This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Let me first preface this by saying that by no means should I be considered the biggest Everette Harp fan. He has always made good CDs, but there were always some songs that spoiled the CD. However, that started to change when 'Better Days' was released, which until now was my favorite Harp CD. 'In the Moment' not only exceeds that CD, which is by no means a small feat, it is already one of my favorite Smooth Jazz CD of all time. I could go on and on about which cuts are my favorites, but the problem is I can not pick one. They all have a different flavor, and are well written. Ultimately, it is like taking the best elements of all of Everette's CD's and putting them into one. Whether you are just a smooth jazz aficionado or an Everette Harp fan, this CD is an absolute must have!

Prior to listening to this CD, I personally did not know much about Everette Harp. I must tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I enjoyed six out of ten cuts on this CD (huge satisfaction). The CD has an eclectic but rich flavor about it. Definitely worth your time and definitely a sublime pleasure for the contemporary jazz enthusiast. It is safe to say I will be adding more of his work to my jazz collection.

Sax man Everette Harp has been on the whole Smooth Jazz ride, from the early days when it was called "New Adult Contemporary" 'til now, when it's a brand name. The thing that I've always liked and been impressed with about Everette's work is that he always stays true to the real roots of this music...jazz. That vibe always comes through in his playing, whether he's jamming or playing it sweet. He's been inspired by legends like Grover and Stanley Turrentine and Hank Crawford, he's been a sideman for so many superstars I'd use up my entire allotment of words just to list them. IN THE MOMENT is his 7th solo album, and his Shanachie debut. It has exceeded my expectations, and they were high to begin with! He's surrounded himself on this project with the best of the best, including special guests Norman Brown, George Duke, Jonathan Butler, Chuck Loeb, and Paul Jackson, Jr. The tunes are all originals, and vary from compelling ballads ("Just as You Are" and the title track) to funky jams ("Back to Basics" and "No Bout a Doubt It"), and of course the album is loaded with radio-friendly Smooth Jazz hits, including the first single, "Monday Speaks," which features Norman Brown. And yes, all these tunes have that solid jazz underpinning that stays true to the roots. I really dig Everett Harp's new CD, IN THE MOMENT, and recommend it as a must-have. In The Moment is aptly titled since I think these last two releases are some of Everette's best work. Too bad the format gets so little attention. However this project should get lots of attention. EH's distinctive sax voice is joined by plenty of incredible talented musicians. Norman Brown joins EH on the first Chuck Loeb written track. Paul Jackson Jr. (arguably one of the best musicans on the guitar)joins EH for 2nd track. George Duke is featured on the 3rd track. Paul is featured on the 6th track. One of my personal favorites Jonathan Butler is featured vocally and on guitar on teh 9th track and finally Chuck Loeb is featured on the 10th. Despite the guest appearances of so many influential musicians, this CD is assuredly Everette Harp. Truthfully, it is a CD like this that makes me happy that musicians are still releasing entire projects since so much of the material released has 1 or 2 good tracks and the rest is .... not worth the money. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I am continually amazed by the healing power of music. Especially harp music. As those who know me know, my healing from a debilitating stroke came about in large part due to the improvisational healing harp of one man: Paul Baker.

Mr. Baker is such a talented person. He could have chosen to record albums using his vast knowledge and technique on the large and impressive concert harp, piano, or organ. However, for posterity, he chose to record improvisations for healing on the smaller and more personal celtic harp.

How does one capture the essence of such music in words? His two albums, "The Tranquil Harp" and "The Ladder of the Soul" are groundbreaking in their simplicity and breadth. And each one has its own unique place in my life.

"The Tranquil Harp" helped me most in my physical healing. Its music is very basic, simple, and gentle. It has brought, and continues to bring, growth and strength to every part of my physical being. To play it is to bathe in regeneration and light.

"The Ladder of the Soul" continues this healing on the emotional and spiritual planes. It connects our essence to the divine in such a way that we emerge purer and more aware of our true being and purpose in this life. This is real health. Divine health. What a gift to be brought to us by one man. This album is so aptly named as it proves that the harp truly is "the ladder between earth and heaven," connecting us to the divine safely and lovingly.

Thank you, Mr. Baker, for sharing yourself in such a way that allows all of us to unfold in ourselves and in the world with true happiness and peace.

The Ladder of the Soul has become my favorite CD of all, and with good reason. I love this CD! It`s the most beautiful relaxing music I have ever listened to. If you have a stressful job or just want to unwind this is the CD for you. A cup of tea with Paul Baker is a peaceful way to end any day.

After several years without releasing new material, this CD makes the wait worth it. Everette's 6th release is his best work yet. Although I own all his music, I enjoy this one the most. With a number of new tunes, this original work demonstrates EH's alto sax-voice. Many of EH's guest artists are quite popular (Earl Klugh, George Duke, Norman Brown, Dwight Sills, Paul Jackson Jr.), they never overshadow EH's sound. Personal favorites are Kisses Don't Lie, Back In Your Arms, Hey Yeh.. heck everything on the entire CD!!!! Enjoy!

Once upon a time, there was a group called 101 North, ostensibly under the direction of the legendary George Duke. Their debut album gave rise to the soul classic 'So easy' which I still can't get enough of to this day. Their sophomore release was entitled 'Forever yours'. I shall always remember coming home, and hearing this awesome instrumental coming out of my brothers room. The track was 'Somewhere, sometime', and the sax belonged to one Everette Harp. Such grace, such power, wow, I was literally blown away. Everette has become a true original in the world of Jazz, his signature sound self evident whenever he picks up his horn to assist one of his numerous musical cohorts (see Stanley Clarke's 'Anna', as well as several tracks on the latest release by Regina Belle, although my all-time favourite Everette guest solo was for the Perri Sisters on 'Its been you' (far too brief though). Anyway, back to current affairs and straight out of the blocks, your treated to an uptempo killer called 'Kisses don't lie' with a resonating alto that could only come from Everette. I must admit, having received delivery of this CD some 2 weeks ago, I'm only just getting the time to listen to the tracks individually, and they really are straight out of the top drawer. I sent Everette an email not so long ago, asking why it takes so long between releases.....now I know why. This kind of music takes time to create. I also remember in one of my communicaes to him asking for another vocal outing, and he has duly obliged on the wonderful 'Time of our lives'. This guys talent really is god given. Earl Klugh is featured on yet another stormer entitled 'I remember when'. This track in particular just seeped into my brain one morning whilst I was getting ready for work. Two minutes into the track and I found myself standing next to my bedside CD player and marvelling at how I'd been lured in from afar! There are several other great tracks worthy of mention, particularly his collaboration with Norman Brown. Everette has gone from strength to strength since his incredible self-titled debut set from 1992, and its a great testament to his originality that over the last few years, he has created a truly unique sound that encompasses his love of the Akai EWI Wind Synthesiser. It works so well...just have a listen to 'Back in your arms' and you'll see exactly what I mean. A great effort Everette. Your comittment to the music is clear for all to see. If you keep making it, I'll keep on buying it. Hell Yeah!

like Najee and yes David Sanborn (there I said it!), that Bob Baldwin "Brazil Chill" thing, George Benson trying to be Joe, and whatever happened to Branford Marsalis. All For You throws down right out of the gate with Kisses Don't Lie, Harp exhibits excellent musicianship and it's a great tune. Other highlights are Norman Brown's playing on a couple of tracks, the track Can You Hear Me (okay Harp sounds like Kirk Whalum on this but what's wrong with that?). Speaking of washed up, he digs up Howard Hewitt for the bumpin' Groove Control and must have put out an A.P.B. for Earl Klugh and George Duke to play on I Remember When. It's Just the Way That You Love Me rounds out a set of strong playing, well written music and thoughtful production. By the way, this is NOT one of those CD BABY productions where the guy works at UPS during the day and makes a whole cd at night using the synthesized horn and "jazz drums" button on the Yamaha Keyboard he bought at Target. All For You brightens up a sorry 2004 for jazz releases-SNorah Jones releases a country cd and somehow it hits number one on the Jazz Charts and messes everything up for a couple of years....

    On the back of this CD it states this music is by "pioneer sound healers". I'm aware of the therapeutic effects that music can possess but I've never heard of "sound healers" before. I won't argue, I'll take their word for it. One thing I do know - this is incredibly beautiful and effective music for meditating, relaxing and falling asleep.

    Some numbers contain the serene bliss of nature sounds right up front combined with soothing melodies while others keep the ocean, wind and whatever else softly layered in the background. A few more numbers are accompanied by whispery female vocals. All the tracks flow together nicely without any abrupt changes in mood.

    On a few occasions I've listened to this CD while working on the computer - right now is a good example - and have noticed less tension in my neck and shoulders and my breathing slower and deeper. Anything that succeeds at the demanding task of coaxing my twitchy little brain into an even partial state of tranquility truly deserves my highest recommendation.

    As an energetic healer for over 15 years I am quite aware of the profound influence that subtle energies can have in terms of providing general healing effects. This release from Sequoia Records contains an extraordinary compilation of the most soothing and meditative tracks from the very best of their label artists, perfectly sequenced into a beautifully fluid and peaceful journey that uplifts and nourishes the soul. When I put this on for my client's sessions the music really assists in melting their tensions away and creates a wonderful sound environment within which to do my healing work. I especially like the two new tracks from the Gordon brothers, Healing Passage and Healing Ocean and was delighted to find Sophia's Sweet Surrender contained on the release. The CD is rounded out well with fantastic tracks from Gary Stadler (one of my favorite Sequoia artists), Zingaia and Solaria. All in all Musical Healing is an incredibly harmonious, gorgeously balanced and profoundly powerful album. Take two tracks and forget about needing to call your doctor.

    This compilation album from the folks at Sequoia Records comes with several unexpected gifts, chief among them that the exquisitely sensuous singer Sophia has joined the Sequoia family. Her "Sweet Surrender" remains a particular favorite, and I'm delighted that it appears on Musical Healing. Other gifts include three previously unreleased tracks "Twin Souls" by Solaria, and "Healing Passage" and Healing Ocean" by David and Steve Gordon.
    Many of the tracks on Musical Healing include lushly textured nature sounds with bird songs, waves, and running water weaving in and out. Gary Stadler, Stephannie, Zingaia and Deborah Martin all have tracks on the album, making Musical Healing a great introduction to the softer side of Sequoia Records. Flute, harp, piano, guitar and angelic vocals join the nature sounds, creating a stress-free atmosphere conducive to massage, meditation, yoga, Reiki, and other healing modalities. Profoundly relaxing and spiritually uplifting, Musical Healing is a journey to the healing heart.

      For the most part, I might call this album rather good, but not great. However, one track brings the album to a higher level: Y Llinyn Arian/The Thread of Life. This has to be one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard. The melancholy passages at the beginning and the end and the light-hearted dance in the middle provide a wonderful contrast and perfect symmetry. This track alone makes the album worth the purchase.

      Perhaps you've listened to performances on the pedal/symphonic harp or the folk harp, but if you've never heard the Welsh triple harp, you have a wonderful surprise awaiting you with this CD. Robin Huw Bowen's playing is spectacular - the only thing better is being at one of his live performances. The tracks that are my personal favorites include The Day, The Thread of Life, The Bells of the Old Country, and Farewell to the Days of my Youth. So put your feet up, close your eyes, and release the cares of the day as this lovely music washes over you.

      I am fairly new in Celtic (should it, really, be Keltic?), music I found the playing magnificent. The warmth he gets from his intrument the sonority are really great. Songs in themselves are very attractive. As a beginer, I do not see what better introduction to this wonderful world, there could be.

      I saw Everette perform for the first time in the City of Celebration,Florida during the Best of LOQ 103.0 free concert. My wife had always been a big fan of Everette; however, I was some what unfamiliar with his work, hearing an occassional, tune or two on the local jazz station. But on this day in October of 1999, I heard what was truly a mood altering experience. Everette performed the title track of his CD, "Better Days " with bassist and former NBA star Waymond Tinsdale. Both Everett and Waymond minstered to my soul with the sweet sounds of joy which emerged from their instruments. Since that day, I have come to know and enjoy all of his music.

      "Better Days" is Everette's finest contribution to the saxaphone and smooth jazz, surpassing, in this writer's opinion anything that Kenny "whats that initial" and Boney "something" has ever done.

      Everette Harp's talent is a gift! This CD, as well as his others, are great listening. His live performances are like a breath of fresh air! I have seen him perform live many times with Kenny Loggins and always promises a great show.

      Initially I had a hard time getting in to this CD but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. I saw Harp in concert twice this past summer which helped me to like the CD even more. It is a decent follow up to 'whats going on' which was a masterpiece in my opinion. I especially enjoyed his collaboration with wayman tisdale

      The audio quality is great, as is most often the case with Reference Recordings. However, there are far better chorales and compositions than represented on this cd. The content strikes me as saccharine. We're not allowed to mention other recordings in reviews, but I put one idea of some good choral music (chorale la) in the recommended instead section.

      I really like heoric choral/organ/orchestra music. But this is the ONE disc that I think everyone should experience. I recently played this disc at a HiFi Event in Norway. About half the listeners clamored for info on where to buy it. This one is magic, trust me.
