Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Take a look at the running times:
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31
I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.
JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10
This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.
Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13
This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!
John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28
I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

very disappointing.......2005-08-02
Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

Customer Reviews:
if you look for something similar to UK don't buy it.......2004-09-22
Maybe it's good but if you look for something similar to UK don't buy it, you will be disapointed.
It's purely electronic instrumental music. He plays here solely on Synclavier Music Computer (whatever it is) - not a bit of this magic electric violin which I so much love on "Danger Money".
Very nice textures, melodies, and sonic space..........2004-08-19
Was oh-so-lucky to run across this CD used at Waterloo records in Austin, Tx around 1990-91. All the used CDs were going for about 6 or 7 bucks, and here was this CD, "Theme of Secrets" for $1.99. I was SURE there was a mistake on the price, but there wasn't. Didn't know the artist at the time (that I realized), but I was into synth music (no, NOT the lame-o new age crapola that oozed into mainstream during the 80s), so I gave it a listen at the store. Liked it enough at the time that I bought it (the $1.99 price tag influenced the choice for sure... I was an unemployed new college grad back then), and slowly and consistently I've gotten into the CD a little bit more every year. Of course after 13-14 years, I'm WAY into it. Outside of a few Vangelis CDs, it gets played the most of any synth CD I own.
Why? First, I think the keyboard (the Synclavier) that Jobson used provides some awesomely synthetic but still somehow organic textures. It doesn't really sound artificial though he used the Synclavier synth to record the entire album. No other keyboards were used, and Jobson used it to great effect. The other thing that grabs me about this disc is although the "Theme of Secrets" theme is a likeable melody, he moves beyond that simplicity with his other compositions, creating some simply stunning soundscapes. Some less melodic, but still quite intriguing.
Since I bought this I've heard a bit more of Jobson's work, and I have to say I'm impressed. His work with "UK" was pretty decent, and it's a shame he didn't go on to record more in the vain of "Theme of Secrets".
blew me away.......2004-08-15
I happened upon this cd by accident, my brother in-law had a big stack of cd's, and most were new age and since I've been listening to Tangerine dream at the time (1985) I thought I'd give this a listen. Since then I average once a week playtime, Eddie Jobson is a combo of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and a little bit of Patrick O'Hearn thrown in for good measure. No one comes close to playing the piano or any type thereof. If you ever come across this cd, prepare to be blown away.
Some more info on Jobson from one of his fan.......2004-06-02
...and yes, Eddie jobson has also played with another band I haven't seen quoted in the other reviews, and that's the reason I'm writing this one, altough I haven't heard this CD yet.
The band was "Curved air", another prog rock with classical music influences. Eddie Jobson does not appear on many of their albums, but the ones he's not onto are also interesting. In fact their first albums showed very early use of the very first synthesisers (ems vcs3).
Back to Jobson, I find him a very distinctive musician. The songs composed by Jobson that I like the best are:
- Metamorphosis which appeared originally on the Curved Air album Air Cut (you might find it second hand, or you might find the song on other compilation of the group)
- The songs composed by Jobson on the "UK" (UK = band's name) albums, which are also very original; you may need to listen to them several time before being able to fully appreciate them.
.
[The reason I rate this album 5 stars is that I don't want to harm his ratings, but as I said before, I never heard this album]. Ah, and yes, if you once read this, Eddie, please do some more for me/us.
Masterpiece: Yes it's a 'new age' but one with soul!.......2003-12-16
What? Out of stock? Can't believe this...
Jobson is my favorite keyboardist (he is a great rock-violinist too). Period. I like him especially because his style has qualities which put his music above all the averagely great keyboardists. THRILL(yeah)! Great melodic sense, emotional. Surely his playing is skillful and innovative but it's his music first of all. You will not be bored! Strongly recommended : UK: Debut album. 2nd/last studio album/Night after night. His solo project with Zinc "Green Album". It's funny that his UK bandmate John Wetton formed a band called Asia starting with A while EJ went with Z...

Album Description
Rebuilding the Lost Oz Before Judy Garland sang Over the Rainbow, Oz had inspired over 200 songs. This CD provides an overview of the rich early musical legacy of Oz. Most of the original music of Oz is associated with Baums stage works: The Wizard of Oz (1902), The Woggle-Bug (1905), and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz (1913). In the absence of published vocal scores, music was gathered in the form of published songs, piano or orchestral medley arrangements, and manuscripts. For the Wizard suite, I drew upon Tietjens own manuscript indications and a 1902 orchestral selection by Hilding Anderson, who would later orchestrate for Gershwin shows. The Tik-Tok Man selection is a 1913 orchestral arrangement by J. Bodewalt Lampe, who, like Gottschalk, was a pioneering film composer. From these scores, it was a matter of laying down the parts track by track; fortunately, advances in digital sampling synthesis have allowed me to record this music within a reasonable budget without sounding like Switched-on-Baum. The scores and parts are available for performance. The Cowardly Lions share of this collaboration was done before David and I met, through hours of on-line conversation. The audience for The Wizard of Oz in 1902 largely arrived in horse drawn carriages to see the first stage show in history with electrically controlled lighting. For this project to have been coordinated through the internet and realized digitally is a wonder worthy of Baums imagination.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Restorations.......2006-06-04
James Doyle does a wonderful job restoring and re-creating these early scores which would otherwise be lost to time. You should also check out his recording "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Toronto Cast Recording", a completely new musical production which is extremely faithful to Baum's original book.
What?.......2000-07-20
Can someone PLEASE help me? I love the story of The Wizard of Oz. I'm sure this is a great CD, but does it have any words or is it just music. If some one can help me I would be vary thankful!
Excellent, historical, entertaining.......2000-01-01
The Hungry Tiger CD _Before the Rainbow_ is excellent and I recommend it highly. I might (or might not) have preferred "period instruments" to the synthesizer, but then it would have cost too much to produce and we'd be without anything. My roommate/landlady said the final grand march from Patchwork Girl sounded like "roller skating music." But that was intended as a compliment. No Oz fan can live without this recording.

A Great Symphonic Masterpiece!.......2003-05-26
This Harry Potter Soundrack is the best! The symphonic orchestra is great and the music is so catchy. It is perfectly pitched for this movie. My personal favorite songs are "Fawkes Reborn" and "Leaving Hogworts". Their melodies are perfect and if you buy this cd, you won't be able to stop listening to it.
