A lot of artists evoke the spirit of Tibet, but Nawang Khechog is actually a former Tibetan monk, who took off the robes and took up the flute to travel the world 20 years ago. His albums are usually slotted in the New Age and meditation genres, and certainly his packaging and imagery inspire that. Unfortunately, it overshadows a music that is perhaps deeper, or at least more artistically profound, than that. Tibetan Meditation Music scans less like a background for contemplation and more like a tone poem to the spirit. The opening track seems like an Asian refraction of "Amazing Grace," with Tsering Khechog singing over Nawang Khechog's flute. Khechog's music draws on folk and spiritual traditions but takes them further afield. Think Arvo Pärt on the Tibetan plateau with strings droning a minor-key refrain while Tibetan bells and chimes sound in the background and Khechog chants. I do wish Khechog had brought along just a touch of the drama and shifting moods heard on some of his earlier discs, like the Kitaro-produced Karuna. Tibetan Meditation Music is unvarying in its somber tone. Khechog's chants, which are intimately spoken, whispered more than sung, don't always work on a musical level. But his performances on wood flute are deep explorations into tone and melody. --John Diliberto

Solemn music for prayer and chant.......2007-06-21
Tibetan flautist Nawang Khechog marks 20 years as a professional musician with his new release, Tibetan Mediation Music, a collection of 11 original compositions based on traditional meditative themes. The title might suggest otherwise, but except for sounds used to mark passages in services - such as gongs, bells, and trumpets - music is not a part of Buddhist mediation. It is employed here as the aural background to some of the more commonly used chants and prayers in the Tibetan tradition.
Nawang Khechog knows a bit about those, having in his youth been an ordained monk for 11 years. Among the pieces for which he has chosen to compose are chants to the Buddha, Manju Shri (the god of wisdom), Avalokiteshrava (the god of compassion), and Tara (a female goddess of compassion). There are also two songs based on classic Tibetan poetry, as well as a piece commissioned for the opening ceremony of a 2006 address from ten Nobel Peace Laureates.
Given its purpose, it's hardly surprising to find the music for this project is solemn and staid, built around Nawang's exceptional flute playing and his subdued, often whispered, chanting of the ancient invocations. Except for the marimba on The Great Prince of Peace, the music is played without rhythmic accompaniment and is adorned with bells, gongs and occasional sound effects, such as rolling thunder in The Perfection of Wisdom, or cowbells in Walking Into the Himalayas. These tonal explorations are enriched by the sound of violin, cello, and oud.
This is a lovely album of quiet music suitable for prayer, relaxation, yoga, or massage. It is can also be used to create a relaxing ambience for your work space.

Album Description
The sound of the Tibetan singing bowl is known for its healing properties and its ability to induce states of deep meditative absorption.
This cd features two recordings. In track one, a single bowl is struck softly and regularly , providing a slow and steady rhythm for deep meditation. In track two one bowl steadily hums as it is played while two other bowls ring out intermittently.

Helps me to clear my mind and obtain a wonderful meditative state more quickly and deeply. Highly recommend. Love it.
Excellent CD! Incredibly well done!.......2007-04-09
My teacher started using these CDs in our classroom while we did some thinking and meditation exercises and I couldn't believe how relaxed I felt surrounded by 30 people. The vibes in the room were amazing and I immediately asked her, after class, what the CD was and where she had gotten it.
She showed me it was the Tamboura CD and said they were all available on Amazon. Now I have the Chanting Om, Tamboura, and Tibetan Singing Bowl. Each are wonderful and I highly recommend them!
This CD inparticular has a perfect rhythm to it, which is wonderful for meditation.

"The 'Deep Meditation' CDs are wonderful. I played the Tibetan singing bowls in my yoga class during meditation and my students loved it."
-- Alicia Johnson, Yogi Times Business.
"New Age is one of the most challenged genres to produce music that stands out, moves and inspires. However, "Music for Deep Meditation" taps into the most simple, most basic energies of the life force and attempts nothing more than to help its listeners ground and center in the heart." CD Baby
"A must have for Meditators. The finely crafted recordings bring to life the sacredness and power of soothing primodial sounds"
Stress Free Living Magazine
"I love the CDs! I've been playing them alot at the beginning of class to get people settled in, especially the OM one. At the end of class I use them for meditation and final relaxation. All of my students love them."

"...one of the best meditation CD's out there." YogaLife Magazine
"I love your "Chanting Om" CD so much I'm going to feature it on the FRONT PAGE of CD Baby for a few days.
We're REALLY picky about what goes on the front page. We get about 100 new albums a DAY coming in here now, (about 100,000 total), and yours is one of the best I've ever heard."

Nothing can prepare the uninitiated for the shocking sound of Tibetan throat singing, and these two liturgical pieces, each clocking in at near 25 minutes, are among the best, and most chilling, examples. The Gyuto Monks, in exile in India since the annexation of their native Tibet, have developed a tradition of singing that involves producing the lowest possible notes in the vocal range while simultaneously singing high overtones. The resulting sound suggests a symphony of inspired bullfrogs whose passion is Buddha, not Budweiser, croaking endlessly while rotating a wet foot around the perimeter of a giant wineglass. Which is a pretty mundane metaphor for music that produces such a powerful sense of dread and spiritual awe. Track 2 also includes clattering drums, some made of human crania. Spice Girls it ain't.... --James Rotondi

I've been looking for a Gyuto Monks CD for some time. This really hits the spot.
IF YOU MEDITATE.......2006-03-16
IF YOU MEDITATE OR EVEN LIKE CALM AND RELAXING SOUNDS YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD. I USUALLY PUT IT ON FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN I ARISE TO MEDITATE AND THEN TO REVIEW MY DAY. THIS CD IS BOUND TO RELAX AND SOOTHE THE RESTLESS SPIRIT. IN THE EVENING BEFORE RETIRING I AGAIN LISTEN TO THESE ENCHANTING SOUNDS TO PREPARE FOR A DEEP SLEEP. THE VOICES OF THESE MONKS ARE INCREDIBLY COMPLEX, CAPTURES ONES COMPLETE ATTENTION AND IS TOTALLY ENJOYABLE.
Not available per song on iTunes.......2006-02-22
I have much enjoyed this and the "Freedom Chants from the Roof of the World" recordings of the Gyuto Monks (this one being my favorite). A correction: this music is sold as an album on iTunes for $9.99. The songs aren't available separately, and you are only getting the bitrate and format provided by iTunes. If that meets your needs, then you might try it out. I for one buy the CDs and rip them myself.

Album Description
While other genre labels like Narada and Windham Hill diversified from their new age roots, Real Music has been consistent over the years in providing nothing but the best music for relaxation, meditation and spiritual enhancement. Their most notable recordings come from an Eastern Buddhist mindset, with multi-instrumentalist Karunesh leading the pack on the strength of previous discs Zen Breakfast and Nirvana Café. His basic approach to contemplative music involves a blend of exotic textures (bells, chimes, Tibetan bowls, sitar and Chinese instruments) with easy grooves and rich walls of ambience. The new collection's trance inducing instrumentation and sensuous rhythms begins with a few minutes of pure ambience and sitar, before slowly introducing a gentle percussive line ("For the Joy of It All"); Avinash's graceful Indian violin carries a mournful beauty that is also part of the similarly hypnotic, easy grooving "Monsoon's Dance." Bikram's Bansuri flute floats through beautifully in key locations, such as the introduction of "Mount Kailash." While the uninitiated might feel that there's a certain repetitive nature to the tracks (which usually begin with sparse instrumentation before the electricity is turned on), the intention is more to invoke a sense of inner peace than to be truly innovative. The title of the richly textured "Zensual" sums up the mystical intent of the thought provoking exercise.
~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

The pleasure in the feeling of non-existence.......2006-05-28
I heard the song "Monsoon Dance" on sky.fm. I previewed other songs and then bought almost all songs. Others are fine too, just listened once.
It's been 4 days since I bought them. I am not listening to any other song than Monsoon Dance for almost 4 days, day and night.. I am usually obsessed with these kind of mystic songs, listening to one song at a time for days a stretch, even when I sleep.
Thats the effect of the song Monsoon Dance. Truly, the mystic feeling of non-existence is an amazing pleasure. I feel one with the entire universe when I listen to this song.
I wonder what the composer might have gone through to come up with such an amazing piece of music. The Indian violin's effect is rather deep.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-03-10
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I have every heard. I bring it everywhere when I need to relax. The sound of the instruments from India are just breathtaking.
This is great!.......2006-01-12
....if you like really strange, annoying German people who try to go "native." This is nothing but commodified exoticism; music for spiritual enhancement my arse....
Masterful & mystical "new age music" from KARUNESH .......2005-09-23
I discovered the music of this German-born composer/multi-instrumentalist by accident. I was browsing in the new age music section at a certain mega-bookstore, looking for the latest CD from Kitaro (one of my favorite artists.) Well, I didn't find the Kitaro disc that day, but another CD soon caught my eye, one by an artist I'd never heard of - "Call of the Mystic" by Karunesh. Curious about the cover-art and song titles, I put the CD on the store's headphone listening station. I was soon immersed in the music, and intrigued by its exotic sounds. Of course, these were only brief sound clips from the album, so as each snatch of music soon cut off, I was left wanting to hear more. I then came home, found the CD on Amazon, and ordered it (sorry to the bookstore, but your prices were just too high! : ) Anyway, to make a long story short, in the several months since then, I have become a major fan of Karunesh (pronounced "Care-un-ish", which is, I learned, also the sanscrit word for "compassion".) I have now also collected several titles from his extensive back catalog, and while all of his albums have their own strengths, I believe that "Call of the Mystic" still rates as one of his finest overall releases. With it's mystical/mysterious feel, warm synth textures, and heavy use of exotic instruments, this CD literally makes me feel better when I listen to it. I know that the term "healing music" is probably overused in this genre, but in this case the term really fits. It's one of those rare albums that somehow pulls the listener into its World, and transports them to a better state-of-mind for it's duration. (Kitaro is perhaps the only other new age artist who's work has this effect on me.) Like most of Karunesh's works, this album is fully instrumental (So those of you who do not like vocals/lyrics with your new age music will be particularly pleased!), with all of the tracks running in the 5 to 7 minute range (a good length for this type of music.) Now, as people usually like points of comparsion for reviews such as this, I would say that Karunesh falls into the same general "new age/instrumental/electronic" genre as Kitaro, Vangelis, or Patrick O'Hearn (although his music's rarely as gloomy as O'Hearn's can be.) However, comparisons can tend to be a tad misleading, and at the end of the day Karunesh is a unique artist who's music has a personality of its own...Here is a quick rundown of all the tracks: the album opens with "The Joy of It All", an Eastern-flavored track which benefits from a hypnotic percussion groove and the sitar work of special guest Govi (a respected new age artist in his own right.) "Hearing You Now" features piano/flute lines that rotate back and forth, and an ear-catching mix of both electronic & acoustic drumming. "Monsoon's Dance" gives us one of Karunesh's most memorable melodies, played with a gorgeous blend of piano, Indian violin, and synth/percussion backing. "Mount Kailash" has a deeply-spiritual feel, and is highlighted by another guest spot from Govi (this time playing what sounds like an acoustic guitar run through a digital delay effect...quite a beguiling sound, actually!) "Sunrise at the Ganges" is basically a sitar/flute duet set over a backdrop of synth chords and Indian-style drumming. "Zensual" takes on a darker, electronic tone, with some mysterious "reed"-like synth soloing, layers of keyboard ambience, and a sensual rhythmic groove. "And the Grass Grows by Itself" adds some contrast to the pevious track, based mainly around acoustic sounds and a fun, hopeful melody. This track also features the hum of a Tibetan singing bowl (an unusal sound that I have come to like.) Lastly, "Ancient Voices", the only track with no noticable percussion line, is made up almost entirely of sitar and woodwind sounds, and serves to end the album on a peaceful, contemplative note. All in all, this is an album (and artist) that should not be missed if you are a fan of new age music. I will have to agree with what another reviewer said about Amazon's soundclips, though. The brief clips here are all of the opening moments of these songs, before the main themes really kick in - so the CD really does need to be heard in its full context to be truly appreciated. Also, speaking of other reviews, I think it is quite remarkable that of the six customer reviews that have been posted of this CD thus far, EVERY single one has given it a perfect 5 stars!...Amen!
Call of the Mystic~Karunesh.......2005-07-10
Even though this is my first experience with Karunesh, this album was exactly what I expected,...and I enjoyed the different selection of instruments used to evoke a light, whimsical, and meditative feeling of calm. Recommended for light meditation, yoga practice, or massage therapy.

Chants.......2007-07-29
Love it when I'm going to sleep or when I'm stressed. Wonderful deep, deep, very deep voice.
Wonderful, but only if you're into 'deep voice' Tibetan Chants.......2007-01-13
If you're really into deep voice chants, this is the CD for you. If not, then skip this one.
Deep voice chants are slow and abnormally low/deep voice. It's hard to describe. Some people think that these chants may have 'harmonic healing qualities.' I don't know, but if you like Tibetan Buddhist mantra chanting, deep voice is a wonderful aspect of the sadhana. This CD is a wonderful introduction to deep voice.
I love this CD. Lama Tashi's voice is deep and quite otherworldly, but
I can hear and understand the words. Lama Tashi's voice is very clear.
Many CDs of deep voice chanting (particularly those made by large groups) are difficult to appreciate because it's often hard to make out individual words.
This is a wonderful exception.
Listen to the sound clips on this site. If you don't like deep voice, then skip this one. If you want to check out deep voice mantras, this is a great place to start.
Not what I was hoping for..........2006-08-21
This just wasn't what I was looking for. I wish I had taken the time to listen to the sample tracks, but a slow dial-up connection and the Grammy nomination made me skip that step. The voice is way too guttural for my liking...it just doesn't feel calming, peaceful or meditative to me. I would definitely recommend listening to the sample tracks and making your own decision before buying.
The Sound of the Void.......2006-07-09
I agree, this is the very best Tibetan chant cd there is. My previous favorites were the releases by the Monks from Drepung Loseling, but here, their own chantmaster proves that sometimes a single minimal voice resonates deeper than many.
I am not the first to observe the similarities between Tibetan chant and the almost Zen state acheived by doom/drone bands like Sunn 0))). For those coming from that angle, this is a perfect document to prove the point that such bands are only channelling the deep universal OM. This is not only the best Tibetan Chant release available, but it is also one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard - truly profound. The sound of Lama Tashi's voice is that of the emptiness uncovered in meditation. Listen and live in the void.
The Best Chant CD I have ever Purchased.......2006-04-18
I have bought every Gyoto Monk and chant CD I could find and this is by far the best. Lama Tashi's voice is powerful and meditative. They VERY gradually increase his voice with his own harmonics in the chants which makes it sound like 10 of him in the middle of each chant. It is exactly what I was looking for all these years. I can see why this won a grammy. It is by far the best chant CD I have found -- anywhere. It really brings out the meditative power when you listen to this while sitting.

The best singing bowl CD.......2007-05-22
This one is the best tibetan singing bowl CD I have. If you make your own contribution by relaxation, It takes you into the theta brain state easily.
Very good but not the best.......2007-04-10
In my humble opinion, the best Tibetan Bells or bowls cd I have heard is Benjamin Iobst's "7 Metals". It is easier to listen to.
Although I like Becher's offering - don't get me wrong, I do own it and play it - I just think that Iobst's is more listenable and has a better meditative quality. Sometimes Becher's sound patterns seem redundant and almost annoying.
I also highly recommend the crystal bowl offerings of the "Crystal Voices". These have an even higher vibration, that is a more spiritual/mental effect on me, but they too can be annoying if you are not in the mood for them.
For Tibetan Bowls, I have heard about 8 different cd's and I consider Iobst's the best. But Becher's isn't bad.
Amazing grace.......2007-01-25
Not only beautiful but effective, I find listening to this cd very helpful to meditation. Last evening I felt the bowls were ringing me.
Otherworldly.......2006-05-13
I use this CD and his other release for meditation. This artist in a different level than the rest tibetan bowl players. This CD creates a deep level theta trance. The ironic part is that it holds you there throughout the CD.
One with my spirit.......2005-05-27
The sounds from this CD are amazing for meditation or massage. The sounds vibrate deeply within me, slowing my heartbeat, and floating my spirit on waves of bliss. At times the sound is almost electric, deep and thrumming, causing my nerves to resonate. This is my favorite CD for massage. I can leave my body in the capable hands of my massuese, and let my spirit travel to another level.

Customer Reviews:
Nice groove but nothing at all to do with Tibet.......2007-05-18
Karl Maddison is one of those studio wizards, a guy who with a computer and a keyboard can create a sound that otherwise might require a roomful of musicians. He deploys these skills quite effectively on his first solo release of "new age" music, a collection apparently inspired by Himalayan culture entitled Tibetan Groove.
Besides owning his own Yorkshire recording studio and producing for other musicians and for film and television, Maddison is also proficient on a number of instruments, though he started out on and continues to favor the guitar, the lead instrument on the eight songs that make up this album. Maddison plays mostly acoustic over slow to mid-tempo beats accented by synthetic flourishes and an occasional bowl, bell or gong. Except for one track featuring synthetic tabla and another with a tiny harp-like fill, there are no lutes, kotos, erhus, or other traditional Asian instruments or players on this recording, though flautist Julian Wiggins on several tracks lends what could be considered an Asian-like sound. One or two tracks, such as Nam-Tso, might put you in mind of more recent work from Mike Oldfield, but for the most part the music on Tibetan Groove is more contemporary instrumental (a relative of smooth jazz) and most of the songs would fit quite comfortably on any Third Force album.
That's not to say it's bad music. In fact it's quite a tasty album of laid-back grooves, great for use in the background when you're working, or maybe a leisurely bicycle ride through the countryside.
Tibetan Groove was originally released in 2006 on UK New Age label MG Music under the title "On the Road To Tibet." Many MG Music recordings are now being distributed in the US by Gemini Sun, often retitled with new packaging.
ANYTIME-ANYWHERE.......2007-05-14
I love this CD. As I saw that Nicholas Gunn recommended this (and I love his music), I listened to some track samples and once I heard "Friendship Highway" I knew I had to have it. I listen to this CD at all times of the day -- morning, during the day while I'm just fiddling around the house, when I'm reading a book, at night when I go to bed. It's a really soothing album and definitely has some great grooves and as a singer I really like to sing along to them and add my own. I'd like to work with Karl (would you care to produce my album?). Anyway, Friendship Highway is my favorite. That guitar and melody are beautiful. If I'm leaving the house to go out for a motorcycle ride I put that on before I leave so that it will stick in my mind. Love it. My kitties love it too. Check it out.
Majestic Maddison Music.......2007-05-14
This is a fantastic instrumental album with modern jazz grooves and upbeat New Age electronic melodies. Reminds me somewhat of both David Arkenstone and Mehdi (without Mehdi's annoying handclaps and overdone programmed percussion). There is not a bad track on Tibetan Groove.....I sincerely hope that Karl Maddison will produce more of the same!

Album Description
"This is one of the best CDs I've heard in a long time - a compelling complement to a massage session. The music slows down your brainwaves and induces a peaceful, calm and meditative state, which assists in healing. A must for massage therapists." -CREATIONS MAGAZINE
"Walter M's inventive and inspiring playing of the traditional Tibetan singing bowls opens the soul to a vast interior heaven. When I first heard him play I was moved to tears of joy." - Jodie Bergsma, Bergsma Gallery Press
Golden Spa Tones is the first release in the Healing Spa Series, produced for use by healthcare professionals working in spas, day spas & retreats - specifically, for use by massage therapists in the treatment room. The long slow alto and silver flute tones are a beautiful complement to the deep harmonics of the Tibetan bowls. · Dean Evenson is a top-selling sound healing pioneer who has been producing healing, meditative music since 1979. Walter Makichen is a leading spiritual teacher, healer and founder of the Center For Self. His recent book Spirit Babies, published by Random House, popular with parents and couples wishing to become parents.

Deeply Relaxing.......2007-05-11
I'm a yoga teacher who teaches a very nurturing practice called Restorative/Therapeutic Yoga. I use this cd each time i conduct a class, workshop or individual session and find that students are able to really "drop down" into their bodies and let day-to-day life fall away. Highly recommended.
This CD will move you down to your soul!.......2006-12-02
I don't usually write reviews, but this CD really stands out and deserves high marks. Once I listened to the sample tracks, I just had to buy it (I even got one as a Christmas gift for a relative). I was surprised at how deeply the music on this disc touched me. I received it today, and couldn't wait to play it - I wasn't disappointed! It is beautifully done! I have heard other singing bowl CDs, but they are almost too overpowering. This CD has just the right combination of music, and is the most relaxing and peaceful thing I've heard in a long time. The flute, bells, and ocean sounds, in combination with the singing bowls, just melts all the stress of the day away.
I can't wait to listen to it with earphones!
You won't be disappointed with the CD - it's wonderful!
ENJOY! :o)
Truly magical.......2006-08-20
Unlike many new age music which sends you out of the body on melodic fantasies , these compositions bring you deep peace while allowing you to stay present in your body. Anynone who has not heard tibetan bowls before will undoubtely be touched by their multiple sounds and out of range vibrations which are designed to allow humans to experience their divinity within.
Extremely Meditative Music for all the Chakras.......2006-04-18
Golden Spa Tones takes me to a deep space where I can let go of any thoughts and completely relax. The resonant tones of the Tibetan bowls take one on a journey through all the chakras. The deep base tones touch a place deep inside and the higher bowls and flutes lift the spirit. Highly recommended for all healing modalities, yoga and meditation.

Clean, Pure, Beautiful Crystalline Sound !!.......2005-01-16
Though I have heard many chakra cds over the years this one takes the cake so far. The tones are very clean and pure sounding, on key. You will DEFINITELY feel more relaxed, centered and at peace as the songs will sweep your mind free of clutter. This was exactly the kind of quality cd I was looking for! It has 7 chakra songs, a sonic massage song and 7 plain chakra tones. Great for meditation or listening to in the car in hectic traffic.
nothing more peaceful out there this this!.......2002-04-29
I am going thru so much stress and got this for myself. I play it at least once a day...I live with two teens who shut off my music when I walk out of the room and NOT ONCE has this been shut off. NOT ONCE! I think I am not the only one benefitting from this peaceful healing vibrations on this CD.
I play this when I wake up to get going and when things get chaotic in my home; huge vibe changes instantly! very beautiful! Essential CD. Treat yourself to it. I don't buy many CD's, this one I am so glad to have found.
Great CD.......2000-11-23
This CD is wonderful. You need decent speakers to fully enjoy it's resonating music. sounds vibrate and move in different parts of your body releasing trapped emotions and making meditation easy. The music unviels the simplisity humanity and wisdome of the tibetian people.

This C.D. has been the most perfect meditation music I have ever ever heard. It really vibrates through you. Each time I hear it, it takes me some place else. I only listen to it when I am still. jody loyd

Wonderful Meditative Music.......2007-05-14
This is a fantastic CD. I use it for my yoga classes.
not her best.......2005-05-09
I love Gabrielle Roth, and have worn out copies of "initiation" and "bones", but this CD just gathers dust for me insteading of making me want to dance.
Unique.......2000-05-31
Too many albums put the word "Tibetan" in the title and end up being the artificial flavor of the month. This CD, on the other hand, is the only one I've found (and I've bought dozens looking) that really bridges the gap between the Tibetan sense of sacred mystery, and the musical vernacular of the west. And with a Russian rock star no less! Listen to this album, and you will find your mind has reached a still place that other "Tibetan" music cannot touch.
For those who are addicted to the western sound "byte" culture, a five word review: YOU MUST BUY THIS ALBUM!
Great tape for yoga and meditation.......1999-07-29
We use this tape in my yoga class during the beginning centering meditation and Chen Rezi is just the most beautiful and awesomely calming piece of music I have heard. As a matter of fact I intend to use this when I am in labor, as I am expecting my third child this December. Namaste!
