Album Description

Deriving from a variety of influences such as Muse, Chevelle, Blindside and Linkin Park, Red brings a unique blend of heavy guitars, intense string arrangements and dynamic vocals. They are quickly gaining fans with an exceedingly intense live show every bit as compelling as their debut cd. Already touring heavily in the mid-west and west coast, Red has quickly made many fans along the way. With over 20,000 friends on myspace, the band makes it a priority to write each and every fan back personally. Randy Armstrong says, "It is important that our fans see us as genuine guys who care." The songs on their debut release deal with the struggles that all humans face, while leading listeners to a place of redemption in the midst of the brokenness. Red hopes their music impacts people in a way that causes them to not feel alone in their struggles. Randy explains, "I hope that our music has a profound impact on people. You never know what people are dealing with in their every day lives, but I am willing to bet that at some point, we all have experienced the same feelings of anger, sadness, confusion, etc. Our music talks about a lot of those times that we have struggled dealing with those feelings and the situations that caused them. I hope our music makes them feel like they are not struggling alone." Produced by Dove nominated producer Rob Graves and mixed by Ben Grosse, End of Silence releases June 13th. Not Much To Write Home About.......2007-07-23

Red are a lot like what you hear on rock radio today. Comparable to Breaking Benjamin or Trapt, they have a vocalist who emotes with loud and clean vocals, and a band who can churn out the simplest, yet catchiest tunes. One exception though, even as a new band, Red severely lack the chops of their peers. The songs, if you can call them that, are often just half baked melodies and depend on the predictable sing-scream-sing formula. More often than not, you'll find a song floating away from a good idea and not returning. It should go without saying that if the generic song-titles weren't enough indication, Red aren't exactly travelling through uncharted waters. Don't be mistaken, unoriginality isn't always bad, as it's nearly impossible for a new band to be original these days, but Red just aren't yet up to the task of making something memorable. There is an interesting element to the music, thanks to a classy string section, but the album would be stripped of much of it's appeal and identity without it. The guitars are boring, the drums are simplistic, and the lyrics are quite trite and laughable. A good song will sound good even without lots of production, yet, if you took away the studio trickery of "End Of Silence," you wouldn't have much left. If you like your music safe and predictable, melodramatic and bland, then Red's debut might be up your alley. The potential, however, is there. Red can be a good band. But they need to sit down, write some actual songs next time, and not rely on so much production. As it is, however, there are far too many other bands doing this sound much better already.

Awsome CD.......2007-07-16

Where did they come from? I was looking to get the new Linkin Park but after I read mixed reviews people were actually recommending RED so I gave it a shot. RED gets more play than the new Linkin Park now. Great CD, no need to fast forward, just put it in and let it play.

Christian Rock SUCKS.......2007-06-21

I really like the song Breathe. I thought about buying the album until I discovered I was tricked into liking a song by a Christian "rock" group, lol!!! So much for Red...

Surprise, Surprise!.......2007-06-08

This is the second time this year that I went out on a limb and just bought some music that someone had recommended in their review of some other album (both of which were garbage albums from previously great bands).

This is the second time this year that I've been surprised at how good my "limb" decision music is (the other was Stage, which I've since decided is one of the greatest rock albums I've ever heard).

Although End of Silence is relatively short, it fills that time frame with great songs. The Already Over tracks are probably my favorite; they contrast each other perfectly with a mix of heavy riffs, piano, violin, and screaming/crooning lyrics that really set the tone for the whole CD.

The only negative that I found with the work, as a whole, was that RED seems a little short on variety, which could make the album a slightly predictable. It's certainly not redundant, though, and as they mature I'm sure they'll experiment with new sounds.

The Bottom Line: At 4.2 stars, it's a definite buy.

What all can I say? I love the band RED, I first heard of them through their song "Already over" on my Christian rock HITS CD, and I became a fan, and I became more of a fan when I bought this CD Of theirs, all of the songs are 100% awesome! I wasn't a huge fan of much hard rock until I started listening to more Christian rock groups, such as Seventh Day Slumber, Disciple, Pillar, P.O.D. etc... and now I love Christian rock music, and this album is really awesome, I think you all should buy it, if you like hard rock or Christian rock, you'll love this CD!

The Carthusians in their authentic manner have retained the essence of plain chant, without any accompaniment. It is like being with them and seeing how it has been said, that they ae halfway to Heaven !

The musical audio companion to Into Great Silence film, Groening's selection and recording resonates with the music and sounds of a cloistered community. Evocative of Henri Nouwen's accounts of the Desert Fathers and their ministry. The components advanced by Arsenius to Flee, Be Silent, and Pray All Ways acquires a superb example in this CD. None of the cloying production of earlier popularization of gregrian chants, this music is for no audience but God's by his community.

I thought this was only for monastic follwers. I was wrong. Silence rocks, and if you can't keep it down (verbally), you're SO LOST.
We look for perfection in others.They do not find it useful. We are not perfect, we only think we are.

The theater experience was phenominal, totally quiet before, during and after.
You can't go home th same person!!!

One suspects that Paul Simon cringes a bit when he listens to Simon & Garfunkel's 1966 breakthrough release. Lines from "I Am a Rock" ("For a rock feels no pain / And an island never cries") and the title track ("Fools, said I, you do not know / Silence like a cancer grows") are the essence of sophomoric poetry. And who but a couple of self-serious young men would sequence the suicide odes "Richard Cory" and "A Most Peculiar Man" back to back? That said, every callow couplet found here is counterbalanced by words that are disarmingly guileless. The unabashed romanticism of "Kathy's Song" is truly poignant; it ranks with "For Emily" and "The Only Living Boy in New York" among the duo's most resplendent performances. "April Come She Will" has a similar innocent appeal, while the title track, despite its overwrought moments and Tom Wilson's tacked-on production, is a folk-rock landmark. It's not hard to find fault with The Sounds of Silence, but it's easier still to bask in its inchoate splendor. (The 2001 reissue adds the bonus track "The Blues Run the Game" plus three unreleased 1970 demos.) --Steven Stolder

The Pinnacle of Folk Pop/Rock.......2007-05-09

This album lacked the self-aggrandazing bombast of 'Bridge Over Trouble Water' (which I hold was a little too comfortable with its brilliance, although with a touch more humility than the Beatles Sgt. Pepper), but more importantly, I don't see it as a rawer sketch of Bridge Over Troubled Water of the work Simon and Garfunkel produced in between, but I believe this IS their definitive statement, their magnum opus. What I like most is Simon's atatention to melody and music AS well as the lyrics. It did not revel in its own lyrical cleverness like Dylan, yet the lyric messages were poignant and well developed and despite the simplicity never lacked thematic depth. So redolent of the times, this was a coherently brilliantly album that shoots through the mush of drab 'folk rock' clones like a flashlight in the dark.

This was the first S&G album I ever heard and I think it's probably their best work. Simon's lyrics have rarely been more crisp, and the haunting refrain of loneliness touches every song on this album. The bonus tracks are largely filler compared with the rest of the album, but this is quintessential folk rock at its apex.

This British act, led by Harriet Wheeler, was always one of the more uplifting members of the shoe-gazer crowd, a point emphasized here by lovely lead single "Summertime" (which was released at precisely the wrong time of the year, sadly). The five-year hiatus from their last album has created a more mature, strum-along sound best heard on "Homeward," the guitar-textured "Another Flavor," and the orchestral "She." As for Wheeler, she's enchanting even when singing a track called "Monochrome." --Jeff Bateman

Out of the years and years of music I've heard in my life, this sublime album has held up over time to be among the five or six CD's I've listened to the most and still listen to regularly. Classic pop melodies with beautiful accoustic and electric guitar work, combined with mostly optimistic lyrics and longing, soaring, sensual vocals. It's both immediately accessible and subtle enough to improve with repeated listenings, with hooks that don't tire and a voice that always draws me back. Love it.

A Modern Classic. Perfection on a plastic disc........2006-01-14

I can't say enough good things about this album. I was a bit put off by the extremely pop nature of the first single, Summertime. I took a chance and bought the record anyway and I'm so glad I did. Nearly every song on the record will get under your skin and they're all so gorgeous. I am fascinated by the concept of perfection in pop music and this album is THE epitome. The songwriting, the production and performance are all flawless. Static and Silence is so brilliant it virtually glows. If you could open a window to heaven I am certain this is what you would hear.

Shows why the Sundays are so beloved and influential.......2006-01-03

Notoriously reclusive and uninterested in being celebrities, the Sundays have released only three CDs since their 1988 formation. Naturally, hardcore fans salivate for more. Static & Silence showcases the Sundays at their best, and shows why, among all the bands in the alt-pop-rock genre, they are quite possibly the very best. There are numerous standout tracks here, "Summertime," When I'm Thinking About You," "Cry," So Much," to name a few. (The editorial reviewer apparently doesn't get the irony of releasing an ironic love song called "Summertime" in the first days of autumn). This CD is much more concise and catchy than Blind, yet they do meander into more atmospheric realms as well. They have managed to perform a delicate balancing act, bringing in strings, flutes, keyboards, all the while keeping their signature sound completely intact. Their sound has expanded greatly, they play more like a rock band than ever, Gavurin actually serves up a fairly ripping guitar solo in "So Much," even so the result does not betray any of their previous stuff (take that, U2 and REM!). Of course, the main attraction is the vocals of Harriet Wheeler, who hasn't lost her girlish appeal and delights listeners with many, many spine-tingling moments thanks to her lilting, lyrical soprano, adorable English accent, asymmetrical melodies, and inventive harmonies. Long after so many bands in this genre have jumped the shark, the Sundays' credibility is still very much intact.

In my opinion, their best album. It's soothing, deep, atmospheric and warm. Harriet's voice is sweet and hauntingly beautiful. It's such a shame there wasn't more music from the band after this album. But what a wonderful end. I truly am thankful for the music of the Sundays. This album is their most uplifting and every song is magnificent and lush.

I need more music from the sundays. I think Harriet wheeler has one of the best female voices. I love there music. If you like cranberries get this.

Solid album by a post-grunge supergroup.......2007-04-14

This 2005 debut of Dark New Day which features former memebers of Creed, Sevendust, DoubleDrive, Virgos Merlot, and Stereomud is a slightly above average rock album.

This group takes the earnestness of Creed, the intensity of Sevendust, and the dark, brooding riffs of Alice in Chains to form the basis of its sound. "Brother" and "Follow the Sun Down" are easily the two best songs of the album. "Brother" is a lonely song about missing one's family and "Follow the Sun Down" is an acoustic tune about making a fresh start in life.

The guitars of Clint Lowery and Troy McLawhorn provide good riffs throughout this album and Will Hunt is a solid percussionist. Brett Hestla vocals are, however, somewhat thin and I think Clint Lowery could have handled the duties of lead singer just as well if not better.

Clint Lowery's new project is far cry from Sevendust roots.......2007-04-12

But it is still very good. A lot of the guitars on this cd have a trace of Sevendust style riffs, because Lowery was such a huge part of that band, but they are used in a more traditional hard rock sense, not with the metal-tinged, energetic styles of 7Dust. Dark New Day manages a pretty solid debut. The vocals are top notch, and the lead single, "brother" is a very good song. But there are a lot of other bands out there with similar styles, so I don't know if there is that much here to separate them from the pack. I think they have room to grow. I give it 3.5 stars.

Solid Effort.......2007-04-07

If you like Creed, Fuel, The Panic Channel, Filter, Army of Anyone, then most likely you will like this band. What caught my attention was Corey Lowery, the touring bassist of the former Creed. It's actually a good cd so it will be interesting to see if they do a follow-up or go by the wayside as it seems like today alot of bands are just producing one album, breaking up, and then partnering with members of other groups to begin again. Great listen though.

Does Dark New Day sound like Sevendust? Yeah, more than a little, but there's a different side to the beast here! It's not necessarily softer or harder it just has a more alternative feel (a little but really just a little less metal than Sevendust) than what it's being compared to. There's more of a hard rock feel here. The guitar work here is great and the melodies and harmonies are amazing. Everyone in the band sings and they use this to it's fullest extent. Clint Lowery proves he's a far greater song writer than John Connolly (from Sevendust) here. I'm sorry I love John's guitar work and love the new Sevendust cd Alpha but Clint's music is really artfully done and well thought out. So is Dark New Day better than Sevendust? I think they have the potential to be! A lot of tracks here stand out amazingly and then some just blur together if you don't listen to them a lot. There's a distinctive sound here but I'm going to mention the best songs.
1. Taking Me Alive--(10/10)-Opens with an awesome drum beat and then some simple guitar riffs. Vocal melody soars over the music and when the chorus comes in after a quick build up it explodes in your face. Great solo in this one.
2. Brother--(10/10)-The first single and for a reason. Great sound, the main riff, is very Sevendust-ish. Harmonies are amazing on here and the drumming actually captures your attention. No solo but interesting song structure which isn't your basic chorusversechorus deal.
3. Pieces--(10/10)-A slow hard one. Pretty basic but good groovey and heavy verse. Nice atmospheric riff for the pre-chorus and then the vocals completely take over on the chorus as the melody shines. Great moody song.
4. Evergreen--(10/10)-A love song that's chock full of a really great and very complicated guitar melody. Again a lot of harmony and the guitar work is just so beautiful. Softer but still rocks pretty hard.
5. Follow the Sun Down--(9.5/10)-Alternative feel that works on this track but falls flat on others (Free). Epic sounding great end to an album.

The main problem with the album is that the band sometimes just doesn't fit the alternative feel to well. Free just sounds almost too quirky and Never Enough while a good tune is just not really special. The reviewed tracks are stand out tracks that all sound different from each other. While the rest of the album sounds like slight variants of these "molds".

In their early days, Vas was often compared to Lisa Gerrard and Dead Can Dance, but they transcended that comparison long ago. Greg Ellis surrounds her with a global percussion orchestra of the imagination, mixing udu drums, frame drums, mridangam, dumbeks, and just about anything else from his global groove storeroom to create the throbbing rhythmic undertow of their music. His own "Moksha" for percussion, cellos, and bass is an epic, symphonic journey. Azam Ali sings in English for the first time on Feast of Silence, setting Longfellow's "The Reaper and the Flowers" and her own title track. "Feast of Silence" is a veiled reference to her personal travails of the last four years including the death of her mother, her first trip back to Iran since she was a child, and the demise of her personal relationship with Ellis. Inspired beyond words............2006-10-23

Of all the VAS albums, this is my favourite, and an interesting evolution. The writing, song arrangements, production, the ambience, everything. And of course, above all...the beautiful angelic voice of Azam Ali. Every time I play this album for someone, they say "oh my God, who is that singer?" Greg Ellis' rhythms are brilliant here, very haunting and hypnotic, and not overdone as sometimes is the case with this type of music. The song Mandara floored me from the first time I heard it. The structure, the tension buildup, and the amazing vocal performance are just breathtaking.

Also great is Azam Ali's other project Niyaz, which has a more Middle-Eastern/Persian influence along with some electronic samples.

Breathtakingly Beautiful.......2006-10-06

First of all, a special thank you to Chelle, my best buddy on the net. She purchased this album for my birthday, from my amazon wishlist. I am forever grateful to have discovered Azam Ali, VAS & Niyaz through Chelle. ;-) Since receiving the CD in the mail yesterday, I've played it twice. Both times were mesmerizing and captivating. I absolutely LOVE "Feast of Silence". Nothing better could've come from this album, seriously. The tribal, ambient and wordly sounds in the recording are incredible, and I had to indulge by listening to the CD twice in a matter of 24 hours. A few, excellent artists come to mind when I listen to "Feast of Silence". These are them: (Loreena McKennitt, Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Diane Arkenstone, Ofra Haza). Because of Azam's remarkable, versatile voice, she can sing any style of music and do no wrong. I already have her "Portals of Grace" album, and the extractions from the "Elysium for the Brave" CD, but they aren't as great as this title from VAS. Azam Ali and Greg Ellis make a fantastic duo and I'm so proud of them for working together for so long. Hope they never stop! Greg is a very handsome man and so talented. Without his percussion work on the album, it just wouldn't sound the same. Just the cover photo alone sold me right away. I'm attracted to albums when they have attractive covers...so this helped me a lot in my choice for a wishlist item.

As I write in all my reviews, I look for sound quality. For "Feast of Silence", the sound is excellent. Unfortunately, the album is shorter than I thought, although...the songs are long. But all really great albums are too short. ;-) As I mentioned earlier, Azam reminded me of Loreena McKennitt and Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance) throughout the CD. And, I didn't expect Azam to sing such moving, versatile pieces of music. She can certainly put her own style into virtually anything she sings. "Feast of Silence" is a must-have for anyone's music collection. And at least I know to classify the album under "World"...as sometimes it's hard to classify such a masterpiece. There aren't any favorites on "FOS", because they're all super. The title track is just as stunning as the rest of them. I can't stress enough, how good this album is. You must have it!

Artwork is beautiful throughout the package. There is only 1 photo of the duo inside the booklet, but the entire layout has a beautiful design. The disc itself is a dark terra-cotta (almost brown) in color, with black "lacey" artwork in an Indian style. It's very nice. I don't know if the CD was only housed in a jewel case everywhere, but mine is. Visit the Narada site and check out more info on Azam Ali and her music (solo & collaborative). You won't regret it.

Feast for the ears.......2006-06-25

I have been listening to this one for several days now and must admit that I am impressed with it. It shows that this duo have grown quite a bit and it comes out almost as good to me as Ali's solo work. There are only a few brief moments on here that I just can't make it through (namely "the reaper in the flowers". sorry folks but this is boring). The Bulgarian vocal arrangements are particularly wonderful, as is the touch of Indian flavor on the third track. Azam Ali is reaching new levels as a vocalist on "Feast of Silence" and Greg Ellis is also coming up nicely...

Azam Ali also makes her English debut with this album, and does so fairly nicely. It's not a constant onslaught, as I had thought it might be, but it is there.

If you have not heard Vas before, and enjoy world music with deep classical undertones then this might be something you should check out. Azam Ali's voice is simply glorious.

Time Enough.......2005-08-05

I've followed Vas haphazardly for some time now, from the days when they were true minimalists, focused on Azam Ali's expressive voice and Greg Ellis's percussion work. The strong Medieval and Middle Eastern flavor was haunting as Ali created her own language to express emotions both plaintive and ecstatic. Their work gradually filled out and became increasingly complex and then, suddenly, they stopped recording. Sometimes the connection between love and creativity takes a long time to break and heal over.

Feast of Silence marks an overcoming of differences. Ali and Ellis work so well together that it's a bit of a relief to see that they have managed to find a new accommodation. Even more interesting it the fact that the music is a genuine departure for them in the midst of Ali's traditional stylings experiments like 'In Our Faith' appear. The music is mostly acoustic, but it dances on the edge with occasional electronic tidbits. In addition Ali steps over into the use of actual lyrics, revealing and underlying poetic spirit in work like 'Feast of Silence.'

For most of the cuts they work together. Each also has a track without the other - 'Moksha' (Elllis) and 'Feast of Silence' (Azam Ali). If I had to pick a favorite, though, it would be Izgrejaia, which is one long joyful effort. Joining the two leads are Tyler Bates one guitar and keyboard, Pejman Hadadi on tombak, Deepak Ram on bansuri, Cameron Stone on cello, Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass, Naser Musa on oud and Brent Meyer on bouzuki. Far more musicians than they usually work with.

I hope this presages more albums to come from an innovative pair that have created their own musical niche.

Hypnotic, emotional, and unique.......2005-07-29

I've been a fan of Vas since I bought their third release, "In the Garden of Souls" a few years ago. It is has been far to long for me between releases, but the wait was worth it. This album is incredible. It is not only my favorite Vas album, but one of my all time favorite CDs.

The music is moving and rythmic with soaring female vocals. The vocals are from the soul, real and honest but somehow perfect at the same time with true emotion and depth. Most of the songs are without words (she sings in toungues), but on this album, she sings some words for the first time. I was worried that this wouldn't work, but it does and really expands their sound. In terms of instrumentation, the sheer myriad of instruments used on all their releases, including CD is mind boggling.

My favorite song is "Amrita (Churning the Sea of Milk)" which starts off slowly and then builds in a dramatic way. I also really like "Izgrejala" with its unique harmonies.

Azam Ali is amazing at vocal layering. Her harmonies on this album are perfect and her voice is as emotional as ever. I'm not sure how she conveys so much with her voice, but she can sing a single note and bring me to tears.

For fans of Vas' previous works, I highly recommend this CD. If you are a newcomer and you are wondering where to start, this is a great jumping off point for their amazing musicianship.

Described aptly in the liner notes as a "panoramic view of where he's been and where he's going," this weighty double-disc captures Van in all of the guises he adopted in the 1980s and early '90s. There are several devotional pieces, a couple of splendid rants ("Professional Jealousy" and "Why Must I Always Explain"), two collaborations with the Chieftains, and jazzy swingers driven by Georgie Fame's organ. The real heart of the album is Van's evocation of his childhood in lyrics and arrangements that capture the joys of discovering rock & roll while growing up in Belfast amid that city's conflicting passions. There are several high points for connoisseurs of his stream-of-consciousness lyrical rambles, notably "On Hyndford Street" and "Take Me Back." As an album, the mood swings too dramatically to be coherent, but in its individual parts there is evidence of true genius. --Rob Stewart

An epic from Van's neglected period...........2007-06-04

This is an epic masterpiece from Van, with no wasted songs or words. Van made a lot of great albums in the 1990's, but aside from his fans (who still buy his works), most industry "experts" ignored him. It's their loss. This is one of his most complex, eclectic albums, with some of the best, most moving work he's ever done. I'm Not Feeling It Anymore is an angry song, but not an alienating one. The cover of I Can't Stop Loving You (with The Chieftains) is incredibly moving. Village Idiot is a real charmer. Van's cover of See Me Through Part II (Just a Closer Walk with Thee) is one of his best songs, and a great cover of a great gospel ballad. Van's monologue during the song sends this song into that great spiritual realm that Van has gone to his whole career. Take Me Back is another great epic Van song, along with the title track, one of Van's most beautiful songs. Many songs (like See Me Through Part II) really shine with great interplay between the organist and the pianist (something Van's 90's album did exceptionally well). The Chieftains make appearances here, enhancing the songs beautifully (most notably on a cover of I Can't Stop Loving You). Sadly, as of this writing, this album is out of print, but hopefully they'll all be remastered. They surely deserve to be.

I'm astounded many .................2005-08-01

...pick & choose,pull apart these 2 discs.I red lined my cassette recording copy of both and fire it back through a 16 channel Mackie mixing board,Peavey amps,subs,mids,horns blah blah blah and every single composition laid down here is pure and fine love from the soul.Now,who can't feel that?You know Van.This was 14 years ago on here.....his oldness is slowing him down tremendously.He DOES show up for gigs too!!

An Ambitious Project.......2005-02-05

Hymns To The Silence is one of those recordings I owned on cassette, but hadn't yet got around to replacing it with CDs. Since I rarely play cassettes anymore, it lay neglected in its case for years until recently. When I played it through again, I realized that I had been missing some great music so when I saw the CD on sale recently at San Diego's Mojo Records for 14 dollars I couldn't resist the upgrade.
Before reviewing the CD, I read other reviewers' comments and was surprised by the number of reviewers who strongly liked one disc but thought the other filler. In my view, there are some great songs and a few throwaways on both of them. And I think its funny that some reviewers complain about Van's religious songs. Hey, Van is a spiritual guy! Get over it!
On disc one, my favorites are Professional Jealousy, Ordinary Life, So Complicated, and the soulful See Me Through Part II.
On disc two, I like All Saints Day, Be Thou My Vision, Carrying A Torch, Quality Street (the music more than the words), It Must Be You, and I Need Your Kind of Loving.
What's a throwaway? Well, I'm not much into his childhood narratives, we've heard them all before. And then there is the incessant griping about the price of fame. But other than the few songs in those veins there are a lot of worthwhile songs including a few that are among Van's best such as the previously mentioned Ordinary Life, Carrying A Torch and It Must Be You. If the lyrics weren't so trite and repetitious, Quality Street would be in that rank as well.
I have been a Van Morrison fan from the beginning and so have heard his high points and his low. Hymns To the Silence is an ambitious project of such scope that it would be hard for him to be on top of his game musically for the duration, and he isn't. So I can't give this CD five stars. There are many Van Morrison albums that are superior overall to this one. But the quality of the music is enough to give it a four-star rating. So if you are a Van Morrison fan, Hymns to the Silence belongs in your CD collection.

INSPIRATIONAL MASTERPIECE.......2003-06-15

Hymns To The Silence is an opus magnum where Morrison's talent reaches awesome new heights. The album impresses on many levels: the lyrical ingenuity, melodic beauty, intelligent arrangements and above all the expert mastery of many different musical styles, including country, folk, soul, rock and gospel.

Although every track is memorable and tuneful, my favourites include I'm Not Feeling It Anymore with its galloping rhythms and flowing melody, the rocking Ordinary Life, a wry observation on life, the jaunty, jazzy So Complicated and the beautiful authentic country song I Can't Stop Loving You.

Very personal observations like Professional Jealousy and Why Must I Always Explain have more of the folky feel about them, especially the second one with its hypnotic melody line. Perhaps the greatest moment is Be Thou My Vision, an extraordinarily powerful hymn that is one of this artist's best descriptions of spiritual ecstasy.

In this regard, the title track is gripping too, but more subdued and restrained, creating a feeling of awe. See Me Through (Just A Closer Walk With Thee) is also very moving but a more traditional slice of gospel and it reminds me of Astral Weeks. The soulful song Take Me Back with its wistful harmonica likewise has a touch of that great album.

Hymns To The Silence is an uplifting work of genius on a par with Astral Weeks, Moondance and Tupelo Honey but provides greater variety than any of them. Every track here has some special quality and the alternating musical styles make it a wonderful and inspiring listening experience.

If the basic thematic elements of this Bruce Willis star vehicle--American military unit gets cut off behind enemy lines in a guerilla-besieged African backwater--have parallels with Ridley Scott's fierce, unrelenting Black Hawk Down, composer Hans Zimmer (who scored both films) has conjured an entirely different musical soul for this adventure. Where his Black Hawk score turned on a gritty, often violent clash of musical cultures, his work here is richly introspective and tinged with a mature sense of melancholy. African rhythms and melodic elements bubble to the surface throughout, but in subtly powerful ways that often recall the best of Peter Gabriel's world music ventures. Zimmer has again impressively expanded his repertory company approach to scoring as well, with veteran collaborators Lisa Gerrard and Heitor Pereira joined here by Steve Jablonsky, Andreas Vollenweider and Lebo M. A Great Addition to My Hans Zimmer Collection.......2006-07-24

I am a HUGE fan of Hans Zimmer so this review may be slightly skewered but I feel this is a wonderful edition to my collection. Strange as this sounds, Mr. Zimmer and war go together like butter and toast, so picking this soundtrack up was a no-brainer.
I would have to say that his work on Tears of the Sun does not dig very deep into the well. These tracks could very easily be confused for missing tracks from The Lion King but given how that wonderful score was never released in its entirety, it is still a wonderful listening experience. As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
The music is very reminiscent of his work on Black Hawk Down and Gladiator. If you enjoyed both of those scores, I would definately recommend this one as well. It is a very good CD and worth my hard-earned money. I hope you agree...

Not as good as i thought it would be.......2006-02-01

I expected more african vocals in it.. thats the main reason i brought the cd, i recently became a fan of that kind of music.. it had like 3 songs on there that i liked, besides that this album is garbage

I have to say, I didn't know what to expect from this score. Had it been released in the mid-to-late 90's, I would have expected a blustering action score with several Media Ventures-style anthems. But then Zimmer did something different than usual with "Gladiator", and did something WAY different with "Black Hawk Down", not to mention his somber work on "The Thin Red Line." In the past few years, it's been hard to figure out what to expect from Mr. Z. WHat he gives us a here is a blend of many of his trademark sounds. The African influence from "Power of One" and "Lion King", Lisa Gerards's vocals from "Gladiator", the sad strings of "The Thin Red Line", the harsh electronics of "Black Hawk Down", and even one of Zimmer's famous action anthems. Zimmer is listed as the primary composer, but there are many contributions to the album from Lebo M, Steve Jablonsky, Jeff Rona, and others. The aspect of "Tears of the Sun" that impresses me the most is the production work. Just listen to track four and marvel at the array of ethnic and unique sounds Zimmer thrusts into his massive soundscape. To date, this is one of the best-produced albums I've heard. Like "The Thin Red Line", it's more about atmosphere than themes, but there are themes here. The main theme is inspirational, and is heard best in tracks three (on strings), six (with a male choir and Lisa Gerard), and especially track ten (as a joyous song celebration led by Lebo M with an African choir). Also impressive is the action piece heard in track nine, a relentlessly agressive epic that's preceded by a lovely and (much as I hate to use this cliched word) haunting orchestral prelude accompanied by Gerard's voice. There are parts of "Tears of the Sun" that may sound harsh to the ears on a first listen, but this is an album that you can't help but appreciate and admire, whether or not you like it. Zimmer fans all ready have it by now, but everyone else may want to listen to the avaliable sound clips before deciding to purchase it, as this sort of score is an acquired taste.

Hans Zimmer's brilliance coupled African Poetry of LEBO M.......2004-10-26

I have always been a Bruce Willis fan. So where on God's earth was I when this film was made and showing in the theatres? It must, surely, be one of the best movies he's made. I had no idea it even existed. I bought the DVD from a small Gameforce in Saint Louis, Missouri. And that only because it starred Bruce Willis.
I am a South African living in America and have been starved of good African music for a while. As a Lebo M fan, I was totally surprised to hear, what I was sure was his wonderfully passionate voice coming through the theme music at the end of the movie. WHAT A DELIGHT!. I sat glued, watching the credits as they rolled, being so sure that was Lebo M's voice. The last I heard from Lebo M was his CD "Deeper Meaning". It brought back wonderful memories. I have read through most of the reviews and was amused at Lee from San Fransico's review. However, I suppose if I didn't have the African heritage, I would, most probably felt the same as Lee did. But Lee, his voice BELONGED in that song. Lebo M is at his most passionate best at the end of the film with the African Poetry theme. You don't have to have been born and raised in Africa to appreciate passion in anyone's voice, but it was that passion that drew me to Lebo M in the first place a few years ago. He is highly underated, as far as I am concerned, in the African music field. The movie gripped me to the core and Hans Zimmer's spectacular score was riveting. It finished the film wonderfully for me. But it was Lebo M that polished it. I hope this artist, who is also well known for his disco type style of music, which I don't like, goes a long way in the world of movie soundtrack for this type of movie. I think it's time I listened to "The Lion King" soundtrack too. I think I'm getting old. I have missed some good music and some good films since I came to live in this wonderful country called America. But, I hope it's OK that I get homesick....just every once in a while.
The story line in this film has prompted me to recommend a book written by a black American journalist, Keith B. Richburg, called "Out of America". Anyone who doubts the veracity of the violence portrayed in this movie should read this book. One of the last things he says in the book is "Thank God my ancestor got out".

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).
