischer-Diescau's and a wonderful intimacy made up of tenderness, humor, and masculinity.

The interpretations of Mr. Mason and Joanne Polk are passionate, thoughtful and vital. Some are whimsical, such as "Wouldn't That Be Queer" and some are just plain wise and fresh, as in "Baby".

Hats off to Mr. Mason, Ms. Polk and Bridge Records for a real beauty!

Give a copy of this disc to everyone you love.
