Live is the way to enjoy the SubDudes.......2007-08-01

The Subdudes are an avaerage band on their Studio Albums, but Live they are Astounding!!!! and this CD is Live so I can't get enough of It. I've seen them Live and this is a great Recording, A Must have if you are a dudes fan

Subdudes rule.......2004-11-05

I had the good fortune to see the Subdudes in Reno October 2004 and can report that they put on one hell of a show. The "Live at Last" album captures the energy and musicianship perfectly. The Dudes play a wide range of music that ranges form Stax type R&B to gentle ballards to rock n roll, all with a bit of a Cajun tinge. It is rare to find a recording where you like all the cuts. My favorites are a rollicking version of "Sarita" and "Sugar Pie", a very moving piece from a parent to a grown child who has moved far away. I own this album and "Miracle Mule" and highly recommend both.

Nothing like the Subdudes.......2002-07-12

There's something about the Subdudes that no other band sounds like. Soulful with great harmonies and songs with meaning. I luv all the Subdude albums, but this one gives you a feel for there live appearances. I heard that 3 of the 4 Dudes are getting back together again.

An Aussie Fan.......2002-01-31

This is a brilliant CD. In many ways it's better than the studio stuff I've heard of theirs (I've heard Lucky), and I thought both as a whole and individually the songs are simply superb.

Super concert by a super band........2001-02-25

Live at Last is a greatest hits compilation. This live CD contains many of the songs from Primitive Streak as well as their first two CD's. But the band is more acoustic in this live performance than they are on Primitive Streak. I recommend this CD along with Primitive Streak. Too bad these guys broke up, they are one of the best bands to record in the 90's. For listening try "Straight Shot" (tr#1), "He's Got You on His Mind" (tr#3), and "Need Somebody" (tr#16).

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Every artist of reasonable commercial success has a 'genius' album. With Bette Midler, this concert recording goes a long way towards it for her. it captures the boundless energy and humour along with the professionalism of a top class performer. Genuine entertainment and the energy of the music carries the listener even if they are not familiar with or even like the genre of her music.

Bette's best, most energetic and funniest live CD. Her voice is in topic shape, the personality is incredible. It's worth the price just for the opening and the finale's "tribute to the bi-centennial." Plus, Vicky Edie is hysterical and the famous "Sophie Tucker jokes" are ones she would probably be embarrased to tell today. Get it before it goes out of print.

why oh why don't 'they' release this show on dvd.It's been on television mid seventies in europe several times,in different countries(Belgium,holland,germany).So i't can't be that difficult to release the entire show on dvd.although i was still very young at that time i never forgot it and the moment i could afford it i bought the double album(of course the moment it was released on cd i bought that one too the lp's were worn out)the whole live at last is "Divine".
And what happened to the vhs release of 'art or bust'?

This albulm is just fantastic, what a great performer and the sound is great. This is one of my all time favourite, with such classic as "Delta Dawn" which is amazing, this albulm shows the Divine Miss M at her best.

Petty Rocks.......2003-09-17

I've always thought that studio albums don't even compare with live performances. I've also always loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. But even I was astounded at how great "The Last DJ" sounds live. From the opening notes of the title track to Mike Campbell's solo on "Lost Children" to the final chords of "Can't Stop The Sun", Tom and the Heartbreakers sound incredible. It's almost like listening to a completely new album. And that's not all. The band goes on to play classics including "Change of Heart" and "I Need To Know", then closes with a ten-minute-long "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and a "You Wreck Me" encore.

Unfortunately, the editing is poor. In some songs the camera changes every three seconds. Some shots don't last for more than half a second. Occasionally the camera will slow down for a minute to watch Tom sing or to pan across the stage, but it doesn't happen often enough. One of the longest shots is of a woman in the audience singing along to two verses of a song. Who knows what's happening on stage. Also, the lighting on some camera shots leaves a lot to be desired. In other places, however, the colors and lighting effects are awesome. Overall, the quality of the music makes the camera problems seem minor.

The extra features are hardly worth mentioning: two TV commercials promoting "The Last DJ" album and some random outtakes of Tom making a video.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Technical virtuosity!.......2005-11-26

I'll preface this review by saying that I've been disappointed in the past with some of Midori's recordings. She was never lacking in technical skill, and RARELY does she have intonation problems. I did have issues with her musicalty. It is in technically difficult pieces (like the Paganini caprices) that her skills shine.

This recording is a dazzling display of technical ability and artistry. Midori has the audacity to attempt Ernst's 6th polyphonic etude (The Last Rose of Summer) in a LIVE recital. She pulls it off without error except intonation issues on a few notes (easily forgiven!). The CD is worth owning for this one piece alone.

The Beethoven and Strauss sonatas are played with wonderful clarity and.. dare I say... musicality. The sound quality is excellent save a few audible coughs from the audience which come with live recordings.

GREAT STUFF.......2003-11-02

This CD is ample evidence of Midori's virtuosity, coupled with first-rate musicality. However, I have to disagree with one reviewer's assertion that she is non-pareil. Indeed, her Ernst is not perfect, though it comes very close. Careful listening will pick up slight intonation errors.Ricci performed with more facility. It is utterly ridiculous to place her above Heifetz, or even Perlman. And it is even more ridiculous to suggest that those two violinists were afraid to record the Ernst. Midori is great, but not as great as Heifetz or Perlman or Ricci.

A Walk in the Park.......2001-08-07

Not to toot my own horn; I play four instruments for over forty years. So what? Don't just listen to the music. Listen to the notes. Midori miss a note? I rather doubt it. The orchestra may be taking a day off for a walk in the park; but, Midori's persisting drive brings them back time and time again. All of the artists seem to be a bit stiff in their presentation. It's noticeable if you listen. One never knows if their review will be implemented. Mine will always deal with the worlds of difference between hearing the work and listening. This reviewer is not concerned with Midori's ability to equal or surpass another's work. I am interested in what her presentation does for me on it's own merit. Frankly, I am surprised that she doesn't catch her instrument on fire much like the rubing of sticks together until the heat brings forth fire. Midori is fire.

A Master shines !!!.......1999-06-12

What can be said about Midori that a fan doesn't already know ? Again, her unique, beautiful style is on display.

I've listened to this Strauss Sonata many many times and I feel Midori has created a miracle on a CD. Such emotion, timbre, richness of tone... a violin can NOT sound better...

Supreme artist and virtuoso playing spellbinding music!.......1998-09-10

Four days before her nineteenth birthday, standing for the first time on the stage of a legendary building, in front of a sellout crowd (3000), Midori delivers an extraordinary 100-minute long program, from memory. Unfortunately, the CD version can only include 75 minutes of it, and thus excluded Mozart's sonata K.301 and a resplendent tour de force of Sarasate's Zapateado. Therefore, I sincerely exhort anyone who's interested in Midori to buy the LD or VHS version.

The second piece of the program is the magnificent, hyper-romantic, yet seldom recorded sonata by the young Richard Strauss. In contrast with the previous piece, this ultra-dramatic sonata is marvellously rich in content and expressive opportunities, and one can scarcely imagine it being played more effectively by someone else. Midori's technical finesse and enchanting tone, governed by a contemplative mind and a feverishly ardent heart, ready to pump out into the rapt audience at any moment, culminate in an immensely moving rendition. The listener must also credit the pianist Robert McDonald's spirited and sensitive playing. One can't help wondering why one so rarely hears this splendid piece.

This enigma is not so confounding after one listens to Heifetz's 1954 studio recording of the same piece. Seasoned critic Henry Roth declares that the Strauss Sonata "belongs" to Heifetz in the sense that few would dispute his supremacy. Indeed, Heifetz championed this work throughout his career, yet apparently to little avail; were Midori in Heifetz's position, she would positively have widely popularized the work.

Midori begins the second half with Beethoven's Sonata No. 8. She captures the gaiety and animation of the outer movements as well as anyone else, yet they are not fully gratifying. In the first movement, the exposition is repeated, later recapitulated, but unbelievably, her interpretations-though individually superb-of these three times are virtually the same, lacking in variety. In the third movement, her pursuit of wanton vivacity in a certain passage sacrifices the tone quality. Yet her slow movement is super-sensitive, particularly in transitional passages; it is the finest rendition of this movement I've ever heard--even superior to Szeryng's.

The following piece--Ernst's Variations on "The Last Rose of Summer"--I consider to be one of the three most technically demanding pieces ever written for the violin, together with Paganini's variations on Nel cor piu non mi sento and God Save the Queen.

The most horrendous part is about halfway through the middle, when the left hand plucks the celebrated theme, and the bow plays legato arpeggios across all four strings as an accompaniment at the same time. Don't forget that the left hand also has to press the swift arpeggio notes! Then the left-hand pizzicato is exchanged for artificial harmonics, singing the melody while the arpeggios still whirl around. The pizzicato returns to repeat the dumbfounding passage, and then she heads into the final variation, designed to exhibit the violin's kaleidoscopic tone colors: Harmonic staccatos-one of the ultimate tests in precision and coordination of both hands-juxtaposed alternately with a blizzard of double-harmonics, huge octave leaps, full-pelt runs up and down a single string, fingered octaves, pizzicato, etc.

Midori audaciously elected to play in her New York debut this terrifying piece which, as far as I know, only Ricci, Kremer and Vengerov to date have recorded in history; Heifetz and Perlman undoubtedly have never dared to take up its stratospheric challenge. Double-harmonics often make a good violinist sound like two bad ones, but Midori, with her exceptionally lengthy, slender, and agile fingers, effortlessly negotiates these intricacies and makes them sound as if they were played by two fine flutists. This will no doubt render multitudes of violinists, such as Heifetz, green with envy. The fiendishly difficult fireworks are all tossed off with lithe gracefulness and seeming ease; the left-hand pizzicatos are articulate, the harmonics pellucid, the octave shifts pure in intonation, and the tone quality immaculate. To be relentlessly critical, in this live concert, there were a paltry two or three fleeting notes that weren't of perfect pitch. See if you can find an edited studio recording closer to perfection.

Midori's prodigious prowess lies not only in her ability to make the most herculean pieces sound easy, but make them sound musical. We can try to forget about all the pyrotechnics; rather than marvel at her unprecedented instrumental mastery, we can immerse ourselves in the wonderfully beautiful music, and savour the bountiful nuances.

Anyone would badly need a respite after performing such a strenuous piece, and Midori gave her hands--but not her mind and heart--a brief relief in Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor. Here's another meticulously thought out and superbly expressive rendition that, complemented with a most sympathetic tone, can hardly fail to melt the attentive listener's heart.

Ravel's Tzigane [gypsy] begins with a long oration of the solo violin, the first part of it entirely on the G string. In some other versions, e.g. by Francescatti, the solo part sounds inert, mundane, and monotonous; certainly that is not what I expect from Midori. Even solely on one string, Midori, by dint of divergent bow pressures, portamentos and vibrato, plus rubato, creates a most colorful, elastic, luscious, bewitching, yet doleful tone. Throughout the piece, she perpetually captivates the audience with her breathtaking technical wizardry, variegated and multi-dimensional tone, boundless array of expressive devices, stark dynamic contrasts, and subtle phrasing.

Due to the limited space here, I cannot pinpoint several startling details of Midori's innovative rendition. To sum up, one can only be awe-struck by her sophisticated mind, natural gypsy spirit, and dazzling virtuosity, which results in a performance that brought the house down.

It seems that the 19-year-old Midori has nearly reached the pinnacle of violin art. Every rational, experienced and impartial person who had the privilege to witness this unforgettable concert will have to concede that, at least in expressive and virtuosic music, Midori is already a nonpareil.

ok, i understand why black sabbath didn't want this released - given that at the time of release(1980) ozzy wasn't in the band any more, but....
this is a fantastic record of the live sound of the band (recorded in 1973) and it even has an early version of "killing yourself to live" - with different lyrics (the song hadn't yet been recorded)
a must for fans of ozzy-era black sabbath.

LIVE SABBATH.......2006-03-30

My review is based on the Westminster Music version of Live At Last.It is exactly the same as this version for sale.It has much cooler cover art too.Anyway,most will think I'm crazy,but this is my favorite Sabbath album thus far.That is just my opinion(let the hate mail start rolling in).I feel the live tracks just put the studio versions to the way side.Not that the studio cuts are garbage - they're excellent.But these live songs are slower,heavier,and much darker.That's due to Tony going drop d for all the songs.The main complaint that people seem to have about this cd is the production and sound quality.In reality,I think people are stretching it.It's pretty damn good;maybe because I like the rawness and gritty quality of the whole set and recording.Pure sludge/doom here friends.Some folks are just to slick for this.All in all,what I'm conveying to all you out there in computer land is this - I LIKE THIS! P.S - Go out and get their early studio albums as well.

I'll be honest with you...I just bought this CD for about $3 at a clearance sale and I wasn't expecting much. I'm not even sure I'd even heard of this album before but I figured what the hell? Well, I am about one minute into track 3 and I am in my glory. It's taking me right back to the last Sab show I saw a couple years ago. I think it's pretty much the same set too! I have seen Sabbath about 5 times and they are definitely my favorite band to see live. And I have been to a lot of shows my friends.
This is a pretty good record of the band in their prime. As some other reviewers have noted, the sound quality is raw, and yes, somewhat like a cleaned-up bootleg, but that's all part of the appeal for me. A+

4.5....Iommi Is Especially Great Here.......2005-06-11

Ozzy's voice is just before its peak (which reached its highest, and best...from 1973 to 1975), but still sounds quite pleasantly sarcastic. One can detect how he was beginning to get that excellent shriek eventually attained on the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage full lengths. So, I must begin by stating that anyone whom has an interest in the development of what became one of heavy metal's best voices should definitely get this. It's impossible to compare Ozzy's voice on ANY of his solo stuff to how he sounds here...he was just a MUCH better vocalist then. That said, I'd step on this release to get to the Ronnie James Dio led "Live Evil" release of Sabbath...Dio was technically a far better singer.
But I have to press home just how fantastic the REST of the band sounds here as well. Geezer Butler is excellent and creative with the patented, simple Sabbath riffs. Bill Ward is the one cheated most by the substandard quality sound here; his performance is VERY good, but buried. That,along with the inclusion of a couple of phoned in songs here ("Snowblind", "Children of the Grave") knocks a half point off my rating. However, it cannot go without saying that the guitar fest proceeding from "Wicked World" is absolutely brilliant. Iommi proves how astoundingly underrated he was and remains to this day with this stellar, highly musical performance. This is essential, but I'm a bit hard on it rating wise because phoned in performances bother me.
Also bearing mention is the KILLER early version of Killing Yourself To Live here. Total, abysmally despairing doom metal from Planet Hellsville.

I remember when this first came out on lp.Every Sabbath fan that I knew ended up buying a copy of it.Within like two years,you could find it on the $1.99 rack.Now,it's been faithfully reissued on CD.Great!Now we don't have to worry about wearing down the vinyl pressing.Prime live Sabbath to be fully experienced here.Tunes I liked best were "Sweet Leaf","Snowblind" and the "Wicked World/Supernaut/Drum&Guitar Solo" medley.A should-have for all Sabbath fans.OZZY!! OZZY!!

The original Sweetwater stood out as a rock-fusion band without a guitarist, the only one of their era. This reunion gig has taken on a guitarist with a heavy, dominating sound, so it doesn't really sound like Sweetwater. Nancy Nevins's new, post car-crash voice isn't really suited for all of the old Sweetwater stuff, and especially not for shouting over a heavy fuzz guitar, but she does manage a few moments of magic, especially on the new-material "Heroes and Ladies."

Low-Down Emotion and Rich Composition.......2002-06-15

Sweetwater is even better now than when they opened the historical Woodstock Festival. Images and words drift across my mind as I listen to "Live at Last." I'm sent images of sadness, of joy, of longing. Nancy Nevins has too much soul to be white. Like Billie, Nancy sings from vast and probably painful experience with a voice much richer now than in earlier recordings; it has an ache to it, a longing that touches the listener, yet it's not without joyous hope for whatever's coming. "Rock Me," the 3rd cut, isn't something you can just sit and listen to without introspection. Hat's off to Sweetwater, then and especially now.

This is a real good CD! You need to hear this. The live quality is excellent. This is the reunion concert of the first band to perform at the original Woodstock. They had the potential to impact and change the direction of music in their day. The tragedy that struck this band with Nanci's car accident not only affected her and the band but we all lost out too. When you listen to this CD it's hard to believe this band just got together again after 30 years of being apart and out of music. They can still ROCK with the best of them and do. They were ahead of their time in many ways. If you want to learn more about what happened to end their rise to fame before their time see the video "Sweetwater a True Rock Story". ...If you are a fan of Sweetwater, Woodstock, the 60s and early 70s; if you are music history buff or just want to experience some darn good, new to you, but still Classic Rock, check out this CD. It is really cool. Enjoy!!!

Hard to imagine why they weren't wildly popular.......2002-04-11

These folks are oh so good! There are 3 or 4 cuts from their original [2] LP's where they out-airplaned the Airplane, and did it with a more jazzy flair. Seriously, Nansi/Nancy Nevins easily outsang Grace, in the same style, but with more chops and more heat/warmth. On other tunes [or introductions], they have this almost Renaissance style on certain a capella passages, with great harmony and counterpoint (and never bland, as sometimes happened when the Stone Poneys tried the same sort of thing). Many of their songs were outstanding compositions with terrific arrangements; the performances from everyone are matchless and gutsy. Whether joy, humor, sadness or other emotions colour a given song, they seem to nail it.

They were multi-ethnic, and had a conga player, a flute player, plus a cello player who did a long solo on "My Crystal Spider" that sounds more like Hendrix than most guitar players who have had a go at imitating Jimi.

But their signature sound was really nothing without Nevins' voice. Besides having tons of technique, she was masterful at every tonal nuance of each kind of song she sang, whether using volume swells, biting off words in staccato fashion, or softly breathing a quiet, more soulful ballad. She also commanded great dynamics, being able to go from loud to quiet without any hint of her voice breaking . . . one might think of her as rock's equivalent of Joan Baez.

This of is from an amazing group, the first to perform at Woodstock, a group share bills w/ the major stars of the day, and a group that suffered incredible hardships.They have grown into an amazing talent, w/ more energy,music ability, and strength. This album caught Nancy Nevins, and Sweetwater at their very best, performing old favorites such as "My Crystal Spider", and Just For You. This is a must have for Sweetwater fans!

Following the release of CHILDREN OF THE WORLD,the Bee Gees went on tour and recorded this album at the Forum in Los Angeles on December 20,1976. MAIN COURSE,COTW's predecessor was still a hot-selling album. This was the era of disco and those two albums are "jive-talkers". The songs from MC and COTW sound very much the same on this album except the tempo is a bit faster. They also deliver a variety of their Atco Records tunes(those originally recorded on that label) such as NEW YORK MINING DISASTER 1941,LONELY DAYS,HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART,TO LOVE SOMEBODY and a medley of others. Joining the band is their employed brass ensemble The Boneroo Horns who had worked on COTW. The brass band should have worked on this album's 1997 sequel ONE NIGHT ONLY. Many songs on this album also appeard on ONO. After this album,the Bee Gees would jumpstart their now-deceased brother Andy Gibb's short,but memorable career. Because this album was recorded on 12/20,the band wished their audience a Merry Christmas. A must for all Bee Gees fans.

A Must-have!.......2003-12-21

I had just seen the Bee Gees in concert on their Spirits Having Flown tour in 1979 when I first heard this album. At the show, the thing that struck me most were the sweet harmonies. I haven't heard anything that sweet before or since. When I heard this ablum I was so glad there was a recording that captured their harmonies sweet and live. From the ending chord change on Massachusetts to Love So Right, Nights on Broadway, this is truly the Bee Gees at their best. No Bee Gees fan should be without this record, and even if you don't like them all that much, if you like music at all you should still check this out.

Unfortunately, this album went out of print. But I lucked out (thanks to Amazon.com), and got a used one.

It's too bad because this album rocks! Never really heard the Bee Gees live before, until this album. Excellent album.

I think whoever is in charge of releasing material, put this album back on the market.

It is awesome!

Every song is a highlight, with CD 2 being the ultimate highlight.
