The ongoing collaboration between composer Mychael Danna and film director Atom Egoyan has yielded numerous soundtrack gems, but Ararat ranks among their very best. Egoyan's complex film-within-a-film revolves around the Armenian genocide of 1915. Not surprisingly, regional folk instruments and choral singing play a dramatic role on this effort. Danna and Egoyan recorded much of the Armenian music on location, in a sixth-century stone church with no electricity, but it blends in perfectly with the composer's more sophisticated orchestral arrangements. This is dark, moody, and minor-keyed (not to mention gorgeous) music. By focusing on the plaintive sounds of a solo trumpet or duduk (Armenian flute) and the occasional choral track, Danna has created a truly haunting and mysterious score. Mychael Danna has done it again!.......2007-05-01

Mychael Danna is one of my most favorite composers. Whatever he touches, turns to gold. He can take any ethnicity of music and create pieces that make your soul ache. Kudos to Danna and Egoyan for their collaboration on this amazing soundtrack.

If you like this type of music, you might also like another artist who plays the duduk, Djivan Gasparyan.

One of the best film scores to come out in a long time........2004-09-23

The score for "Ararat" is one of the better film scores to come out in several years. While some of it definately "sounds like movie music," a lot of it is original sounding and could easily make the leap to the concert platform with a few tweaks (or if you got some Armenian folk musicians to sit in!)

Composer Mychael Danna incorporated Armenian folk & sacred music into the more traditional score for western orchestra. The results are absolutely spellbinding. The duduk (somewhat similar to an oboe, but that's just to give an idea) and the kanune combine well with orchestra, and at times take on a "concerto-like" relationship to the orchestra.

Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian's voice is spellbinding (her solo CDs are also amazing and worth picking up.) At times, her voice, combined with Danna's music make it hard to choke back the tears. The music is just that powerful in places.

Most of the music is somber, yet hopeful...but one would expect somber music from a movie dealing with such a tough subject.

A comment to the composer.......2003-12-09

I'd like to say that the movie is very contemporary movie and so is the soundtrack. I rate this movie as the best movie for me!
Unfortunately I saw a mistake made by Amazon.com which has shown the composer of Groonk as Mychael Danna. I'd like to announce that the composer of Groonk or Krounk which in armenian means a Bird is composed by Komitas, Danna has just impovized the music, which is also very great work. Groonk, originaly writen by Komitas, is about an armenian immigrant who asks the Groonk, the bird, about his mother land, his country, which he has not seen for a while and where he can't be anymore.
Anyway, I'd recommend you to listen this works, they speak of a nation that has lost its mother land.

Music bursting with emotions, Reminisence of The Gladiator.......2003-05-12

Spectacular ! There are two reasons why I will recommend this CD. First, as it is related to my heritage, Armenian, this soundtrack does a wonderful job of representing Ararat, a movie about how Armenian Genocide performed by Turks affected an Armenian family whose members are trying to come to terms with their painful past in their own ways. The music is so emotional and passionate that it almost tells a story by itself, it's hard not be captured by it.

Those of you who are fond of the legendary movie The Gladiator and its music will appreciate this CD as it has the same instrument (it's called duduk) that makes the wind voice and shares certain characteristics. Also, there are other instruments that orchestral and convential of Armenian heritage, all of which are quite soothing.
If you loved the Gladiator music, you'll love this too !

Heck Yeah.......2002-03-21

These guys are very hard to find, but well worth it. Sublime bassist Eric Wilson is just the man. This album displays quality musical talent with a bizzare sense of humor. Why these guys arent big already Ill never know.

Wild & crazy FUN at the Dragstrip!.......2001-03-29

I guess it takes a lot of guts for a band to grace themselves with a name like DEL NOAH & THE MT. ARARAT FINKS. Nominally a "surfing" band but more accurately in the "hot rod music" vein. In fact, their exact obsession is with dragstrips! With a mix of instros and vocals, they ramble freely from rock & roll to outright "novelty" tunes. Check out "Danger Island" (sure to bring back memories of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour) or "Amish Drag Buggy". Stuff like this puts them square in Spike Jones, Stan Freberg or Weird Al territory. At the same time, the wild sax and vocals on some songs remind me a LOT of The Fleshtones-- what could be cooler? Anyone besides me think "pop" music takes itself too seriously these days? HERE's an antidote! (Even cover artist SHAG seems to be having more "fun" than usual.)

For more dangerous skids into the realm or "looney" tunes, check out the 7" ep THE BIG SOUNDS OF DEL NOAH & THE MT.
