De La's debut represented a new path for hip-hop, a reaction to conventions that had turned into clichés. It was friendly and playful enough to cross over to a pop audience (thanks to Prince Paul's production, which found the funk hiding inside Steely Dan and "Schoolhouse Rock"), but complicated and tough enough to be hugely influential in the hip-hop world. Cryptic but ecstatic, and sometimes sexy (especially the ingenious double-entendre "Buddy"), Trugoy and Posdnuos's lyrics invented a "new style of speak," dense with self-invented slang and metaphors. The hits, including "Say No Go" and "Me Myself And I," are delightful, but the little sketches and sound-experiments between them make the whole disc flow effortlessly. --Douglas Wolk

for a long time I felt this was their best album. Now, I must own it in CD, (for my iPod & personal library). This is a classic!
Rap for Sentient Beings.......2007-04-15
You know the typical gangsta/hardcore listener? A 15-year-old white boy from the 'burbs who wants to be a man but his mom won't let him have a really loud car? The kind who writes reviews like "u got 2 get dis its da shiz"? They'll hate this album.
Now, you know the musically adventurous, intelligent listener who avoids rap because they think it's all gangsta/hardcore? The kind of sentient being who can handle the concept of chords and knows the difference between *your* and *you're*? This is the person you should buy this album for.
Even if you don't think you'll like rap, this is an album worth checking out. It's not the stereotypical inmate-screaming-over-a-background-of-falling-skillets [c]rap everyone's sick of. This is smooth, clever, funny, creative spoken-word music. That's the key; it's *musical.* There are breezy melodic hooks under witty, deft vocals with just enough punch to be classed as rap.
Sure, it's Old School, but Old School's never gotten old, while a lot of the other genres have become derivative, repetitive, and stale. You'll like this CD from the beginning, and you'll keep listening to it, because it's inventive and creative. Whether you're new to rap or a fan looking for something new and interesting, this is a great buy.
Definition Of The Word "Awesome" (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-26
De La Soul's (consisting of Posdnuos, Maceo, and Trugoy)1989 debut "3 Feet High And Rising" is considered one of the most important debuts in music history. I have to agree with that statement. Me, this album is nothing but music to have fun while listening to. A lot of their albums are remerable to come across. There is not much I can say here that hasn't already have been said here.
This album has a lot of remerable tracks on here. I would say their biggest one would be "Me Myself And I", and it sounds so fresh today as if I were listening to it back in '89. A lot of their tracks that they made, people thought they were hippies, but that would be addressed throughout this album. Most of their music is just to make you laugh and have fun, like on one of the interludes "Can You Keep A Secret".
This album is completely produced by Prince Paul (one of the most underrated producers). The song "Eye Know" has one of the most fantastic beats that I heard in a while, especially when it comes to me listening to albums from the 80's. "The Magic Number" is also a great beat to enjoy.
And if you purchased this after 2001, you receive a bonus disc. The bonus disc contains eight tracks that were either remixes or pulled off of soundtracks. A great addition towards this album if you ask me.
As for anything to have any problems about, I have only one. I'm kinda mad that the remix of "Buddy" is not on here, nor on the bonus disc. That is a small dissapointment, but I will learn to live with it. Other than that, this is an album that you will enjoy time and time again. De La Soul debut is sort of like party music, but at the same time, make you daydream. This is one album that is highly recommend to any music listener from any genre. I'm not sure if this album is out of print, but if you see it for a reasonable price, go ahead and get it.

De La changed the game and paved the way for ATCQ.......2006-12-25
De La Soul was ill prepared for the success they would achieve on 3 Feet High and Rising. They were immediately tagged hip hop hippies due to their daisy age fascination and found themselves in a public identity crisis. In 2006, groups would love to have that type of exposure no matter what people peg them as. Anyways that's the past. 3 Feet is a classic due to it's unconventional sampling, rhymes and just straight left field approach.
Top Joints:
Eye Know (My personal favorite, with the Steeley Dan "Peg" sample)
Potholes in my Lawn
Say No Go
Buddy (Classic)
Me Myself and I (Classic)
One of hip hop's most original and important albums.......2006-12-12
The Long Island trio De La Soul's debut "3 Feet High and Rising" is one of the most original, different rap albums you will ever hear. It's so creative and humorous and is just so great in so many ways. The album ushered in a new movement of thought in rap music. De La Soul took a very light and humorous approach to hip hop at a time where the angry, hard rappers seemed to be all there was. Posdnous and Trugoy are still truly talented and intelligent MCs, though, and they cover some relevant social topics despite their constant humor. Musically this album is also great, the sampling and horns are so catchy and always keep my head bobbing when I listen to this. This sound would be imitated a lot throughout the nineties, and for good reason. This album was also among the first to do the whole skit/interlude concept on a rap album, with an intro and outro and interludes throughout the disc. There are a lot of short songs here, contributing to the albums 24 song tracklist. Along with Jungle Brothers, this was among the first of the Native Tongues movement, and it was a trendsetter and a pioneer. This album is really funny and has a lot of replay value, it's one of the most original and important rap albums and one I recommend to all.
After the games show-themed intro, the album begins with "The Magic Number," an immensely fun and catchy song that sets the mood well. "Change in Speak" has great horns and a jazzy, funky beat with good raps. "Can U Keep a Secret?" is one of the short songs that I mentioned that is just really funny, it always makes me laugh. "Jenifa Taught Me" tells an awkward story of high school, like always it is well produced and humorous. The excellent "Ghetto Thang" and one of my favorite old school songs ever, "Eye Know," follow. "Eye Know" has a beautiful beat, with an inescapably catchy whistle and instrumental as well as a great hook, the raps are laidback and happy and the song is just great. The short "Take It Off" and "A Little Bit of Soap" precede "Tread Water," a relevant metaphorical track that chronicles conversations the rappers had with animals in the jungle. "Potholes in My Lawn" is more vintage De La, as are "Say No Go" and "Plug Tunin'." "Buddy" introduced A Tribe Called Quest to the world, and "Me Myself and I" is undoubtedly one of hip hop music's finest tracks. The encouraging lyrics are one of a kind, and the horns and chorus are still widely known even almost twenty years later, this track is so catchy and well produced. The album ends with four more tracks that really hold their weight and end the album on a great note, including "This Is a Recording 4 L.I.F.E.," "D.A.I.S.Y. Age," and another mix of "Plug Tunin'."
I think "3 Feet High and Rising" is a classic on the level of some of the east coast's best, and even though today it might be a little dated and often overlooked it's still really fun to listen to. This album showed better than any other that hip hop music could just be plain fun. I recommend it to anyone with taste for older and creative hip hop music, it's a great addition for any collection.

Pete Rock loves horns the way other DJs and producers love drums. It's this obsession with funky horn breaks that sets Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth apart from regular hip-hop bassheads. With its crucial James Brown breaks layered between trumpet and sax loops, coupled with the laid-back vocals of Smooth and Rock, Mecca and the Soul Brother--their first full-length--struts back and forth on that line between rap and soul. Rock's production style is peerless, funky on "If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right" and sexy on "Lots of Lovin'." Smooth's liquid freestyle delivery (notably on "Straighten It Out" and "They Reminisce Over You") has been echoed in other skilled MCs (see Common's work). And with their combined skills, Mecca stands up without ever really dating itself. --Todd Levin

Die Hard Fan.......2007-07-05
Put simply, They are the reason I like hip-hop." They were ahead of their time. What a shame!" I wish they would make up and be friends again. They had 2 mind blowing complete albums. Most underrated duo. Sad day for society when they split. Hip and cool, yet socially and politically conscious. If your reading this, you guys are sorely missed! The game has never recovered! Amazing music where we don't have to kill each other in every other line. You guys were of a 'different cloth.
-It would be a dream come true for "Return of 'Mecca and the Soul Brother." 5+ stars.

Follow up to the initial release all souled out EP. Mecca and the soul brother is the full length release that displayed the amazing dj skills of the legendary pete rock and the fantastic lyrics of CL smooth. Rhymes, beats , and life are the main themes that make this a dope album from now until eternity. I wish these brothers could get along so they can make a current release that is just as dope as this one.

This is Rap, Rap before the suits decided rap was something they could turn bad, and sell like crack.
Fun, uplifting music, an album you can enjoy from beginning to end. Strongly Recommended!
Ridiculous.......2007-04-06
It's kind of ridiculous how incredible this album is and how it's gotten very little play and hype compared to D4L or Mistah Fab. They made no chart-topping hits, but I guarantee every song is good.

One of the first albums to challenge hip-hop's machocratic sovereignty, Salt-N-Pepa's Hot, Cool & Vicious takes as its musical model Run-D.M.C.'s potent distillation of streetwise repartee, hard-ass bluster and beatbox rhythms. Determined to say it loud and say it proud, r-r-r-rappers Cheryl "Salt" James and Sandy "Pepa" Denton wield their womanhood like an urban-jungle machete, busting unfaithful lovers in "Chick on the Side," threatening female competitors "just for spite" in "I'll Take Your Man," dishing distaff disses at Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick in "The Showstopper," and condemning mindless male promiscuity in "Tramp." With its aerobic BPMs and synth-pop hook, the Top 20 hit "Push It" is the album's most obvious--and most effective--bid for dancefloor immortality. --Greg Siegel

Can't Knock A Classic.......2007-03-08
If you "like" SNP, you will "love" this album, particularly if you enjoy the simplicity and creativeness of old school hip hop. The beats are clean, the lyrics are fun, and the variation provided by the tracks keeps the album moving. And of all, knowing the signature track "Showstopper" and how it vaulted SNP's career takes the album up a tier.
Love it.......2007-03-07
Brings me back to high school when these songs were rap anthems for us. So glad to have Amazon to buy these old skool records (as we used to call them!)
Hot,, Cool, & Vicious debut album from the ladies........2006-05-27
When I was young I use to write down all the words to my favorite songs on this album by rewinding the cassette playa numerous times till I got it down pack.
This is one of the first albums to be released by an all-female rap group, Hot, Cool & Vicious is paced by its opening track, "Push It," one of the first rap songs to hit number one on the dance singles charts. Considering how little Salt-n-Pepa actually rap on "Push It," which is all about its instrumental hook, they maintain a surprisingly strong presence over most of Hot, Cool & Vicious.
Written and produced by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor and recorded by the original Salt-N-Pepa line up -- Cheryl "Salt" James, Sandy "Pepa" Denton and Latoya "Spinderella" Hanson (later replaced by Deidre "Spinderella" Roper) -- HOT, COOL & VICIOUS made Salt-N-Pepa the first female rappers to earn a Grammy nomination.
No, they aren't technical virtuosos on the mic, but their fairly basic raps are carried off with brash confidence and enthusiasm. Some of the other key tracks borrow ideas from outside sources: the single "Tramp" is a rap remake of the Otis & Carla soul classic, and "The Show Stopper" is an answer record to Doug E. Fresh's "The Show." The duo's sass comes across very well on "My Mic Sounds Nice" and "I'll Take Your Man," and they're equally assertive on "Chick on the Side."
If I would have to choose my favorite party tracks would be "Chick on the Side," "My Mike Sounds Nice," "Tramp" and "Push It," which topped the pop charts in 1987.

SALT N PEP DEFINATELY ARE ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES OF FEMALE RAP AND HIP HOP PERIOD. STILL TILL THIS DAY HAVE I SEEN OR HEARD A FEMALE GROUP ROCK THE MIC AS MANY YEARS AS THESE WOMEN. I LOVE THIS ALBUM MOST OF ALL. I THINK THEIR SOUND WAS MORE B BOYISH WITH THE 1ST SPIN THAN THE 2ND BUT THEY STILL MANAGED TO MAKE HITS... THEY ARE FEMALE LEGENDS IN THE RAP GAME !!!!!

De La Soul burned out on their own hype fast, and their dark, strange second album is a counter-blast to their image and hip-hop culture: perverse, dissatisfied, sometimes brilliant, sometimes out of control. Occasionally it seems mean-spirited--the single "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" finds them grousing about getting deluged by demo tapes, and "Kicked Out The House" is a nasty (if very funny) parody of hip-house. But no one's ever made a rap album that sounds like this. Sickly out-of-tune loops drift in and out; songs derail themselves with loud sneers, or give way to bizarre dialogues; Posdnuos and Trugoy chant together like the words have lost all meaning. The concept that ties the disc together---an imaginary radio station called WRMS--gives it an extra kick. --Douglas Wolk

Hip Hops Only Schizophrenic Self-Diss Concept Album.......2007-04-01
Back in 1989, a new tidal wave of music was cascading along the shores. The sounds of the Native Tongues were staking their claim as alternative rap pioneers. The world of hip hop would never be the same after "3 Feet High and Rising" which is considered by many as the greatest hip hop album to ever drop. However, being taunted by people as the hippies of hip hop, De La did something artisticly bold. Plagued by labels, due to their visual of flowers on "3 Feet High's" cover art, De La Soul killed their 'pyschadelic image' by illustrating a pot of dead daisies on their sophomore effort. Suddenly, "De La Soul Is Dead" showed a edgier dark side that flew over heads of the buying public and disallowed critics to really put a finger on it.
"De La Soul Is Dead" was a record attacking ignorance and gangsta posturing. The record starts off with a pack of goons who roughs up a young kid with a copy of the De La Soul tape and then they pop the tape in and harshly criticize each song at certain intervals. At the end of the record they throw the tape in the garbage stating, "no guns, no cursing; that's what rap music is all about...RIGHT". Although the album contains little profanity the message is loud and clear on the hardcore parody of "Afro Connections At The Hi 5". This is an underappreciated gem. De La calls in to question of all the acts who changed their sound to be grittier claiming they, "fell the FU-- OFF". Posdunous mockingly says, "now I hold my crotch because I'm top notch".
The album is not nearly enjoyable without the man behind the boards. Prince Paul is the mad scientist of hip hop, orchestrating a collage of samples that has yet to be duplicated. The albums first song "Oodles of O's" (a highlight on a classic album) has a dischordant loop that is endlessly catchy. The loopy bassline is like the hook and your attention is the bait and you can't help but get hooked and nod your head to this. "Peas Porridge" ranks amongst Prince Pauls best beats as De La Soul talks in witty double speak. Again, the song is broken up by people who trash De La Souls reputation. Maseo claims, "why do people think just because we speak peace we can't blow no joints" (I-I-I Don't Know). The most lighthearted jam has to be the single "Roller Skating Jam Called Saturday" which had a friend of mine mezmerized recently (especially with the 'Greece' sample thrown in the middle of the song)! "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" was actually an unlikely choice for the lead single. The upbeat production seemed cheery enough but the groups frustration with being burdened around third-rate demos was harsh to say the least. It is an incredibly playful song which got the group in copyright troubles. "Pass The Plugs" had many people flocking to YouTube to check out the hype around the Posdunous line, "Arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clappin' when Arsenio dissed them before their performance on the show.
Prince Pauls beats and the lyrics from "De La Soul Is Dead" have been sampled over and over again. You will be amazed at all of the fragments and ideas that came from this. On top of that, the record contains the greatest album liner note ever. Maseo states, "To the Amittyville community: you are the ones who say when people like us get successful we never come back to contribute to our community. Well we came to you on so many occasions and, in so many words, you said 'f--- De La Soul" and now I'm saying "f--- you"! Fitting with the albums theme it is a statement on people who pigeon hole rap as stagnated music failing to realize that it evolves from the same epicenter of other genres. "De La Soul Is Dead" is a testament to silence all those critics who say rap is not music. Honestly, if rap artists today took half the risks that De La took then hip hop would be a much better place.
Love this album, twenty years later.......2007-01-30
I bought this album thinking it was Soul To Soul, and was totally glad I had made that mistake. I played this cassette over and over- I loved so much of it that I couldn't even tell you what my favorite was, although Bitties In The BK Lounge is in it, certainly.
And long after it disintegrated, I would find myself humming or singing a snatch of something from this album.
So, for my 39th birthday last week, I bought it again. This time on CD, but I have no doubt that I'll feel exactly the same way I felt the first time I heard it.
Favorite Rap Album of Mine!!!.......2006-11-25
I remember going to buy this album back in '91, i believe. I remember staring at the cd cover with the broken pot and asking myself "what's that mean?". I was definitely confused. I popped in the cd and was completely surprised the with the big differences from "3 Feet High and Rising". I never thought anyone would be able to make an album as good as that again, but was proven wrong. To make an album as good and go in a total different direction is just a display of what pure genius DE LA SOUL is.
No longer in high school ('91,11th grade) I still find this album to be one of my favorites, if not my favorite of all time. I still have the original cd and now that im loading my whole cd collection into my PC, i noticed the scratches my disc has and came on here to possibly purchase a back up copy. Thats how good it is.
I suggest you buy it and enjoy a classic masterpiece that has withstood the test of time, not anywhere close to being dated at all.
10 stars.......2006-10-04
This has to be my favorite De La Soul LP out. While this record was released the presence of makin gangsta rap music was starting to rise and though some of that was good, I was even more excited that the TRUE HIP HOPPERS like De La kept it real even further by not conforming to the trend. Its one of my favorites and after listening to it, I'm sure it'll be one of yours. Peace
Another Hip Hop Classic from De La Soul.......2006-07-02
I rate this album just a bit better from '3 Feet High and Rising'....What an album this is...
First off, I think there's a big misconception about this album...Every critic and writer claims that this album was 'dark' and a sharp contrast from '3 Feet High and Rising'...Personally, I didn't think it was that much of a different album....Yeah, its unique and stands out on its own...But the same goes with all De La Soul albums: they all take on their own personality....I just don't think the music on here is either dark or a sharp contrast from '3 Feet High and Rising'...
Now back to the album...Just like 3 Feet High, this album is filled with skits and bit of satire...But it's done in a very fun and enjoyable way...It gives De La a personality and takes you into their world for an hour....Again, the production is flawless on here....My favorite tracks include the unforgettable "Roller Skating Jam named Saturdays", "Pass the Peas" "Millie pulled a Pistol on Santa" and "My brother's a basehead"....This album is jam packed w/ classic hip hop material tho...
Definately worth the purchase...Highly recommended...

Big Daddy Kane's 1988 debut still stands as a raw classic from one of hip-hop's most fruitful years. The production is end to end brilliant, with Juice Crew guru Marley Marl soundtracking Kane through nine furious cuts (and one absolute stinker, the slow jam "The Day You're Mine"). Marl's production has rarely sounded finer, a gritty chorus of drums and funk-soul samples that have since been immortalized. "Raw," "Just Rhymin' with Biz," and "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" are the certified anthems, but they're not the only highlights. Check the furious "Long Live the Kane" and "Set It Off" for Kane's up-tempo odes to himself. "I'll Take You There" and "Word to the Mother(Land)" were the obligatory (yet heartfelt) Nation nods, mandatory during this brief late-'80s period of Afrocentricity. Though his image would soon switch to that of a smoothed-out new jack playa, the memory of Kane as one of hip-hop's supreme lyrical rulers lives long on this masterpiece. --Hua Hsu
Customer Reviews:
The greatest bragging CD ever released.......2007-07-26
Yes, this is a CD mostly full of bragging, saying he's the best, but he does it well and drops some of the best battling lines ever. Seeing the lyrics will stun you, but his flow is one of the best ever. That's what clinched this record as a timeless record. Let's breakdown the album...
We start off with "Long Live The Kane". Which is a mix of political and battling rhymes. "No I'ma not Chinese/its just rhymes like these/That destroy an MC/with black belt degrees". 9/10
It is followed by "Raw(remix)". The original is what made KANE an underground figure and the impact of that one song was like an earthquake. Dropping jaw dropping rhymes with an untouchable flow. The chorus scratching is crazy. The entire song is filled with great lines and doesn't go more than 3 lines without saying something amazing. 10/10
"Set It Off" is in the same breath but even better flow and a better beat. What makes it better is that it starts right off the bat and the song just flows through. 10/10
Then is the loveman Kane that we will mostly see on his next albums, "The Day You're Mine". Some consider this filler, which I don't get. Yes, its different from the rest of the album, but that's the point. He wanted to cover the four major styles of rap(battling, comedy, political and love). Anyway, yes its cheesy but its a great love song. Kane continues his flow and nice lyrics even though its a different style. 9/10
"On The Bugged Tip" is a great team-up song with an unknown rapper, Scoob. Very nice and both do some rhymes. 9/10
Next is the infamous, "Ain't No Half Steppin'". No words can describe this song and theres a reason its so infamous. "You're just a butter knife, I'm a machete". 10/10
"I Take You There" is the political track on this CD". He's talking about a fantasy place where there is no violence, welfare, etc. Just forever peace and harmony. Amazing stuff. 10/10
"Just Rhymin' with Biz" is just that. They're basically rhyming with no topic. Funny stuff and Biz outshines Kane, crazy uh?. 9/10
"Mister Cee's Master Plan" is a song toward his DJ. Telling him thank you for the times and such. Its a good track but its one of the weakest tracks on this CD. 8.5/10
Another political song, "Word to the Mother (Land)". Very nice, but the beat is weird and brings down Kane. Sounds like he ran out of rhymes and is trying to make a short song, long. Still good but the weakest here. 8/10.
Closing Comments: As you can tell, Kane seems like he ran out of rhymes but the standouts are amazing. If you like Jeezy, don't get this. If you like hiphop, get it. If you wanna know hiphop and its history, get it. If you wanna know where these "battle" rappers got their inspiration from, get it. Classic, golden age hiphop. This is true old school and props to Mr. Marl for providing the production, as always. 5 stars.
-Peace
Long Live The Kane.......2006-09-22
Kane is the best emcee of all times, Rakim, G-Rap, Masta Ace are all nice. But nobody touches Kane. Why? Because he had a veratility that made him ahead of him time. This album isn't the best album of all time, but it's the best album of it's time. Kane outshines everyone, because he can do it all. Nobody else was battle rapping, smoothed out, a pimp and a teacher all on the same album. And Kane was the original sex symbol of Hip-Hop (sorry LL)
"Ain't No Half Steppin" is so smooth, but lyrically Kane kept it raw. "RAW" is as the title says. "Set It Off" shows Kane can rap ultra fast and still come off. Listen to his flow on any song off the album, it's meticlious. He pronounces every word so clearly, I honestly would put his flow on this album, which is 15 years old up against anyone today. And probably would still have it give it to Kane for most incredible flow. Every emcee today was either directly influenced by, or influenced by somebody who was influenced by Kane. He is that damn good, period.
I have got to give it up to Big Daddy Kane........2006-09-01
This classic debut showcase all his talents. When he was young and when nothing was or could hold him back. This album is one of the blueprints of hip-hop. Melle Mel said "hip-hop is to pick up the mic and CRUSH everything in front of you". Kane killed the mic and the rumored beef with the other greatest MC of the era, Rakim, had us on the edge of our seats. Until this day, his rhymes have maintained their intensity and even in 2006, are still considered to be some of the most lethal battle lyrics ever spit. I can't say no more what's already been said numerously.
Every track on 'Long Live The Kane' is a truly classic. The tracks that steps up to me are "Set It Off" "Just Rhymin' With Biz" "Ain't No Half-Steppin" and "Raw."
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hip-hop essential to hip-hop fans from every division.
This CD Contains 2 Of Hip Hop's Greatest Songs!.......2006-06-18
Big Daddy Kane is easily one of the top 3 lyricists of all-time. There is no disputing how good his lyrics were, but what separates him from all others (except his equal - Rakim) was his Flow. He took his lyrics and made them into an audio work of art. Listen to him string words together in Hip Hop's all-time number 1 bragging track (Ain't No Half-Steppin') and you are mesmerized by his delivery, then you skip back to the start, hit play and start trying to keep up with Hip Hop's smoothest MC.
This album contained more than just the best bragging track of all-time, it contained another hip hop classic that anyone who calls themself a hip-hop Head must know to be considered a member: RAW. BDK strings lyrics and his flow together with his killer voice over a cathy James Brown drum sample and you have old school magic.
I hate to echo the words of every other reviewer but when they are speaking the truth I don't mind: THIS IS A CLASSIC CD, PERIOD. If you love hip-hop or if you're new to Hip Hop, this is where your collection should start. As other's have said, there is only one filler track, and the rest all rate around 4 stars apiece. Do yourself a favour and avoid the garbage that hip hop is currently putting out and go back to the old school, where the lyrics were as good as the beats, and their was substance over flash.
hip hops best lyricist at his finest.......2005-11-20
There's always an argument over who's the best lyricist in hip-hop. Nas, Jay-Z, Rakim, Eminem, Black Thought, Ice Cube, Biggie and a Wu-Tang member (usually Ghostface) are usually the top contenders. No offense to them, as they're all great rappers, but Big Daddy Kane conquers them all. No one can shift words around like the Big Daddy did with such powerful delivery and an excellent voice (only Ice Cube or Ghostface can match the delivery and Rakim or Kool G. Rap match the lyrics). I've been listening to this album for years and I still can't get all the words to the first verse of "Set It Off" down without messing up.
But the lyrics aren't the only reason to get this album. Marley Marl's production stands the test of time, and the production on "Ain't No Half Steppin" is just brilliant and is one of hip-hop's greatest songs of all time with Kane's mellow flow and clever lyrics. Mister Cee, the DJ, also showcases his skill on the turntables on songs like "Long Live the Kane" with his soul samples and ability to spice up any Marley Marl beat to make it even better.
Put simply, there's a reason this album got 5 mics from the Source. It's a hip-hop classic, and it influenced everything from Jay-Z and Common to Dr. Dre's G Funk era that ruled the early to mid 90s. Pick up this album and "It's a Big Daddy Thing" to hear a master of the microphone rip it from start to finish.

CLASSIC IN ANY CATERGORY OR TIME PERIOD.......2007-06-17
This album is real hip hop. Intelligent, flawless lyrics, killer flows blows anything current out of the water. One of the top MC's and albums of all time.
One of the best Hip Hop albums ever!.......2007-05-12
This record was great for so many reasons.
Rhymes:
Kane was a wordsmith like no other. He could spit rapid fire battle rhymes or he lay it on smooth for the ladies. In fact, Kane could combine the two! "Smooth Operator" finds Kane destroying his competition "in a calm manner" while still loving the ladies.
Beats:
The variety of sounds on this record is delight to the ears. "Young, Gifted, and Black" gives you that '70s Blaxploitation feel. The sampled horns behind Kane's rhymes takes you to another place. It's smooth, but not soft. And who can forget "I Get the Job Done"? Teddy Riley's percussion arrangement is sure to keep the head nodding back and forth.
Style:
This was one of the intangibles Kane brought to the game. In the videos Kane sported three piece suites, and slick warm up outfits. His demeanor and body language were both aggressive and smooth simultaneously. That dichotomy seems to be lost on many rappers today. Kane's bravado never overshadowed his fierce intelligence. In fact, Kane's gift was his ability to take that aggression and bravado and channel it through his incredible ability to articulate and construct with his words.
If you truly love Hip Hop, you must have a copy of this in your collection.
Big Daddy Kane With Emphasis.......2007-04-27
1989 was truly the year of the BDK, with a fitting album like this. Who didn't like "Smooth Operator"? I didn't care for the "Lean On Me Remix"; I prefer the original that appeared in Morgan Freeman's movie "Lean On Me". Everything else was da bomb!!!!!
WONDERFUL SECOND ALBUM.......2007-02-02
to me, kane was at his sharpest on this album. no matter what style he unveiled, the man was simply on point. i just wish that he was a little more consistent with his other albums. i also think that the movie thing messed him up a bit. his first two albums are his best stuff. i highly recommend them.
Big Daddy Kane's reputation rests on his 1st & 2nd albums...................2006-06-25
Once again another 1989 banger. Kane came into his own on his second joint. Relentless fire lyrics carried this album much more than the beats. Fav's are Pimpin ain't Easy ( with Nice & Smooth), Another Victory, Lean on Me, Warm it up Kane and basically the whole album. This is Big Daddy Kane at his finest before fell off due to chasing skirts,Madonna and making sappy songs with Barry White and Spinderella. All is forgiven now, due to Kane's influence on Jay and B.I.G.

Alongside acts such as Public Enemy and X-Clan, the Brand Nubian quartet (DJ Alamo and MCs Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar) helped introduce a whole new generation to Five-Percenter philosophies and conscious pride. Their 1990 debut was filled with the smooth production and syrupy flows that made the Nubian brand of Afrocentricity accessible and funky. Singles "All for One," "Slow Down," and "To the Right" highlight One for All, though some of the album's up-tempo efforts sound a little dated; "Wake Up," "Step to the Rear," and "Drop the Bomb" also shine. Alongside the wit and wisdom, though, the Nubian trio dropped some lyrical gaffes as well. Throughout One For All, there are plenty of unfortunate references to "hittin' skins," "cave-dwellin'" Caucasians, and hardcore homophobia. Despite its weaker moments, One for All is still one of the most impressive and definitive documents from hip-hop's "conscious" era. --Hua Hsu

The gods are krazy.......2007-05-23
Timeless classic by my favorite 5 percent brothers. sadat x, lord jamal, and grand puba's debut blew me away then and still supplies me with my hip hop fix antime I need it. Subject matter that was relevant then and still can apply to today's issues is another reason why this album will always matter in hip hop history. If you don't have this one your collection is suffering.
IF THIS IS NOT IN YOUR HIP HOP COLLECTION, THEN MAN, YOU ARE MISSING OUT.......2007-01-25
ONE FOR ALL............IS ALL FOR ONE............I HIT A BEAT AND SWING A NOTE AS IF MY NAME IS DAVID RUFFIN...............from that point, i can listen to this at a plethora of angles and still not get tired of it. best DEDICATION track EVER!!!!!!! they just don't make 'em like this anymore, and it's a shame. the sinistral one TO THE RIGHT!!!!!!
Grand Puba, Lord Jamar, Alamo and Sadat X's debut classic............ .......2006-12-30
The message may steer some people away, but you cannot deny the genius of their flow. These brothers could rap circles around most dudes.
Top Joints:
Step To the Rear (Puba Shines)
One For All
Concerto in X Minor (Sadat's Tight Solo Spot)
Dance To My Ministry (Jamar's Tight Joint)
Ragtime (Great Flows on here)
Wake Up
Slow Down (Great message for crackheads)

Man its amazing to see these guys and the way you seem them on the TV is the same way you seem in the street, "real." Support Hip-hop as it's laying on the its death bed. One for all is my fav track (video version).
Brand Nubian - One For All.......2006-05-27
Not much to say about this album only for the fact that its a classic album! Real Hip Hop at its finest definately. This is the first album that I have from these guys, and to tell you I was satisfied, they all got the old school sound and its all real! Let me get to the basics of the album.
The production, it all has that old school sound. Some laid back type tracks. Has some upbeat tracks then just normal soundin vibes. But the production is definately good, sucks that rap cant be produ ced like this nowdays or rap would be way better. But the production on this album is straight fire. Let me show you beats I like. "All For One", "Ragtime", "To The Right", "Slow Down", "Who Get Busy Like This Man", "Dedication". Some of there are grimey with a string loop in the back ground. But great beats for sure.
Lyrics, these guys spit some pretty hott lyrics. There isnt much to say and I cant really judge their lyrical abilites just yet since ive only heard THIS album from them, but I was satisfied with their lyrics on this album and they got some hott lyrics definately.
Overall, if your a fan of that TRUE hiphop, that old school sound, since this album dropped in 1990, then you will love this album!!! Pick it up!!

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

SISSAYYYY!.......2007-05-11
I used to dig this group. I had this on cassette and lost it - I refuse to buy it again - meaning, if I lost it, I probably don't need it again, unless someone wants to buy it for me! hint, hint!!!
TO THE EAST MY BROTHER.........AND THEN SOME!!!!!.......2007-01-25
if you do not remember x clan, you do not know hip hop.........i'm sorry. this whole thing should be somewhere in the smithsonian or somewhere important. i'd dig a baement in the alamo. i love it that much!!!! when i heard that professor x had passed at my job, my mouth stayed open the whole shift. i am like one of the reviewers here, without hearing THIS IS PROTECTED BY THE RED, THE BLACK, AND THE GREEN......WITH A KEY......SISSYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYUH!!!!, it just would not be an x clan track.........or BROTHA BROTHA BROTHA HOW YOU MAKE 'EM GET DOWN............sampled so many a time it's not funny!!!! missy elliot's UNDER CONSTRUCTION and what jermaine dupri is doing today..............x clan.............professor x............think about it. get this while you are thinking!!!!
Funky, Funky Wisdom - - R.I.P. PXO & Sugar Shaft [5 Stars].......2006-05-16
There isn't a whole lot that I can add to the other reviews. This album is definitely one of the best albums (rap or otherwise) to come out of the 90's. I could go into specific songs and talk about how funky they were, but if you were around to experience their sound when they dropped in '90 (or have bothered to read the other reviews) then you know how dope they are. Grand Verbalizer, Funkin' Lesson, Shaft's Big Score, Tribal Jam.....I mean, the list just goes on and on.
As far as imperfections, there are none on this album. It may sound a little dated, but in my eyes, that's a good thing. I mean, really, when is the last time you were in a club and heard a funky jam that also tried to uplift who you were? My only beef is that the album is only 11 tracks deep and just under 48 minutes long.
Anyone that knows hip hop acknowledges the X-Clan as one of the dopest acts to come out of the 1990's. It you haven't heard To The East Blackwards, then go pick it up and quit sleeping
As many of you already know, Professor X died from complications from Meningitis this past March [3-17-06]. I wonder if X-Clan will still drop the material recorded during their comeback attempt this year (the Return From Mecca LP). I'd love to hear what they would sound like in 2006. Though Sugar Shaft (who died from complications from AIDS in '95) wasn't as vocal in the group, it's all but impossible to imagine what they'd sound like without Professor X The Overseer. R.I.P. PXO [Aug. 4, 1956 ~ Mar. 17, 2006].
Standout Tracks: Verbs Of Power, Tribal Jam, Raise The Flag, Earth Bound, Heed The Word Of The Brother, Funkin' Lesson, Verbal Milk, Shaft's Big Score (My Favorite), Grand Verbalizer What time Is It?, and In The Ways Of The Scales
Just the x-best!.......2006-02-10

Old School Rap At Its Best!.......2007-03-10
Whodini has to be one of my favorite old school rap groups of all time! They have a distinct style and original background beats that no one else can match. "Five Minutes Of Funk" is one of my all-time favorite rap songs, particularly since the lyrics are recognizable, and free of all that annoying yelling and screaming modern-day rappers like to force on listeners. It's also free from another annoyance of today's rap music: shout-outs... There's nothing more annoying than a rap song full of nothing but shout-outs to a bunch of people that listeners don't care about. This album, aside from "Five Minutes Of Funk", has plenty of other tracks to keep your attention. "One Love" is a smooth-rhythm track with a nice, mellow tempo. It also has some creative lyrics that makes the song resemble somewhat of a rap-ballad. "Friends" is a song that just about every rap fan recognizes and memorizes, and "Freaks Come Out At Night" is a staple of all old school rap fans' collections. Both are heavily recognizable songs that anyone from the '80's that followed rap will recall. You will likely enjoy "I'm A Ho" since it's a comical track with creative style of rhymin' to a rather silly theme. "Escape" was an underrated track, since most fans don't recall that one unless they bought Whodini's album. That song was not a popular radio play, but still a good one to listen to for buyers. "Funky Beat" is one of Whodini's later releases, and a bit different than their more original material. However, it still lends a unique backdrop beat along with catchy lyrics. This compilation ranks as one of my favorites of all time, and if you're into old school rap at all, it will rank up there for you as well.
Classic rap in the mid 1980's...................2007-01-15
Whodini was big in the mid eighties with hits like 5 Minutes of Funk, Friends, One Love, Big Mouth and the Freaks Come Out at Night. This album was undoubtedly one of the top rap albums of 1984-1985. All of Whodini's big hits are on this one album. Nuff respect to Jahlil, Grand Master Dee and Extasy.
Long Overlooked, But Crucial To Hip-Hop History!!.......2006-10-29
Whodini was one of the best of the early hip-hop
trios and they had quite a following and string of hits
as this collection will attest!
I remember seeing them back in summer 1984 with
the then new Run DMC fresh off the success of
"It's Like That", "Hard Times" & "Sucka MC's"!!
Whodini had "Haunted House Of Rock", "Freinds",
"The Freaks Come Out At Night" and the classic
"5 Minutes of Funk" out then and
they really stopped the show!
Later came the other jams like "One Love",
"I'm A Ho!!" and others that left their mark
with early hip-hoppers.
I hope that they will get their just due and be honored
on VH-1's Hip-Hop Honors for 2007.
I always wanted a leather hat just like the one that guy who
was the lead MC use to rock!! (LOL!!)
They were just as crucial as Kurtis Blow, Sugarhill,
Run DMC, LL COOL J and all the others who we think of
now as icons of the game!---Much Love & Respect!!
Funky Fresh Favorite !.......2006-01-23
This review only deals with a bunch of the songs on this as I only have 45s of Whodini's and they are all included. These are Friends, Five Minutes Of Funk, and Freaks Come Out At Night.
At the time of its release, I became a big fan of "If I Ruled The World" by Nas feat. Lauryn Hill, mostly because I felt an electroshock every time I heard that electronic sample, in the background of the verses. Well, that was Whodini's "Friends" and their trademark electronic sound that fits just right into the Hip Hop frame as far as melodies goes, even today.
Whodini managed to appeal to wider audiences than other first generation Hip Hop, girls in particular probably because of their more melodic sound, occasionaly involving singing. Anyway, to set the record straight with the review by Little Rich Kid and anyone else who might have the same misconceptions about Whodini. This is what is properly known as old school hip hop, that is Hip Hop in the early 80s. And yes, hip hop was originally based on rather Disco cuts than funk/soul. Good Times anyone?
The other artists Lil Rich Kid listed as fake rap are Kool Moe D (former Treacherous Three) and Kurtis Blow, namely a pick of the very first artist to put out Hip Hop albums at the time (along with GrandMaster Flash) as opposed to just singles. Without the input from these guys, Hip Hop just would not be as we know it today.
What he lists as Good Rap are all artists from the next generations of hip hop. In other words, he just does not like old school hip hop to start with, so his review falls pretty short of meaning. I would not find it constructive to go criticize a metal album because I don't like metal. This would not help metalheads to decide what to buy and what to avoid.
As for the review goes, Whodini's stuff is pretty tight on production, using loads of electronics and drum machines in a pretty successful way, that will allways fit well in an old school mix or an electro one in my opinion. The rappin is old school but pretty good, keeping a good balance between the music and the lyrics. Nice elctro breaks to be used in mixes or just to dig on your iPod.
I'll just give it four stars as I do not know the rest of the compilation, it is still worht getting for these three tunes.
Flashback.......2005-09-11
The reason i got it is cause I was in Oakland at a flee market and found an og poster board of whodini, utfo and the real roxanne performing at the Paramount in Otown in 1982. I bought the piece and now want that music in my iPod. This is the real OG and ya have to be OG to recognize. Not on the coattails of trend off Ludlow St.
