No More Wig for Ohio

Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
Dave Madson's beats aren't played out, they're just tired. They crawl out of bed looking like shit but they don't bother showering. Somewhere between the bedroom and the front door, they attract extra layers of dust and mold, bits of garbage latching magnetically onto them. Then Madson (aka Odd Nosdam) sends his beats out into the world, where they trawl back alleys and sewers for more friends. Come nightfall, the beats drag their asses back to Anticon HQ where Odd waits patiently, ready to rinse them through his trusty MPC-2000. Far dustier than his work with the quasi-symphonic cLOUDDEAD project, No More Wig For Ohio finds Odd burnishing misshapen gems into sonic gold. A narcotic fusion of grinding organ sequences, wistful synth passages and muffled breakbeats, the record exudes a childlike exuberance in the early going, before descending into a Shadow-esque gloom. As RJD2's Deadringer was to 2002, so this album is to 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Odd Nosdam is a friggin genius.......2005-05-13

Where to begin. The only exposure I had to Odd Nosdam was his work on Sole's second album, which I highly recomend, and also the two songs he had on the Anticon label sampler. When I bought this album, I had no idea what I was in for. The very first song off the cd, reels you in with many different vocal samples, meant to be like a radio changing channels, but no radio plays music this good. In this album Nosdam explores vocals samples used as the instruments, classical music, hilarious voice samples, and gritty static. There are several tracks that really stand out on this album. Wig 6 (or track 6) is by far my favorite, Odd Nosdam takes a cheesy 80's infomercial for an electric organ, but instead of playing organ music, he plays funky techno instead. In wigs 4 and 11, The only samples he uses are vocal samples, and adds drums that blend flawlessly with the samples, but this is true in all the tracks. I cannot give enough praise to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Right up your Anticon alley.......2003-08-24

Damn, if you're looking for some badass turntablism, this is the CD for you. The CD is kind of split into two sections by the mood of the music. There are so many random samples, but Odd always seems to makes it work. If you're a fan of Dose One, cLOUDDEAD, or any of their side prodjects, this is a must have.

Odd Nosdam has become one of my favorite
recent artists. The CD is all music, no
lyrical material outside of samples. I
am not usually a fan of random samples
being thrown in, and ending tracks with
15 seconds of hum and tape hiss, but he
does it so well.

Many of the tracks are short - the first
5 being under 2 minutes, but what he does
with those 2 minutes is lace satisfying
hefty beats in picture perfect form.

The beats aren't crisp, tight and bouncy
like I usually like them. Instead they're
thick, full and make my neck break from
head nodding. Most of the beats are a
little slower, but elastic and incredibly
warm and flowing.

Like one of the samples of a girl:
"Bang ya head... bang ya fu**in head"

There are some really original and fun
beats on this CD, ranging from strange
and playful (and still banging) to bass
swept and full on enveloping melody and
kick snare heaven. Sometimes you're
like "Hey that's a nice choppy piano
riff, but how's that fit in..." right
when he drops a ten ton kick on your
head.

Often, also, he wastes no time in giving
you the beat you seek, many tracks almost
starting off with the beat, yet managing
a completely atmospheric melody or
ambience. Everything is skillfully done
on the CD, and despite it's appearance as
being choppy and unrelated, I find that
there is a well grounded feel for the
whole album.

Excellent, highly reccomended
I don't have another CD that sounds quite
like Odd Nosdams 'No more wig for Ohio' but
I'll be seeking out his other CD's soon.
