Product Description
While The Rankin Family may have spurred the interest in Celtic music in Canada, Great Big Sea were the ones to really take the style and run with it, bringing it to a younger audience that previously regarded it as a style more suitable for fishermen and grandparents. This self-titled debut is the most traditional of the group's albums, both earnest and upbeat. Warner Music Canada. 1993.

Since they emerged in the early 90s, Newfoundland's own Great Big Sea have gradually consolidated a reputation as one of the greatest neo-Celt bands, from anywhere in the Six Nations or, as in this case, beyond. Drawing upon their homeland's strong Irish and Scottish ancestry and centuries-old seafaring heritage, they have fashioned a roistering, danceable sound and a live presence not unlike a bar-band but operating on a massive scale. But for all their good-time, party-hearty extroversion, they also demonstrate a rare affinity for love songs and more introspective types of material. Recorded in spectacular sound before adoring audiences, this "kitchen party," as one band member described it, is at once intimate and grand, folkloric and modern, acoustic and electric. Traditional instruments like fiddle, tin whistle, accordion are fused seamlessly with electric guitars and trap drums, plus tight and charismatic lead and harmony vocals, creating a spiraling energy that takes the crowd by storm and hurtles from living room speakers like a conquering wave. The CD is accompanied by a must-have DVD, which not only includes 26 tracks of concert footage but four essential music videos, one of which, "Lukey," features a collaboration with the Chieftains. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
They sound tired.......2007-07-23
This one is just disappointing. I absolutely love GBS but this offering is not up to snuff. They sound raspy, worn-out and tired. This is evident by Alan's changing several melodic lines to avoid signing high. The energy of both the band and the crowd are not near as high as in the Great Big DVD. This is nice to have the more recent songs, but I wish it would've been a better performance.
Nonetheless, an average performance by this band is still better than most bands playing today.
WONDERFUL GOOD!!!!!!.......2007-07-04
I will admit that I was a bit slow in learning of this excellent group and discovered them quite by accident. I love Celtic music and had recently heard them singing Capt. Kidd on Pandora. I went straight to Amazon and ordered Courage & Patience & Grit. It not only has 20 something songs on the CD, but extra tracks on the DVD portion for the live concert. These guys, Sean, Alan & Bob, are not only extremely musically talented but smart, witty and funny as well. VERY well worth every penny!!!!! I plan on buying more of their product!!!!!
Different, though enjoyable.......2007-05-24
To be honest, they have added a little weight, lost a little pep and seem to be focusing on a little older crowd. These are all just little perceptions that a long time fan would pick up. Some of the songs are done very well, some not so well. I loved Gideon Brown (which is not on the Hard & The Easy CD) but other favorites came off a little flat. I missed Tickle Cove Pond, which I thought would be included surely. Coupled to these disappointments is the fact that Sean seemed to make comments bordering on inappropriate for youngsters during the video performance. Did I enjoy it, yes. As much as the Great Big DVD? No. Their performances in that video may not ever be matched. The music on the Hard & The Easy CD is EXCELLENT and I must suggest you get that CD coupled with this 2 disc set to experience it completely. Great Big Sea is always able to provide truly amazing value with their releases. A video DVD and CD are included in quite a few releases and I look forward to the next one. In summary, this was a good addition but not quite up to par with past presentations.
Courage & Patience & Grit - Great Big Sea In Concert [CD/DVD Combo].......2007-04-12
Good Canadian-Irish group with a distinctive flair for regional music and traditional Irish music. The CD is good, the DVD is better. You get a much better feel for the group and the music by watching it first.

A band that has made a name for itself since 1992 by updating the Celtic and, more specifically, Cape Breton tradition, Great Big Sea has long mixed poppy original tunes with traditionals goosed up to fit a more modern aesthetic. On the band's eighth album, The Hard And The Easy, the Canadians focus wholly on traditional Newfoundland folk tunes of all shapes and colors. All the music is acoustic and most (surprise!) have a seafaring theme to them. These are tunes that band-members grew up playing at home with family and friends, and there is no pretension or airs. The band¹s sense of humor comes through on gems like country-ish "Concerning Charlie Horse" and "The Mermaid," while "Graceful & Charming" is a sentimental ballad. The Breton tradition comes through strongest on "Harbour Le Cou" and "Tishialuk Girls Set." Adding its musicianship and excellent vocals to the Celtic continuum, Great Big Sea has come up with one for and of the ages. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
Includes bonus DVD -- an exclusive concert and conversation with the band!
The Hard and The Easy is the ninth album from Great Big Sea, the Juno-nominated band that fuses Newfoundland traditional music with modern pop in a crowd-pleasing formula both heartfelt and vital. A pure force of nature - much like the ocean surge they take their name from - Great Big Sea's blend of instruments such as guitar, mandolin, bodhran, fiddle, and concertina, along with their vocal harmonies, revels in the melodies they create and the Newfoundland tunes they love. Their sound bellows joy. After almost thirteen years together, Great Big Sea is releasing a new kind of album, one that spans the spectrum of the Newfoundland songbook. This all-acoustic album of traditional and local songs is a first for singers and multi-instrumentalists Sean McCann, Alan Doyle, and Bob Hallett, but it's also a logical progression. Newfoundland music and Newfoundland culture are both their genesis and their raison d'etre.
Customer Reviews:
Freakin' AWESOME.......2007-04-10
As always, Great Big Sea put out a fantastic record. This CD touches a little more on inland Newfoundland. It speaks of logging, horses falling through ice and river driving, to name a few things. Of course the record is still full of nautical themes, too.
An all-acoustic, all-folky outing (no original material), very enjoyable.......2006-11-04
The normal Great Big Sea album contains both original material written by the band and more traditional (mostly Newfoundland) folk songs. When preparing their latest album, according to interviews at the time, they had so much material they decided to split the album in two - one dedicated more to the new music (which, I guess, became the album "Something Beautiful") and one dedicated to all folk songs. While I like Great Big Sea's original material (at least, some of it!), I usually prefer the traditional stuff, so I was thrilled to have a whole album of it. After having listened to it many times, I am still happy with the album, and would recommend it to anyone interested in the genre of "Canadianised Celtic" music.
For those that know the band and/or know the type of music they play, more description might be necessary. This album is quite low-key relative to their other outings - there are more "Donkey Riding" and "General Taylor" songs (i.e. acoustic or totally instrumentless) than there are "The Night Pat Murphy Died" or "Run Runaway". Perhaps this is the effect of the retirement of bass player Darrel Power from the band - the songs have little lower-end drive. However, it is not missed as the band manages to generate lots of energy when required.
The slower songs are naturally a mix of sentimental (Sweet Forget Me Not, The French Shore) and bittersweet (Tickle Cove Pond, The River Driver), but the best songs on the album are those with some pep and some humour. They include:
"The Old Polina," a song about whaling vessels racing between Ireland and St. John's;
"The Mermaid" where a sailor falls in love with a mermaid but bemoans the fact that her bottom half is a tail
"Concerning Charlie Horse," one of two (!) songs about a horse falling through the ice, where his drunken master and his buddies decide they need to haul him out of the pond and give him a proper burial
"Captain Kidd," which I consider a Nova Scotian song (I grew up near Oak Island, supposedly home of Kidd's buried treasure), rather than a Newfoundlad one, but never mind - about the "misunderstood" pirate who recants his wicked ways just before his execution.
Also included is an hour-long DVD with interviews and "live" performances of all the songs (many in Alan Doyle's living room). These live versions are by no means polished - Alan corrects Sean McCann's erroneous lyrics in one song, and changes the key half-way through in another ("Actually, this is supposed to be in E..."). All-in-all, a very enjoyable, if generally low-key, album from our favourite Newfie band.
Brilliant.......2006-07-28
Brilliant. It is back to the form shown in their early CDs and encapsulated in the "Road Rage Live" album. The track "The Mermaid" is wonderful. The accompanying DVD is excellent. As you can see I am a fan after seeing them live in Glasgow in 2001 with Runrig.
A New Direction For the Boys!.......2006-05-08
I was very much looking forward to this disk because GBS sang many of the songs on their tour this spring. And it is new ground. From the mysterious "12 Apostle" shanty to the bawdy "Mermaid" (which will explain the cover)to the eponymous "Graceful and Charming" (which I swear I have somewhere by Triona ni Dhomnail, but I can't prove it). All acoustic, all pure Newfoundland folk. I hate taking that 1 star away from my hard playing, hard working tundra troubadours. But there's just that little smidgeon of something that is not there, absent the audience and lights.
I'll broke two exceptions: "Captain Kidd", full of energy and exuberance, and "River Driver", a shanty accompanied only by drum (It's done with spooky effectiveness in concert). Pure musical bliss. The rest of the CD is terrific compared to those of mortals, but simply lacks the additional GBS sparkle from their live sets.
If you like Great Big Sea.........2006-03-10
Then you will like this album. I like traditional music, and this CD is nothing but traditional. With my favorite song on it being, "River Driver" which has some really interesting vocal harmony on the chorus.

Great Big Sea's CD Turn includes their now standard mix of uptempo versions of traditional Newfoundland folk songs and folky, pop-inspired original compositions. The band has also stayed true to its successful formula of backing its strong harmony vocals with furiously strummed acoustic guitars augmented by traditional Celtic instruments like fiddle, bouzouki, and tin whistle. But this is more than just a rehash of what has worked before. The band's songwriting continues to get better, and original tunes like "Consequence Free," a heartfelt plea for freedom; "Boston and St. John's," a touching sailor's song of farewell; and "Feel It Turn," which features a refreshingly optimistic view of the world, exhibit a depth of feeling that the group only hinted at on its earlier efforts. Even though Great Big Sea have revealed their sensitive side, it doesn't mean they've gone soft. Traditional selections like the boozy "I'm a Rover" and the saucy riddle song "Captain Wedderburn" prove they haven't completely lost touch with their inner party animals. Turn should keep Great Big Sea's legions of fans happy, while simultaneously attracting new listeners. --Michael Simmons

I had never heard of these guys before i bought this particular album, based on reviews. I was not disappointed. A really cute irish band. Thier lyrics are a lot fun.
Want to hear good music again? BUY A GREAT BIG SEA ALBUM.......2006-02-22
This band is so refreshing. A first-rate musical group putting out fantastically produced albums in a time when American pop music is producing "blahhhh". Just try one album and you'll buy them all! Turn is a great CD and so is Rant and Roar. Five BIG stars!
Turn it up.......2002-12-27
These guys are incredible. One listen and you will be hooked. See them live and you won't be able to turn it off.
Imagine 5000 people singing Newfie folks songs at the top of their lungs and just grooving. Life is good north of the border
Great Big Fun.......2002-05-27
One part Gaelic Storm, one part Waterboys and one part Jimmy Buffett: that's Turn, one of the latest high-energy offerings from Great Big Sea. As usual there's some good hearty Irish cheer, some straight-ahead modern rock and an occasional ballad to make you cry over your Guinness. It's the kind of party where the dance floor is shared by fast dances, slow dances and hyper jigs in equal measure. "Consequence Free" could almost be a pop single, "I'm a Rover" is a pub floor-stomper just waiting to happen, and "Old Brown's Daughter" shows a four-part a-capella tune as harmonic as Queen and as soulful as the Chieftains at their best. I think you get the picture by now.. I'll just add that though there are some sad moments, the overall tone is one of blue skies, sunshine and good times with good friends. Turn up loud and enjoy.
Top notch stuff from GBS.......2001-10-10
I was introduced to GBS by a Canadian friend who had come down to take some tech classes from me. He left this CD on my system one day and I gave it a listen. INSTANTLY hooked. I have every CD they have produced and will buy any that come out.
The vocal harmony on Turn is out of sight as well as the acapella rendition of "Old Brown's Daughter" I LOVE acapella music and wish they would do more
Consequence Free represents an anthem for this age and Boston and Saint John's is a ballad by which most others could be judged.
Highly Reccomended

A Platinum-selling act in their Canadian homeland, Great Big Sea has mined that country's proud Scots/Irish Celtic heritage in a decidedly modern context. Their arrangements are honeycombed with the accordions, bouzoukis, pipes, whistles and fiddles typical of traditional music and nicely handled they are, too. But these come across as afterthoughts amid a powerhouse hit machine featuring robust lead vocals, a booming drum kit, and close-harmony hooks obviously calibrated to induce stadium sing-alongs. The group is a throwback to seventies folk-rockers in that they veer between trad/arr material ("John Barbour") and original tunes ("Helmenthead," which catalogues the conquests of a kiss-and-tell hockey player). In contemporary terms, they occasionally recall singer-songwriter Paul Brady's polished lyrics or the crowd-pleasing barroom roughhousing of Black 47. But ultimately, this is a mainstream band, high-energy and very good at what they do; the question is how they'll play outside their comfort zone. --Christina Roden
Album Description
The multi-Platinum band Great Big Sea has become one of Canada's most popular exports, and with the help of producer Michael Phillip (Barenaked Ladies), they're about to become even more popular with the release of Something Beautiful, their new studio album. From brisk Celtic pop sing-alongs like "Shines Right Through" and "When I Am King" to introspective, brooding laments like "Summer" and "Lucky Me," Something Beautiful is the most accessible Great Big Sea album yet. "Great Big Sea has been more successful than any other contemporary North American band in bringing Anglo-Celtic folk sounds into rock clubs." - Dirty Linen

Their name fits.......2007-07-25
Personally, I call them the "Goofy Newfies", because of their quirky humor and rocked out take on the trads. They're definitely back on their game with this CD. Could have stood a few more traditionals here, but "Something Beautiful" is a very upbeat and listenable CD.
Probably my favorites are "Helmethead" for its wry humor and "Beat the Drum" because it's a wonderful anthem of youth. And isn't "Love" grand? It's definitely more real than most of the syrupy stuff you hear.
A Great Big Treat for fans of melodic folk-rock.......2006-05-06
While some GBS fans may take issue with the lack of traditional Newfoundland music on this disc (compared with other GBS releases), "Something Beautiful" stands on its own merits as a superbly crafted, melodic folk-rock album with not a single clunker on it. I say give the lads their due for showing the versatility of their songwriting and vocal skills on this gem of a release. Outstanding and highly recommended whether you're a traditionalist fan or not. With GBS, no matter what they record, everything shines.
Beautiful but different.......2005-10-11
Having nearly worn out "Rant and Roar", I was really looking forward to this one. It didn't impress me at first blush but has slowly worked it's way into my short list of favorites. If you want Rant and Roar, play it. When you are ready to see what else these guys do well, this one is a great place to start. The title track is a well constructed piece of optimism that you will hear in your head for days, if you can get the rest of the songs to quiet down that long. This is a great album and I wish it had gotten some commercial airplay.
Great writing, vocals, arrangements.......2005-10-07
"Something Beautiful" proves one important point...the guys from GBS are amazing writers of good songs. While they stay true to their roots with a few traditional-type songs, this CD's strength is in its rock/pop songs. Their unending optimism in songs like "When I am King" and, touchingly, in "Something Beautiful" as well as the wonderful silliness of "Helmethead" (which should be required playing at any hockey game played...anywhere) make up the great mix that is this CD. "Sally Ann" just seems like a sweet, silly love song until you hear that it was written about Alan Doyle's one-year-old niece whose attention he was desperate to capture one day. Then it really makes sense. "Let it Go" is a lovely song that basically tells people who have everything to live for and be happy about, to stop whining and get on with life, and the great "Lucky Me" is a man exulting in the fact that he is lucky enough to do what he loves. Wonderful.
Buy this CD...buy all of GBS' music. They are not as well known in the US as they deserve to be and if you ever have a chance to see one of their live shows...GO!
Still love them............2005-01-27
Although this is my least favorite of their cd's to date, I absolutly still love Great Big Sea! The energy in their live performances exceeds any expectations. You cannot go to one of their concerts and have a bad time.
Let it Go and Sally Ann are my personal favorites. None of the songs are bad, it just seems a bit more mainstream than their others.
Don't fret though, they will have a traditional cd out soon enough!

In 1993, a youthful quartet recorded a self-titled, independently produced debut album. They had been playing their own brand of Scots/Irish-influenced folk-rock to increasingly loyal audiences throughout Canada for several years, so there was a pre-existing demand. But it just kept growing! Thus begins the astonishing tale of how an obscure band from Newfoundland gradually evolved into a platinum-selling international phenomenon. Six albums later, their resources have broadened considerably, but the essence of their patented sound was obviously there from the beginning. Strong, tightly harmonized vocals, driving guitars, a profound mastery of Celtic instruments and traditions, plus a gleeful, uninhibited way with a hook were already part of the band¹s arsenal, much as they are today. Each of the 11 tracks has something to offer, but "The Fisherman's Lament," a bitter dirge about the destruction of Newfoundland's fishing industry, remains in the heart and head long after the music stops. --Christina Roden

A promising debut, but only a hint of things to come.......2006-12-22
On the DVD accompanying Great Big Sea's 2005 album "The Hard and the Easy", the Newfounland-based Celtic rockers indicate this self-titled debut is still their favorite album. Perhaps it's that feeling of "it's never as good as the first time." But the fact is, Great Big still had a ways to go when this independent-label disc was released in 1993.
For fans who relish the band's traditional songs--often age-old sea shanties, drinking songs and odes to their homeland--this album is one to treasure. I personally discovered Great Big Sea with their follow-up 1995 album "Up", in which the tradional material is mixed with a handful of upbeat original numbers. Most of their succeeding albums would follow this formula, bringing the band increasing success with each release.
The best parts of the album are GBS's versions of "Drunken Sailor", "I'se the B'y", and the studio version of live favorite "Excursion Around the Bay." If you're new to the band, I'd still recommend getting "Up" first, and mabye the 2002 release "Sea of No Cares."
not bad, first effort.......2004-11-11
GBS's songwiting has not yet reached their full potential, however their political bent and celtic leanings shine through in this effort. A must have for any GBS fan, and a very good album overall.
Fun, enjoyable update of old Celtic trad..........2004-07-19
These Canadian fellas offer an earnest, bouncy mix of upbeat, slightly dorky, soft rock and Celtic-by-way-of-Newfoundland trad, sort of like the Pogues but without all the drunkenness and scary dental work. And, y'know what? It's not bad! There's sort of a relentless, Muppetlike cheerfulness about their debut record which can wear down even the most sniffy and grumpy of traditionalists. And it you're looking for some bright, lightweight pop, this could be a big winner for you. Worth giving a spin.
(PS - This is a reissue of a record originally released in 1993.)

Musicians have been fusing traditional Celtic music with rock & roll since the '60s, but few have done it as successfully as the Canadian band Great Big Sea. Rant and Roar is the band's sixth CD, and it's designed to introduce them to U.S. audiences by presenting the best songs from two of their earlier releases, Up and Play. Unlike most Celtic-rock fusion bands, Great Big Sea eschew electric guitars and synthesizers in favor of acoustic guitars and traditional instruments like bodhran, bouzouki, fiddle, flute, and whistle. But on tracks like "The Old Black Rum," a rousing drinking song in the Dubliners tradition; the moving ballad "General Taylor"; or their cover of R.E.M.'s "End of the World," their instrumental prowess and powerful vocals more than make up for the lack of electric instruments. Not only have Great Big Sea scored hits with previously archaic song forms like sea shanties, drinking tunes, and ballads, they make these old songs rock. --Michael Simmons

Just the tip of the iceberg but a good place to start..........2006-05-20
If you really want to know what these guys are all about...see them live when they come to your area...this is a compilation for the US of their second & third Canadian releases, and is just a taste of what they do. Road Rage, their live CD...or the Great Big DVD & CD is an even better representation of these fun loving Newfoundlanders. I've been to four of their live shows in the Burlington VT area since 2002 and I'm ready to see them again when they come to Lebanon NH in the fall of '06. Live in concert is the way to truly experience these guys. They love what they do and it shows. If you can't get to one of their shows, at the very least, get this and then the live albums, and by all means, keep going till you have them all (there are eight). Alan Doyle, their lead singer, puts it this way: "We're not a band you come to see or hear. Great Big Sea is something you do." Audience participation only gets them going even more, and it's impossible not to get caught up into it. Whoever said they were "annoying and cloying after a few listens" needs to learn how to cut loose and have a great time. These guys are the real deal!

Come in, take off your hat and coat and grab a seat near the fire. Order a pint of 'screech' and relax, the music is about to begin. Welcome to Newfoundland!
'Rant And Roar' is a fun, rollicking CD by the Great Big Sea, four native Newfoundlanders who draw their inspiration and music from a unique and rich cultural heritage. English, Irish, Scottish, French and who knows what else come together with a flair that reminds us all of what the "Old World" was like in simplier times.
Though I'm not a native Newfoundlander I have spent numerous summer's there visiting the maternal side of my family. In my youth I've walked up and down Saint John's fishing docks listening to my Grandfather barter in Portugese with fisherman for the best price on the catch of the day and watched the icebergs float by while standing atop Cabot's Tower on the hillside overlooking Saint John's Harbor. All the pleasant memories of the time I've spent there is embodied in this wonderful music. Come with me to other time, another place and sing the type of songs your Grandparents sang. Songs of love, songs of life, songs for drinking and a dirge or two thrown in for good measure. Just be sure to bring your stomping shoes if you got any!
My Highest Recomendation!!
One of the best........2005-10-11
If you like traditional Irish music that has grown with the times, this is for you. The album moves along at a great pace and there is just enough of Irish tradition to make you feel right at home. Don't try to drive while listening and singing along unless you have your cruise control set!
a fun time with irish type music.......2005-10-07
I am a clogging teacher and bought this CD because I wanted the music to "Jolly Beggarman" which is the hidden track (#14) on the CD. There are other songs I have enjoyed also on the CD such as "Merri-Mac". Fun to listen and dance to.
Excellent Celtic-rock CD.......2005-08-24
This CD is a very nice mix of pop-rock and Celtic music. The upbeat songs are handled so well you can't help but sing along. The musicianship and arrangements are both excellent. GBS's version of "Mari-Mac" is the best I've heard anyone do and they handle REM's "End of the World as We Know It" very well. I've always liked "The Night Pat Murphy Died" and they do a good rousing version here. The only songs that get to me are the two ballads, both of which are a little too sappy for my taste.

Almost as good as being there!.......2007-01-04
Awesome concert video! The Great Big Sea had everyone there that evening involved in every song, the band gives 110%, and every song seems better than the last. Talk about a PARTY ATMOSPHERE! Even though viewers enjoy twenty songs, it is still kind of sad that it all has to come to an end. Outstanding musicianship and Canadian culture!
Great Big Winner!.......2006-03-22
I saw The Great Big Sea, live in concert at their 2005-2006 New Years Eve show in Niagara Falls, Canada. I had never heard of the band until that show, but was excited to buy this cd and feel like I was back at the concert.
This cd is infectious, dance-inducing, fun, and overall just a great cd to listen to. I love their blend of New Foundland and Celtic Folk-Rock music.
A lot of bang for your buck!.......2006-03-06
Great Big Sea is one of those bands that seems to give more than they get. This DVD/cd package is an example of that.
If you haven't seen this band live (and I was fortunate enough to do so) then this will have to do for you. If you have seen this band live, than you probably already have this DVD!
Buy this and you'll get a ton of GBS value including a GREAT DVD concert. All the songs they perform here are good, but their version of General Taylor is amazing. You'll also get an audio cd of the concert.
The crowd is wildly enthusiastic and it almost seems like every member of the audience is singing along with the band word-for-word. (I would guess all their audiences are enthusiastic like that. When I saw them in early 2006 in Potland Oregon, they were brought back for THREE encores at a sold out show on a Monday night!)
There's also a documentary I haven't watched yet, and a text-based timeline of the band.
My recommendation: buy this (and if GBS comes to your area don't let them get away without seeing them.)
What a Gas!.......2006-03-05
Great Big Sea is a band comprised of members from small towns in Newfoundland, Canada. They play a Celtic folk/rock style of music - an interesting blend of traditional with contemporary. They simply can't record a song that doesn't lift you up and make you want to dance and sing along! This live performance CD/DVD is outstanding, and I'm not usually a live performance kind of guy. The guitar and other instrumental work is outstanding, the vocals are strong, melodic and harmonious, the drumming is compelling, and the enthusiasm of these guys is truly infectious. Outstanding.
Check out "Rant and Roar" as well; not live, but will make whatever you're doing fun.
Great Big Sea is Great Big Fun.......2006-02-25
That pretty much says it all. This group is talented, for sure, but more than that, they come across as having achieved that perfect balance between 'wholesome' and 'naughty'...they know how to have a good time, and they make sure their fans have a lot of fun too. The DVD is great -- made me check their touring schedule to see when I could catch them live (April 21, in Northampton, MA). After you've seen the DVD a couple of times, the CD is pretty much the same, except you have to run with the images that are seared on your memory!

Great Big Sea's canny blend of Celtic melodies, acoustic-guitar-driven rhythms, and thrilling vocal harmonies have made them bestselling artists in their native Canada. On Sea of No Cares, they tweak their signature acoustic sound by adding drums, electric guitar, Hammond organ, and even trumpet. But they never stray far from their roots, and even when they crank up the volume on the raucous folk song "The Scolding Wife," the droning electric guitar sounds more like an extra-loud set of bagpipes than a rocker's sonic weapon. Each member of the band contributes to the songwriting, and their output tends to be upbeat in both mood and rhythm, as on the joyous odes to love and friendship "Stumbling In" and "One True Way." As the title song "Sea of No Cares" implies, the music of Great Big Sea is generally positive and sunny. But the inclusion of the old Celtic seafaring ballads act as a reminder that although the sun is shining today, a storm is never far away. --Michael Simmons

True independent music.......2004-08-20
This cd was my first introduction to this wonderful band from Newfoundland Canada. It is a blend of Celtic and independent rock certain to have you singing along and then wanting more. Alan Doyle's voice is strong and passionate. This is a good start to the music of Great Big Sea before moving on to the more contemporary sounds of "*Something Beautiful" or the more traditional sounds of "Rant and Roar".
Great, but overproduced.......2004-01-31
Having waited so long to for the next GBS album, I couldn't wait to put the CD in. Perhaps I had my hopes up too high. (Yes this band does have a tendancy to develop fervor amongst people who have heard them)
The first track, Sea of No Cares sounded so much like any other garage band effort out there. If you've seen a band play at a local club and bought their CD because you got caught up in the moment, then you already know what I mean. That first track sounded, of all things, amateurish and overproduced. Now, this is one of the most polished bands out there, so It came as an affront to me and tainted my view of the rest of the album. This is also the first time they have included a drumset and a drummer. So I guess they were trying to make a point by opening it with a drum solo. But I was not impressed.
There are some absolutely phenomenal songs on this album. My favorite is "Stumbling In" and the CD is worth it just to hear that. Another jems is "Own true Way" and "Clearest Indication" is a song I've lived more than I care to admit. "Penelope" could have been written by Jimmy Buffet. That sounds like a song he should sing. I found it a little out of place and totally out of character for the boys from Newfoundland. And somehow a little patriotic flare shot up at the apparent disparagement of an American city by these Canadians. (I said I was honest...)
GBS continues to be my favorite band because they produce absolutely fabulous, honest, optimistic music. There are some genuine keepers on this album, but if you want a better introduction to them, try Rant and Roar. If you've already been introduced to GBS, then what are you waiting for? Get this CD and you will be happy you did.
Why did I give it only three stars? Because of the albums I have this is about average. Maybe I have nothing but stellar albums in my collection, but that's my honest review. It takes a lot to get five stars out of me. Only one album has so far and, by the way, that album is Rant and Roar.
A CD for every person!.......2003-12-24
GREAT BIG SEA is a mixture of culture and time. Their songs stretch from classic Irish tunes to modern pop music. But, make no mistake, they are great songs.
This CD incorporates the bands talent for music, with today's desire for pop music. Anybody who appreciates music will love this CD! Their smooth melodies and accentual chords make this a CD constant repeat in your CD player, both in the car and at your dinner parties.
This CD represents a more commerical appeal than their previous CD's (PLAY also had commercial appeal). But, once you learn what Great Big Sea is about, you will be in a must have situation for all of their previous CD's. You can forget the bad language, and the hard electric guitars. We are talking about music in a pure form. Lyrics that hit, instrumental collections that support, and most of all, a feeling of.. well, Greatness.
You would be hard set to find a CD that would be able to be put on repeat and not hated after a day. Great Big Sea does that wiht Sea of No Cares. Your friends will instantly be asking you, "Who are they?!?"
Answer: They've been around for over 10 years, and won five (5) awards at the 2003 East Coast Music Awards (Group of the Year, Album of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Video of the Year, and Pop Group of the Year). Those Left Coast people (like me) are missing out!
GREAT BAND, GREAT CD!.......2003-11-18
I really enjoyed this album as well as all of GBS albums. My kids get a kick out of listening the cd. With all of the new music and pop singers out there, it is nice to have a band out there that plays the "good old stuff" with a new twist. Having worked with the band in NYC in 2001, I have to say, they are the nicest group of men out there, and their music shows their personalities. I recomend this album and all of GBS's albums to anyone who enjoys celtic folksongs with a 21st century beat. You won't be disapointed.

Give it a listen? Aye me son!.......2004-08-17
There's a definite pecking order on both sides of the 49th Parallel in North America. Americans poke fun at Canada, calling the country "America's kid brother" and "the 51st State," but who is it the Canadians kick around? Well, that would be the proud inhabitants of the province of Newfoundland. This easternmost province is a geological chunk of Europe connected to North America; the youngest Canadian province which boasts the oldest continuously-functioning city on the continent (St. John's); a place with a time zone offset by half an hour from the rest of Canada. Newfoundland is far enough away from the mainland, both geographically and culturally, that its citizens have become prime targets in the humor wars. "Newfies" have long had to deal with widespread jokes deriding their accents, their lack of sophistication, their intelligence--and to their credit, they mostly do so gracefully. Even so, the widespread belief is that Newfoundland produces only moose meat, canned seal and fish.
Well, I can tell you there's one very worthwhile thing Newfoundland exports, and that's music. The province has given the world such stellar acts as the Celtic Connection, the Irish Descendants and the Ennis Sisters. And of course, there is Great Big Sea--about the most popular band in Newfoundland, topping the charts in Canada and making a respectable name for itself south of the border as well. The secret of their success isn't too hard to decipher: a unique sound inspired by Celtic folk and New World sea shanties, tweaked with modern rock sensibilities. Play, the band's third album, was released in 1997. It's about an equal mix of traditional tunes and original compositions, with one pop cover ("End of the World") done up in unique GBS style.
I'm enough of a folk geek that if I read the liner notes and see instruments like harmonica, bones, button accordion, tin whistle, mandola, concertina, bouzouki and bodhran in addition to the expected bass, violin and acoustic guitar, I start to salivate. GBS' liner notes had me in a Pavlovian frenzy before I played the first note. Better yet, the sound does not disappoint. These aren't your father's lilting Irish tunes--these are passionate a cappella dirges, lusty drinking songs, and shanties performed in a masculine musical roar. And they're utterly catchy. I defy anyone to listen to these songs in the car and not join in on the second chorus.
The opening track, "Ordinary Day," starts out with an SOS call and surges into a strong pop-rock anthem. With its optimistic lyrics and shanty-inspired chorus of "way-hey-hey it's just an ordinary day, and it's all your state of mind," this is one of the best original tunes on the album. Other standouts include "The Night Pat Murphy Died," a fun tune about an irreverent Irish wake; "General Taylor," a hearty dirge mocking an American turncoat in the Mexican-American war; "Recruiting Sargeant" (sic), a song about the true cost of war; and "Jolly Roving Tar," a shanty bemoaning the treatment of Jack Tars everywhere ("But when the money's gone, it's the same old song: Get up, Jack! John, sit down!")
The only complaint I have with this album is the slightly uneven quality of the songs. The GBS version of R.E.M.'s "End of the World" is fun, but works primarily as a novelty. While the original tunes have a tendency to grow on you after repeated listenings, they tend toward the more melancholy end of the emotional spectrum and lack some of the fire found in the traditional arrangements. Even so, they're better than 90% of the boy-band tripe you'll hear on the radio.
It's impossible to get across in words the sound of a recording, which is one reason why I don't often review music albums although I have a massive collection of CDs. About the best I can do is to compare Great Big Sea to other artists--another difficulty, since they aren't easily comparable. Maybe an aggressive, cheerfully drunk version of Silly Wizard? Loreena McKennitt's backup band with vocals by the Barenaked Ladies? Neither seems too accurate. Perhaps it's best just to listen for yourself.
Unlike purchasing canned seal meat, you won't be sorry later.

Two! Four! Out the door!!.......2004-03-05
This was my first taste of GBS and at first listen it was WOW! This was the most interesting, enjoyable and fun recording released in 1997! They do a great job with Oysterband's "When I'm Up" and the tradtionals are exquisite! Take a listen to the glorious a cappella harmonies on "General Taylor"! There's the fun, hearty "The Night Pat Murphy Died" as well! It would be surprising if they didn't have fun making this album!
WOW.......2003-11-28
I love this CD. I've had it since it came out. It's GREAT!
"Play" this!.......2003-02-13
I can't give kudos enough to Great Big Sea, which is probably the best blend of contemporary and traditional music out there. They're a band from Newfoundland who blend the traditional instruments and drinking songs with incredibly catchy music.
Their music tends to vary a lot, much like the similar band "Rawlins Cross," but they seem to take themselves a lot less seriously. There are sad songs such as "How Did We Get from Saying I Love You..." and "My Apology," which seem to fit "Sea" less well than their bouncier tunes. One of those is the hilariously irreverant "Night Pat Murphy Died," about a bunch of guys who honor their dead friend by getting sozzled, and which contains the lyrics "... we went up to the graveyard/so holy and sublime/found out when we got there/we'd left the corpse behind!" They do a cover of REM's "End of the World" which was so good that I originally thought it was their own song; also there are the delightfully danceable "Rigadoon," "Ordinary Day," or "Jolly Roving Tar." A few aren't as danceable, but still very catchy, like the mostly musicless "General Taylor" or the rhythmic "Donkey Riding."
This Celtic-rock band is probably one of the best out there; you can almost imagine these guys dancing and singing as you listen. Check out this and other albums by Great Big Sea, and don't feel ashamed to sing along. I do it whenever I listen.
Way...Hey...And Away We Go!!!.......2002-12-06
This is about as perfect a CD as you can ask for from arguably the greatest band on Earth. Their music is fun and infectious and beyond any sort of label. It will make you sing at the top of your lungs and dance until you fall down. I have never heard anything like these guys before. Every time I play this at my house with visitors present, they want to know who the band is and where they can get a copy of the music. It is THAT good.
The reason I recommend this CD over "Rant and Roar" which was their first U.S. release that contains many of the same songs (and is a bit cheaper) is because the songs that didn't make it on the former album are every bit a good as the ones that did. If you only have "Rant" and have enjoyed killer tunes like "Ordinary Day," "The Night Pat Murphy Died," and a cover of R.E.M.'s "End of the World," you are seriously missing gems like "Donkey Riding" and "Jolly Roaving Tar." There are ten tracks on this CD that didn't make it to the U.S. in their original form (there are a few on the live CD "Road Rage" which is also spectacular). Trust me, you must own "Play."
I cannot praise these guys enough. I wish they got the full recognition they deserved over other bands that are twice as popular and half as good. If you like rock, folk, international, traditional Irish music or anything in between, you will NOT be disappointed by this CD. You have never heard anything like these guys before. Honest!

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.
