5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful music and superb recording!.......2003-01-14

I first heard the first 3 tracks from NPR on one September day and was simply breathless. Especially with Satie's music, I only knew it being the piano solo without realizing that Debussy had orchestra arrangement for it. Furthermore I didn't realize that the orchestra interpretation can be so moving that it almost brought tears to my eyes. It's so beautiful and rich in sound, adding whole new dimensions to the original solo that I remember by heart.

I contacted the radio station inquiring about the CD and interestingly enough, the label happens to be one of the small recording companies. Luckily they have a website and from there I found myself a good deal through Amazon Marketplace.

The cd consists of music of slow tempo. Many familiar tracks now have new meanings to me. I'm also fond of track 6, the melody lingers on long afterwards. The last track is also by Satie. With the same the style and tempo as the opening track, it ends the CD nicely.

I'm so happy to own such a superbly recorded CD which is also the first one I played many times continueously. This has become my favourite possession among hundreds of my cds.

So please get a copy for yourself, find a quiet Sunday afternoon, have a cup of tea ready and emerge yourself in the breathtaking music......

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise.......2002-08-15

Reference Recordings' "Reveries" seems to be a significant departure from many of their prior releases, which for the most part have been works of extremely wide dynamic range. Also interesting, is that all the works selected for this album use a "andante" or "walking tempo".

The RR Website states the works selected are "Relaxing, beloved classics by Debussy, Satie, Ravel, Faurè, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and more, beautifully played by one of America's great orchestras. A balm for jangled nerves, and excellent music for unwinding and dining!"

Personally, I don't purchase albums like the one described above. I generally want a good deal of "sturm und drang" in my music. But, I so much enjoyed the past three RR releases (Copland, Respighi, and Rachmaninoff) with Oue and the Minnesota, I couldn't resist. At a minimum I was curious how well Prof. Johnson captured the many subtle orchestra colors and sounds found in these works, and how well Oue and the Minnesota handled these (mostly) familiar "classics".

Instead of "relaxing", I found myself significantly impressed and surprised by the interpretations and quality of ensemble in some of the tracks on this disk. Even more surprising is how moved I was by them.

There are 12 tracks in all. Where this CD caught fire for me was track 7, Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun"; followed by track 9, Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess"; track 11, Sibelius's "The Swan of Tuonela", and finally Saite's (as arranged by Debussy) "Gymnopedie No. 3".

I have long been familiar with all of the above, but have no particular recollection of connecting strongly with any of these works. I made the connection today. Perhaps the whole is greater then the sum of the parts. Like a "magic eye" picture, where out of a chaotic 2-D image emerges a coherent 3-D picture, perhaps the first 6 tracks were a perfect setup for what was to follow. The same might be true of the recording quality. As I listened to this CD, the "sound image" became more clear and realistic. By the end I was mostly under the illusion that I was in a live hall, a rare experience for me at home.

The orchestral playing is at times simply wonderful. I'm most impressed by how much commitment both the conductor and orchestra seem to bring to these very familiar, "relaxing" ;-) works. Since Oue is leaving the orchestra, this may be his last RR recording with the Minnesota (I hope not of course). If this is true, perhaps this caused the musicians to play with even more inspiration than I am accustomed. In particular a bravo goes to english horn player, Marni Hougham on the Sibelius.

Overall, this release is quite a pleasant surprise. I will look forward to hearing from anyone else who has listened to this disk, favorable or not.

I read all reviews before I bought this CD and was looking forward to adding it to my collection. I own most of Dan Gibsons music but I have to say that I was disappointed in this one. The music was lovely, but the wolf calls were not what I expected. The calls of the beautiful, haunting wolf sounds we are accustomed to, are very few. Most of the wolf sounds are of wolf pups snarling and making growling sounds. I had hoped to hear the haunting calls more often. I was not as fond of this as I had hoped. I see there is another wolf CD by Gibson but I would be reluctant to buy it till I can here more of it.

5 out of 5 stars Travel to the Alaskan wilderness - close your eyes and relax.......2004-11-06

I bought this CD when I was in high school from a display in a leather handcrafter at a Michigan flea market. Over the years I played it constantly, taking it with me wherever I went... it eventually got so beat up that it started playing funny... so, I did something I never did for any other CD before - I bought a second copy! It's still sealed, but if my original ever gives out, I don't want to be without this. It's that good.

Sure, we have our fair share of New Age wilderness + classical music/piano CDs, but this has by far been the most exquisite melding of the two I have ever experienced. From the moment you slip the CD into your player and the ambient wind blows across the snow, to the imagery conjured by the gradual buildup of strings and eventually piano, flute, oboe and french horn into a perfect backdrop for a pack of wolves striding against snow-covered pines... you know this is no ordinary CD. I've never grown tired of it, even after all these years.

I think that I am most impressed by the balance of sounds used in the CD, as in the lack of repetitive, bland ambient natural noises and the careful use of instrumentation to accent (but not overpower) the environmental sounds. The interplay between the piano and the wolves in (5) Moving the Pack is an interesting call and response... showing how Dan Gibson manages to bring to the forefront each of the elements of his Solitude when it is its turn.

The majority of the music on this CD is of a slower rhythm, and the ambient environment runs the gamut from snowy forest, thunderstorm, seashore waves and meadow. (7) The Beckoning is a very evocative piece, wistful and sad. It is an example, however, of how Gibson manages to maintain a driving rhythm and motion to his music without relying on heavy beats - it's an emotional propulsion.

I am glad to still see this CD in production, since that means others can still experience it. I rarely post reviews, but I needed to get the word out on this musical gem.

I have never really paid much attention to the many "Solitudes" albums that are out on the market now, but this one caught my eye particularly because I was intrigued by the thought of music being created to suit an animal we know so little about. After acquiring this album I was suitably amazed and awed by the scope and insight of Gibson's music inspired by this truly majestic creature.

Wolves have played a prominent part in myth and folklore, and Legend of the Wolf is a rare piece of work that manages to capture the ghostly, haunting presence of these legendary creatures. Gibson grants them the ethereal, magical status that they have been given throughout history, without forgetting to tie their roots to the very Earth with whom they live in a harmony far more perfect than that attempted by human beings.

The opening track, Silent Runner, is a jawdropper to begin with, and the rest of the album carries the same natural energy and beauty inherent within the song. There is no doubt that this is an accolade of the highest to these creatures who have inspired so many just with their simple existence.

I bought this CD as I love Wolves and I think that this music is very fitting for these beautiful creatures. Dan Gibson has created a very moving and sweet overture and mixes them in with some wonderful forest SFX and howling wolves. The CD can work as a sort of movie soundtrack also. Try to imagine the images which fit the music and some beautiful images will be painted in your head. This makes for a CD that is both relaxing and haunting.

This CD is a spectacular creation of an enviromnent only touched by the human world. For long wolves have been regarded as creatures of the night, and being evil in many ways, but this CD contradicts that right away. Just the sounds of the wolf pack recorded hear allows you to recognize the unique structure of a wolf family, I agree with others in the fact that it can bring you to tears in its aurora of beauty. The music tied into this CD also creates that certian atmosphere, where at one moment you want to just sit back and listen, and in another you want to run free in the wild with the wolves. I highly recommend this for EVERY wolf lover (as I am one), because it will surey take your breath away.
