The National make sturdy American music, the sort of stuff that's built out of solid songs, radio-ready hooks, and tasteful, efficient arrangements. The CD's earnest, straight-ahead material is often country-flavored, but it can also evoke '80's rock anthems. Matt Berninger sings of the heart's travails in a sensitive, manly way that recalls fellow romantics like Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. He's equally adept at packing a slew of words into a single vocal phrase or milking a single word for dramatic effect. The guitar-bass-drums lineup is nicely abetted by the occasional piano line or synth flourish. There isn't room for surprise or eccentricity on this album; everything here is completely worked out and professionally crafted. But that's one reason this disc will appeal to people with a taste for well-made rock. --Fred Cisterna

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, still really good.......2007-07-08

I already have Alligator, Boxer, and Sad Songs, And this is yet another great addition. I haven't had it very long yet, so some songs are still growing on me, typical of The National. Anyways, Beautiful Head and American Mary are the best songs on here. 29 Years is really good too, Berringer reprised it at the end of "Slow Show" on Boxer. Aside from that, the other songs are good, but not their best. This is a good debut album, and Beautiful Head and American Mary are in my top "The National" Songs. As I've said in other reviews, if you're new to The National, get Alligator, and let it grow on you.

3 out of 5 stars An Honorable Lineage.......2005-06-28

Though they've grown exponentially over the last two releases, The National arrived fully-born on this debut. Vocalist/lyricist Matt Berninger has only honed his sharp and honest voice, but that commitment to detail is all over these 12 tunes. They plumb the Amerindie sound without redefining it; instead, they join an honorable lineage that includes Warren Zevon, Matthew Sweet, R.E.M., Drive-By Truckers, and, especially, Afghan Whigs. There's a bit more gentility here than on Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers or Alligitor; with luck, they will just get rougher and rougher. The mire becomes them.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD........2002-10-02

For various work-related reasons, people are always giving me their CDs to listen to. A coworker bugged me for months to listen to this CD, but it wasn't until I put it in my car's rotation that I had time to listen to it. That was last week, and I've been listening to it almost constantly ever since. I love the resonance of his voice, the lyrics are fresh and intelligent, the songs are all listenable and just fantastic. I can't say enough good about it.

5 out of 5 stars If you are between the age of 18 and 38, buy this album........2002-04-19

I could listen to this album every day. It's that good. This is coming from a guy who had to fill his 400 CD random player to keep things interesting.

I won't analyze The National's album. I wouldn't want to taint your perception.

4 out of 5 stars It's a keeper.......2002-02-12

On the strength of one song, "Son", I bought this CD. Since then, I've replayed that one along with "John's Stars" and "Pay for Me" a hundred times. Overall, the songs are polished but still show enough scratches and dents to have an interesting finish, moody but not morose. I did sometimes wish Matt Berninger would have ripped a Tom Waits howls now and then...some of the songs just begged for it. In the end, though, I'd recommend this CD to my favorite friends.

Bassist and synthesist Patrick O'Hearn began his career backing up music wizard Frank Zappa in the 1970s before forming the new-wave band Missing Persons in the early '80s and later striking out on his own. Somewhere along the way his music has morphed into electronic New Age, sometimes resembling ambient masters Tangerine Dream, sometimes Yanni. Metaphor is a fine testament to O'Hearn's talent for songwriting. He deftly layers his ambient pieces with blankets of lulling rhythm or washes before tucking a soft melody into the cotton of airy synth and chiming sequences. "The Women of Lachaise" builds on this technique beautifully, creating an urban landscape smooth around the edges with whiffs of smokey synth and competing with "Let Truth Prevail" for an electronic soundtrack reminiscent of Bladerunner. If you've checked out Tangerine Dream, if you've checked out Steve Roach, and are now wondering where to go from here, give Patrick O'Hearn a listen; he may be your next favorite electronic artist. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars Look deeper...completely beautiful!.......2004-12-26

I've read alot about "arrangements" and "dancing in dew covered fields" and such, but I haven't seen anything about "feeling". I bought this cd because I remembered POH's name being mentioned on a new age station I listened to long ago. Chattahoochee Field Day was one of those songs back then so I expected something great and was in no way disappointed!

From the first song to the last, it felt like he was trying to say something, relay a message...it was something you had to find on your own but there was only one meaning, not an individual interpretation.

The first clue to this meaning was the cover - the statue that is worn away in sadness - I had no idea at the time where that statue was or what it meant. But the image (images including inside pamphlet) and the music was haunting. One passage in particular, The Women of Lachaise, kept at me until I wrote out the feeling of the song into a poem. I thought that was the end of it but it still kept at me.

Taking to the net, I did research on the name in the title and found Pere Lachaise...a cemetary of great history and amazing art in the form of mourning souls. Now people may find this morbid, however I feel it is a message saying transition is nothing to be afraid of. Once I finished my research and found the whole story, the haunting let me go. I still love LOVE this cd and if I were stranded on a desert island with only one cd and a lifetime of batteries for a player, Metaphor would be it.

These are all opinions here - the others are as valid as mine and vice-versa. The only REAL way for you to judge is to listen for yourself. But if you do, make sure you listen with your soul and not just your ears.

Much love...BlueEnBlue

3 out of 5 stars Good but not his best work..........2002-11-16

Of all his recording this particular recording is the least varied although at outset the primal tribal aspect is rather intriguing. Hmmmm.. Tribal electronic music. The problem is that there are less sonic colors than in any of his previous recordings. Of course Patrick set a pretty strong pace there and it's hard for all of them to be gems. I like this recording but I have to admit that unlike his other recordings, I have to be in the mood for it. It is not the Patrick O'Hearn recording I would reach for when I want to hear Patrick O'Hearn. This recordings is thematic somewhat like a short film soundtrack. A good recording but not equal to his other works.

2 out of 5 stars WHEN THE STARS STARTS TO FALL.......2002-04-18

It does not take a genius or a hard-core fan of POH to notice the decay of his ability to compose classical-rate pieces. It started with the CD TRUST as one feels and sees POH's gloomy vision of this planet and its human cargo. "Trust" had a message imbedded in it and it is an honest and profound message for mankind of what is to come to this planet. Metaphor on the other hand lacks a message or a theme and in my opinion reflects POH's lack of exuberance towards life or music, ergo, the music in Metaphor is a stew of sound going nowhere. Yes, there are a few short catchy melodic bars but the melodic flow of each piece stagnates like a broken record repeating over and over and it gets boring. The musical soundscape of Metaphor is 2 dimensional compared to POH's previous works that are vividly more 3 dimensional in musical and sound layering.

I don't know, but based on Metaphor, POH's musical well is starting to dry up. It is not a bad thing, we all go thru the same thing. It is part of being human...so did Mozart, Bethoven,Dvorak......

5 out of 5 stars P.O.'s worst but still an essential masterpiece........2001-11-21

In my opinion there is no such thing as mediocrity in the O,hearn world. Coming off from the heels of the dark and medievel Trust this is a very good follow-up to it. However this album is a step down from the previous and unlike it this album needs time to grow on you but don't sweat. You will love this album as well in the end.

Unlike Trust this album is more acoustic and even more tribal sounding though mantaining his trademark sound in some areas.

Patience My Friend is a very medievel song with some beeping sounds in some areas. Crossing the Divide features more acoustic guitars and more tribal drums that results in one of his most acoustic songs to date and it works well. Peace Be With You is a stunning piece with gorgeous flutes and tribal drums and a soothing jazzy atmosphere. The Women Of Lachaise is a sogn with lots of tribal percussion with some electronic sounds but overall this is a very mediecel song. It ends with maracas and a flute fading out. Drive is my favorite sogn on this CD. It's a somewhat space oriented song with lots of echoing pianos and an awesome bass line. This is the winner on this album. Let Truth Prevail is another song with tribal percussion but with some of his trademark sound. Images In Stone is an okay song with just some medievel keyboards and a very dark feel. All Quiet Now is sort of like Peace but a minor note and with some thundering drums. Faith And Endurance is a good closer to this masterpiece. It's a fast paced song with unusual sounding guitars and face paced drums. It ends with a loud clang.

This may be his weakest album to date but this is still a five star and is an essential for fans of P.O. 's post Indigo material. Those who may not care for this disc are probably looking for more of his more electronic sound. While I understand why they may be dissapointed with this one this should not be passed up by any fan. Go ahead give it a try I,m sure most of you will love it in the end.

While this is my least favorite by him I still love it. He would surpass this one five years later with his crowning achievement So Flow The Current, my favorite album by him to date.

3 out of 5 stars Another Good Set From P. O.!!!.......2001-05-30

For those of you familiar w/ PO's work you'll find this to be a slight change of direction. This album finds Patrick using more acoustic instrumentation lending itself to a more tribal sound. There's no getting away from PO's signature arrangements and developments but the use of large skinned drums certainly gives you that Native American flavor. Patrick's previous work sounds much more atmospheric. This work finds itself grounded in a natural earthly meditational state as apposed to the ambient celestial stratosphere. But this is not a bad thing, it's just a subtle shift. Metaphor does not play through as well as some of his other works either, like Indigo & River's Gonna Rise. Those two discs are fantastic, beginning to end, especially RGR. Metaphor has a few pieces in there that I tend to skip over, kinda uneventful slow movers that never quite develop. You just keep waiting for some development....and nothin'. All in all, I really like about 5 of the tracks. Of course, recording and production are tremendous as usual for Mr. O'Hearn. If you're already a fan, you'll certainly want to add this one to your collection. If you're not, get River's Gonna Rise, Eldorado, Indigo & Trust then Metaphor.

5 out of 5 stars Patrick O' Hearns daytime album.......2003-05-23

Metaphor is quite different than Patrick O' Hearns other albums. On Metaphor he uses many different instruments like on "Crossing the Divide" I noticed at the beginning there were a lot of guitars. But on a few songs he did some of the same sounds that he did from Trust. Like on "Let Truth Prevail" I noticed some of the sounds were the same. I still gave the album 5 stars because I thought that even though his music was a bit different it was still worth a listen to.

If you were happy with Patrick O' Hearns albums: Ancient Dreams, Indigo and Between Two Worlds you might want to listen to a few of the songs before you buy the album but I would recommend it to any new age listener!

5 out of 5 stars Patrick O'hearns weakest album but it's still a five star........2002-09-08

I have heard that a fair number of fans are not too much into this album. That's understandable because on Metaphor, O'Hearn goes further away from the electronic space sounds of his first two albums and into more acoustic instruments giving his 90s works a more of a medievel & tribal sound. This CD is his most obscure and least accessable album that he's ever put out. While I respect that a fair number of people don't like this album at all I have to disagree with them saying that it's a mediocre album. On the contrary, it's actually a beautiful album. It just isn't as easy to get into as alot of his other works.

The leadoff track Patience My Friend is probably the song that has the most of his more trademark sound with electronic keyboards and blipping sound effects but overall it's a very medievel sounding track. The Dividing Line is far more tribal with strong acoustic guitar strings and tribal beats. Peace Be With You is a gorgeous jazzier track with a much stronger Native American flavor and jazzy basslines. This one is probably the brightest song on this CD. The Women Of Lachaise has more of a sound that is more in the field of 3 Circles with similar sounding drums but where 3 Circles has a spacier sound Lachaise on the other is very tribal sounding. Drive is by far my favorite song on this entire album. It starts off with echoing sound effects and then turns into a strongly ambient groove with heavy bobbling basslines, tribal drums, & mezmerizing echoing pianos. Let Truth is another track that is more in the vein of his earlier Ancient Dreams-esqe sounds but even this one has a strongly medievel sound to it. Images In Stone is a dark haunting track with little rhythm. Instead there are haunting, ominous ambient crescendos throughout the song. All Quiet Now is a very mournful song with a Native American flavor and lots of tribal drums. This is one to play on a dark cloudy evening. The final track Faith & Endurance is a bizarre track that has strange guitars and fast paced beats giving the song a more intense feel. The loud clang at the ending brings Metaphor to a close.

This CD is by far the least accessable album he's ever put out. It's kind of a shame that it would be five years before another album would follow but 2001s So Flows The Current though was worth it.

This CD is strongly recommended. :)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Melodic, complex, dynamic and very entertaining.......2004-06-19

This instrumental music is sophisticated yet accesible and melodic. The compositions are in the best tradition of theme statement, development and re-statement with plently of rhythmic drive. Each of the four players has a great mastery of his instrument as well as the ability to support and enhance the group dynamic. The music is energetic fun and intelligent. The CD is also recorded very well and makes your stereo system sound great. This band deserves to be well known.

If you enjoy, Yes, The Hellecasters, Gentle Giant,or Oregon you may well enjoy this music; although it does not exactly sound like any of these bands. What they all have in common is a musicality and interest in melody, composition and rhythmic drive that makes the music rock in an uplifting and inspiring manner.

5 out of 5 stars Great music--from another Bay Area fan!.......2004-01-08

This band's compositionally inspired instrumental music is original and great. It perfectly showcases each of the musician's technical abilities. There are too many influences and styles to the music to list here. Suffice it to say, that while you might recognize these influences, you're left with an overall musical experience that works, and leaves you wanting more.I had an opportunity to see the band live in performance and was extremely impressed! I'm looking forward to hearing more music from these guys. If they don't become a household name, it would be a shame. If you get a chance to see the band live, don't hesitate. If not, pick up some of their available music on CD. You certainly won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars BTG Barton Tyler Group Like A Metaphor.......2003-11-28

This outstanding CD features distinctive instrumental songs showcasing fine guitar work, strong and interesting bass lines and compositions that blends in musically beautifull and engaging ways. All of this defines the BTG Barton Tyler Group CD "Like A Metaphor". The music is dynamic and fluid, influenced by folk traditions, rock, and the blues. This music defies catagory, except one: that being examplary.

The music travels and returns to the theme, much like jazz, yet this isn't jazz. The influences are diverse, and that is what makes this music so rich. The instrumental songs are upbeat and emotionally charged with feeling. Very listenable, very likable; a wonderful gift to give or receive.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars this band is excellent.......2004-08-08

describing mr. metaphor has always been a pretty tough thing for me to do. on the outside, they seem like a pretty typical indie rock group. afro here, british-looking guy there, scrawny dudes all over. then you hear the beginning of a song and that idea stays there. but about twenty seconds later, when they suddenly pull some amazing musical switches, you realize they're so much more than an indie rock group.
they're a musical juggernaut, capable of fusing even the most unlikely combinations of riffs together with relative ease. and it's so technical. it's like prog meets indie meets pop meets whatever you want to call bands that sound like at the drive in. yet mr. metaphor manages to expand upon all of this to create something altogether greater than the sum of its parts.
the only downside is, no matter how much energy you hear on this disc, it doesn't come close to rivaling the energy you'll find at their live show.
this is definitely worth the pickup, even if it's only six tracks.

3 out of 5 stars America's First SpaceRock Festival Features British Headliners Hawkwind & Nik Turner.......2005-10-09

Strange Daze '97 is an aural record of the first outdoor "SpaceRock" festival to be held in the United States. The headliners Saturday are Hawkwind, 25-year veterans of the outdoor music festival scene in the UK (who began their career by playing numerous free outdoor gigs- at times as a protest outside the fence of concerts where outrageous prices were being charge. Hendrix dropped by and watched the band at one of these). On Friday night former Hawkwinder Nik Turner headlined fronting Far Flung. He arrived on stage with crutches, the victim of a broken leg rumored to be from a motorcycle accident. The balance of the acts are primarily American with the exception of "Born To Go's" lead singer.
Strange Daze is a two disc set uniquely arranged. The first disc is pretty straightforward- one song from each of the bands arranged chronologically in the order they took the stage... with the exception that the headliners are saved until disc 2.
Disc 2 is a bit crazy. It includes 4 complete Hawkwind songs (at 23+ minutes) and 3 complete Far Flung with Nik Turner songs (at 10+ minutes). There are 5 complete songs by some of the other bands. Then there are excerpts from 6 of the songs on the first CD (totaling less than 12 minutes in length) and there is even 1 song (Bionaut's "Re-Laminate My Organ Donor Card") from the first CD that is repeated (almost) completely in a reedited form.
What do I mean by reedited? Well, the track begins on the second CD about 5 seconds later than on the original CD (mostly cutting off the unnecessary beginning of one long sustained synthesizer note) but adds about 15 seconds to the end! This makes it longer than the 'full' version on disc 1.
And all of the tracks on disc 2 are arranged in a superficially random fashion. So what is going on here?
The package does not tell us this but Dave Brock, founder and main force behind Hawkwind, helped produce Space Daze '97. As he is a bit of a self-proclaimed anarchist, that would be a simple explanation for us. A little too simple, as it turns out.
Listening to this disc several times I realized that what we have here is a 'stream of consciousness' recording. Hawkwind did not arrive until Saturday, but when they did Dave made it a point to walk around the Brushwood New York campsite and visit every group of campers. He wanted to know his audience. He recorded some of his encounters and in between songs, or snippets thereof, a few of these (and other recorded festival noises) have been spliced in.
"Hello there," you here Dave say.
"I love you" cries a female fan.
"I say, jolly nice!" Dave replies, before "Burning Inside" fades in over the conversation.
The disc is roughly chronological, but not exactly, the way one would remember a 2 day festival with lots of bands. The song repeated in its entirety twice, but edited in a slightly different fashion (and arguably edited to sound 'better' in Brock's memory on disc 2 than what it 'really' was on disc 1) samples Hawkwind's "Countdown" from a live concert aired over the BBC on October 14, 1972. Obviously one remembers things better if they relate to you personally, thus the song gets more emphasis.
Excerpts of songs seem to very from seconds to almost 4 minutes in way that seems to me to emphasize (via length) the songs that made the most impact on Dave. For the most part, the songs blend into each other or into snippets of conversation and festival noise with 2 exceptions. Following the Bionaut's song sampling Hawkwind is a retrospective silence and just before the Hawkwind 4-song set at the end of the disc is a long break I relate to, as it represents the time you blank out your surroundings and gear up for the stage. And then Hawkwind's set begins. Obviously over a third of this disc is Hawkwind- that's where the emphasis is in Dave's mind and without Hawkwind there would have been no SpaceRock festival! Nik Turner's set comes second, with 3 songs allotted to him, as Nik and Dave were bandmates off and on for years. And Turner actually did join Hawkwind on stage for a number of songs that August night, although on none presented here.
For the record, Drumplay did not have a stage set, but played for the bonfire on both Friday and Saturday nights following the headliners and members of Hawkwind did attend the bonfire. There is one thing I regret this set not including, and that is one of the numbers Nik Turner performed solo onstage after the final concert on his saxophone. As the lights went up fans were disappointed that Hawkwind only did one encore. As roadies began carrying equipment off the stage Turner came on with his sax, cast and all, and began to play- first without even a mike, but finally, after ten minutes, a roadie brought one up and he went through a few of the little tunes he does and at least one Hawkwind song ("Master of the Universe"?). He played a total of 30 minutes following the 90 minute Hawkwind set.
The concerts were taped on a 24 track machine by a mobile recording unit. Naturally, at least a few of the bands have bootlegs of their full concert floating around out there...
The set does not list the track order for disc 2 and the order given in the item description is wrong, so I have listed all the tracks on disc 2 and their times for you here:

    4 out of 5 stars The long-awaited follow-up to "Comic Sutra.".......2004-06-17

"Homeland" works best when played in conjunction with his other recent release "Security." Both CDs take a critical, but funny look, at the political and social climate in the US since 9/11. Songs like "Let's Go After the Buddhists" and "Jerry Falwell's God" skewer some of the uglier aspects of conventional wisdom, while remaining very funny.

Not all the songs are political. For instance, "Would You Let Me" gives the listener one side of a marital spat that goes absolutely nowhere. Roy's delivery is dead on perfect as a husband who can't even finish anything he starts to say to his wife. I recommend strongly that you listen to this with someone you love.

I've seen Roy Zimmerman in concert twice, and these CDs catch some of the energy of his live performances (most of the tracks are recorded live). In addition to having a wonderful knack for lyrical humor, Zimmerman is a terrific guitarist.
