Beatlesy pop-rock gem from a brilliant songwriter.......2006-03-24
Susie Hug re-emerges full grown and shouting a war cry, like Athena from Zeus' head, in this impressive and wide-ranging solo album, her first full-length effort since the breakup of her old band, the superb and much-missed Katydids. Four decades after rock-pop's pioneers sowed the field, a fresh flower like "A Is for Album" springs from exhausted earth, bearing with it the echoes of those lost golden years. Hug's songwriting has always channeled the ghosts of her influences while remaining wholly original, and so the songs on this collection sound both familiar and unique at the same time. Brisk backing generously donated by the Scottish band Travis provides the sheen and Hug's expressive vocals weave in and out of a rich tapestry of guitars, keyboards, and percussion. "Green to Gold" starts the LP on a strong Lennon-McCartney note, a lilting, reflective ode to autumn, followed swiftly by the raga-rock drone of "August Moon," the slow-building ballad "Submarine," and then the powerful "Fable," a should-be hit single in a world that rewarded smart songcraft. This is vintage Susie Hug/Katydids -- a punchy, hook-laden rhythm track, insistent guitar riff, double-tracked, commanding lead vocal, warm harmonies, elliptical lyrics (name -checking Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood!) that tell a complete story in miniature, like a perfect pop haiku. Three minutes of driving rock and roll brilliance.
Other treasures abound, from the bouncy "Animal Friends" to the catchy, chiming "Unbelievers" to the crashing neo-psychedelic "Amazed." "Reason" sees Hug singing partly in Japanese over a dancing piano line, and the world-weary "Party Girls" slips into sad country-western waltz time. The album loses a little steam toward the end, with "Evergreen" and "Needles and Pins" both quiet, slow-tempo mood sketches that see Hug's voice cracking under the strain of expressing the full emotion of the moment. Certain places in the album seem to beg for a fuller or more careful production; another layer of vocal harmonies here or an instrumental flourish there, and while Travis is unmistakably a first-rate band Adam Seymour's always tasteful and melodic guitar fills and backing vocals from the Katydids are missed here. (Seymour was snatched up quick by Chrissie Hynde for the Pretenders, which shows you how musically strong the Katydids lineup was.) But these are minor quibbles, byproducts of unavoidably limited resources. Hug's return to the public eye is an occasion for rejoicing, and this album promises, I trust, an alphabet's worth of creativity to follow and be shared. Lucky us.
