Shabda Yoga

"Shabda," musician Russill Paul explains in the liner notes to this collection of traditional Indian music, represents the earliest stage in the "yoga of sound," which was cultivated more than 4,000 years ago. The disc features Paul performing on a 10-string creation that he calls a "unitar," and accompanied minimally by bansuri flute, sarangi, and percussion. The principal attraction here, however, is Paul's sincere chanting of Vedic verses that, Paul mentions in the disc's well-reasoned liner notes, are considered by some to be the world's oldest extant scriptures. These drone-like Shabda mantras exude a seriousness and solemnity that convey a mystical essence that, to Western ears, might sound alien, yet are embraced by adherents for their capacity to enable healing and personal transformation. Paul offers explanatory details on each chant and presents a framework for guided meditations. Likely to appeal primarily to advanced yoga practitioners and those who have an interest in ancient Indian musical traditions. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Harmonic tranquility.......2007-08-03

What a great CD.

Although I am naive about Yoga, and the words and chants dont make sense to me... the experience was very comforting. I had goose bumps listening to the CD. The CD quality is pretty good and the chants involve harmonic echo that I found specially relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Upliftment.......2003-08-09

Shabda awakens a primal energy. It pulls me back into a time and space that seems to be from another time and space. I feel like I am re-living the feelings of the achient others that have reverberated these mantras for thousands of years. I feel like it brings the state of mind and emotion within me that was/is in all whom hear and sound them, the feelings and thougts that seem natural to accompany such resonance. I feel the areas in my body resonate with the change in pith and frequency and tonality. It has guided me into sacred space many many many times. And through its vibrations have been brought through, in and around infinity and back, always wanting to come back for more...

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL!.......2002-02-09

This is the perfect CD to meditate by--I often fall asleep to it. Very soothing-it is quite easy to picture yourself in any idyllic setting, whether desert, mountain, or beach...

5 out of 5 stars Great for doing asanas to!.......2001-08-04

I particularly like tracks 1 - containing ancient vedic chanting, and 2 - the sacred chanting of Aum. You can feel the energy flowing from this recording. There is a track that incites you to chant by repeating a series of mantras slowly, and then progressively increasing the speed of the chanting.
