    "Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

    This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

        This is a must-have album. Why is this not available? You have Copland, Ives, Gould, Herrmann, Moross and others. These are great American composers. I have never seen such a well rounded and representive body of works from so many great Americans. Go out and find a copy of this one. It's great!

              I've always had a soft spot for the music of Jean Françaix, largely because I like his insouciant take on life. His music is unfailingly light and saucy, not taking itself too seriously. That, plus the craft to pull it off, makes his music a constant delight. For the longest time the folks at Wergo records must have felt the same way; they issued lots of CDs featuring his music, often featuring Françaix himself at the piano in chamber pieces. This CD, though, comes from Koch Schwann and is the first I've seen of his solo piano music. The late M. Françaix was himself a superb pianist and he could certainly write for the instrument; for me, his finest music is chamber music that includes the piano. This CD, done by the Dutch pianist Annette Middelbeek, shows us Françaix's compositional qualities in spades. I do wish, though, Françaix had recorded this music himself. From the evidence of his own recordings I suspect he would have brought a good deal more verve to the music than Middelbeek does; hers is skillful playing but it lacks the last bit of piquancy that Françaix always brought to his own music. However, that is only wishful thinking, and we must be grateful for the current release.

              I will not repeat what has already been said in the previous review by Melvyn Sobel, but I do want to add that the characterizations of the 'Five Portraits of Girls' (with the sections 'Capricious,' 'Tender,' 'Pretentious,' 'Pensive,' and 'Modern') are deliciously witty and well-drawn. The gently danceable 'In Praise of Dancing' is a treasure. But best of all are the pastiches contained in 'An Eclectic Musicologist Takes a Stroll,' with its wry imitations of Handel, Chopin, D. Scarlatti and Ravel. The Scarlatti is perhaps not quite as spot on as the others but it has its own fizzy quality, and the homage to Ravel, Françaix's model in so much he wrote, is both reverential and moving.

              5 out of 5 stars FUN WITH FRANCAIX!!!.......2003-01-23

              Piano aficionados, gather `round, this fairly new Koch/Musica Mundi compilation of French composer, Jean Francaix (1912-1997), is an out-and-out delight. Reminiscent often of contemporaries Satie, Poulenc, Milhaud, Sauguet, Chabrier, more often than impressionists Debussy and Ravel, the piano music of Francaix abounds in charm, witty quirkiness, jazzy turns, easy lyricism and undeniable affection.

              There is something here for every taste, every mood. From the bouncy, brief Piano Sonata, with its dreamy second movement "Elegie," through the deliciously varied miniatures that abound in the Five Portraits of Girls, with the particularly poignant "La Tendre" and mysterious "La Pensive," to the six pieces of In Praise of Dancing, with its very offbeat "Amabile" nod to Carl Maria von Weber and "Andantino" homage to Ravel, Francaix is consistently rewarding our attention. His Five Encores offer titillating and vivacious syncopations, often wedding Gershwin to Debussy! And the peculiarly Satie-sounding work titled An Eclectic Musicologist Takes a Stroll, written in 1987, are curious ditties that, as well, pay "hommage" to Handel, Chopin, Scarlatti and Ravel, though the musical references are nicely circuitous. The seven minute Eight Variations on the Name of Johannes Gutenberg, conceived by Francaix after receiving the Gutenberg Medal in Mainz, Germany, are pleasing and diverse, the theme modest and attractive. The Scherzo is a genial piece, more Milhaud than Chopin, and full of subdued prankishness.

              Pianist Annette Middelbeek is obviously at home here. She brings a smile and a devilish "tweak" to the music that is simply irresistible. Just right. The sound, as well, suits her sunny approach: crisp, clear, detailed, but not lacking warmth.

              What am Amazing CD! I heard about this CD from a friend. I don't generally buy CD's unless I know the artist, but I took a chance this time. I'm very happy I did because this CD has some of the nicest music I've heard in a while. The imagry is very ethereal and relaxing. Buy it!!!
