Like Nickel Creek and the Duhks (and Alison Krauss and Union Station before them), Crooked Still employ bluegrass elements as a springboard for an eclectic, expansive dynamic. Behind the sweetly ethereal and occasionally jazzy vocals of Aoife O' Donovan, the interplay of Gregory Liszt's banjo, Rushad Eggleston's cello (both bowed and flatpicked), and Corey DiMario's double bass gives the young New England band a sound that is closer to chamber-grass than hoedown. Though none of the material on this label debut is original, the transformations typically are, with the murder balladry of "Little Sadie" given a surprisingly sprightly reading, Bob Dylan's early "Oxford Town" taken at double-time speed, and Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" sounding more meditative than bluesy. The band and veteran producer Lee Townsend enlist a number of guests for harmony and instrumental support, but it's plain that the drummerless quartet has the talent and musical vision to deliver on this album's considerable promise. --Don McLeese

suffers from monotony.......2007-07-31
CS is an interesting mix of folk and roots inspired music, but it both lives and dies by mediocre song selection, monotonous vocals and limited (definitely NOT untalented, though) instrumentation. I admittedly enjoyed the first listen, but the sound wears a little thin afterwards. The vocals tend to be the same whispering stuff that AKrauss has been doing the last decade. Many folks will love this, but I keep wanting more from this band....more harmonies, more drive and more interesting songs.
Alternative old-time music? Bluegrass with brains?.......2007-07-28
What a good band. This cd has a well-balanced mix of lively and low-key, sad and soothing songs and tunes. For me, having cello in the mix gives the arrangements something fresh and soulful. "Shaken by a low sound" works both as a "listening cd" and as great background music.
Not Your Father's Bluegrass.......2007-07-23
My wife and I had never heard of Crooked Still when they opened for Chris Smither last fall at The Birchmere, in Alexandria, Virginia. So when someone at our table said that they were "a bluegrass band," we were a little disappointed, not really being bluegrass fans. Well, these four musicians are not your father's bluegrass band. (We got a hint of this even before they started to play, when, during set-up, Rushad Eggleston, their cellist, came out to tune his cello. Dressed in a flashy red-white-and-blue rodeo shirt, wearing a coonskin cap, and with a vaguely wild look in his eyes, Eggleston tuned his instument, tested the sound, and then, before returning backstage, gently kissed his cello before laying it in its stand.) From the first tune to the last, Crooked Still just blew us - and everyone else in the place - away. Imagine traditional "bluegrass" music rethought, infused with true passion and soul, and performed by a group of consummate young musicians with an authentic artistic sensibility, and you pretty much have Crooked Still. I cannot recommend this CD - or their first, "Hop High" - highly enough. If you're a fan of acoustic music, you should also seek out a live performance by these musicians. (Seeing firsthand the energy with which Rushad Eggleston plays his cello is, alone, worth the price of admission.)
hauntingly beautiful.......2007-05-14
my wife and i heard aoife o'donovan a couple of times when she was one of the singers with wayfaring strangers. when we were perusing the concert schedule at the somerville theatre my wife recognized her name as the vocalist for the band crooked still. we decided to give it a try but we weren't sure what to expect. within the first 10 seconds of the concert i was in love with the group. we travelled over to vermont later that month to hear them again and then travelled down to club passim in cambridge a couple of months later for a tuesday 10 o'clock at night concert to try out new material. we're going to see them again in july. i've bought four copies of each of their cd's, one copy for us and the others for friends. i am thinking of rewriting my will and leaving everything to aoife if she will sing at my funeral.
i really like wayfaring strangers and have lent my wayfaring strangers cd's to friends and relatives. hardly anyone cares for them as much as i do and i understand that it can take some getting used to. crooked still is not like that. it is so accessible that i think just about anyone would like it and some people will love it.
Shaken By A Low Sound .......2007-05-13
Great CD, I bought it after hearing then in concert!!

It's hard to tell where the traditional ends and the original begins in the music of Eilen Jewell, a sweet-voiced young singer who steeps her material in the hard times of old, reviving the stories and musical styles of the Depression. On her own "Rich Man's World," she casts herself as a "lonely rambler girl" while conjuring comparisons with Gillian Welch. Another original, "In the End," sounds uncannily like Lucinda Williams, while a revival of Eric Andersen's train-hopping "Dusty Boxcar Wall" and the double-entendre blues of the traditional "If You Catch Me Stealing" reinforce the sense of Jewell as a musical throwback to a time before she was born. Yet there are timeless pleasures here as well: a bittersweet reading of Charlie Rich's "Thanks a Lot," an understated, harmony-laden rendition of Bob Dylan's "Walking Down the Line," the sultry cantina twang of her original "Too Hot to Sleep." When the musical arrangements aren't generic Hot Club and the songs seem more like role-playing, Jewell sounds like a singer with enough promise to develop her own identity. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
A great new Artist........2007-07-26
This could be my favorite new CD this year.Eilen (rhymes with feelin') Jewell combines folk, country ,Bluegrass and Pop yet manages to have her on unique style. She in part Madeleine Peyroux, part Kelly Willis but all Eilen Jewell. The songs are top notch, not a bad cut. She takes an old Johnny Cash Sun cut, "Thanks a Lot" and puts such a fresh coat of paint on it that it took me a few listens to recognize it. There are a couple of other outstanding covers, Eric Andersen's "Dusty box car wall" and Dylan's "Walking down the line" In both cases she makes them her own. However it's the originals that really shine. "Rich Man's world", In the end", "too hot to sleep", as I said, not a bad tune in the 12. I especially like "High shelf Booze" which would not have been out of place on an early Emmylou Harris" album. A terific CD!
Newhouse News Review .......2007-07-24
Eilen Jewell's first name rhymes with "feelin'," and there's little doubt that she'll leave listeners hooked on that feeling from listening to her smooth heartache songs, most sung in a drawl that's occasionally reminiscent of Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.
"Letters from Sinners and Strangers" is primarily comprised of originals, along with a few notable exceptions including a standout, harmony-filled version of Bob Dylan's "Walkin' Down the Line" and a tasty take of Eric Anderson's "Dusty Boxcar Wall."
Yet Jewell sounds most at ease working against some jazz-textured fiddle and guitar work in the red hot "Heartache Boulevard;" going retro-country on the upbeat "Rich Man's World;" singing wondrously in the Williams' flavored "In The End;" or getting into a blues mood on "Where They Never Say Your Name."
She's got a great band working with her throughout the album, especially guitarist Jerry Miller and violinist Daniel Kellar. This one is first-rate from start to finish from an artist whose star is on the rise.

This album's title cut finds the veteran folk-blues troubadour, now in his early 60s, pondering the possibility of living to be 100, thus setting the thematic tone for an uncommonly reflective, meditative set. The ragtime Zen of "Open Up," the philosophical "Seems So Real," and the rock-bottom despair in his cover of Peter Case's "Cold Trail Blues" all suggest that the virtuosic fingerpicker and evocatively smoky vocalist has reached a point in his life where he's pondering the biggest issues of mortality, a perspective that informs the complex relationship in "Father's Day." Not all of the material is that introspective, as the uptempo, electric rock of "Diplomacy" is as sardonic as Randy Newman, while "Origin of the Species" encapsulates Adam and Eve, Charles Darwin, and intelligent design. Smither also pays homage to two seminal influences, transforming Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" into an acoustic, accordion-laced waltz and reviving Lightnin' Hopkins's version of the traditional "Blues in the Bottle." Ollabelle provide harmonies on two cuts, with mandolinist Tim O' Brien also offering instrumental and vocal support. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
An excellent craftsman .......2007-08-03
I discovered Chris Smither on a recent trip to Boston (they were playing one of his CDs at Baja Betty's in Brookline), and I ordered this CD when I got home.
It doesn't disappoint!! Chris Smither is an excellent craftsman, with lyrics and music reminiscent of Guy Clark and all those others you probably already know and love.
But even though he may remind you of another artist or artists at first listen, he stands on his own. With each subsequent listen, you pick up the subtleties in his music that make him unique, and you enjoy it even more.
Chris Smith is our new favorite musical find. We're stocking our library with his albums.
Lovely as Chris Smither always is..........2007-06-08
We were so pleased to get Chris' latest and as we had hoped the cd is Terrific. He's a great guitarist and somehow his lyrics tells stories that allow us in to know more about him...a great story teller. This is our 7th Chris Smither cd...he's incredible.
Smither is the best.......2007-05-15
Chris Smither is the kind of singer/songwriter/guitar picker that you want to go out and see whenever he comes to town. His every song sounds like music, and his lyrics give you cause to think.
another piece by a largely unrecognized master musician,songwriter........2007-03-31
i have been a fan of chris smither`s for about 35 years since first hearing cuts on the now long gone radio station WHFS,102.3 in bethesda,md. (D.C. and vicinity listeners from long ago should recall the station affectionately, also.) smither`s guitar playing is a unique and distinctive blend of folk, blues, and country that can only be described as superlative. his songwriting and way with words are unmatched, and comparable to Dylan, in my opinion. my favorite albums are "don`t it drag on","up on the lowdown", and now this most recent offering to those who can appreciate his talents,"leave the light on".
Leave the light on.......2007-02-24
I couldn't think of a better title for my review, listen to the the song and I think you will agree. Chris Smither gets better with every cd that he makes. He has a sound of his own and sees and hears life through a very unique perspective. There is not a cut on this cd that I don't like. Try it you want be disapointed.

This scruffy, well-traveled, literate Rhode Islander recalls the desultory whispers of Nick Drake, the ragged tunefulness of Ryan Adams, and the natural wit of a young John Prine. He may come off as a slacker, painting his name on water towers and jamming to Townes Van Zandt on the porch, but his lyrical skills, unpretentiously poetic and refreshingly concise, suggest a purposefulness that's deeper than just folksy charm. Within the sparest musical framework--fingerpicked guitar, whirling organ, lo-fi drums, some bass--Ritter evokes a delicately dense romanticism that's more on-edge than earnest. "This world must be frightening," he sings, "everybody's on the run/but I can't leave this world behind." There's quiet wisdom in Ritter's world; fans of post-Dylan singer-songwriters will want to listen close. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
The best musician I have found.......2007-08-01
A couple of months ago I was watching a pod about the SXSW music festival in which they featured Josh Ritter for about 10 seconds. From that short exposure I became interested and I soon got the first two albums, which I really loved. When I became hungrier for more Josh Ritter I got this album, and after listening to eat once I fell in love with in and liked it more than the latter two. The other two are more clean and may be a little over worked, but this album has that rough characteristic of an artist that has finally discovered his what his music is about, it is Josh Ritter with out being spoiled by over production and editing of his music. It is simply one of the best albums I have ever owned.
He's From IDAHO, not Rhode Island.......2006-06-08
Probably the most under-rated folk musician around, his lyrics are amazingly descriptive and melodies range from upbeat to languid. If you have The Animal Years (which is great) or Hello Starling (merely good), you should get this album.
No more!!.......2005-10-06
I continue my campaign to get all these mopey guys who are so heavily influenced by Nick Drake and Elliott Smith to go ahead and follow their example a little more closely.
Okay, that sounds a bit harsh, but I really mean musically, not the other thing. There are some good songs on here but they are desperatly in need of someone to arrange some decent music and some less monotonous singing. I mean, even if Drake and Smith sounded like they were on 'ludes, there was a certain complexity to their music. A non-English-speaker would be hardpressed to differntiate one song from another on this album.
Whatever you do, don't play this for a coma patient.
A great find.......2005-07-23
This is a really great album. It is the perfect mellow road trip music. Reminds me a lot of Bob Dylan. This album was a great find and I look forward to hearing more from Josh Ritter.
Instant classic.......2005-01-04
While Josh Ritter's newest album is a little more polished perhaps (on the surface), this one is every bit as good. JR's songs are like paintings, full of detail and atmosphere; they're fabulous from across the room, but you see all kinds of things when you get up close and intimate. And he makes it seem so ridiculously easy: a stroke here and there and he's conjured up a whole scene. How does he do that? I think he writes some of the best lyrics in contemporary folk music; he's right up there with the established greats, I reckon - a natural; he makes you feel so at home with his good-natured vocals, always underplayed and subtle. There's an infectious warmth to his music that makes you listen over and over. I can't be the only person waiting with baited breath for the next album.

this group has put out. All the songs have beautiful meanings. Pay close
attention to the words of "Then Came The Morning"...Wow! How powerful!! It gives me goose bumps each time I hear it. "Forgiven Again" is another
one, and don't forget "Do You Want To Be Forgiven", and "Pray for Me". You
definitely won't go wrong adding this CD to your music library. Ernie Haase and Signature Sound are totally AWESOME!!

dang that gal can sing!.......2006-03-10
i was already a fan of lori mckenna when i saw her on oprah with faith hill. personally, i think lori's version (the original) of the song 'fireflies' is waaaay better than faith's rendition. i also like lori's voice better - sorry to any faith fans! mckenna's voice has a folksy, fluttering sound that draws you in - her voice catches and your heart feels that ole pull. her songs are so breathtakingly real and down-to-earth, yet they are lyrical and poetic at the same time.
beautiful work!

Muffled.......2005-10-05
I just learned of Lori McKenna from the Oprah show with Faith Hill. I typed in her name in "keyword" and was amazed that she was so popular and had made several albums!
From reading about her, she is an amazing person and I really wanted to own all of her albums, but I can barely understand what she is saying, however, I still plan to buy at least one just because I can relate to her depth, her sincerity, her
honesty, her perception of life.
I regret saying this, but I hope someone down the line continues to make her songs (like Faith Hill did) so that we can fully understand and appreciate them. Lori is a wonderful person, so
this, in no way, is meant to be offensive.
I just can't make out much of what she is saying.
Love it!.......2004-05-01
I love the music on this CD. I find myself playing it over and over. If I have my MP3 player on random, I always stop to listen (and sing) whenever one of these songs comes on. I first heard her on NPR, and I have loved every song from her I've heard. Her voice takes some getting used to, but the songs grow on you the more you hear them. Thirtysomething Boston folkie McKenna often comes off like another Dar Williams acolyte, but sometimes she's a bit more. Her waifish voice and pretty acoustic arrangements can give way to a snarling wit. "I heard about Adam and Eve," she sings on the skeptical, newgrass-styled "God Will Thank You," "but I still believe she never got a fair trial." Her coffeehouse jottings can yield genuinely catchy songs like the sensual "This Fire" and the sunny, bubbly "Girl Like Me." Unfortunately, they also yield some precious poesy, or worse, songs like "Pink Sweater," a rather obvious slag of hate crimes. Vengeful preaching doesn't much become McKenna, but the simpler, more personal emotions of songs such as the solo acoustic closer "You Are Loved" play nearer to her strengths. --Roy Kasten

Incredible songwriting.......2005-12-10
I found Lori McKenna on [...] and had to own this CD. Her lyrics are honest, wry, biting, and compelling. She has the ability to invite you into a song and take you along for the ride.
Lori's Music is Awesome!!.......2005-08-03
I was so pleased to hear Lori had a new CD out!! Her music is awesome, she has a voice like no other!
Love Lori!!.......2003-08-05
Lori McKenna has quickly become my favorite artist in the singer-songwriter category. All of her songs are simple and honest but never boring. Her voice will grab you and keep you wanting more. There is obvious talent when someone can sing without over production and tons of background music. My favorites from this album are 'Fireflies', 'Mars', 'Deserving Song', and 'You are Loved'. 'Never Die Young' is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!! Richard Shindell adds vocals to this song that Lori wrote about her mother that died when she was 6 years old.
Love Her!!!.......2002-12-04
Listen guys,
This woman to me is very very good. And only two cd's out??
Where are all the music lovers out there? I don't know if she is even out in alot of cd stores. I love her!! Maybe sort of an Alanis M but laid back and folkish. I would recommend BOTH of her
cd's. Actually maybe a better voice than Alanis. Sit back and relax and listen if you like good folk music. She may be my favorite female artist in the singer-songwwiter,folk-rock,indie music, and I have a good varied collection of them.

Eerie and dark music for the soul.......2007-03-08
Midnight Syndicate's 13th HOUR is the perfect album to listen to while you write; its dark mood and somber atmosphere are inspiring to me when I write a horror tale. It also serves as great background music to your Halloween party or gothic evening among friends.
This was the first album I got from them and I want all the others too because I'm hooked now. They recently re-released their early works under the title OUT OF THE DARKNESS. Also, check out VAMPYRE and GATES OF DELIRIUM.
Whether you're the Goth type or a casual fan wanting some cool music to set the ambiance at a party, 13th HOUR is an awesome symphonic horror album.
Fantastic!.......2007-02-03
I write gothic horror stories and love to listen to music that "puts me into another world". I'm so glad that I found this CD. It has definately inspired some of my best writing.
great music.......2007-01-11
used for a Halloween party, it was perfect really set the mood
very cool.......2007-01-10
I'm a halloween fan from wayyy back and this is the best cd I've found for just the occasion.
Excellent Atmospheric c.d........2007-01-08
We had this playing in all the rooms of our house during our Halloween party last year, all the tracks going in different order in a continuous loop. This set quite a mood! Everyone commented on the music and how great it was. Just the right amount and use of sound effects. So many Halloween type c.d.'s go too far and become just corny and that wrecks the mood you're trying to create in the first place. After the party, when everyone left but for my cousins and us, we just had this playing in the library and had a ball scaring the wits out of each other with our own "personal" ghost stories. We're not into the whole goth culture thing, but we can appreciate what M.S. is doing. To listen to this at only Halloween is a mistake, you're short changing yourself. Put this on curled up with you're favorite suspense, thriller or horror book for an added dimension to the experience.
