Bastard

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Former Wire frontman Newman is an extremely influential art punk who's consistently stretched the boundaries of what can be done in rock & roll. So it's extremely disappointing that Bastard not only lack vocals, but is extremely dull. Newman says in his press kit that he was inspired by the post-rock bands on Chicago's Kranky and Thrill Jockey labels--in particular Tortoise. But what he really means is that he was prompted to include some organic instrumental sounds (mostly drums and guitars) in unremarkable ambient house instrumentals such as "Slowfast (Falling Down the Stairs With A Drumkit)." Don't you hate it when your heroes disappoint you? Jim Derogatis

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2007-07-01

I had never heard of this band until yesterday.

I was just looking around the web and happened upon a website that had one of their songs on it "How It Ends". I only got to hear about 4 seconds of the song, but it was enough to make the hair raise on the back of my neck and send electric chills that I haven't had from music in a long long time.

It made me go out and get all of their stuff and so far, I love it all. I haven't heard anything this amazing since The Magnetic Fields.

His voice is abosulutely amazing and soul piercing.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy, sultry.......2007-05-10

I have had this album for about a month, playing on repeat. This is best album I have heard in years. Their music is best described as--sexy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! a must-have! .......2007-04-23

This band denies the idea that a band can be held back by a lesser known genre of music. To begining to end, this album challenges the listener to change his/her view of music for the better....and yeah, "How it ends" is, in my opinion, probaly one of the best songs of 2006! Buy it or be square!

5 out of 5 stars So lovely..........2007-03-18

I bought this CD on a whim, as it was recommended by a reviewer when I purchased the soundtrack to Everything is Illuminated. It's great. If you like your music with a bit of melancholy, this is for you. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonder-Full.......2007-01-11

One source describes DeVotchKa as "a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, and Mariachi music with American punk and folk roots." Personally, I can only describe their music as among the BEST I have ever heard. It is brooding at times, uplifting at others, always thoughtful, narratively lyrical (each song tells a sort of short story), and solidly melodic without ever being mawkish, phony, or fruity. Just good music.

Return's title and various lyrics acknowledge Wu-Tang's self-built mythology, but Ol' Dirty Bastard's solo debut, like the man himself, runs on its own idiosyncratic power. Rapping forcefully and on point--mumbling, singing, allowing weird wordless sounds to escape his throat in an assertion of his right to make random noise--ODB slips from mode to mode like Marvin Gaye juxtaposing the gruff and the smooth in the same song. The production, mostly by the RZA, sets the man down in the middle of funky, shape-shifting tracks to scream for blood, shout out to the Temptations and "you other grooops!" and threaten "any MC in any 52 states." "I love that guy," ODB secret identity Russell Jones declares of his alter ego at the outset; after a listen to this disc, it's likely at least part of you will, too. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Yeah baby he likes its raaaaawwww!.......2007-03-23

ODB is one those people who is the life of the party, the only one with personality out of the group. Even though he is not the best MC out of the Wutang Clan he is not the worst(hello Ugod anybody). Standout Tracks: SHIMMY SHIMMY YA, BROOKLYN ZOO, HIPPA TO DA HOPPA, RAWHIDE, DAMAGE, THE STOMP, SNAKES, PROTECT YA NECKII THE ZOO, CUTTIN HEADZ and HARLEM WORLD. I'll admit that I still laugh my a** off when I hear Drunk Game(Sweet Sugar Pie). Filler: Brooklyn ZooII(Tiger Crane)(Ghostface verse was fire but the rest of the song is...... and Dirty Dancin(sounds like it was poorly mixed). Bottom Line: This Is ODB's best effort and unfortunately the best album he ever made(check every album after this one if you have doubt). Rza and company werent slacking on the production and Ol' Dirty and the guest appearances were exceptional on this album. REST IN PEACE RUSSELL JONES AKA ODB AKA DIRT MCGIRT AKA you know the rest!

5 out of 5 stars I don't even like your profile!.......2007-03-23

Like common perceptions of ODB, I thought he was a clown. After listening to this whole album, I think ODB is a modern day Screamin' Jay Hawkins. When ODB rhymes welfare with.....welfare, not only is it hilarious, but incredibly heady as well, considering the shame associated with that word and the powerful and ironic way he rhymes it twice in a couplet. Forget all the serious hip hop heads. What's genius about ODB is that he's oblivious to pretension. He's pure.

5 out of 5 stars Tell me who's ever made an album like this?!!.......2007-02-03

I remember when this came out when I was a teenager. My friend had it playin in his tape deck, I didn't know what to think. "What the hell is this?" There's no father to his style, total freedom of self expression! Brilliant, I had to have it. Swiped his copy and never gave it back! Played it more than any other tape I ever owned. Played the damn thing till it wouldn't play no more and was forced to find a buddy with a copy on disc to steal off of! Haha..

My personal fav of the Wu catalog, hell it's one of my favorite albums of all time! Nothing sounds like it. One of the most original and misunderstood artists, this album still sounds just as crazy and intense as the day it first came out. My favorite tracks are Don't You Know and Goin Down, "Soooome..wheeere oover the raainboww!" Come on, are you kiddin me? The beats were grimmey and erie, mixing perfect with ODB's drunken attitude and style. The contributions from Wu members help ground the album with their straightforward rhymes while at the same time complimenting Dirt McGirt's unique vocal approach. This album stand in a class all it's own. No-one will ever be able to duplicate what this MC brought to the table, let alone know where to even start!

This album is an example of a artist doin his own thing and goin for it.
If you want to hear the same old thing, another boring, sharp dressin, mediocre MC, spitting the same old monotone raps that we've been hearing for the last countless years than turn on the TV and save your money. "This is something old,,, and dirty....... and duurrtayyy!
Yeah"

Rest in Peace O.D.B.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Wu Tang Solo by a very dope yet very wierd mc...ODB.......2006-09-06

I'm not a huge fan of ODB but I love Wu Tang So I eventually gave this album a try. First let me start off by saying there were only 2 or 3 tracks I was feeling, I donno it was pretty hard to get adjusted too for some reason. The sound was wierd especially just hearing O.D.B without any back most of the time. But Time went on and some day I just finally started getting into this album, so to make it sure unlike most wu albums it may take awhile for some maybe few to get into. I was many people who at once though the rzarecta wasted some very precious beats on O.D.B(Like I was saying b4 i really wasnt diggin most of the album but as time went by i really started to appreciate it and started getting adjusted more to O.D.B crazy yet very profound lyrics). Its not the best wu solo out there but it still deffenitley is a must have. O.D.B rips the mic in some pretty dope songs and RZA backs it up with his usual crazy style of Kun Fu crazy wu tang banger beats.

4 out of 5 stars ODB solo debut is niiiice -- R.I.P........2006-05-01

The 2nd member of the Wu to drop a solo did it with fashioon. Everyone loved the Single Shimmy Shimmy Ya and the odd and crazy drunk style was off the charts. With 16 songs you get a good deal of ODB but guests are heavy, on about half of the songs and all of the Wu is the album other then Inspectah Deck and U-God and some Wu-related cats as well. Production is the classic Wu age sound and mostly handled by the RZA (13 of the 17 songs). With ODB, True Master and 4th Disciple all doing a little as well. Of the 16 songs there is 2 or 3 I skip over, I can only take so much off his drunk rambling some times. A few are almost classic material or classic and the rest are good with maybe 3 that are ok. For real Wu fans and fans of the ODB you have to have this, it's definitely his best solo album.

The raw intensity and category-defying daring of this posthumous release reminds us how great was the loss when Chris Whitley died in November 2005. Reiter In is about as live an album as one can record in the studio and as close as the mercurial Whitley would come to the essence of punk rock. Since his virtuosic guitar remains much on display, the results seem to find a common bond between Jimmy Page and Johnny Thunders. In fact, Whitney thunders like Led Zeppelin in a muscular rendition of Willie Dixon's "Bring It on Home," a trance-inducing cover of the Flaming Lips' "Mountain Side," and the original "I Go Evil." Other covers range from the album-opening stomp of the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" to the throb of the Passions' "I'm in Love with a German Film Star" and Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" Yet the quieter intimacy of the almost wordless "Inn" and two poems, "Cut the Cards" and the German/English "Reiter In"--both of which evoke the specter of mortality--is equally powerful and revelatory. A fitting epitaph, and a transcendent power surge. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars A Sweet Swan Song.......2007-08-05

In 2007, Rounder Records released an album by Chris Whitley & Jeff Lang called "Dislocation Blues." As of now, that is the last known recording by Chris Whitley. But make no mistake about it, "Reiter In" is and will always be the man's last will and testament and what an epitaph!

Whitley assembled a variety of musicians and cut this record live, straight to tape. There are 4 originals and 11 covers and from the opening riffs of "I Wanna Be Your Dog," it is clear that this is a man on a mission.

At the time of this recording, Whitley had learned of the illness that would eventually take his life and it shows. Life, love, hope, anger, pain, redemption, salvation, and death are evident throughout each and every track. This is one of the most poignant and moving cd's I've ever heard. You're on the verge of tears just listening to a brilliant musician come to terms with his own untimely death.

I have been a fan of Chris Whitley for 16 years and have had the pleasure of listening to all of his recordings and have seen him live a handful of times. Moments I will always cherish. But never have I been affected the way I was listening to "Reiter In." I miss you, Chris!

5 out of 5 stars A man at the height of his powers... fantastic!.......2007-05-09

Reiter In continues the big, dirty swamp 'blues and swagger' that were on the album Dislocation Blues (with Jeff Lang). The mood is dark, the voice is a haunted howl and whisper, the guitars growl and wail. Totally mesmerizing and I played it for days on end after I got it.

I bought this after listening online to some of the songs - they confirmed that this was the same sort of stuff as Dislocation Blues, which was the first I'd heard of Chris Whitley (yeah, I was late to the party - the world has certainly been robbed).

Which brings me to the previous reviewer that felt the sound recording wasn't good. I think this is a taste thing, because in my search for more Whitley I listened to some snippets of earlier recordings ('90s) and they sounded too bright and clean in vocal and guitar stylings for my tastes - a bit 'bland country' - and not like the grungy atmospheric sound I love on these two albums. Or maybe my speakers are better. But I'll seek out some more earlier Whitley.

As a side note, this review follows in a karmic way from seeing Jeff Lang do his thing live just last night - and he did make a warm tribute to Chris. Seeing Jeff live (first time) was both exhiliarating and daunting. Exhiliarating because he wields his acoustics with all the flair, aggression and artistry of Hendrix (though as a short white guy who looks like a 'bushranger', he'll never be as famous). And daunting, because I've been learning guitar for 9 months and came to the sad realisation that I will never, ever 'own' the guitar so completely as he does.

Anyway, buy this album and Dislocation Blues. Reiter Out.

1 out of 5 stars one for the obsessives.......2007-01-10

This was a disappointment for me...the recording quality is poor and it was obviously released post-mortem...maybe to milk the legend?? One for the obsessives only..stick to his studio work.

4 out of 5 stars Chris' raw and moving farewell.......2006-12-19

Chris Whitey's posthumous release, Reiter In, finds the criminally underrated songwriter/guitarist still challenging himself even while he was fighting to survive. Rather than go in the atmospheric direction of Soft Dangerous Shores, this is live in the studio release with a "just plug in and let it rip" feel to it. Chris was near his demise at this point and the performances here echo the wide range of emotions one goes through before their passing. The opening tracks are a furious take on the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and a joyous version of the blues classic "Bring It On Home" that features great call and response between Chris' guitar and Tim Beattie's harmonica playing. After these tracks, the album is a very moody affair as the tracks "Inn" and "Cut the Cards" are very melancholy while the closing instrumental "Come Home" and the version of the Flaming Lips' "Mountain Side" are very upbeat and give a sense of hope. The version of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" is actually a little bit funky until Chris' passionate soloing kicks in. While all of these tracks are very good, it's Chris' original songs, all of which have a very hypnotic feel, that work best. "All Beauty Taken..." is a rollicking blues with a loose vibe while the title track is a spoken word piece told over a repetitive yet beautiful guitar line. Finally, the plodding "I Go Evil" is absolutely killer, possessing a wicked groove never heard in his previous work. All told, while this isn't one of Chris' best albums (his albums of all original material give a better description of his vast talents), Reiter In is another strong album from a true artist that played and wrote what he felt rather than give in to commercial gain.

4 out of 5 stars One Last Gasp of Genius!.......2006-09-12

My oldest daughter, now 23, became mesmerized by Chris Whitley's "Living With The Law" album when she was pre-school age. "Stones Under My Bed" is still her fave.

I some ways, she has tried to live up to Chris Whitley's outlaw sensibilities. (One too many tatoos and a terrible problem with authority figures...)

We saw Chris only once at a tragically-gone-wrong club show in Chicago at the Metro right after the 2-CD retrospective disc came out.

Ticket sales were down, so the club decided to "add" a drummer and bass player of local fame to "back up" Chris.

It was a disaster.

The drummer could only play one off-beat skiddle riff and it didn't fit any of Chris's tunes. The bass player was having a bad case of stage fright.

Whitley soldiered on.... and (sadly but heroically) never dismissed his incompetent sidemen.

As usual he wailed, distorted, anguished over the failed spectacle of himself trying to redeem just a moment or two.

It was the best/worst illustration of pathos I've ever seen.

Chris has always reminded me of Miles when he was a bad junky.

Either one.

Too much suffering for too few rewards....

The CD is a must-have treasure.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-life—not surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!

Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu

While the previous reviwer was correct that Cells the trailer song is not on the soundtrack, Servant did indeed create an instrumental version and you can obtain it at this link follow the instructions it is at the Servant website so its legal and its for a limited time only!

4 out of 5 stars An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16

FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!

So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.

Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

How did ODB get to start hanging with the Wu-Tang Clan, anyway? The man goes so much his own way that not only does Nigga Please sound like no other solo project from a Clan member, it doesn't really resemble any record except itself. Little things like mental illness, drug addiction, or criminal behavior are hardly deterrents if ya wanna be a star. In fact, if utilized properly, such defects can become major career boosters. Take Ol' Dirty Bastard. A perennial fixture of perp walks in Brooklyn, ODB hasn't let minor scuffles with the boys in blue impede his crossover dreams. Nor has he let a seemingly silly thing like being totally out of his ever-loving mind slow his musical mustang down. No, boyee. Our man Bastard knows that everyone loves to watch a train wreck, and a train wreck is what he will give the fans. Luckily for all concerned, ODB's sophomore solo CD is more than just an exercise in poor mental health and bad chemical combos: it's funny as all get out and one of the most outrageous rap records... ever. Sure, ODB's drugged-out, insane-in-the-membrane rantings and delusional ravings can wear a bit thin, but not before tracks like the string laden "I Can't Wait"--in which Dirty offers shout outs to the Eskimos, the Marines, and himself--and a careening cover of Rick James's "Cold Blooded" have you holding your sides. Titles like "I Want P***y" and "You Don't Wanna F**k With Me" pretty much sum up the vibe. But if you check your PC concerns at the door (Dirty insults and offends everyone with equal precision) and allow the beats of such masters as the Neptunes, Irv Gotti, and Wu-mate RZA waft over you, you will find yourself loving Nigga Please. In an age of cleaned-up thugs and radio-ready party anthems, ODB has made a record that should give parents nightmares and hip-hop fans sweet dreams. --Amy Linden

This is the worst rap alblum I have ever owned. I would be ashamed for anyone to hear me bump any ODB in my ride. Except Brookyln Zoo and Got Your Money. And yo, when wu members perform Brookyn Zoo at concerts it sounds WAY HOTTER then ODB did. I'm not glad hes dead but I'm glad hes not dropin anymore under "WU"

It's so funny. Black people hate being called anything like the title by white people, yet they call each other the very same. This is nothing but racist noise. If you are black, stay away because it puts your proud heritage into the trash. If you are white, stay away because of the hate in the air.

Album Description

The Bastard Fairies could be termed an oxymoron. If this is the case, then their music is most definitely oxymoronic. Naughty but nice, sweet and sour, beautifully macabre, wonderfully morose. Like a baby with a razor blade, it'll hug you then cut you with no warning. Lead singer, Yellow Thunder Woman, fiercely intelligent and clearly disturbed is that baby, assigned to take you through the many trials of life and understand that, no matter who you are, or where you've come from, we are all screwed up and twisted and each of us is a bastard fairy in our own little way. The band has become a Myspace and YouTube favorite with their song "We're All Going To Hell".

I first downloaded the free album they had on their site and it blew me away. I haven't bought a CD in 10 years but I just had to buy this when it came out. 4 out of 5 stars The Perfect Swan Song.......2006-02-20

I couldn't stop playing Track 2, "Dirty Dirty"! and Track 11 "P*ssy Keep Calling" This is one of the only true pure Hiphop albums of 2004 along with De La Souls "The Grind Date". Unfortunatley Russell Jones is no longer in human existense and that's truly sad. I really miss his crazy eccentricity. He was to the Wu-Tang Clan what Flava Flav is to Public Enemy.

3 out of 5 stars "Osirus Mixtape" Review.......2005-09-11

Few were sadder than myself to hear the news of ODB's passing. In a world full of manufactured rappers who try to generate record sales by pretending to be "larger-than-life", Dirty was a breath of fresh air. He was a wild, over-the-top "character" whose entoxicated flow made him the Wu-Tang Clan's most intruiging emcee and one of hip-hop's most bizarrely-entertaining attractions. "The Osirus Mixtape" is one of many tributes that is sure to come on the heals of its star's untimely death.

While a lot better than his previous "Trials & Tribulations" album (an awful mess of an LP thrown together by D3 while he was imprisoned), "Osirus" is far from being on the level of the first two Ol' Dirty Bastard albums. The opening track and first single, "Pop Shots" is the highlight of this release and "Dirty Dirty" has some of that classic ODB style (though the remix called "Fire" is even better) but a lot of the songs on here seem like studio scraps. Had Dirt been alive to supervise the release of this record, you can't help but think it might have come off a lot better. It's not awful but I was expecting a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars ODB aka DIRT MCGIRT, R.I.P........2005-03-17

Like to say I never been much of a fan to O.D.B. aka "Dirt McGirt", "Big Baby Jesus", "Osirus", etc. since I heard him instantly on some videos, music of course and especially on his interview he did on VH1 when he got outta jail in May 2003. Man there's so much I had to learn from this man. Anyway if u never heard of him or never been a fan, you should check him out. Nor if u been a fan to him, here's one for you. Like to say Russell Jones had so much in his mind he had to face like how he was in involved in drugs and alcohol, how he got involved in the right place at the right time, being locked up for stuff he wasn't supposed to do, you know all those things that were inside of him.

Like to say I would love to pick up his posthumous mixtape ASAP especially his last album dropping out soon in the spring or summer. God bless you my brotha may your legacy live on between us. You'll always be a part of who I am and where I'm at today.
God luvs you and you never forsaken or never forgotten.

R.I.P. to Russell Jones aka "Ol' Dirty B*****d (1968-2004).

3 out of 5 stars Poppin' Shots In the Afterlife!.......2005-03-04

I wanted to like this album so badly. I wanted to love this album; to know that ODB's works in progress were masterpieces. Unfortunately, I just couldn't. As an avid fan of Wu-Tang Clan, fans of true blue Wu will most likely agree with me. Of course, this is just my opinion, so feel free to disagree. The following is a fact though - Osirus sounds mainstream. The production is atrocious. The majority of the beats are overwhelming, loud, club/Lil' Jon style and take away from ODB's sound. Also, with ODB laying off the drugs during rhyming, his style has become more tame. ODB flows now, which is hard to get used too. There are some great songs on this one though. 'Pop Shots','Dirty, Dirty' and 'Fire' are awesome tracks. 'Stand Up' w/ Cappadonna (who I am a big fan of) is a personal fav, just because Cap and ODB sound great together. The bottom line: If you love 'dope beats' snatch Osirus. If you love classic RZA/True Master/4th Disciple production Wu-shxt, buy it just to remember ODB and put the cover art on your wall.

Since his death, Frank Zappa has enjoyed several translations of his extremely original and quirky material onto discs performed by jazz ensembles and major European orchestras with such eminent conductors as Pierre Boulez. Not too shabby. This disc by the Finnish Ensemble Ambrosius takes some of Zappa's more tuneful pieces and reworks them for Baroque instruments. This is actually a brilliant maneuver, since much of Zappa's writing translates well for such instruments as oboe, harpsichord, and mandolin (or lute). Highlights here include the catchy theme from Uncle Meat, the short but goofy "Igor's Boogie," and "Idiot Bastard Son," sung with the solemnity of a monk's chant. The performances are above average, but there is some blurring of textures and some lack of clarity in the recorded sound. Overall, though, it's a worthy effort that advances the cause of Zappa's music. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy it!.......2005-06-30

This is one of my favorite non FZ produced cds of FZ music. Heck it may even be my favorite. This is FZ music stripped of all artifice except melody / harmony (i'm aware of the over-simpflication, but roll with me here). FZ dinner music this is. I play it for people who "normally don't like FZ " and they like it. Gorgeous melodies. Performed and arranged lovingly. When you want to put the pedal to the metal: pull out the FZ produced canon. When you want to bliss out on his melodic sense and ability to craft the finest of tunes and variations on a theme: this is the place.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Baroque Ensemble Whipping It Out.......2005-02-17

Firstly I need to address the validity of this album as many have questioned its validity as a Zappa tribute - and be clear that I believe it's an amazing tribute.

Frank Zappa was the greatest composer of the 20th century in terms of the stunning spectrum of elements he was able to incorporate in his works without being consumed by them. He wasn't just a rock and roll guitarist a la Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy. He had fun doing that but he was so much more than that. As an improviser, Frank Zappa was unique but then again so is anyone who's good at it, and many of his guitar solos still thrill me today. That part of Frank Zappa will never be seen again but there is so much more to the man that can still be brought to life - in his own words "My main interest is composition - getting an idea and manifesting it in a way that people can listen to". He was a person who listened to Edgar Varese for entertainment as a teenager. "I didn't write rock and roll until I was in my twenties, but I started writing other kinds of music. I couldn't play it, I could only write it. I liked the way music looked on paper. It was fascinating to me that you could see the notes and somebody who knew what they were doing would look at them and music would come out. I thought it was a miracle". How many rock musicians does that apply to?

Throughout his musical career he produced music in many different styles and many different formats and those two points are distinct - for example he would have rock and roll type themes played in a symphonic format or neo classical type themes played in a jazz/rock big band format. The formats he chose were not always purely dictated by his own whim, he lived in the real world and worked with the resources available to him at any given time and projects some times collapsed as with his original aims with the combination of the early Mothers and 14 members of the BBC orchestra on 28th October 1968 in the Royal Festival Hall, London. The album that was originally intended never materialised.

When Zappa was approached by the Ensemble Modern he was initially sceptical about what could be achieved but he warmed to the idea and The Yellow Shark album is a testament to what was possible. I believe if he was still alive and was approached by Ensemble Ambrosius he wouldn't turn them away and Olli Vertaperko might have been saved one or two years of his life. None the less, Olli's work on transcribing Zappa's compositions is nothing short of incredible. Those close to Frank have commented about how long it took him to complete some of his pieces and his attention to detail and I think that Olli's arrangements have captured that element of Frank's work. Zappa may or may not have suggested a different choice of pieces had he collaborated with Ensemble Ambrosius but he surely would not have knocked back their choice of instruments. One of them plays the harpsichord - so naturally it appears a great deal in the arrangements.

As I've said elsewhere, we need brave new productions of Zappa's music. The Zappa Album by Ensemble Ambrosius is brave, new, unique and brilliant and just as there is no Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy on Yellow Shark there isn't one here either and so what? We should leave it to rock bands perhaps to attempt to capture that aspect of Zappa's work, note that there are no members of the BBC orchestra, or any other classical ensemble for that matter on the Bong Fury version of Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy. Let's not forget that a significant motivation for Zappa's rock music participation was to make a living, it wasn't his prime directive. In his own words when asked during the last year of his life if he missed the rock and roll life - "No". And his attitude to the guitar at that time - "Every once in a while, I feel like playing the guitar, but I stop and think what I'd have to go through in order to do it. The urge goes away". He was a composer to the end and was working on the completion of Civilisation Phase lll, which by the way, also has no Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy.

My favourite piece on The Zappa Album is RDNZL, and I mean the arrangement and performance on this album. All the other tracks are just as amazing in my opinion. It's made pretty clear that this album is performed on baroque instruments so don't be surprised if you buy it and find its performed on baroque instruments. Many baroque instruments aren't very loud and to amplify them would compromise their baroque character. Hence the production is often very subtle and might take some time to grow on you, it only took me two listens to figure it out. Play it really loud at least once. I can't see how anyone who appreciates the entire spectrum of Zappa could not at least respect this album. It is an honourable tribute to him and I'm sure he would have appreciated it. If I could have got my copy for 99 cents it would be one of the best deals I've ever had.

5 out of 5 stars Love it or hate it - choose only one.......2004-08-10

I have been listening to Frank Zappa on LPs, CDs and at concerts since FREAK OUT! was released in 1966. I own a copy of most of his material including two obscure interview CDs.

Prior to buying ENSEMBLE AMBROSIUS, I noticed a wide diversity of opinion among the Amazon reviewers. In fact, based on these reviews, it appears that a person is either going to love or hate ENSEMBLE AMBROSIUS. There seems be no middle ground of appreciation for this work. Because of the negative reviews, I purchased it with a great deal of hesitation.

The question becomes, why do so many people hate it? and conversely, how can so many others love it? I've been reading and rereading the other reviews and thinking about their comments for several days and have come to one conclusion. Those who liked it, were expecting something unusual and their expectations were fulfilled. Those who hated ENSEMBLE AMBROSIUS, I believe were expecting to find Zappa's soul or imprint on this CD. Zappa is not on this CD. Ensemble Ambrosius didn't miss notes, didn't hit the wrong pitch, they didn't get "it" wrong. It is not a rotten tribute. It is their interpretation of Zappa and, most importantly, you may not like it.

In the end, you're either going to love ENSEMBLE AMBROSIUS or hate it. There will be no middle ground. The problem: Amazon, as with so many other CDs, does NOT offer (at the time of this writing) its potential customers an opportunity to listen to sound bites prior to purchase. The negative reviews nearly stopped me from buying this CD. I suspect that others who would like this CD will not buy it because of the reviews, but, in fact, would enjoy owning it if they had an opportunity to listening to bites of the CD on Amazon's web page.

5 out of 5 stars Wondrous And Exotic.......2003-11-17

This is an excellent album.

When I first heard it, I had two criticisms. The fast lick near the end of "The Black Page #2" seemed sloppy to me. But it's just phrased differently.

And the vocalist on "Idiot Bastard Son" sounds a little strange on some low notes, but I've gotten used to it. The treatment of the tune is beautiful.

The great music on this album makes up for any minor weaknesses.

Highlights include : "RDNZL", "Inca Roads",
"Uncles Meat", "Alien Orifice", "Echidna's Arf",
"Night School", "G-Spot Tornado" and "Igor's Boogie".

The harpsichord doing the incredibly fast melody that Ruth Underwood used to play toward the end of "Inca Roads" is something to hear.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Zappa Fans.......2003-06-25

Do not look for Carolina's Hardcore Esctacy on this CD (lalalalalaa la). I don't think its that FZ's music doesn't mix with baroque instruments, I think these musicians have gotten it all wrong. They try (and fail) to 'be creative' with the rhythmn, hit a few totally errant notes (which can sometimes be excused), and show a lame ability to rework Frank'z music and get it right. If there was a 99 cent bin in my town, it would be there. Since there's not, I think Mom will cotten to this "Frank Zappa lite" album - slow, simple and inoffensive - it that a rotten tribute or what?!

Album Description

Mile Markers is just what the name says: a set of signs posted to guide the way home. . . or maybe point out the direction that has home in the rear view mirror.

Set in the West, it rambles and wanders and aims the steering wheel out at the endless horizon. A halfways unfolded road map, it passes through Austin and Tucson and San Ysidro and Los Angeles, through the badlands of both South Dakota and New Mexico, from Oklahoma and the windy Panhandle country around Abilene all the way to Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley.

But Mile Markers is a spiritual voyage as much as a mere travelogue, a set of tales that turns into a single song of journeying forth.

It's like a Western, in a way. It's "The Searchers," or "Ride the High Country," or" High Plains Drifter." Or even"Two-Lane Blacktop" or "The Getaway," because it's set in a contemporary West divided by white lines and asphalt, and settled by truckstops and parking lots. It's a landscape of big skies and long roads and endless Mile Markers flying by at the edge of your vision. And like every true Western ever, contemporary or not, it's a story of drifting and settling, of setting down roots and then having them torn up again, of learning that you don't dare settle down when you're just going to be forced to hit the road again.

For Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons, the last ten years has been a blur of miles and markers. BSOJC has played more shows most years than most bands do in their entire careers, and they've done it the hard way, piling their own gear into their own van, and then heading off into a dark night that's just a couple of hours away from day. A lot of indie bands have done a lot of this, but not many have made the long haul across an entire decade. And amidst that grueling schedule, Stewart has managed to keep writing, delivering two previous records, Walk Alone and Distance Between, that built a hardcore fanbase for the band and yet achieved a critical recognition that most singer-songwriters would slit their left wrist to gain. It was an enviable position, as long as you didn't have to do all the work that went with it.

Listening to the Bastard Sons' music makes you want to grab a ice-cold longneck and Belly up to the nearest bar. Mile Markers is some of the band's best stuff and in my opinion "Road to Bakersfield" may be one of their best ever which is saying alot. If you're tired of the cookie-cutter type music played on "country" stations, give The Bastards a listen! I'll see ya at the bar.

"The Honky-tonks have all gone away but Buck and Merle are here to stay, on the Road to Bakersfield".

"Mature tales of life on the road and lost love as seen by Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash through the windshield of a van carrying them through thousands of miles of desert highways abound on the alt-country outfit's third and finest album, "Mile Markers." The album's lead track, "Austin Nights," sets the pace for much of "Mile Markers" with a mesmerizing groove, touches of sweeping Spanish and steel guitars, an unforgettable melody and deft lyrics of wanderlust delivered by Stuart's trademark warm timbre. "King of the World" is a clever observation of the trials of maintaining a relationship while living on the road and "California Sky" is a touching tribute to the band's home state. These songs, and others, are as cool and arid as a moonlight drive through the desert and they resonate with hope as they travel through the great unknown."

"Unwinding like a country road movie, "Mile Markers" offers twangy slices of Southwestern life. San Diego's favorite Bastard Sons take "The Road to Bakersfield" after spending an "Austin Night" with the character-conscious Texas singer-songwriters (Townes the drifter would've been proud). The Telecaster and steel-guitar sound is potent, but it's Mark Stuart's lived-in vocals that stand out, notably on the closing-time ballad "Are You Lonely Tonight?""

5 out of 5 stars I SMELL GASOLINE!!!.......2005-09-23

So are you tired, like me, of the overly produced, slick as a linoleum slate of endless pseudo country music dribble? Do you have a hard time telling one band or singer from another. Drones of clones... it just goes on and on. I threw out my radio a long time ago, my friends. They won't play these Bastards! And that is the shame of the state of the country music business today. Luckily, the "ALT - COUNTRY" music scene is saving the day, and these guys are at the top of my list for grit, power, emotion and steam. They are the musical equivalent of an 18 wheeled highway locomotive, the kind that leaves your windshield smoke stained with gasoline fumes as you follow them down that lost desert highway. You've got Johnny Cash playing at full volume. You could pass on by, but no, you're hooked on the diesel fumes, so you ride in their wake, cause they know where they're going and you want to get there too.
I love these guys. I've been following them since the late 90s, almost from the start, hitting every show they've done here in Phoenix. After the shows, I would talk to Mark Stuart and the band, listening to all their war stories about the road, the honky tonks, and the near collisions with both drivers and fame. Like the time they recorded in Johnny Cash's famed cabin, and the feeling he left behind there. They have his blessings and they'll need it, because you ain't gonna find a country DJ with the balls to say "Bastard Sons" on the air.
I truly didn't think they could top the eerie, mystical sounds of their last album, Distance Between (a masterpiece in sonic layers of emotion), but they did it here, with Mile Markers. All the tales I heard them tell of their woes on the road are celebrated in this masterful song cycle of true Americana. It's Route 66 in your ears! You can just smell the burning rubber and gasoline. Each song is like a much needed rest stop along the endless freeway, when you step out onto the pavement of a brightly lit truckstop and feel the breeze of our great nation blowing through your hair. My favorite is UNDER YOUR SPELL. You know what I'm talking about guys, that sultry waitress at the Diner, where you can't stand the food, but you keep coming back for another whiff of her seductive perfume.
KING OF THE WORLD and RADIO GIRL are gems that we should be hearing on the radio, politically incorrect band name or not. I want to hear this stuff blairing out somebody's car radio for a change, instead of that damned rap crap! YEAH!!! I want to hear it playing on the Juke Boxes clean across this here country. This is music that defines our country's heritage!
Mark Stuart is a prolific songwriter, with nearly as many unreleased songs in the vault as Neil Young himself. As a matter of fact him and old Neil are the only two guys left who can really write a good song any more.
So what's fifteen bucks for a trip down route 66, at today's gas prices, it's a bargain!!
Now go to your windows, stick your heads out and shout
"I SMELL GASOLINE!!!!!!!"
