If you think you've heard Handel's "Ombra mai fu" (known as his "Largo") so often, and in so many different arrangements, and sung by so many different voices, that you can no longer be moved or surprised by it, think again. This CD of Handel arias, mostly from his Theodora or the cantata La Lucrezia, ends with "Ombra mai fu," and as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it is so tender, so beautiful, so impeccably shaded, that you'll think you're hearing it for the first time. But that's only four of this disc's 67 minutes---a follow-up to Hunt Lieberson's extraordinarily successful CD of Bach cantatas. There's not a dull or disinterested moment to be heard anywhere. As the violated Lucrezia, Hunt Lieberson alternately rages against the man who raped her and turns her grief inward; the former is terrifying in its intensity, the latter makes us almost feel as if we're eavesdropping. The five arias for Irene, Theodora's friend, confidante, and the upholder of Christian beliefs are all magical prayers or statements of faith, and from Hunt Lieberson, they become real, with each word honestly conveyed and colored. The voice itself is unfailingly beautiful---warm, lush, never forced, agile when necessary---and her breath control is stunning. She is backed ideally by Harry Bicket and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the string soloists in the ensemble---the viola da gamba player, lutenist, etc.---are as gifted as she is. If you want proof that Handel was a great dramatist with a special gift for communicating emotion, all while listening to sublime sounds, this CD is a must. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A Legendary Singer........2007-03-07
I simply don't have the heart to review Mrs. Lieberson's works.
If we call Ms. Bartoli a 'great' singer, then the description of 'legendary' more aptly depicts Mrs. Lieberson.
If ever a truly good artist lived, Mrs. Lieberson is one such.
The only singer that could be recalled singing in such style is Teresa Berganza; but still, they are different.
This is one of my favourite interpretators of Haendel. Having been 'treated' by those coloraturas of arias of Haendel's period by Ms. Bartoli and others, I find the singing of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson a great relief - at last, this is what Haendel would want it to be. And I equally enjoy the singing of soprano arias by Mrs. Lieberson - the timbre is warmer, but still with all the shimmer - so different from the dark mushy tones of other celebrated 'lyrical soprano' around.
Don't want to say more. Mrs. Lieberson's leaving last year is too heavy a news for me.
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's Bach: The mind of God revealed!!.......2007-01-06
These deeply felt performances of two of Bach's most moving cantatas show this transcendent singer's combination of emotional honesty and profound musicality, all combined to reveal the very mind of God through divine redemption from suffering. The disc is to be treasured even more in light of the Ms. Lieberson's recent untimely death from cancer. I'm an agnostic, but this music makes me envious of those who can believe. Roy in Pope Valley, California
Glorious singing to treasure for decades.......2006-07-11
By any measure, America's Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is at least the equal of Italy's premier diva, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, although she does not have the same superstar status. It is difficult to recall past mezzos with clearer enunciation of English text, (as favoured in nine excerpts from Theodora), the richness of voice, displayed in full-throated fortissimo and sharply contrasted pianissimo of utmost delicacy, evokes fondest memories of the tragically doomed Kathleen Ferrier. Masterfully chosen to display every facet of Hunt Lieberson's consumate command of Handel's dauntingly difficult music, the disc's repertoire - recitatives and linkig arias from the operas Theodora and Serse, and the cantana La Lucrezia - is stunning. An unsung mezzo who makes the senses tingle!
Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson (1954-2006), supreme Handelian.......2006-07-06
I have never heard a voice purer of tone, more flexible in phrasing, and so gorgeously produced in a homogeneous column of sound such as this artist in Handel's repertoire. It is very tastefully sung (unlike a certain person whose name begins with R and ends with enaaay Fleming) and so dramatically touching that one could not help but feel that this repertoire finally has found its instrument. And how sad it is to know that this instrument has passed away two days ago. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson died two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico of breast cancer. It is such a huge loss to the opera world, as she is an artist who is still experiencing the prime of her career. The voice is just so beautiful, the tone so pure, that I lament that we can no longer hear any great roles from this artist. She will be missed.
The Stellar Hunt Lieberson.......2006-03-19
Simply put, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is one of the very best classical singers alive. She combines vocal elegance and purity with an emotional delivery that raises her above the crowd of technically proficient singers who just don't possess her depth of musical understanding or emotional commitment. Hunt Lieberson is a true artist who resists easy classfication except to say she is perfect in what she does.

More frustrating greatness.......2004-02-24
Okay, 6 disks here so there is a lot to cover.
Human Amusements At Hourly rates is the greatest hits CD. It has 32 songs, many of which are GBV's best songs. Of the 32 songs, there is only one I can't stand, "Drinker's Peace" from the wretched concept album "Same Place the Fly Got Smashed." Everything else on there is top notch. There are certainly dozens of other songs that could go on here, but a CD is only 80 minutes long. This is the CD you lend to your friends.
Demons & Painkillers is the B-sides and rarities CD. There are a lot of really good songs here as well as some truly awful ones. I can make a strong case for several of these songs belonging on the greatest hits CD (more on that later).
Delicious Pie & Thank You For Calling is the demos and outtakes CD. Eh. It is a mixed bag for me. I'd put it in the bottom 25% of the GBV releases I've come across. With so much else to choose from, I can't imagine listening to this all that often.
Live at the Wheelchair Races is the live CD. The setlist is very strong. I can even tolerate Drinker's Peace in this setting (even more reason not to have it on the greatest hits CD). The flow gets broken up a bit by changing time periods, but it really is not that bad. I will probably listen to this quite a lot.
Forever Since Breakfast is their first EP. It harks back to a time long ago when GBV were more interested in sounding like REM than The Who. There are good songs and bad songs here which shouldn't surprise anyone. If you liked Devil Between My Toes you will probably like this, and vice versa. Personally, I put half of the songs from the two releases onto my humongous GBV playlist on my MP3 player.
The DVD is great. I'm not much of a video watcher, but it is nice to have all of that stuff together on one disk (hint, hint).
The book has a lot of old pictures and a few fun anecdotes. Oh, and a description of where all of the tracks come from.
So, why 4 stars?
- I am very happy with the live CD and the DVD. Those two are 5*. The early EP gets 4 stars and I'm glad Bob decided to release it.
- The Greatest Hits CD covers too much ground. Their sound changed quite a lot in 17 years. I just don't think it sounds right to listen to all of it on one CD. Perhaps the single-CD issue sounds better with its non-chronological order. I was trying to think of a good stopping point and decided Mag Earwhig would be better.
- There are not enough alternative versions on the greatest hits CD. The two are nice, but why not have the alternate versions of Motor Away, My Valuable Hunting Knife, and Game of Pricks from the rarities CD on there as well? This would give me more reason to listen to it.
- I think it is a travesty not to have Postal Blowfish on the greatest hits CD. With the extra room on the greatest hits CD, I'd throw in a few more tracks from the rarities CD such as Unleashed! The Large Hearted Boy and Dodging Invisible Rays.
- I'd pick the best of the outtakes and add them to the rarities CD. We know there are other outtakes and demos lying around. Since the outtakes and demos CD is mostly filler anyway, I don't think it really matters to me what else goes on there.
So, in summary, there is a lot to like about this box set, but there are enough frustrations for me to keep my rating at 4*. If you are a big GBV fan, you either have gotten this already or are wondering why you haven't gotten it yet. If not, there are plenty of other CDs for you to choose from as you continue your journey towards becoming a big GBV fan.
It's Not Too Late.......2004-01-03
It is somewhat embarrassing to admit that for years I completely missed the boat when it comes to Guided by Voices-even though I've always interested in finding some of the most obscure bands out there. For reasons I'll never be able to explain, Guided by Voices has always flown just under my radar though I always knew that they were out there. Finding this box set for me is like finding one of the sources of the Nile because I can hear influences of their work on many of my other favorites. So while this johnny-come-lately kicks himself for missing out on this band for so long, I can give you one good piece of advice: go out and get the Hardcore UFOs box set and see for yourself. It is like everything, and nothing that you've heard before. My Christmas wish of receiving this box set has been fulfilled. Now I only wish that I'd been a fan all along.
Hardcore UFOs delivers the goods.......2003-11-24
It's hard not to love this boxed set. It's got a ton of great music and video for the cash, and it's a nice balance of GBVs more noteworthy pop moments as well as some really cool obscure stuff. There's something in here for every fan, from acolytes to veterans.
There are five CDs and one DVD in the box. The CDs include the greatest hits disc (also available separately), a CD of outtakes and obscurities available for the first time (these aren't even on Suitcase), a live CD, and GBV's first EP available for the very first time--it'd been out of print for years. There's an excellent photo and essay book as well, which gives colorful insight into the history, personnel, and personality of the band.
Rumor has it that Robert Pollard hand-picked the songs for the greatest hits disc. I can't quibble with his selections, for the most part, though I bet just about every hardcore fan wishes his or her favorite song made it (I was a little surprised to not find "Gold Star For Robot Boy" from Bee Thousand, "Red Men and Their Wives" from Under the Bushes, "Stabbing a Star" from Sunfish Holy Breakfast, "The Brides Have Hit Glass" from Isolation Drills, and "Useless Inventions" from Earthquake Glue in there somewhere). With so many great songs, it must have been torturous to pare the catalog down to the final 32.
I was super stoked to see "Back From Saturn X" on the B-sides disc.
The strongest offering by far is the live disc. This pastiche of songs--also hand-picked by Bob with some help--pulls together songs that flat-out rocked live along with a mix of mellow or more obscure songs. The sound quality of these is pretty phenomenal considering they were all yanked from amateur DATs and the like. I'd buy the whole box set again for this disc alone.
If you're new to GBV and you want to immediately take a deep dive, I recommend starting here or with the greatest hits CD by itself. If you like this band but have doubts about the box, nix them now and lay your money down: Hardcore UFOs does not disappoint.
Contact the Buzz.......2003-11-21
How can you go wrong with 4 CDs of GBV and the wonderful Watch Me Jumpstart film on DVD? You can't go wrong. By and large, everything here is pure gold. The only reason [I] would give it 4 stars would be because of what songs didn't make it! As far as I can tell, the only drastic omisions on the Best Of CD are: Liars Tale, Quality Of Armor, If We Wait, Jane Of the Waking Universe, Your Name Is Wild, Don't Stop Now. Everyone has their favorites, but I just can't believe these particular songs don't appear anywhere in the boxset, not even in a live version! ... Aside from that, the live Cd itself is very cool. ... For some reason, the Cobra Verde line-up is heavily featured, which is not a bad thing, just a little odd. The "unreleased songs" cd is perhaps the best part. Most of it is actually home recorded demos and early versions of songs that later appeared on album with different titles. There's some really choice stuff on here. The "rare B-sides and Matador singles, etc" is great also, but the operative word here is *Matador*. There are plenty of other EPs and 7"s on other labels that are not represented at all (Fast Japanese Spin Cycle, Static Airplane Jive, Wish In One Hand, etc.)
Finally, the DVD is great, with some nice, albeit short, extras. The 2 Easter Eggs are actually the Back To the Lake & My Kind Of Soldier videos. Why these are "hidden" I have no idea, but poke around enough and you'll find em. ... This is a great boxset, and unquestionably THE X-mas gift of this year, or any year for that matter!
Yes. Yes........2003-11-05
Fantastic box-set. I don't like writing long reviews, so all I'll say is if you're a fan of GBV, this is definitely worth the dosh.

Phenomenal.......2007-01-04
One of the best composers of the 20th century, this rendition of W.G.S's music is moving and well recorded.
Worth it for the "Lyric Quartet" alone.......2006-05-31
The first half of this album contains some of the most beautiful, breathtaking music for strings ever written, played and recorded. Very sentimental and heartfelt, quite accessible for those unfamiliar with Grant's works. I give this cd 4 stars for this 3 movement piece alone.
The same liveliness is also evident in the three works which follow, Danzaz De Panama", "Prince and the Mermaid Suite" and "Summerland".
But toward the end one will have realized that they've already heard the best that this album has to offer, as it tends to grow stale and even wearisome and transform into audio wallpaper.
The first half - fantastic.****
The second half - yawn.
But "Lyric Suite" is a tough act to follow.

Brace yourself for a slightly-wild ride (as wild as twee-pop can get): from the toy piano and upbeat energy of "Everybody Knows Canada" (a song that will be stuck in your head for days) to the reflective, slower "Your Ship Looks Like a Captain". Hummable melodies, catchy lyrics; a lot to like in these few short songs. Something for everyone.
Umm..not folk?.......2002-04-30
This review is here to tell everyone that despite what some other person said, this is not folk music. It can be more easily classified into the indie rock/indie pop category. Also this is a very good CD. Thanks.
get folked.......2001-10-03
One reviewer compared this to Great Lakes. That's ridiculous. It's like comparing the Beatles and the Bay City Rollers. Great Lakes has variety, intelligence, inventiveness; Masters of the H has only mournful dirges. This is FOLK MUSIC. If you like Peter, Paul, and Mary, or the Kingston Trio, you will like this. I don't; and I don't. Be forewarned.
Canadians, I Rejoice at Your Irresponsibility.......2000-08-04
A great find. I saw them warm up for the "Aluminum Group" in Chicago and they almost (almost) stole the show. This CD is delightful. "Meteor" is my current favorite with "Canada" and "She Plays Guitar" not far behind. "Billy Mitchell" who is a name I do not know, is also a gem.
One of my all time favorite CD's!.......2000-01-23
Every song on this CD is perfect! Perfect melodies and harmonies amongst skilled songwriting and clever lyrics! BEWARE OF FREEMDOOM! HE IS COMING SOON!

Excellent Indie Album.......2003-03-19
I can't believe I am the first person to submit a review of this album. This is an excellent CD. The Masters of the Hemisphere are (were as of Nov 2002, actually) a great indie pop band out of Georgia. Of their three primary releases, this is the most professional and developed. The band makes good use of other instruments (take time--horns, anything anything--fanatastic flute(?) stuff) to break out from the boring old indie band guitar thing. Some of the songs sound like they should have been hits in 1965, but the band is decidedly not retro. This made one reviewer's top 10 of 2002 list at Rolling Stone. Comparisons are difficult. Think Pavement without the bile, Fables of the Reconstruction era REM without any twang.

Comic Book (not) Included.......2003-05-21
this cd is absolutly awesome, and i agree with all the positive reviews for the most part. but a friend and I both ordered this album from {this website} and niether of us got the 24-page comic booklet that comes with the cd, im working with amazon to return it and see it was just a one time thing (err.. i mean two time thing), but i would suggest not expecting the comic-booklet with it. but the cd is awesome that it shouldnt even matter!
A masterful album about an evil dog.......2001-09-15
I first bumped into Masters of the Hemisphere with Pitchfork when I reviewed their self-titled debut - - the finest Athens jangle pop since early REM. I am not a Freemdoom is their sophomore effort. I wanted to be disappointed by this concept album about a cartoon dog named Freemdoom who pollutes the reservoirs of Krone Ishta, I really did. But the songwriting and storytelling are too compelling. With an impressive array of instrumentation, Masters of the Hemisphere etch a jubilant, coherent and catchy pop record - one that I couldn't get out of my car all summer long. Apples In Stereo aim for this kind of psychedelic 60's pop sound, but come off sounding stilted and emotionally under-invested. In stark contrast to the Elephant 6 collective, so much care went into making this record, with shocking sincerity and lack of artifice, that you can't help but embrace the tale of Freemdoom the evil dog.
It's the Music that Matters.......2000-08-20
Concept albums can get really bogged down by over-reaching narratives. And if you try to follow the cartoon storyline for the new MotH CD, you'll probably get stuck or lost, even with a 2-page libretto, a 24-page B&W comic book and expressive song titles. Suffice it to say, the real focus is the music, which has an endearing 60s vibe rich with harmony singing and low-fi arrangements. The songs are infectious and catchy, and spin smoothly alongside anything by the Vaselines, the Pastels and most of the Elephant 6 brood. A bit strange, but a nice break from the mainstream.
Delightfully Bizarre Lyrics - Great Music.......2000-08-18
This is a strange experience. If you didn't have the comic book that comes with the CD, you'd swear these MF's were some kind of freethinking anarchists. Since you do have the comic book, this is a really great (and weird) concept CD. The tunes are simple and catchy, they even break into a Beach Boys harmony mid-album. Probably the best combination comic book/CD I'll buy this year.
A beautiful pop-opera in the Elephant 6 vein........2000-06-24
All of the songs on this CD follow the storyline of the accompanying comic book. The comic book is endearingly simple and straightforward, and the music is a fine companion to it- an excellent record, rife with superb harmonies and warm instrumentation.
