Terrific for harp and asian/water sound lovers.......2005-08-30
This is the first harp-intensive CD I have bought, purchased after hearing selections from it on my classical music station, WGMS. Its even better than I expected. I love this CD! It is a great combination of familiar music by Debussy and other selections reminiscent of the flow and play of water, some with an wonderful asian flavor. This product would be great for soft mood music, background sound for an intimate dinner, etc. If you want or need only one harp CD, make this the one!!!
my new Kondonassis favorite.......2005-07-16
I needed a new CD player for my new relax space...Because this CD is my new "must have /required/ part of relax time".....the title "fits"...
SUBMERGE YOURSELF!!!.......2003-07-15
Tapping into the "mythological mystique" of the harp, and having "been mesmerized by water" since she "was a little girl," Yolanda Kondonassis compels our attention and praise with her atmospheric and flowing recital of "liquid thoughts," the aim of which is to musically combine and conceptualize conscious and subconscious images of brooks, rivers, oceans and imaginary universes of water. Drawing on a diverse collection of composers--- from Debussy [1862-1918] and Marcel Tournier [1879-1951] through the lesser known Michio Miyagi [1894-1956] and Alphonse Hasselmans [1845-1912] to George Rochberg [b.1918], whose own surprisingly luminous work, "Ukiyo-E," from the Japanese "Pictures of the Floating World," and, evocatively enough, the apt title of the CD is, at nearly thirteen minutes, the longest composition--- Kondonassis graces us. Her playing is subtle, caressing, fabulously impressionistic, and never less than convincing in establishing an inspired, other-worldly ambience. As well, with her own mysterious and memorable piece, "Liquid Shadows," she delves even further into moody fantasy. Due to the extraordinary ability of the harp to easily transport us to the most pleasurable of aural places, the enveloped listener is simply a captive audience, especially when the works are as remarkably meditative, reflective and soothing as they are here.

Wow!.......2002-05-22
This is really a fantastically beautiful sounding CD. It is so dignified and spacey at the same time. The selections are extremely eclectic....a little Debussy...a little koto music....an orginal piece..but it all fits together and sounds very natural. If you are interested in something to listen to with the lights turned low, I don't think you can go wrong here.
hauntingly beautiful harp music.......1998-12-11
This is the most hauntingly, surreal, beautiful harp recording I have ever heard. I use it in my massage therapy practice all the time. Just perfect for relaxing to!!

Shadowy and Reflective.......2006-02-22
Geoff Downes is of course best known for his work as keyboardist and guiding light of the melodic rock combo Asia, as well as serving a tour of duty with art rock pioneers Yes on one of their finest moments, 1980's 'DRAMA'. He's also done a number of solo projects under the moniker of The NEW DANCE ORCHESTRA, all of which have been somewhat different from each other. His first, THE LIGHT PROGRAM(1987) was an electronic symphony similar to some of Tangerine Dream's more upbeat material from the same time period(Poland, Optical Race). That album set the standard for the NDO releases that followed, though never truely matched. The next, VOX HUMANA(1992), concentrated on vocal material by utilizing different singers, while 1996's EVOLUTION was pretty much an electronic easy listening album of covers, pleasant but standard fare. THE WORK TAPES(1998) were demos with soulful rock belter Glen Hughes which never were further developed, while THE WORLD SERVICE(2000) continued in an instrumental direction again like The LIGHT PROGRAM, only this time done up in short snippets(over 20 tracks). Which brings us to SHADOWS & REFLECTIONS(2003).
This time, Geoff has provided an ambient disc of dreamy instrumentals which drift in an improvised stream of conscienceness. The spirit of 'The Light Program', probably most fans' favorite of Downes solo efforts, is evident here on 'SHADOWS...', more so than on 'WORLD SERVICE', though this time, rather than short snippets, there are only two lengthy instrumentals which float and drift throughout. Being mostly improvised, the material meanders quite a bit, but the resulting sound is more organic and unfolding. So, this isn't cold and sterile electronic space-out music- there is actually a warm and quite 'human' element to it, as if Geoff just let the recording roll and let himself drift away with the music as easily as the listener will. With the 'human element' intact, there is bound to be mistakes, such as a space between two sections, and an unnecessary 'cowbell' for a couple beats. Yet they don't detract from the overall performance or continuity. To be able to pull off a semi-improvised performance in such a manner is rare, and attributed to Geoff's overall professionalism. A similar release would have been Patrick Moraz' FUTURE MEMORIES, sadly out of print. Both tracks almost reach a half hour each and go through many moods and atmospheres, truely panoramic music.
This is fine electronic music from someone not afraid to play synthesizers and push the envelope with their potential. Great music to relax and drift away to, and great music to take with you on a drive at three in the morning. If you have LIGHT PROGRAM, then this should be your next Downes solo disc.
Geoff's Best!.......2003-06-19
Very glad that I purchased this CD. Geoff's new disc is excellent electronic music that is in a similar vein as Patrick O'Hearn's stuff. It takes you on a colorful and interesting journey through cerebral places. I like this the best of all his solo work. On the next disc I would love to see him mix this with his Asia-type work, maybe add a powerful drummer (Simon Phillips, Mike Portnoy or Dennis Chambers type), an atmospheric guitarist and even a track or two with some interesting vocals and lyrics (a continuation of the last Asia CD "Aura"). But this CD struck me right away as being a very intelligent and emotionally pure piece of art. If you liked "The Light Program" you will most likely appreciate this. It is great! Thanks Geoff!

Customer Reviews:
Lively ambient/electronic music from Asia's GEOFF DOWNES.......2003-11-12
"Shadows & Reflections" is the fifth solo release from reknowned British keyboardist Geoff Downes, best known for his brilliant synth work with progressive rock legends YES (where he replaced no less than Rick Wakeman), and later, with chart-topping rock supergroup ASIA. Geoff is rightly considered to be the guiding light of Asia, and he has brilliantly lead the band from it's "pop supergroup" beginnings, to the more progressive/expansive sound that they have crafted more recently through Geoff's partnership with vocalist/bassist/songwriter John Payne. While Downes solo career has covered a wide variety of styles (instrumental new age, vocal pop, classic rock covers), the music represented on "Shadows & Reflections" finds him returning to the progressive/electronic style of his first solo album, "The Light Program". Although one difference (as the liner notes duly point out) is that this album takes on a more "stream of conscienceness"/improvised approach than "The Light Program", with Downes basically recording & composing live as the tracks unvieled themselves. Unlike some of Downes other releases, this one is truly a SOLO album - Downes synthesisers are front and center throughout, and no other musicians are featured. "Shadows & Reflections" is not just the title of the album, it is the titles of the two individual epic-length compositions that are featured here, each lasting around the 30 minute mark. The music is what some would call "new age", some would call "ambient", and yet others would call "electronic music" - but Mr. Downes seems to find his own voice within this style, not content to simply mimic Tangerine Dream/Vangelis/Kitaro as some lesser electronic artists tend to do. While the compositions do have a Tangerine Dream-like structure (in the sense that these are extended pieces where the mood shifts and progresses through different melodic sections), Downes playing style (and his unique arsenal of synth sounds) are so recognisable that we never forget who we are listening to. All in all, this is a highly recommended release that displays a different side of one of rock's premier keyboardists . If you are an Asia fan who is looking into Geoff's solo work for the first time, then this is a great place to start (you may even recognize a few of the distinctive synth sounds that have been heard on Asia's albums "Arena" & "Aura"!). If you are a progressive rock fan, then this represents some of Downes most experimental & expansive work...Happy listening!
