Songs of the Humpback Whales.......2007-07-30

This has been one of my favorite recordings since it was first produced in the 70s. I went with Dr. Roger Paine on one of his recording sessions off Bermuda, and it was the first time I ever saw whales up close. They (and the dolphins I worked with for a while) became the passions of my life. These recordings are not only beautiful and moving, but are ideal as a background to meditation. They connect you to the universe.

Very nice recording...ONLY whales.......2007-01-08

This appears to be the same content as the more expensive, repackaged recording. It is ONLY whales. No music, no additions, and a very nice informational insert on the techniques and the man who did the recordings, as well as information on background noises like boat propellers that you can hear only very vaguely. As the other reviewer said, it's an excellent recording of the whales, and I believe him he says it is historically respected as such.

I love to listen to it, but it's not really a "put you to sleep" relaxation CD. I was looking for one of those, also, so I bought the Kamal Reiki Whale CD, which includes new-agey music along with whale noises, and I find that I like this CD with only the whales just as much. But I like to sit and pay attention to it, not drift off to sleep. It's very beautiful.

This is it, the original "whale album." When first released in 1970, the various grunts, squeals, rumbles and plaintive cries took the world by storm, and created a worldwide interest in cetacean vocalization and intelligence. In many ways this album opened the door to preservation efforts which have prevented (so far) the extinction of many seagoing species. It was a revolutionary concept album, then and now.

Among whales the humpback is the acknowledged virtuoso performer, and among humpback whale recordings this album remains unequalled for clarity, variety and lack of extraneous noise. Listening to it today you still get the eerie feeling that there is much to learn about these floating boxcars. It is a humbling experience.

It's about time we whales get our own music. Sure we lack the buying power of humans but is that any reason to ignore us? More whale music!

I had been looking for a pure whale cd off and on for awhile and came across this one. As others have noted, this is just the whales and the ocean, and their songs are indeed beautiful songs - its nice to hear them without any embellishments. They have so many different sounds that they make.

Comments are worthless. A pure recording of whale sounds ... no additives, and some treatmens (when they exist) are clearly defined ... It would be great if there were many recordings like this ...

I fully recommend this CD. It contains whale songs only!! No human additives. Only whales and the ocean ... Amazing.

Some of the best whale song ever captured.......2000-12-01

I recently purchased a number of whale song CDs including this one, and found this particular recording to far outshine any of the others I picked up. The clarity and vibrance of the audio surpasses the usual, under-water tone, that sort of murky quality the sound seems to have.

Beyond the sound quality though is some of the more amazing music ever captured. Whales change ther songs each season, and this particular snapshot captures the haunting beauty that will never be heard under the waves again.

Fine recordings of classic whale songs.......1999-10-01

I bought this recording after I heard Paul Winter's "Whales Alive" CD that included whale songs used in the movie Star Trek IV. "Songs of the Humpback Whale" is amazing because the sounds of the whales are amazing. Some of the tracks have a lot of deep bass noises. All of the whale songs are complex and varied. The liner notes are well written and explain some of the sounds the recording captured besides whale song. This is a good recording of songs from the largest creatures on earth. There is another release of Roger Payne's whale recordings called "Deep Voices" which is also very good. "A portion of the royalties will be shared with the Wildlife Conservation Society to benefit the work of the Whale Conservation Institute."

This and other a-s organ recordings are very precious to me. With St. John the Divine's organ now silent, being repaired after the 2001 fire, it is truly wonderful to have the sound captured. It's Ms. Papdakos willingness and courage to experiment that is so impressive. It was no surprise to hear that Gerre Hancock was influential in her becoming such a phenominal improvisationalist. Thank you for sharing your talent Dorothy, on this CD and the others you created as well!
