Brilliant music by great musicians.......2007-05-09
I got this for my mother for her birthday, and she was thrilled. I listened to it with her, and it's simply delicious music. I recommend this to everyone who enjoys the guitar, Spanish music, and classical music.
The Royal Family of Spanish Guitar.......2007-05-07
Superb. There is just nothing more to say.
Spanish classical guitar.......2007-04-23
If you are in the mood for some beautiful Spanish guitar music than this disc will fill that void. The Romeros have been recording elegant music for years as the gift of guitar playing has been passed down generations. What is especially nice about this disc is that it features a variety of composers major works. The Romeros interpret Issac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, Federico Torroba, Villa-Lobos and Bach amongst many others. Curiously enough, the works of Rodrigo are misssing. To avoid confusion in your buying this disc it is important to note that all the Romeros do not play guitar together on this disc. There is the occasional duet and group performance on guitar but for the most part these are individual solos. The solo guitar of each Romero is enough to capture your attention but it is important to note that Celedonio Romero dominates this disc. The inclosed booklet is very informative and educational regarding the history of each composition; it is nice reading material while you are listening to these early music time pieces. Although the individual pieces are composed by different people there is a flow to the music. This is great music to relax the mind to , perfect for reading or participating in some quite endevor. Recommended for Spanish classical guitar aficionados.
Sumptuous performances!.......2006-03-16
Since their early years this curious ensemble has detached due their impeccable phrasing, sublime expression and admirable phrasing. (We should remind the case of the Abreu brothers in the Seventies as other emblematic example of familiar ensembles) This special circumstance has allowed them to achieve a very high place in guitar' s world.
Their elegant refinement is not wrangled with the sensitive and required mood. They have maintained the perfect balance, becoming an obligated reference every time they release a new album in the market.
His Rodrigo's performances possess that verve so characteristic of the great interpreters. Listening pieces as Madrigal Concerto, the original Concerto for three guitars and the unbeatable performance of Fandango.
This album contains some of the most representative miniaturist pieces of the Spanish repertoire.
So please, don' t think it over and acquire this album that will reward you every time you listen it.

The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10
This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.
Classic Latin American tunes beautifully sung and produced,.......1998-12-11
Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. I have listenned to this CD countless times over the past two years and it remains a delight.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17
If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.
Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18
Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.
A treasury.......2005-11-06
As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'
Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26
This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

Fine CD ,Lame DVD.......2007-01-28
I thought the sound quality on the cd was fine. But if you're buying this for the Concerto on the DVD you should know that half the time you won't be seeing the concerto. Yes, while the musicians play you will frequently be shown statues, fountains, gardens and other pretty images that have nothing to do with the music and take up way too much time on screen. That kind of thing might fine on a tourism video which you might or might not watch once, but watching the concerto performance would have been far more interesting.
Great playing but recording is a bit weak.......2006-08-18
The Rodrigo Collection is a compilation of Rodrigo guitar concerti recordings from 1975 to 1979. The guitar playing is robust, aggressive and macho, but not nearly as sensitive and deep as efforts by Pepe and Angel during the last decade. Twenty some years of practice and performing makes a big difference!
Although the recording quality is decent, it is not nearly as full bodied as modern digital recordings by the Romero brothers. The midrange is thin and slightly bright and stereo imaging flat. It's not a great digitalization and remix of an analog recording. Lastly, the "Shadows and Light DVD" transfer from analog tape to DVD is terrible. If I didn't know I had put a DVD in the player I'd swear it was an old low rez video tape. Despite these warts, it's a must have for any diehard Rodrigo or Romero fan.

The Rodrigo Collection.......2005-10-19
Here is a delightful combination CD and DVD with some of Rodrigo's most famous and lovely music. The DVD is especially touching and I got a new perspective on this unique composer and his music.
Great multimedia.......2005-09-13
The first CD is very good, the sound of the concerts is great, but the DVD is another thing, it's great to see Pepe Romero in the Aranjuez Concert and the documentary about the late great master Joaquín Rodrigo touch me very deeply.
My only regret it's that you can only hear the Aranjuez Concert if you play the DVD and not in a CD player (car for example)

mellow music.......2007-05-12
This cd has a lovely classic guitar sound. I only gave it 4 stars because I expected a more lively cd (you know the kind of fast fingering classical guitar?). Don't get me wrong - the music is REALLY nice, it's just a much slower and mellower fingering than I was anticipating.
Phasing is awkward.......2004-05-14
I agree with the review from "A music Fan" who said Angel's phasing is awkward. I was able to listen to this at a store and totally agree that Angel's phasing is awkward and unnatural. For instance, Adelita sounds stiff and brittle, very unsatisfying.
Unbelievable technique, unorthodox phrasing.......2003-11-21
As my title states, Angel Romero's technique is very clean and precise. His dynamic range is huge. This set of pieces in itself is a documentation of his versatility as an artist; combining pieces of pure burn (Allard) with simple (Tarrega miniatures) and artful soundscapes (Torroba, Albeniz). However, the phrasing is often very akward. I don't understand why someone with so much musical background and technique, coming from a family that practically educated the instrument on musicality, would phrase music so irrationally. For instance, listen to Angel's Estudio Brillante. The phrasing sounds like the fingering. Any master violinist or pianist playing this piece would not phrase the scale and arpeggio phrases in the way Romero does on this recording. Otherwise, the album is basically a greatist hits CD with some formidably played but non-essential renditions of the pieces all classical guitar masters play.

A Gem.......2006-06-27
I bought this album at Best Buy years ago because of the interesting art on the cover. I popped it in the CD player and was entranced by the sound, the beauty of the pieces. As a guitarist, I was awed by the technical fluency and Craig's ability to create whispers and storms on his instrument. This is a wonderful introduction to a guitarist or music-lover to Spanish and South American pieces of elegance and wonder.
Hidden Treasure .......2006-06-07
This showed up in my Amazon recommendations list. Although I had never heard of Craig Alden Dell, I gave it a shot and am very glad I did!
His credentials are impeccable. According to the liner notes: "Craig Alden Dell, a 35 year veteran of the guitar has studied and performed in the styles of Classical, Flamenco, and Impressionistic, as well as Folk, Ethnic and Progressive guitar. Having studied formally in the Terrega School he is a graduate of the Escuela Razonada de la Guitarra at the University of Barcelona, under the direction of Maestro Emilio Pujol and his assistant, Hector Garcia. In the Classic style he also studies guitar from Christopher Parkening and received personal career guidance from Maestro Segovia on an occasion to have met with him in the late sixties. Craig studied flamenco guitar from El Saraste and has also performed for and studied technique from the legendary Sabicas."
The CD contains some brilliant performances of classical Latin guitar pieces that you don't find in every collection.
Very beautiful! Grab it while you can.
Undiscovered virtuoso? You decide . . ........2001-10-13
I met Craig Alden Dell in the summer of 1999 when he was selling his CDs out of the back of his car at a flea market in Northern New Mexico. I bought "Spirits of the Latin Guitar" then, and it's occupied an honored and well-played space in our disc changer ever since. Dell's interpretations of classics by Granados, Tarrega and others are infused with a soul that only a skilled and loving hand can bring to the classic guitar. They recall a cool autumn evening in the Jemez Mountains - alive with the aroma of a pinon fire and the enchanted New Mexico sky.

Album Description
1994 GRAMMY WINNER! Recorded live during the Consort's triumphant tour of Spain, the band is at its most dynamic, playing to fervent audiences in the vibrant acoustics of classical old Spanish opera houses and concert halls.
Customer Reviews:
Richly atmospheric........2002-05-23
This album represents a number of Paul Winter Consort milestones. It is the first - and so far the only - album recorded while the Consort was on tour, throughout Spain in 1992. It was the first Grammy-winning album for the Consort. And, perhaps most important of all, it was the farewell album for Rhonda Larson, the long-time flautist with the Consort. And what a send-off it was!
Two of the tracks were written for, and feature, Ms. Larson: "Montana," depicting the mountain meadows of her birthplace, and "Fare Well," as a send-off tribute for the start of her solo career. That she is a brilliant instrumentalist is without question. (Her major post-Consort album - "Free As A Bird" - can be found elsewhere at Amazon.com. If "Spanish Angel" whets your appetite for more of Ms. Larson, there is no better place to start. Then you can begin to think about where that famous bearded Irish leprechaun, doing business as Sir James Galway, fits into repertoire such as this [and discover that he may well have met his match].)
Eugene Friesen and Paul Halley have raised cello/piano "duo" improvisation to a high art. "Almería Duet" is one of the very best of their joint efforts. One can only marvel at the psychic connection that must be required for this type of improvisation to work, and work it does: Eugene really smokes on this track! (I find it interesting that, years later, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor were to travel down a similar path. For those who have had the pleasure of listening to Meyer's "First Impressions" on their best-selling Appalachia Waltz album, this connection will be almost immediately obvious. And, to this fan of both Friesen and Meyer, seemingly a nice tribute from Edgar to Eugene.)
The lead-in above refers to "Music for a Sunday Night in Salamanca" (one of the tour venues in Spain), and, for me, the highlight of the album. It is indeed richly atmospheric, with the sense of aromatically perfumed air at dusk. The locale-capturing timbres that the Paul Winter Consort manages to coax out of what is in reality a small group of musicians have seldom been realized to such good effect as they are here.
I save the best for last, as has Mr. Winter. "Blues for Cádiz" can only be described as a lusty gas! All in all, an unforgettable Rhonda send-off. I'm laughing as I write this. You will too as you listen to it.

Customer Reviews:
A gem from a master.......2005-10-15
On this records, Placido Domingo achieve one of the most refined homages to his musical roots, the zarzuela. He, having touched -and make us touch- some of the highest points of opera, put all his art and heart on the fourteen tracks of this CD. Pure art from a music not so well know outside the spanish-influenced word. A milestone.
Best zarzuelas.......2002-02-09
The best zaruela collection I have ever heard. I recommend it to all great music lovers.
Placido Domingo at his most sublime romantic performance........1999-06-27
This is a most to have, if you enjoy Placido Domingo's voice. Placido in this recording brings and interprets with great musicship the beauty of Zarzulas (Spanish light operas), to the world to enjoy. Placido Domingo is truly, the most perfessional tenor and conducter, of not just of our time, but perhaps ever! Bravo Maestro, que Vivas!
