The degree to which you'll like The Captain & the Kid is going to depend on your personal history with Sir Elton John. If you're a resolute follower who was once reduced to a quivering mass of humility by "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and then revived by the blast of pop liberation that was "Philadelphia Freedom" (a single that later appeared on the CD version of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, the album to which this disc is a sequel) you'll have enough invested to appreciate the concept. If, on the other hand, you're a late arrival to the Rocket Man's repertoire, you'll have to adjust your expectations. Kid, unlike more recent efforts, isn't aiming itself at the lite-FM listening masses. What it's asking instead is that you return yourself to your 1970s-era childhood bedroom, flop on the bed, and lock the door, or at least fasten an elastic band around your MTV-addled attention span. This is total-immersion music, and it's got 30 years worth of stories to tell.
The Captain and the Kid are John and Bernie Taupin, his longtime songwriting partner. The music, a choir-enhanced swerve through genres including pop, rock, blues, folk, and country with signature piano riffs thrown in nearly everywhere, chronicles their splintery relationship. Innocence and hope ("Postcards from Richard Nixon") give way to success and joy ("Just Like Noah's Ark"), which eventually leads to discontent ("Tinderbox") and disaster ("And the House Fell Down"). A shot at redemption ("The Bridge") later finds the Captain; reflection ("Old 67") and a joyous reunion (the title track) follow.
Theirs is ultimately a simple story, but John and Taupin suffuse it with hypnotic sentimentality--along with the narrative, echoes of past hits wander into several classic-sounding tracks. "Tiny Dancer" darts through the cracked-voice beauty of "Blues Never Fade Away" and "The Bridge," for example, while "Wouldn't HaveYou Any Other Way (NYC)" works in hints at both "Candle in the Wind" and "Where to Now St. Peter." Other songs shake loose less likely influences ("I Must Have Lost it on the Wind" sounds like something off a vintage Linda Ronstadt album), but all are compellingly steeped in context; if you don't get the late-disc reference to fine silk suits and six-inch heels, you'll wish you did. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description
The Captain & The Kid, written with his long-time writing partner, Bernie Taupin. More than 30 years after the release of their landmark #1 multi-platinum album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, the duo returns with this sequel. The new album features 10 new songs reflecting the intimate lives and public times spanning the long-standing songwriting partnership of Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin. In fact, for the first time, both John and Taupin are featured on an Elton John album cover.
"The album is a celebration of our lives and our lifetimes, of our music and of the music we love. The Captain & The Kid continues our story. You can't look back, we're looking ahead," says John.
Created in the tradition of those fantastic records of the 60's and 70's, The Captain & The Kid is a celebration of when music was the most important voice of our culture and the album was its prime vehicle. Much like Elton's previous records Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, and Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy, The Captain & The Kid is an album meant to transport you back to that place in time when music mattered most. 35 plus years-later, Elton really has become Captain Fantastic and Bernie is most definitely The Brown Dirt Cowboy and they are as passionate about their music as they have ever been.
"I find the whole album to be so touching and beautiful for me because I've lived it," Elton added. "I lived it with Bernie and we've come through it. We've gone over the bridge and here we are at the other side."
The first single from the album, 'The Bridge" is one of 10 tracks which picks up where Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy left off. The album tells the story of Elton and Bernie from when they arrived in Los Angeles 30 years ago, through the ups and downs of their lives, to present day.
Customer Reviews:
This Music Rocks! Elton & Bernie have done it again!.......2007-07-24
Since I frist out this album in the cd player. I just can't stop listening to it. As a Hardcore fan of Elton's this album is easily one of his best.It is equal to Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy. There wasn't a song on the cd that I did not like. Great classic Elton John Cool! Thanks Elton And Bernie for all the wonderful years of great music! If you like this cd make sure you go back and get the early music too. Especially Captain Fantastic because you cannot own one without the other.
The Old Man still has a lot of rockin left in the tank. .......2007-07-08
This is by far Elton's greatest album since Blue Moves. I came into this CD hoping it could withstand the test of time, which it did and then some. It took 30 years for the sequel to Capt. Fantastic and it was worth the wait. For a 60 year old, this dude rolled out rocker after rocker, his voice has never been better. I hope Bernie Taupin can keep Elton on this path for a little while before he does call it a career. The ballads and soft tunes just isnt his style. Rock and roll and mixing it with a slice of R&B is what made Elton who he is. Go buy this incredible album, you will not regret it one bit.
Hits Versus Albums.......2007-05-16
I have always been a classic Elton John fan. I've loved all of his biggest hits, but had never bought any albums other than his greatest hits. That changed when "Songs From The West Coast" was released. That album blew me away. I actually listen to that album now more than I do his greatest hits. While I did like his next album, "Peachtree Road", it didn't strike me the same way. I just picked up "Captain & The Kid" today, and was thrilled that it seemed to gel so well with "Songs From The West Coast". If you've considered yourself a mainly hits type of fan, I recommend that you pick up these two albums. Thanks Elton!
As far as I'm concerned..........2007-04-03
This highly personal recording hits it out of the park as far as I'm concerned. I mean, you've got some pretentious so-and-sos with the gall to try to tell Bernie and Sir Elton what kind of songs they should be writing. It's as if I'm hearing that unless these guys crank out an album of hard rock tunes, they may as well not bother. What gall.
These guys have taken the last 40 years of their lives and put it into song for us to try to understand where it is they've been all this time, and why after all that time they're still around. This is a gift! Is this something worth writing about? Damn skippy. It's about their lives, it's about two young British kids having to deal with the crazy phenomenon that became Elton John starting from their arrival in Los Angeles during the Nixon era; it's about the ensuing tensions that nearly tore them apart; it's about the deceitfulness of the recording industry and the constant hoops they had to jump through to keep the labels happy; it's about wondering why some they knew and loved didn't make it, and how it was they did so. By the end of this musical, they can sit on the porch, look back at 1967 with actual fondness, and drink a toast to being older - having survived through it all!
And they tell this story so..well, I don't have the words; it's moving at times, humorous at times, and as usual Elton takes Bernie's words and turns them into art. Imagine Bob Dylan trying to tell this story and then imagine me jumping out the window! It's Sir Elton's voice, thank God, and the story is told with his magical piano in a way only Elton John can tell it. He lived it, after all! These songs would be no good in someone else's catalog, as far as I'm concerned. I had the chance to watch a video where Sir Elton and and the elusive Taupin explain what's behind these songs. But, even without the documentary, it's all right there in the booklet.
I'm glad that the tone of the heavier subjects was lightened some by Elton's genius; I have only to think of "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and how glad I was when it came out on CD so that I could skip that suicide-inducing track altogether! For "The Captain and The Kid", it's different! Who knew a song about a drug-induced stupor could be such fun to sing along with? He's brilliant like Randy Newman that way: able to take horrible subject matter and making singable melodies with them. "Just Like Noah's Ark" is great; analagous to "Tower of Babel", smarminess is dealt with in a toe-tapping style, and Sir Elton and David's dog Arthur adds a little comedy to the mix. Then you have a song like "The Bridge", it's absolutely ethereal, Elton's voice raw with emotion, just beautiful.
The past is gone, Elton and Bernie know it, and the rest of us would do well to grow up and accept it as well. These aren't the hit songs from a couple of robotic crank-out artists, as sung about in "Bitter Fingers". These songs are from the heart and soul, and as such they may never get airplay. So what?! I would love to hear another heavily-orchestrated Elton John album, like the one that made me fall in love with him as a twelve-year-old, but that doesn't mean this album doesn't have merit, as far as I'm concerned. If I need to hear that style, "Made In England" is perfect. The "Captain and The Kid" works, as is, in its own way. "You can't go back, if you try it fails." Amen to that. All we've got is now, today, and I love Sir Elton's older, wiser voice. As far as I'm concerned, the story of Elton and Bernie is one worth telling, I'm glad they shared this very personal story with us, the CD their story has produced is listenable and brilliant, and whether or not it can be danced to it is, in the end, of very little importance.
Elton and Bernie, I appreciate your gift to me, and I thank you.
elton's best in 31 years........2007-03-20
let's welcome elton back to making excellent albums. it's been awhile. this highly autobiographical set of songs by elton and pal bernie is a sequel of sorts to the last excellent album he made (1975's "captain fantastic & the brown dirt cowboy). this is no "tumbleweed connection," the 1971 masterpiece which is easily the best thing elton has ever done, but it's a very fine piece of work, indeed. particularly wonderful here is elton's strongest singing in many a moon. what a voice! can't deny that. and the songs are all very good. "just like noah's ark," is an especially fine hard rock number that can stand up to the current work of any of his peers. i picked up this disc because i saw that mojo magazine picked it as the 33rd best album of 2006, and Q magazine picked it as the 28th. very glad i got the thing. i recommend it to you, too.

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to Elton's career.......2007-07-28
This was my first Elton John CD. I only knew him by songs from 80's and 90's. Some of them are good, but the real gems from Elton are his 70's songs. Here you get a glimpse of the brilliant songwriting by the Taupin/ John team.
Not included in these two CDs are many brilliant songs from the 70's, too many to mention, but a couple come to mind, like "Levon", "Tiny Dancer" (re-introduced to new generations by its inclusion in the excellente film Almost Famous), Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters (maybe my favourite song by Elton John), Tonight, and many many more.
As I said, it's a great introduction to Elton John's world of great songs, but you need to listen to all of his 70's stuff, it's just great.
His Songs.......2007-01-26
With the music industry going on today, we see a lot of artists really sounding like they are all more manufactured based on the image, rather the the authentic feeling of the music itself. That is why so many acts from the 70's and 80's have all been considered as a total memory. That recently has been the case with Elton John as well. Although he has made some excellent records these past several years, many have disregarded his as a throwback to the past, in favor of wannabe manufactured acts like Usher, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Still, his music is much more solid today, than those acts who are popular, and this hits record does try to show it.
The Very Best Of Elton John is a 1990 double album that tries to be definitive in showing Elton's best songs throughout the 80's and 70's. The collection does handle very well compared to other greatest hits records that were released recently. The songs here have been compiled well and include a lot of his best songs from Your Song to Sacrifice, and mostly everything in between. The album also includes other greats like Tiny Dancer, Blue Eyes, Kiss The Bride, Nikita, and Don't Go breakin' My Heart with Kiki Dee. Although the album does handle well, there are still a lot of good songs that were sadly overshadowed from Elton on this collection. The record overlooks great songs like Empty Garden, Little Jeannie, and Take Me To The Pilot to name a few, which leaves some die hard fans feeling that more could've been added.
While some new fans might consider a better hits record from Elton John like the Greatest Hits 1970-2002 because it is a bit cheaper in price, this double record still is a better reflection of his music at the time it was released. If you are a die hard fan of Elton John, than this is still a decent greatest hits package. The Very Best Of Elton John is a great buy, and I suggest this one for any album collection.

GREATEST HITS 1970 - 1990.......2006-02-28
DIGITALLY REMASTERED, PRINTED LYRICS, COMPLETE VERSIONS, ONE "NEW" SONG: "YOU GOTTA LOVE SOMEONE", HERE ARE ALL OF THE MOST POPULAR HITS OF ELTON JOHN IN THAT PERIOD, IT'S LIKE GREATEST HITS VOLS. I & II, PLUS SOME MORE, THIS WITH GREATEST HITS VOL.III WILL BE JUST FINE, ALL THE BEST FROM THE FIRST 20 YEARS.
Astounding! So Much Good Elton John!.......2005-08-04
Too bad this album is an import, I got it at a regular music store for half of what it is being sold for here. Aside from that, I think if you like Elton John but don't want to wade through all of his material to find his most memorable songs and biggest hits, look no further, X marks the spot, you have found the treasure. Shop around first to see if you can get it for cheaper. If not, you may want to consider getting it here.
Brilliant compilation of his music to 1990.......2004-09-14
Surely, Elton needs no introduction, as he was hugely popular around the world. During the period covered by this compilation, he only had two number one hits in Britain although he had several in America during the same period. Since then, he has had at least four further UK number one hits. So while many people consider the seventies and eighties to be Elton's golden years, he has demonstrated that he is not finished yet.
Even in 1990, Elton had too many great songs to fit on a double CD, the most notable omissions from this one being Tiny dancer, Island girl and Little Jeannie. His more recent compilation covering his career up to 2002 was issued with slightly different track listins in the UK and USA included some of these songs (which ones depend on the edition) but several other tracks were omitted to make way for them and the more recent songs. Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Pinball wizard, Part time love and Passengers are among the songs on this compilation that are omitted from both editions of the 2002 compilation.
You probably have your own particular favorite Elton songs. Of those included here, my favorites in no particular order are Your song, Candle in the wind, Crocodile rock, I'm still standing, Part time love, Sad songs and his duet with the vastly under-rated Kiki Dee, Don't go breaking my heart. The song that really confuses me is Passengers. I've never actually figured out what the song is about. Still, it's not the only such song (another is Whiter shade of pale, the sixties classic).
If you enjoy Elton's music but you're not interested in his more recent music, you may consider buying this compilation instead.
I should add that I had no problem with this set, so the reviewer who had a defective copy must have been unlucky.

Cello Music.......2007-03-09
I had better expectations from this cd, but on the whole the music is great. Julian Lloyd Webber is a great cello player and the arrangements are very good. and is worth the money as it is a double album

A GREAT VOICE AND 12 WONDERFUL SONGS!.......2006-08-06
Some weeks ago I red that John Oates was working on new songs with Geoff Byrd.I thought:"Who is this new artist?".
Thanks to Internet in a few minutes I knew that he was a singer/songwriter with three cds already released and that he used to open Hall & Oates concerts.
I bought on line is last cd,without listen to one note before. One week ago I received the cd and I began to listen to his songs and I discovered a new and original artist!
His voice is one of the best I heard in many years (my favorite singers are Daryl Hall ,Smokey Robinson and Michael McDonald!)and the cd is one of the best from the time of New Radicals(or Gregg Alexander!)cd,becouse it's fresh and new ,but has its roots deep in the best american music of last fourthy years!
If you like Motown, Rock'n Soul and other good music you'll love this album!
Amazing Performer & Album.......2006-04-22
My wife and I saw Geoff Byrd open for Hall & Oates in Washington D.C. a few weeks back. He came onstage solo, armed only with an acoustic guitar, and blew everyone away. He is a singing and songwriting talent and this album is amazing from start to finish. This album only gets better with each playing as layer after layer is revealed...first, you notice the catchy melodies, then you appreciate the incredible vocal talent of Byrd, and then the great lyrics.
Do yourself a favor...grab this album and appreciate an artist who is the real deal and on his way up.
This is a no-brainer!!
Great Singer - Great CD.......2006-04-08
I accidently stumbled over Geoff Byrds music a couple of months ago. I soon realised that this is what should be playing on the radio instead of the over the top produced pop without any soul.
Don't be intimiated by the crappy cover with the somewhat cheesy picture of Mr Byrd, this guy IS for real.
There is not a single song on this CD that is not worth listening to. That's whats incredible! I am usually glad if I can find a pop singer that has two or three songs on a CD that I like never mind a whole CD!
These are the best tracks imho:
*Silver Plated
*Before Kings
*Elusive Butterfly
*I Will Be There
If you, like me, like talent seen in the likes of Gavin DeGraw and Andrew Strong then this should be next on your list.
(Sorry for the spelling above - I'm from Sweden. But I'm guessing my English is better than your Swedish.)
A nice surprise.......2005-12-22
Every so often I venture out and buy a cd from an artist that I have never heard of just to add a little of variety into my playlist. I came accross Geoff byrd's cd and thought that not only was he a cutie but there was something interesting about the song titles. Reluctant to buy the cd just on the basis of his aesthetic appeal I listened to "plasti-queens" and "before kings" after which I became immediately hooked.
Geoff Byrds voice is crisp and clear. He also has a respectable vocal range that he uses to full capacity which is not something that very many artists do these days. I also have to mention that I love his use of instrumentation to support the songs' melody. Everything just seems to fit well on this cd.
Without a doubt I think Shrinking Violets is a great cd to own. I find myself leaving the entire cd on the replay and with the exception of one song, "That's how it goes", everything else is truly fun and catchy.
GOTTA GET THIS CD.......2005-11-22
I kind of found Geoff's music by accident but man what an incredible find!!! His lyrics are lilting and ethereal and deep and the music goes deep into your soul yet it is all very thought provoking and uplifting!!!! IT feels so good to listen it to!! It makes me HAPPY!!!
I saw him perform live and he is a funny, humble, talented guy who definately shows he has a heart of gold. I highly recommend this CD and definately if you ever get a chance to see him live.. it makes you love his music even MORE!!!
Can't wait for the next CD!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great diverse mix!.......2005-12-07
If you find this for sale somewhere, buy it! I found it for a dollar so I took a chance, not recognizing some of the songs, but this is a true little gem of a cd. Fans of the movie Hackers will appreciate "Connected" which is a hard to locate track without paying full price for a Stereo Mc's cd, which I am not that big of a fan. It is worth it to get that song alone. The tempo is a little offbeat, like segueing from Babba O'Riley to There She Goes, but that blends nicely into Maggie May. Then it takes a quirky turn to Our House, and then does a 180 back to Tiny Dancer. This flows nicely into Tempted though, and it flows well enough into As Tears Go By - though I have never been a Marianne Faithful fan. This is probably the only song I could do without - too slow. Cities in the Dust is next (another odd following) then She Came In Through the Bathroom Window, a great Cocker rendition. Then it flows into Black SAteel, which seems like it would have gone better next to Cities of Dust, but whatever. Then comes Wild World, Sunflower, and Solisbury Hill, which all flow well. Then it takes a party tempo with Connected, and ends very strong with Bloddy Well Right and Baby I Love Your Way. It's kind of like listening to a radio station that isn't boxed in by a single format, so I actually rather enjoy it. All the songs are great actually. I only harped on the Marianne Faithful song because its placement messes up my dancing when I am cleaning/working to this CD. It really is a treasure, a priceless little jam colleciton that I highly recommend. Go for it!
