About the Artist
Joe Yamada was born and raised on a U.S. military base in Japan. He moved to the U.S. in 1993 to attend Western Washington University. Although his academic studies were mostly in the natural sciences, Yamada spent much of his university life outside the classroom writing music. After graduating from W.W.U., the self-taught pianist decided to pursue his dream of becoming a songwriter and performer. In 1999, Yamada signed his first record deal overseas for his demo CD “Still Dreaming.” Now at the age of 25, Yamada is promoting his first full-length CD “Heartfelt,” on his own label Cascade Records, and plans to continue sharing his music with the world.

It's hard to believe that this is the eighth Fourplay album. It seems that the group tried so hard to duplicate the commercial success of their first three albums that they sleepwalked through the next three. Now freed from the corporate culture of the monolithic record company they once answered to, the supergroup has re-energized and finally, after 10 years, surpassed the artistic success of their marvelous self-titled debut. It's as if some of their smooth-jazz slickness has been worn away, because Heartfelt actually shows there are some hard edges to the group. Oh sure, Harvey Mason's "That's the Time," Larry Carton's "Rollin,'" and Nathan East's "Let's Make Love," may find their way to radio and help push album sales, but on many of the tracks, including two they wrote collectively ("Galaxia," "Café L'Amour"), there's a bit too much sizzle for airplay. Carlton has really settled into the group and he actually has some burning guitar solos that will also never be heard on said staid airwaves. On a couple of tracks, Bob James echoes his very popular '70s keyboard sound, especially "Break It Out," which is very reminiscent of his classic "Westchester Lady." --Mark Ruffin

4 out of 5 stars AMPLIFIED FIRE.......2004-12-08

I think the even the devoted jazz fan should be forgiven if he confuses HEARTFELT with a more recent Bob James solo CD or even (at times) a Larry Carlton project. Most of us hardly think this is a bad thing. Both James and Carlton have such distinctive voices that that it is not surprising their presence can overwhelm any standard quartet arrangement. In the particular case of this CD, I challenge anyone to play HEARTFELT next to James' MORNING NOON & NIGHT and tell which is which in a blindfold test. Unless you can detect Carlton's playing in the mix, you can't.

To a large degree, this is like the similarity between a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers CD and a Tom Petty solo project. Aside from the shuffle of backup players, we're talking pretty much about the same thing. This dominance of one player is constantly contradicted by the obvious camaraderie among the members of Fourplay. With Carlton replacing Lee Ritenour a couple of albums and several tours ago, it is safe to say he is fully integrated with the group. Perhaps this accounts for the amplified "fire" in the playing for HEARTFELT. But for my money this is still Bob James band.

All that having been said, Fourplay are (without much fanfare) moving away from the glossy "smooth jazz" sound that found its commercial market way back in the 1980's. That formula paid a lot of bills and sustained a boatload of careers; but there is a huge "been there done that" albatross hanging around the format. Listeners who have been with the format from the beginning are moving on. The musicians themselves are either retiring or itching to go to a new level. Better than most, Fourplay are well respected enough within and outside the "soft jazz" design that they can stretch themselves. It also doesn't hurt they have a solid and loyal fan base.

The first four pieces kick off the CD with promising assured confidence and inventiveness. "Galaxia" is a little mysterious while "That's The Time" is quietly busy and hinting at something sneaky. "Break It Out" And "Rollin'" both hit their own funky grooves and ride them out. Unfortunately, "Let's Make Love" with Babyface disrupts the flow. Like most other reviewers, I consider "Let's Make Love" is out of place here. Perhaps, the members of Fourplay thought they just couldn't totally break free of the old format altogether; but even so it is pretty much a below average song for Babyface.

"Heartfelt" returns to form and is more meditative and reflective than any of the previous cuts. The general tone of the piece reveals it is a remembrance rather than a present tense avowal of sentiment. "Tally Ho" is one of the strongest cuts on the album-just behind "Galaxia" overall. In contrast to the rest of HEARTFELT, "Tally Ho" is an openly joyful number one imagines an uncomplicated pleasure in driving home from a good day at work. "Café L'Amour" affects a slow, smoldering undercurrent of one casting his/her romantic enchantment on another. "Ju Ju" meanders and threatens like a witch doctor wordlessly passing by. "Going Back Home" is a semi-vocal number that is surprisingly sinister. "Karma" is playful in an understated way and ""Making Up" is a slow, romantic, longing closer to one of Fourplay's better efforts.

Some speculate that Fourplay's freedom from their old record company has allowed them to be more daring with a wider range of moods. I don't know about that. What is certain is that the usual suspects will still be dissatisfied that Fourplay has not moved even farther than they have. Equally certain is that the loyalty of Fourplay's fans is amply rewarded here.

3 out of 5 stars Mimusic.......2004-09-17

This was not one of my favorites. Unfortunately, Track 5 "Let's Make Love" was my favorite and there was no relevance to the title nor music. It was rather out of place, yet, I am one of their greatest fans and I will remain that. I am in the process of buying the new album...maybe they revamped on this one. I would recommend purchasing "4", "Between the Sheets" and "Elixir." They are fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars I love Fourplay.......2004-02-29

I'm not surprised how great this cd is. I have alot of their music and I'm hooked!

5 out of 5 stars Downright serious and brilliant music.......2004-02-19

As wonderful and as seductive as contemporary polished jazz can be, it's often pretty slight and forgettable. That's definitely not the case with this album. With Heartfelt, Fourplay has not only broken away from the Warner label for Bluebird, but has ripped free from their increasingly conservative template of delivering smooth, romantic jazz in exchange for a much more experimental - and satisfactory - undertaking. From the opening overdriven guitar lick and entrancing piano melody of the ethereal, longing "Galaxia," the restrictive label of "smooth jazz" is immediately tossed out the window. The LP quickly then shifts into the epic "That's the Time," by contrast a tightly-constructed and pulsating piece projected by a beautiful interchange of rhythm and melody phrasing that leaves nothing to be desired. For the most part, the rest of Heartfelt delightfully backs these two pieces up with justice - the snarl of "Cafe l'Amour," the bright catchiness of "Karma," and the downright classic jazz traditionalism of "Tally Ho!" open up a lot of room for soloing - which Yes, Please lacked - and exploration for each virtuoso. Essentially, these pieces stand out with their unique and memorable melodies and original production. It's not the perfect record, but it does stand a head above the rest of the industry's production because of its musical strength and artistic earnestness.

4 out of 5 stars Tired of the polish of the radio stuff..?.......2003-11-10

Somebody really cool that they respect must have gotten to these guys and said, "Enough already; just play".

A couple of the tracks still sit pretty pat in the contemporary jazz radio chair ("Let's Make Love" being the most blatant culprit here), but much of this record is simply too cool and out-of-the-norm to fall inbetween Marion Meadows and the 13th Sade song that hour on your average radio dial. There's WAY less vocal action here for once, allowing the band to really show off why getting together in the first place was such a good idea: all of these guys are legends in their own right and having them play together is asking for a great time. They seem to be reaching backwards a little, with grooves and arrangements that challenge casual listening but keep you nodding your head with the beat...like Bob James USED to do all of the time (not Grover Washington-period funky, but definitely in line with his 80s stuff before it went too soft). "Galaxia" and "Cafre L'amour" have some serious teeth.

If you miss the Yellowjackets circa 1990, or the local jazz radio station seems to run the same sax player over a Lisa Stansfield beat one too many times for your taste anymore, get this record. It's sharp as a tack and I'm sure will make some long-standing fans turn their heads a little, but will recover longtime fans of the players who wrote this group off about album #3 or so.

Album Description

Hailing from Alabama, Owsley has been nurturing and honing his own unique and virally-infectious melodies for some time. His debut album Owsley received huge praise from the media. People Magazine heralded him "poised for overnight success," while Rolling Stone trumpeted "Beatle-esque balladry and magnetic pop hooks." His latest release "The Hard Way" continues his road to perfection. Sultry love songs rub against the hookiest pop south of Canada. Check out why his legion of fans are growing by the minute. This is a true masterpeice of pop craftsmanship.

4 out of 5 stars Close... but not quite Owsley - Owsley.......2007-01-10

This guy is a player, he writes great hooks, and this album is very well done. I may have been spoiled by Owsley - Owsley. Had I heard The Hard Way first, I may have a reversed opinion. Maybe just not enough new sound to this to give it the 5 stars. But you won't be disappointed in it, just might not blow your hair all the way off.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Pervasive Powerpop.......2005-07-02

This record has repeatedly made me late--when it's on, I want to listen & absorb it all. Bad for me, but in a good way. It doesn't help that the last (official) track, Rainy Day People, is my favorite on the record, melding perfectly from the song before it. I adore Abbey Road, so maybe that's why I can't get enough of the last part of the record: The Hard Way, Dirty Bird, Rain Day People, and the hidden & accurate McCartney homage, Band on the Run.

The first half of the record is heartfelt and honest. "Matriarch" is an especially touching song of mourning. But my vote, if you're going over the music samples, is to check out the end. Especially if you like later Beatles.

( ..and, if you get the chance, see him live! This is a studio album, but every tune sounded amazing in concert. As testimony to the him and the guys he toured with, they successfully covered Steely Dan. That's no easy feat.)

4 out of 5 stars overcoats and a crackpot from planet antares.......2005-03-03

I'm actually hurting a little bit. See, I bumped my head into the wall. What happened was I went to see if maybe that Will Owsley guy had a new CD out, thought I could buy it on Amazon. And why not! Loved the first two. Then I started reading the reviews posted for The Hard Way. Dammed if I didn't bust my head falling and laughing at what I saw. That breathless "Fan" love letter stuff is great, it's good to have something mean something to you, I'm with ya. Music sounds good!

But now a word or eleventy-billion or so about you two bitch slappers snappin' at each other.

Alright Mr. "having worked as an engineer with Will personally", pitch correction is like a light switch. On or off. "little, if any"....Hmmmmm. Sure, I will grant you that there are many choices of adjustment, I will acknowledge that there are many parameters that can be tweaked within the software, I can even talk reasonably about them, but that's pompous and boring. I'm only trying for pompous. You sound like a guy who read an interview with Will Owsley in Crawling Up the Ass of Indie Recording Sessions Magazine. No actual engineer I know would describe PCS usage so...so...unbelievably. Hey if I'm wrong, sorry. And if you could stay the hell away from Will's future recording sessions, much appreciated.

Let's take a good look at the "spotlight" review. Or maybe not. I would under some circumstances enjoy coming up with some really clever bitingly sarcastic name for this moron, but the fact he uses his real name is punishment enough. Goat-Licking Ass Clencher sounds kinda funny though. You are so completely wrong about PCS it's really debatable as whether to even dignify your ignorance. You personally could never detect the use of.....auto - tune is a different.... attack and release settings....80% of all artists use PCS in some capacity, undetectably....yeah, like Will is ever 20 cents off.
Great, now I'm losing it. See what happens when I wind up so far from where I wanted to be. Or is it the vacuous blather of your other bleatings. Why did I feel so compelled to "read all my reviews". Guess what, Fountains of Wayne SUCK!!! You are, alternately, right on the money about Dan Brown, I'd of figured you two for buddies though. One more thing, to the dude who wrote "Excellent sophomoric effort" that's comedy! I am so going to lie down now.

5 out of 5 stars Owsley makes it two in a row!!.......2005-02-14

In an age where over produced, incoherent noise is what passes for "music" these days, along comes a true artist like Wil Owsley who reminds you of what rock n' roll SHOULD be. He did it on his first album. Now four years later, he does again on his new release "The Hard Way".

Owsley's new disc is a slight departure from his 1999 debut titled simpley "Owsley". He's developing as a song writer but the songs are a little more layered in thier sound. The guitars are more distorted and the overall feeling goes for more of a pollished sound than the stripped down production of his first album.

The album kicks off with the single "Be With You", an ode to unrequetted love. But even though Be With You is the lead track it is not the strongest cut on the album. That distinction goes to the second track "Rise". Full of pounding drum beats, sky high backing vocals, and a great hook, "Rise" brings out the best of Matthew Sweet, Badfinger and Cheap Trick rolled into a three and a half minute pop song. The album continues with the "She's The One",(another standout track) a song about regret and love lost. Owsley is becoming more visually descriptive in his lyrics. As evidenced by tracks like the title cut "The Hard Way", a story about a compulsive gambler (the last line personifying Lady Luck ;"she's always waiting for me, to love me or ignore me").

There is a hidden bonus track on this CD. At the end of the song Rainy Day People, you will hear Owsley's version of "Band On The Run" recorded for the 2002 McCartney tribute CD "Listen To What the Man Said".

At first this CD didn't connect with me. But after repeated listening I found that I appreciated it more and more. It holds up extremely well after repeated listening. Further more everyone who I've recomended this CD to LOVES it! There is no sophmore jinx here. Owsley has proven himself a consistent and talented singer/songwriter. He really is the real deal.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sophomoric effort.......2004-11-03

Just sharing my opinions. I too discovered Owsley by accident - it was on a listening station at Tower for new artists, and I just happened to punch the button for his CD, and was quickly hooked. I have an extremely varied taste in music, and I listen in phases. But I have never, in three years, gotten tired of his album, and sort of reveled in the fact that I was listening to music that was so good and that no one else seemed to know about.

So imagine my surprise when I saw his new album at Best Buy. Picked it up immediately, and put it in the CD player when I got back to my car. Right from the get go, I was less than impressed with the first two songs (more so with the second than the first). A little whiney and bland (again, especially the second one). But once the third song came on, we were off to the races. I noticed that the first two were written by Owsley and another guy, and only these two songs were written with this other guy (I can't remember his name). Perhaps it was his influence that affected my taste in them. All I can say is that the rest of the album rocks.

It is hard for me to pick a favorite between an album that I've listened to multiple times over three years and one that I've listened to perhaps half a dozen times in a few days. However, at this point in time, I would pick the second album - it is a little harder/rougher, but it still remains polished from a production perspective.

If you like pop in the same vain as the Beatles, it is almost impossible to go wrong with Owsley.

Album Description

Popular percussionist Girish is blasting through the defining boundaries of the chant music genre, bringing a fresh, exciting, and yet deeply spiritual interpretation that is sure to change the way that audiences and performers think of chant music. You may readily recognize the familiar sound of Girish's tabla playing, which has consistently graced popular chant recordings for the last decade. Now Girish is revolutionizing the world of chants with his funky, stirring style. On his new CD, Reveal, he intelligently incorporates pop, jazz, and folk nuances into ancient Sanskrit mantras. His voice is well trained through years of studying Sanskrit and chanting for hours a day, year after year. "I took mantras that are ten thousand years old and combined them with a musical style that makes the benefit of the mantras accessible and appealing to modern listeners," says Girish. But rather than translating the mantras, he kept the integrity of the Sanskrit sounds intact for a reason. "When you chant, the mantra acts as a portal to the presence of the deity whose name you're chanting. There's this whole energy field built up around a mantra that has been used for thousands of years and has this vortex of spiritual power built around it," he explains. A remarkable cast of performers participated in and supported the making of Reveal. These include top female vocalists Donna De Lory, Wah!, CC White and Snatam Kaur. Saxophone, keyboards, electric sitar and cello add tremendous texture and flavor. But most impressive is Girish's effort in conceptualizing, writing for, singing on, and performing multiple instruments throughout the recording. Though it is deeply rooted in the wisdom and spiritual knowledge of the Vedas, listening to Reveal is fun and light-hearted

I'm new to some of eastern influenced music. I've worked in the music business for many years with rock and pop artists, but I wanted to expand my horizons. Until I came across this Girish CD, my favorites have been Dave Stringer, Krishna Das, and David Parson. My new favorite of the genre is Reveal. The entire album is amazing. I especially can't stop listening to Hanuman.

I highly recommend this CD. I'm looking forward to seeing what Girish does in the future too!!!

5 out of 5 stars EXTRA-ORDINARY!.......2005-01-19

Upon first listening to REVEAL, I found myself intoxicated by ancient sounds woven together by the modern hands of an artist who truly understands the soul's desire to experience something deeply transcendent. Strong, earthy tones permeate mantras often thought inaccessible are now open to many in this cross-culturally infused album. Girish's languid voice takes us on a journey where inspiring, heart-felt expression is mixed with a groove all its own. These subtle, jazz-like compositions set REVEAL apart from other chant albums, allowing those who may not usually swim in these waters a chance to dive in and feel immediately at home.

To create an album with a unique sound, both vocally and instrumentally, is rare. To uplift and heal the spirit as well is...extraordinary!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD.......2004-11-09

"Reveal" by Girish is a CD of articulate beauty, accessible devotion and amazing musicianship. Girish weaves ancient Sanskrit mantras with contemporary and inventive melodies to bring chant out of the ashram and into the living room.

I love this CD. I'm instantly enveloped by Girish's hypnotic vocals and lush arrangements every time I listen to it. His voice is deep and fluid, expressing the emotional calling of Kirtan through melodies that you come away singing. Yes, I find myself singing in Sanskrit, understanding the meaning even if I don't know what the words themselves mean, being connected to an ancient intelligence on a visceral level.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2004-10-17

Girish's beautiful sound is overlain with a palpable sense of devotion that speaks to a place deep inside. When friends are over and I play it, it never goes unremarked, and this is true whether or not they are from a Hindu tradition. It's one of my absolute favorite cds.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2004-05-02

If it wasn't for the night --
so cold this time of year
The stars would never shine so bright
so beautiful and clear . . .

So starts David Wilcox's most hauntingly beautiful release to date. Filled with spiritual longing and wisdom, this is a beautiful sounding and beautifully written and beautifully performed CD.

The overall tone of this CD is fairly mellow, but the underlying musicianship shows an intricacy that is stunning, especially on repeated listens, which is what you will want to do when you encounter this almost perfect release.

2 out of 5 stars what happened to the voice?.......2004-01-19

I have been so thankful for the existence of David Wilcox for years now. I find it very difficult to find music I really and consistently like and David has provided that. I've seen him in concert almost more than James Taylor and I don't go to many concerts. I recently pulled out the CD for another listen and actually felt a little physically ill. The gradual introduction of Christianity and the strained, increasingly breathy quality of his voice leaves me feeling restless and annoyed. Pitch even suffers on this album. I find myself yearning for him to sing out with a full voice. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I'm not sure I'll buy the next one and I own every album he ever produced. Sing out, David, and keep it so everyone can relate to your lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Work.......2003-12-10

To start off, let me say that the musical craftsmanship on this album is outstanding. In my opinion, Dave has reached back and rediscovered the intricate, strong style he displayed on his first two albums. Backed by excellent musicians (including an almost unmentioned Phil Keaggy on bass) and fine production values, Wilcox's melodies jump out and take hold of the listener.

Lyrically, the album is probably the most spiritual of Dave's work. Many of the songs make allusions or outright references to Dave's continuing journey of faith including the title track, "If It Wasn't for the Night" and "Native Tongue". There are, however, other ideas explored, including the beauty of a child's view of the world on "Radio Man".

I recommend this album without reservation. It is an excellent alternative to much of what passes for music as offered by the mainstream music industry.

5 out of 5 stars Great album - Thought provoking, insightful..........2003-04-18

This is a classic David Wilcox album...all of this music comes from his heart, from a deeper place than even some of his previous deep music. As usual, his playing is great (Phil Keaggy plays bass on some of the pieces...is that cool or what?!) But it's always his lyrics that keep me coming back for more. Plus he signed my head when I was bald, so how could I not adore him?!

3 out of 5 stars not his strongest work, by far.......2003-04-16

Usually, David's CD's take a few listens to really take hold. Only "How Did You Find Me Here" grabbed me from the first song. The music here sounds too familiar. The lyrics...maybe the metaphorical thing has gotten out of hand. Oh, there are a few memorable tracks, but overall, I was disappointed. (and I'm a die-hard DW fan)

Franc D'Ambrosio, who starred as the legendary masked man in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award winning musical The Phantom of the Opera for over six years, was honored with the title of the longest running Phantom in the world after bringing more than five million theater goers to their feet over 2,600 times. On Dec. 12th he was a special correspondent for ACCESS HOLLYWOOD on the red carpet at the NYC premiere of Joel Schumacher's film musical The Phantom of the Opera at the Ziegfeld Theater.

You will most likely recall D'Ambrosio from his highly publicized portrayal of Al Pacino's opera singing son, Anthony Corleone, in The Godfather Part III (after an international search lasting more than a year.)

3 out of 5 stars A Broadway Fan and A Figures Skating Fan's Idea of the Longe.......2005-06-04

When I saw Brian Boitano's Skating Spectacular, Franc who seems to be a friend of Brian's Sang while Brian skated. They said that he had played The Phantom longer than anyone else.

Therefore, I bought this CD. When I started listening to the first songs, I could not believe that Franc had played the Phantom. His voice sounded too young. His version of the song from PIPPIN did not sound as good to me as an American Idol Contestant's had. I thought he might be satirizing Broadway.

When I came to song Number 11, my opinion changed. His songs from then on, were great. I have listened to the HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA hundreds of times. I don't think I could tell his MUSIC OF THE NIGHT from Michael Crawford's.

If you would enjoy a quirky version of Broadway songs mixed with really good ones, get this CD. If you want straight Broadway, try Ron Raines.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT LUNGS.......2005-01-31

I saw Franc on his concert tour recently and was very impressed. He has sure got some lungs... I like the fact that in person, he sounds just like the recordings on the CD. I have been collecting Broadway Cds for years now and I have quite the collection. The thing that stands out with Franc's CD is the wonderful range of songs. I especially liked the medeleys and the inclusion of some songs that have been my favorites from shows but never seem to be recorded too often. His vocal range is great as well....and an incredible high light voice. His vocal characteristics are reminiscent of Mandy Patinkin, whom I also really like. I will listen to this one for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars Phranc unmasked---at last!!!!.......2005-01-30

I saw Franc for the first time when I was 13 and my parents suprised me one weekend by taking me to see The Phantom of the Opera for the first time in San Fransisco, and I swear my life has never been the same since. Franc was so captivating and soulful in his performance I doubt there was a dry eye in the house---I was awe-stricken. In fact, I was so moved by his perfomance that I dragged my parants back up to SF the very next week to see it again! I was so compelled by the play that I got my hands on any phantom book and music I could find, and the Phantom has been a permanent part of my life ever since. However, I regret that for years I did not think about the man behind the mask---Franc. I had been listening to the origanl London cast album for years because that's the only Phantom recording available, and it didn't even occur to me to look for other recordings Franc might have done until it had been so long that he wasn't playing the role anymore I didn't remember the names of any of the cast members we saw, but after an hour or so of research on the internet I was able to track him down and was thrilled to find out he had just released this album (his debut!) and I bought it without thinking twice. The first half of this album is very lively and fun and you can really hear Franc's energy and charisma, and the second half---all ballads---is stunningly beautiful. Franc sings his heart and lungs out, and his upper register is downright haunting! For anyone who has seen Franc perform, or just loves well-sung show tunes, this CD is a must. The only real draw back to the album is that the first few tracks are medleys so you only get to hear parts of each song instead of the enitre song, but it is still very nicely done and each song leads into the next almost seemlessly. Also, if you are interested in the original SF cast of The Phantom of the Opera, they resently held and recorded a Christmas benifit for AIDS called Crhistmas Center Stage and you can enjoy a variety of Christmas songs peformed by various members of the SF cast! It's a beuatiful CD and very fun to listen to at that time of the year or year-round! Now, one last suggestion: if you like broadway songs, a great companion to Franc's CD is Lisa Vroman's Broadway album (I think it's called Classic Broadway). Lisa played the Phantom's beloved Christine with Franc for years and both of their voices are truly stunning and extremely enjoyable to listen to.

Product Description

Mary Beth Maziarz’s long-awaited new release, "Wish", continues in the tradition of Maziarz's other fine albums with strong writing, infectious rhythms, and heartstrings-a-pullin', but is infused with a freshness and energy that is absolutely stunning. The 14-song album covers a lot of territory; from the taunting, soaring dark opening of "Every Little Thing You Ever Wanted" to the sighing, parting glance, "Til Then," the listener is in for an emotion-filled, rich ride. Maziarz defines life's moments in a seemingly effortless way -- in songs like "This Is Our Life," "The Girl Goes Round," and "Lonesome in Love," listeners may find themselves awestruck as images from their lives (or others’) play like movies across glorious three-minute spans. But "Wish" carefully sidesteps the sappy, mushy paths that so many singer-songwriters tread. This is thinking-person's music: lyrics filled with ideas and poetic phrasing leaning up against rootsy, grooving rhythms. It's a rare, irresistible combination of simple and lush -- a gorgeous mix of clarity and complex. The difference between "Wish" and Maziarz's other albums seems to emerge most in the instrumentation; a fresh, taut production and fantastic energy inhabits the whole record. Although less pianocentric than her other records, "Wish" is still keyboard-driven, utilizing vintage Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Hammond B3 sounds to strong effect and texture. And Maziarz's voice is, well, something special. Honest, clear, rich, smooth, growling, sly, kind, dreamy, haunting, sexy; these qualities all emerge from her vocal on “Wish”, while somehow never leaving its recognizable foundation of alto intimacy. "Wish" is not easily classifiable -- is it pop? Rock? AAA? Alt-funk-folk? -- but ground-breaking, really interesting music rarely is simple to describe. Maziarz has found solid success in soundtracks, which these songs will surely support, but most interesting may be the way these songs become soundtracks in your life.

Meaningful lyrics combined with Mary Beth's incredible voice make this a truly memorable album. Highly recommend it!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Wish Come True.......2005-09-26

Mary Beth Maziarz has completely outdone herself with the release of her album "Wish". This album is a watershed event for her and her fans, demonstrating Mary Beth's maturity, confidence, and vocal and instrumental musicianship. "Wish" is Mary Beth's most dynamic, energetic, insightful, and musically enjoyable work she has released. The fourteen tracks on "Wish" move the listener from the quiet intimacy of piano and vocal solos through lush arrangements with string ensemble to full out bluesy pop with guitars, synthesizers, and drums. Mary Beth worked with producer Craig Poole to make "Wish" the most complete and thoroughly musical album she has released.

"Wish" centers on a general theme fitting the album's title. The songs focus on various aspects of desire, whether it is longing, yearning, hoping, craving or wanting. The album gently asks questions of the listeners, presents musical landscapes to ponder and review, and provides windows to various types of desire in relationships. The songs are intertwined into this singular theme, but are independently vibrant and complete in and of themselves. Picking highlights on "Wish" become challenging for the listener because every song on the album is entirely enjoyable. Personal favorites include "This is Our Life", "Lone Boat on the Harbor", "True Believer", and "Til Then".

The song list is provided below:

1. Every Little Thing You Ever Wanted
2. Better
3. This Is Our Life
4. Deeper Love
5. Circle of Desire
6. The Road
7. My Deep Blue Love For You
8. Now You're Here
9. Lone Boat on the Harbor
10. The Girl Goes 'Round
11. Lonesome in Love
12. Goin' On
13. True Believer (as heard on "Bianca - Wege Zum Gluck")
14. Til Then

This is the sixth studio album that Mary Beth Maziarz has released independently on her Musaic Records label. Clearly, this is Mary Beth's best and most complete musical work.

Buy this album and know with confidence that it is one of the best albums you will ever own.

Album Description

The soundtrack, written and performed by Chris Michie, to the remarkable movie that is the true story of a Bohemian St. Francis and his remarkable relationship with a flock of wild red-and-green parrots. Mark Bittner, a dharma bum, former street musician in San Francisco, falls in with the flock as he searches for meaning in his life, unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs.

"I watched them for several years with tremendous curiosity. What were wild parrots doing in San Francisco? Then one day a few of them flew to my fire escape, and my whole life changed." From Mark Bittner's memoir "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" Published in January, 2004 by Harmony Books.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Michie's Music Is A Beautiful Partner To The Film.......2007-04-16

This sound track is a beautiful, sensitive, lovely dance partner to Judy Irving's film, "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." From "Cherry Blossoms", to "Connor's Theme" and "Sophie and Connor", each melody transcends and compliments the film maker's art, one blending into the other perfectly. That Judy and Mark dedicated the film to Chris Michie and his music says so much about the quality, the personification, and the magic the music brought into focus. Contrary to the negative review, I can't think of a more appropriate kind of music than this moving, serene yet evocative guitar playing that blends so well with the key elements of the film: a parrot flock in flight; human interaction with nature; and preservation of the natural order. In a life filled with music, this sound track has to be considered Chris Michie's most significant work. When you listen to the music, you feel the musical interpretation of the events captured in the film-the highest compliment to give. Five stars for this one!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Music Touches the Heart.......2006-07-21

The subject of the movie in the trailer drew me in first and motivated me to see it right away - Awesome work, Judy! Well investigated, well documented, and well shared. And thank you, Mark! You are an inspiration! I must say though, the music motivated me to take the next step: I want the soundtrack! It fit the movie so well and created a remarkable atmosphere. I want Chris' music in my home!

Was I surprised by Max's comments! So much so I went to check him and his taste out. Sorry, what a waste of time! Max likes to hear himself write. Too bad he stopped by...

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down For Max.......2006-03-18

Max - what does "realistic dialogue (corrected your spelling)" mean, in a documentary? Are you mixing your metaphors? ALL dialogue in a documentary is realistic, or it is not a documentary. Get your terms straight before you start slagging something. And HOW, pray tell, did the editing ruin the movie? There is no meat in your argument, let alone brain tissue! Try to make your thoughts cogent, and worth the time to read. Did you have a different kind of composer's music in mind, and who and what. Etc. ad nauseam.

If you have not heard the album, and need a "similar" tag, my wife says Chris Michie's music is akin to a wilder form of Craig Chaquico, who I thought had been the guitar player for the opening sequence of film.

The film was dedicated to Chris Michie, who died after making this wonderful music. If the filmmaker and the subject of the film are satisfied with Michie's product, pay more attention to that. Mark was too kind.

5 out of 5 stars The music is GOOD.......2006-02-23

I'm Mark Bittner, the human subject of "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. I want to clear up the reason Judy (with some input from me) chose Chris Michie's music for the film: We LIKED it--a lot. To give it only one star and call it cheesy and campy is ludicrous. No matter what he thinks of the music, one star demonstrates "attitude," which makes Miller-loran's review untrustworthy. I especially love the opening track "Cherry Blossoms." Fluid playing, good melody, integrated parts, interesting harmonies. It's great stuff, sincere stuff. I've played professionally, and I've listened to everything from Buell Kazee to Ornette Coleman, and I know that all that really matters in music (or any other art) is sincerity. I avoid like the devil commercialism and hipness, equally useless qualities. I'm guessing that Max has a hipness problem.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-01-31

Unless you have heard the soundtrack and agree with the previous reviewer don't pay any attention to it. Chris Michie was a great talent as anyone who is framiliar with his music and bio would know.

This is a great soundtrack.

I picked this cd up after buying James Figurine's Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake. As a newbie to this music, Heartfelt was the cd that left me wanting more. The music is deeper and more mature than Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake but stills has a light and even futuristic feel to it. I love the man/woman songs and duets that seem to answer eachother. This cd is truely heartfelt. Heartfelt is a must buy!

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-01-12

Not what I expected but was pleasantly surprised. Different funky beats make it nice to lounge to.

5 out of 5 stars Love it as synth pop.......2006-07-29

While not what I was originally expecting, I have come to love this album. It has a more subdued sound than some of the noise onslaughts that other synthpop acts put out, but this all fits in with the band's 'thing'. That 'thing' is being self-aware. The instrumental track is called "Instrumental", and the bonus track is called "Bonus", and with other songs about writing songs, and exceptionally poetic lyrics, this album all comes together in a way that makes me love it.

If you're a fan of DNTEL, you should not hesitate to purchase this.

    5 out of 5 stars Trust me.......2005-07-24

It's a shame they don't have samples for this album, because it is absolutely excellent. A little weird, a lot electronic, boy/girl singing, and HEART. If you like Stars, Lali Puna, Stereolab, Architecture in Helsinki, or maybe even Postal Service, you'll like this. It's a little more enjoyable, and a little more mature than Transportation/communication and Reconfigurine (though those are great albums as well)

I have just recently discovered Muriel Anderson through a CD entitled "Theme for Two Friends" which featured her friend Julie Adams, a cellist. This limited edition CD was absolutely beautiful, which led me to do more research on her music. I am impressed with her versatility which shines in the "Heartstrings" album. It is obvious she loves music and is able to express her passion and sensitivity through a various types of music. I am partial to the more melancholic themes, but it is all wonderful. This album album is refreshing! Thanks Muriel.
