URB PRESENTS A COLLECTION OF ELECTRONIC + HIP HOP ARTISTS FROM SYSTEM RECORDINGS & DEFINITVE JUX JOINING FORCES TO RAISE VOTER AWARENESS
Who's America?, a collaborative compilation born of some of electronic music and hip hop's finest coming together to raise civic awareness and draw attention to the upcoming Presidential Election, perhaps the most important one in decades. System and Definitive Jux have contributed exclusive new tracks in addition to some well known classics, in the attempt to highlight the powerful platform our culture and community can be when brought into sharp focus and how ownership of the principals that support this nation leads directly to the ownership of power itself. Who's America? is meant to inform, encourage and challenge a demographic made apathetic by manipulative and self-serving powers that be. Worse, this apathy is rapidly giving way to antipathy amongst those who feel their views are not considered nor their voices heard, and that their government acts not as an extension of the peoples will, but by an agenda all its own.
This is completely against the principles behind the founding of this country and the great documents that outline and define in whose hands ultimate power is supposed to rest. Representative democracy is dependent upon participation by the people and by helping to bring citizens into the political discourse with the force of precious ideas behind them, we can help change the course of our nation for the positive. Given the times we live in today, few things could be more important. Together, URB, System and Def Jux are doing their small part. Who's America? We're America. Our America. Stand up. Join in.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Modest Mouse started sounding like a real band. For the longest time, singer-songwriter Isaac Brock seemed to exist solely to defy the established rules, forging forward on sheer momentum and ingenuity. Even Pavement looked relatively ordinary in comparison to the band's early releases like 1996's This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. But on Good News for People Who Love Bad News, the frontman sounds like he's finally touching the earth, and the band--minus founding member and drummer Jeremiah Green--follows suit. A relaxed mood prevails, not so much in volume but in attitude. On the follow-up to the group's 2000 major label debut, The Moon & Antarctica, big sloppy melodies battle it out with brass on punky epics like "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty." The lyrics are simpler, the arrangements tamer, but the vitality remains. The prevailing mood is that Modest Mouse has pulled off something extraordinary here: a well-rounded, lovable record that doesn't sound anything like David Gray. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
One hit song does not a sell-out album/band make.......2007-06-20
Yes, "Float On" was a smash hit. Yes, it's pretty poppy. But what about "3rd Planet" and "Gravity Rides Everything" from "The Moon and Antarctica"? To a (possibly much) lesser extent, what about "Heart Cooks Brain" from "TLCW" or "Dramamine" from "This is a Long Drive"? You see, MM have generally had more "mainstream-palatable" songs on their album, and just because this one was a hit, does not mean they sold out.
OK, you've heard that rant before, but not in such an *ahem* eloquent fashion. Now onto the review.
As usual, the hit is by no means the best song on the album. Other songs like "The World At Large", "Ocean Breathes Salty", "Bury Me With It", "Bukowski", "The View", and (ESPECIALLY) "The Good Times are Killing Me" (which, by the way, if you did not know, was remixed and tampered with by one of the best bands of all time, the Flaming Lips) not only give "Float On" a run for its money, they take the money and use it to buy cigars.
I mean, the fact that supposedly hardcore fans are nitpicking this great album because it has freakin' "Float On" on it more points out their own stupidity and narrow-mindedness than it does the band being sell outs.
So, in conclusion, if you want to keep your rather dubious "indie cred", do not buy this album. If you enjoy Modest Mouse as much as anyone should, however, than do.
"You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?".......2007-04-19
I am becoming more and more of a fan of this kind of off-beat, different music. I guess I can't help myself. I liked the single "Float On" when I heard it a few years ago, but again, I didn't pursue the album until later. Good News is interesting because of its contrasting moods. The plucky guitars and catchy harmonies conflict with the cynical lyrics that attack religion and certain kinds of people. The vocals range from pleasant sounds in the background to aggressive, near shouting tirades. The singer isn't all that great at singing, but he's great at using his voice to convey any mood he wants.
"The World At Large" starts off the album about as happy as it gets, with flutes and meaningless vocals in the background. "Bury Me With It" is about as angry as the band gets musically, though not lyrically. That would be "Bukowski", which is completely pleasant musically. "The View" sounds like kind of like dance music. "Satin In a Coffin" uses prominent drums and older sounding instruments to create a very interesting sound. "The Good Times Are Killing Me" finishes off the album while perfectly illustrating the conflict of sound and message, and it's produced by The Flaming Lips, which is cool. Modest Mouse is a unique band, and a good one at that.
I can't believe I heard this on the radio........2007-03-27
The first time "Float On" came across the radio I almost $#!? my pants. I fell in love with Modest Mouse after I heard "Dramamine". Not immediately, but after listening to the "Long Drive" record repeatedly, the band grew on me. And grew. And grew. Now 8 or 9 CD's later they're still growing on me. I'm glad they've found radio success and hope they are able to keep producing new music.
My highlights for this record include Bukowski, Black Cadillacs, and Satin In A Coffin. If you truly love the band and aren't just in it for the image, you'll love this record. The whole album is great. Yes, even Float On.
Even if you're an old school MM fan, listen to it with an open mind.......2007-03-12
This album is the worst Modest Mouse album, in my opinion, but it's still really great. That's the beauty of Modest Mouse.
What I love about Isaac Brock is that his music reveals a lot about who he is and what life has taught him. Good News for People Who Love Bad News is no exception.
The only track I don't like on this album is "Satin in a Coffin". After hearing a live recording, which I love, I can't stand to listen to the one on gnfpwlbn. It lacks passion and intensity.
Yet another masterpiece from Modest Mouse.......2007-01-21
These guys have released so many great albums that the expectations are always incredibly high for their next one. And every time they release one, I listen to it, and I'm a bit disappointed, and I say to myself, "it's good, but it's not as great as the last ones."
Then I listen to it more, and it begins to grow on me, and soon I can't stop listening to it and I'm raving, "This is their greatest album!".
That's what happened to me with this one. Didn't blow me away at first. Now? I am like an addict. As soon as a song ends I need to hear it again immediately. And I can't stop listening to the album, and I don't want to listen to anything else....
I give it huge props, even though they diss my beloved Charles Bukowski.

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s.
But by the time of Hootenanny's "Color Me Impressed" and "Within Your Reach," something magical was clearly happening within Westerberg's songwriting and the band at large, even if it was largely inspired by terminal boredom, perpetual discontent, no small amount of alcohol--and an indifference to success that was one of their greatest charms. Within two years they'd produce one of the decade's--and perhaps rock history's--most compelling albums with Let It Be and the indie movement's first grassroots anthem in "Unsatisfied." They followed it up with Tim, a collection where Westerberg seemed able to conjure similar generational marching orders ("Here Comes a Regular," "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial") with preternatural ease; enraptured rock critics probably thought harder about his music than he ever did. Though highlighted by such gems as "Alex Chilton," "Skyway" and such pop-smart swan songs as "I'll Be You" and "Merry Go Round," the Mats' third act dissolved into the expected, if equally star-crossed solo career for Westerberg and the tragic death of Bob Stinson, events which can't help but cast a melancholy shadow over the unexpectedly gritty new old stock recordings "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The ragged and glorious alt-rock of The Replacements made them one of the greatest and most iconic American bands of the 1980s, and inspired countless groups to come. Fronted by lead singer, pianist/guitarist, and principal songwriter Paul Westerberg, these heroes of post-punk/pre-grunge rock `n' roll fused garage band greatness with powerful pop beauty. Fueled by both thrashing energy and a lyrical and emotive sonic flow, The Replacements' kamikaze live shows and richly textured albums made them music legends.
Customer Reviews:
Love from Minneapolis.......2007-03-25
How can anyone who lives in the muck of a society that prizes commerce, populism, media savvy, and dumbed-down entertainment above all else be surprised how little popular success or money or fame the Replacements achieved in their career? But our same American culture of mass-produced cr*p-by-committee fertilized their existence, out of which sprang this wondrous musical art, an art that is nevertheless woefully underrepresented in this single CD.
Not to bleat too much, but how does Rhino justify the omission of Androgynous and Swingin' Party, which, in all of their weird, surreal, organic, raw, sloppy beauty, epitomized the immediacy that helped make Let It Be and Tim the greatest back-to-back albums by any artist in the 1980s? These songs only get better with repeated listening, unlike the Mats' pre-Let It Be punk efforts that sound like the kind of speed metal that gives skateboarding fanboys hard-ons but grows increasingly tiresome with age.
It is funny to me that as their music matured and became more melodic and interesting, many of these same fanboys accused the Mats of selling out. That instinct to keep bands stuck in perpetual adolescence always drags down great music, but thankfully, Westerberg and Co. resisted, although at the unfortunate loss of a bandmate.
Despite missing some vital tunes, I still give this album five stars for Rhino's good sense to include Answering Machine and Here Comes a Regular, and because it is still the Replacements, who even at their worst could puke out better music than the soulless, high-polish, overproduced dreck that wins Grammy awards. If there is any justice, the Mats will be fast-tracked into the RnR Hall, thus affording them the opportunity to give the middle finger to industry tastemakers who overlooked them in their prime.
What, yet another Mats compilation album?.......2007-01-16
Yeah, Yeah, this has the Twin Tone recordings that All For Nothing did not have. Sure, that makes this a better compilation of hits (what hits?) album. However, where All For Nothing had a disc of rairities, this one hopes to entice Mats fans with two new recordings. Uhh, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Paul released like four (at least) solo albums since leaving the Mats (one could argue that the last Mats album was a Paul solo album)? I guess, Paul's solo works are different when he attaches the Mats name to it? So, uhhh, why exactly should you buy this CD? Well, if you are a fan and already have all of their stuff, there is no reason to buy this CD. I mean, come on. Chris was so indifferent about this project that he did not even bother playing drums on the two new cuts and Bob is dead. What, did you really miss hearing Tommy's bass-playing that much? Listen to some GnR for crying out loud. LOL
A Great Best-of.......2007-01-11
I'm going to keep this short and sweet: The Replacements are a "glorious footnote" in the history of rock music, a band that didn't sell enough to make an impact when they were together (at least on the superficial charts of the Eighties), but I guarentee every indie band that followed had a record or two and practiced "Can't Hardly Wait" or "Kiss Me on The Bus" to learn their instruments.
So if you're wondering what all the fuss is about, pick up this disc. I owned Hootenanny for a while back in the day, but foolishly let it slip out of my hands. So when I saw this disc, I had to get it. You can't understand alternative rock without the Replacements, REM, Joy Division, and Mission of Burma.
Do yourself a favor and get this, you won't regret it.
One Historic CD.......2006-12-19
For a compilation, this CD is awesome. It follows the Replacements from their punk rock roots to their more polished sound (lyrics and music). One of the best aspects of the Replacements was their refusal to apologize for not being famous rock stars. Sure, the critics loved them, and LET IT BE is on many top spots of top rock and roll albums of all time (as well it should be). Still, they never found the ultra-glamorous rock star lifestyle that so many seek. And their music is better for it.
The best way to listen to this is on a long, autumn drive on backroads, with the windows down and the volume loud. If you still have one of those archaic tape recorders, record a compilation tape and throw in some greats from this album. It only gets better with age.
And to address my own review title, I wish this had been two CDs. Or three.
Great one disc Best of, Excellent with 2 new songs, but so short........2006-12-05
This ablum is the cream of the Replacements catalog, but its hard not to want all of their music on this. It does not hit their twintone years, which I am suprised has not been done yet (the did it for soul asylum). But, this covers their sire years well, and is greatly complimented by the best of Paul Westerberg CD. A good starter CD, but also check out the "all for nothing/nothing for all" greatest hits released years ago, 2 cds of music with the second disc being B sides and rare recordings. You'll want all the replacements Albums after you get this one anyway, their addicting.

Horrid! Dave Mustaine destroyed his own greatness..........2007-07-25
The incredible classic speedmetal opus "Peace Sells...", here re-mixed by Dave Mustaine, has been completely trashed -- vocals horrible, transitions to leads awkward and ungainly, rhythm tracks bastardized -- why did he do it? It was perfect as it stood. Anything "re-mixed" should carry warning bells and a red flag; I got fooled once by Iggy Pop's destruction of the also-classic "Raw Power," now I can't find a copy of the *real* original (produced by Bowie). These rock divas need to get a grip and stop erasing history, I don't know at all what their deal is, but it is not a good one.
5 Stars to the original, The Remaster doesnt sound right though.......2007-07-24
"Peace Sells" happening to be my second favorite Megadeth album (Rust in Peace gets #1) and the only reason that I am writing this is to comment on the remastered version. Something just doesnt sound right. It seems like the songs were played around with to much. Its almost like it was re-recorded. When I go back to my copy on cassette, even though the sound is horrid, the songs seem to sound better when they are less polished. Sometimes lousy production does an album justice. I love remastered versions of most albums, but I only like it when they get more volume and a crisper sound with less hiss. When things are played with to much (such as Ozzy's horrid remasters of him re-recording certain parts w/ different musicans, or the remasters of Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon, which they ruined, but hey that sounds best on record.) Maybe its just me, but I would love to hear other comments from other Megadeth fans that own the orginal and see if it is just me. "Killing is my Business" seems to have the same problem, but besides the remastering problem, its still one of their best!
Asking for Peace?.......2007-07-11
After a great debut album "Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!", Dave Mustaine and his band makes even better album. "The Conjuring", "Devil's island", "Good Mourning/Black Friday", "Bad Omen", and "My Last Words" are all great tracks about the danger of satanism. When Dave sings "I've Got Your Soul, I've Got Your Soul"...I think it is the most rudest and toughest sentence even sung... "Wake Up Dead" is a killer starter...there's no much lyrics but the guitar riffs are so excellent that they could kill all the false metal that exists in the world. Beware, Axl, Megadeth is coming... "I ain't Superstitious" (made by Willie Dixon) is the only track in this album that doesn't rock so much...it's like a track from 60's. "Peace Sells" is a killer track...fine "What Do You Mean 'I Don't Believe in God.' I Talk to Him Everyday..."
Stars: The Conjuring, Peace Sells, Wake Up Dead, Devils Island, Bad Omen
Great album but I can't give it 5 stars..........2007-05-17
because let's be honest, Mustaine's vocals on here are not perfect. Yes, I know back then, the technology they were using wasn't the best but I cannot fully give an album 5 stars if the vocals aren't good. Besides that though, the musicianship and the songwriting is good. I guess my only complaint which doesn't add to whether I like it or not are the bonus tracks. What's the friggin' point? They are essentially the same track except are worse? I would rather just have the original songs or if you're going to put bonus songs on the CD, put b-sides or live versions, not worthless remixes.
A+.......2007-04-20
I'm at work with nothing much to do so I'm writing reviews to kill time. It's on my iPod at the moment, therefore, I'll write about these 8 tracks.
I love these tracks to Deth. Rust in Peace I would say is their pinnacle along with Countdown to Extinction. I'm an easy listener, which means I listen to everything (Rock, Rap, Pop, ANYTHING). I would recommend this music to people who like Megadeth obviously. If you're new to it, you may not like Mustaine's voice, right off the bat at least. Give it time, i remember when I was even picky with music I still stuck with this album. That says a lot right there.

A bit sad, but absolutely beautiful.......2007-06-09
Nancy Wilson puts such emotion into this music it's almost as if she's been there, done that. She has other recordings of the title song, "Guess Who I Saw Today" but this is the one that pulls on your heart and makes you dread hearing the sadness of that last line. Nancy Wilson is a gem and you can feel her brilliance in this album.

I heard the title song 'Guess Who I Saw Today'like fifteen years ago and remembered being totally blown away by the song-but then being a young twenty year old couldn't get myself to actually go and purchase a Nancy Wilson CD. How un-cool. But the song haunted me and recently I decided to give this CD a try...I'm SO glad I did. Nancy Wilson is a class act who has produced wonderful music. This is the CD to settle back with a nice glass of wine and let you mind flow with the music. This may have been my first Nancy Wilson CD but it certainly will not be my last.

Other than a few forgettable tracks pulled from a Flavor Flav solo record, highlights abound here. The rockin' "Black Is Back" and the horn-heavy "Harder Than You Think" serve heavy helpings of uplift mojo. "Sex, Drugs & Violence" features a chorus of kids and peerless verses from KRS-One. "Long and Whining Road," the album's most moving track, sees Chuck D's lyrics leaning heavily on Bob Dylan song titles and one-off references to U2, Snoop Dogg, Tom Petty, Beastie Boys, and more. Dramatic production touches include the muted metal riff of "Frankenstar" and orchestral flavors like chimes ("Amerikan Gangster") and vibraphone ("Bridge of Pain"). As always, though, the music is the message, and where this album is so musically eclectic as to court identity crisis, in the end the instrumental elasticity only mirrors Chuck D's vast grasp of the continuum of social ills that mainstream hip-hop long since gave up battling in favor of greed, fame, provincialism, or all of the above. So in answer to the indulgent question of this album's title, maybe--just maybe--this is how we do it. --Jason Kirk

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Containing three former members of much-lamented New York buzz band Jonathan Fire Eater, who self-destructed before striking gold, the Walkmen seem determined not to repeat past mistakes. They marked their return with an unassuming self-titled EP and spent a meandering year on the club circuit before properly breaking this, their first full-length album, with a song loaned out to a car commercial. "Sometimes I'm just happy I'm older," sings Hamilton Leithasuer over the rolling, toy piano melody of "We've Been Had." While on the brittle, angular "Revenge Wears No Wristwatch," he whines, "I've heard it all before / I've had it up to here." But for all the dashed expectations and lingering regret, the Walkmen still look unblinkingly forward. The music here is intense and inventive, combining garage rock, cabaret pomp, and carnival melodies, while still sounding oddly tuneful. Fans of U2 and the Cure should investigate the Walkmen. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
an incredibly well done album.......2006-01-06
This album was a great suprise. I bought it only hearing "we've been had" expecting another franz ferdinandish, strokesish sound, instead i found a talented band with a haunting, layered sound. "i'm never bored" and the title song are brilliant. Well done and high recommended.
An organised cacophony, yes.......2006-01-02
The relentless building up of musical tensions in a Walkmen ditty gets the blood humming oh so very nicely... (ah, those drums!).
Until yesterday I did not know the Walkmen existed, but now they're residing on my shelf, next to Bono and the lads, James (the band), Interpol, Morrissey and the Decemberists. I've always had a thing for eclectic music; unpredictable music that, superficially, seems to channel the listener to a dusky area where suicide is not a four-letter word, has always made me incredibly cheerful.
This is good stuff, and not only because these 5 New Yorkers have dragged me from the coma resulting from being exposed to the plaintive mewling of Vashti Bunyan.
Excellent band, excellent album.......2005-02-13
One of the best live shows you will see. This band is awesome. Music, lyrics...everything.
Splendid........2005-01-18
The Walkmen are an amazing band... they are one of the few bands that I prefer in concert as opposed to on a record. Don't get me wrong, though. This album is terrific. It manages to be melancholic but, at the same time, happy as can be. A definite buy for a true indie fan.
Beautiful.......2004-10-31
This album is simply beautiful. Everytime I hear it I catch something new that just blows me away. If you like Galaxie 500, but want something with a little extra "rock", I would recommend this.

As a hard-hitting Afro-beat orchestra that embellishes vintage Fela-style grooves with touches of gritty funk and fiery salsa, Antibalas quickly won over a sizable local audience in New York City with its sweaty live shows and relentlessly danceable rhythms. But while the band's past two efforts sounded fresh amidst a landscape of retro-rock cool, the discs never measured up to the band's galvanizing live show: Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1 was a piecemeal effort of live and studio material; Talkatif was woefully short. Now on Who Is This America, the band constructs a great-sounding 70-minute studio effort where the seven songs are skillfully woven together, not because they all sound like one long Afro-beat song, but because there is imaginative arrangements and tasty musicianship. Here multiple percussion players are the launch pad and the funky horn charts ignite liftoff whether it's the tightly wound "Indictment" or the slowly building "Sister." Undoubtedly the band's finest work to date. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
If only more U.S. pop bands asked the same question...........2007-05-07
Listening to this cd after watching TV for several hours was like a mind cleanser. Great rhythms and beats, very complex, and very funky. The band is absolutely enormous, but tight like a drum. The artwork on the cover and inside is beautiful and subtle. The lyrics are poetic and simple. I do find myself wishing the songs were a bit shorter at times, but other times I appreciate the endurance quality of their lengths. My two year old loves this stuff.
Incredible.......2005-07-13
You can't deny the incredible horn riffs put forth by this album, they're simply amazing. You'll get goosebumps listening to this album for the first time. Although at times some of the songs can become tedious, it is still one of the best jazz albums out there.
long live antibalas.......2004-08-21
let's face it, antibalas can do no wrong. all the way from "liberation..." and "talkatif" to "who is this america?" every album a must have. this album brings political awareness to the forefront along with tight percussion, pulsating horns and thought-provoking lyrics.
but i have to admit, to get the full antibalas experience, i highly recommend going to one of their shows where you can't help but dance until the very end. antibalas deserves respect, not just as musicians, but also as caring citizens of this world who strive to bring issues to the ears of many who are deaf and make this world a more aware and peaceful place to live. with everything going on in the world today, we need more bands like antibalas.
Antibalas- is more than its music.......2004-07-10
After many years of anticipation, I saw Antibalas in NYC. Being from LA- and somewhat distant-at least geogrphically- it was a blissful experience.
Antibalas, has become more entrenched in its political ideology. Unabashedly anti establishment, the album is provactively inducive. Despite the instrumental monotony throughout its albums, Antibalas delivers this time. From the graphics of the CD cover to its lyrics, it indeed questioning of our system. Political Economy, Globalization, Racism, philosophy, history; it is all here. Cant wait to see the Antibalas again in LA.
great recording but you've gotta see them live.......2004-07-08
This band truly dedicates themselves to the feel of the groove. Their live show is full of energy that defies you to remain still....truly something to behold.

After being booted from Metallica in 1983, Dave Mustaine put together his own band Megadeth and two years later released the mediocre Killing Is My Business ... And Business Is Good. At the time, it seemed clear who the real genius in Metallica was, despite Mustaine's claims to the contrary. But a year later, when Megadeth unraveled Peace Sells ... But Who's Buying, Mustaine's boasting took on new relevance. Despite some rather inane lyrics, the disc is one of the most powerful and contagious thrash records of the era. In addition to the propulsive title track, the album features the scorchers "Wake Up Dead," "Black Friday," and "My Last Words." The band would later simplify and commercialize its sound, but here is where it shines darkest. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
Old Megadeth fans beware.......2007-06-12
Mustaine went and pulled a George Lucas on us! These songs sound like they've been re-recorded! Let alone 're-mastered'. This album doesn't sound the same at all anymore - in a really 'less heavy' kinda way...it's completely bizarre and quite an unwelcome surprise. Jeez Mustaine, why you fixin' stuff that ain't broken? I'm tempted to pawn this off man. He ruined his own material.
Peace sells, and more people were buying. 3.5 stars........2007-06-02
More of the same metal musings from the poison pen of Mega main man Mustaine . On this sophomore release Megadeth take their thrash blueprint and add a far better production job to the brew with better songs writing and a bit more mobility to the mix. All of which makes for an improvement in the bans ability to raise their profile.
Musically it's the same crew from the debut locked into their roles. The thrash metal here is once again mostly anonymous filler metal. Yet where the debut only had one to-die-for tune in the form of the title track this album has two such numbers in the guies of the slow burn single Wake Up Dead and the more frenetic Peace Sells. Both, though especially the latter, hvae been embedded into metal folklore. Not to mention the great video for Peace Sells.
Anyway, I still can't justify giving this collection more than three stars due to the general sameness of a bunch of the tunes. And the thrash here hasn't yet morphed into the metal meltdown of Rust in Peace or Countdown to Extinction. Yet the rise of Mustaines machine can probably be said to start here, the first real rumblings towards being part of the 'big 4'.
The 2nd best thrash album ever made. Just pure brutal metal!.......2007-01-16
Wow, what an album! This album is the 2nd best thrash album ever made only behind Megadeth's 1990 classic, Rust In Peace. After Megadeth released their 1984 masterpiece Killing is my business...And business is good, they weren't known as well as their crappy, overrated rival band Cockallica, but that changed in 1986 when Megadeth released arguably their best work in "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?". Dave Mustaine's and Chris Poland's solos reach new heights on this album and are truely amazing! This album features many Megadeth and thrash metal staples. Many in the forms of Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells(the best metal song ever), Good Mourning/Black Friday, Bad Omen, and My Last Words. This is Megadeth's darkest album. This record has 9 songs. Here are my reviews and comments for each song:
1. Wake Up Dead: Can you start off an album any better? You may argue that Megadeth's Holy Wars/The Punishment Due is better, but they're both great. Now on to the song. It starts off with a bang as Mustaine is singing as hard as he possibly can while playing guitar riffs as hard and as brutal as he possibly can. After the singing, Mustaine dishes out a scorchin' shredding solo. After that, the middle riffs come in which I love. In the middle part, Mustaine dishes out another shredding solo that's even faster than the first one while Chris Poland does a excellent shredding jazzy solo to give the song some originality. The tempo changes after that as the drums start speeding up more and Chris does some really nice rhythm guitar work. Dave starts singing again. After that, he dishes out yet another shredding solo that sounds very brutal. Almost slayer like! When that's done, a strong chant of "Wake Up Dead, You Die! And buried, Wake Up Dead, You Die! Wake Up Dead!" end the song. You can say that this is one hell of an opener to start off a classic and legendary album. 12/10
2. The Conjuring: This song is again musically stunning! It starts off with a nice creepy guitar piece by Mustaine. He then starts singing in a really unusual creepy voice which I think works really well. When Dave says "Obey!" the drums kick in to a fast beat for a couple of times. Dave then does a dark and shall I say haunting solo. It may not be one of the fastest solo's on the album but that doesn't take anything away from it. You have to love the sound of the solo and it shows that Dave doesn't have to shred to impress. After the solo, the drums and the song kick into high gear again which is accompanied by some great rhythm guitar work. After Dave says "Don't summon the devil, don't call the priest, if you need the strength, the conjuring, obey," another slow part of the song comes in and sets the standard for the next fast part. This slow section is complex and features a bone crunching riff. It's one of my most favorite riffs of all time. After the slow section, the song speeds up again and features the riff from the previous slow section. This part also features some of my most favorite lyrics in "I am the Devil's advocate a salesman if you will!" and "I've got your soul, I've got your soul." The second one mentioned is, in my opinion, one of the most brutal lines of all time. After about four verses of lyrics, the drums really kick into high gear and Dave does a nice little shredding solo. After that, there's a nice drum roll and Dave says "obey!" to finish the song. A great second track and I think that it's one of the most underrated Megadeth songs in their career. 10/10
3. Peace Sells: Honestly, who has not heard of this song? It's the best metal song of all time in my opinion and is a thrash metal ANTHEM! Seriously, if you're a metal head like me and haven't heard of this song, you need help. This song has the best lyrics of all time for a metal song. This song beats the crap out of Mastrobation of Puppets and Reign In Blood! Now on to the song, what great things about this song haven't already been said. It starts out with the most famous bass line of all time(MTV would always play this bass line at the end of their shows) by Dave Ellefson and yeah not by Cliff Burton(RIP) from the dumb band whose name I won't repeat. After the bass line, drums kick in and Dave does an excellent solo that everybody should know(honestly, who doesn't know it?). Dave then starts singing lines like, "What do you mean I don't believe in god, talk to him everyday." He also sings probably one of the most famous lines of all time in "If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line, but it better work this time." After Dave sings this the first time, Chris Poland does a beautiful shredding solo. Chris basically from here on out fills every line that Mustaine says with a solo. All of his solo fills are short but great. After Dave sings that line, "Itanw, Ibtfil, bibwtt," a second time, Poland and Mustaine trade off four solos beautifully. Two are done by Mustaine and two by Poland. The last solo of these four is a nice shredding solo by Mustaine. Then Dave says "Can you put a price on peace?" The song then starts building up even faster as Dave says Peace Sells a couple of times and Peace Sells...but who's buying a couple of times. When Dave says PS...bwb the fourth time, Chris does a really intense shredding solo with the drums pounding away in the backround. Dave says PS...bwb again with a "no, no, no, no , no" line as Chris does another little great shredding solo. Dave then says PS and Chris Poland does yet another great shredding solo. When Dave says PS for the last time the song comes to an end. I don't think that any heavy metal song will ever top this! This song has 13 SOLOS!! Count them. That's two more than Megadeth's Hangar 18. This here folks is what a THRASH METAL ANTHEM is all about!! 13/10
4. Devils Island: I love this track! It starts out with Dave doing a shredding but haunting solo. After the intro and the solo are done, a little slow part with a bass line by Dave Ellefson comes in. Then Dave starts talking about this hellish island that he's trapped on. He really talks in a weird and fast voice which I actually like unlike some other people. This song kind of sounds like a hair metal song with the "Devils Island!" chants. After 5 long verses of vocals, Dave does an excellent shredding solo that really gets me punped up! After about 1 1/2 more verses of vocals a slow part of the song comes in with some good guitar riffs. After that the song builds up again as Chris Poland dishes out a great shredding solo. Chants of "Devils Island!" end the song. I think that this track might be the most underrated track in Megadeth's line up. It has 3 great fast solos and is a fast song. 10/10
5. Good Mourning/Black Friday: Where in the world do I start with this one?! In my opinion, it's one of the best songs Megadeth has ever done! It's brutal, it's fast, and it's in your face! Oddly enough, it doesn't start out that way. It starts out with Chris Poland doing one of the most beautiful solos I have ever heard. It's not really fast but it's just the melody and the feel that make it so special. I almost cried when I first heard it. Chris might just be the only one to pull this kind of a solo off so beautifully besides Marty Friedman. After the "Good Mourning" line, Chris does another beautiful melodic solo. Then Dave Mustaine does a stunning shredding solo that also has great feel. It's arguably the best solo that he's ever done. After one verse of lyrics about a guy who "doesn't feel so good," a heavy as hell riff comes in and out of no where the song starts building up into the "Black Friday" part. In the beginning of the BF part, Dave does a great, lightning fast solo. After some drum beats, the song builds up even more and Dave starts talking about the guy who "doesn't feel so good" and talks about the rampage that he's going on. The lyrics are, without a doubt, some of the most brutal and violent lyrics I have ever heard of. Here's the first verse of lyrics, "Killer, intruder, homicidal man. If you see me coming run as fast as you can. Blood-thirsty demon who's stalking the street. I hack up my victims like pieces of meat." It doesn't get much more brutal than that folks. The tempo changes after that as Chris brings in an excellent and complex riff that goes on to the next four verses of lyrics. After these four verses of violent lyrics and a murderous "I will cut you down" lyric by Mustaine, Chris does a stunning, shredding, brutal, intense, and in your face solo. When that part comes up, my jaw drops to the floor every time. When that part comes up and happens, we should all be hanging by a blood soaked thread and blood should be coming out of us. That solo is what I call a mind-blowing and climactic moment. After two more verses of lyrics, the ending chants of "It's Black Friday, paint the devil on the wall" come in. The ending is probably the heaviest part of the song not that other parts of the song weren't heavy enough. After those chants, the song ends. This is, in my opinion, the heaviest song on the album. If you want an epic, look no further. This song is probably one of the heaviest and most brutal songs of all time. It is another musical stunner! Legendary! 12/10
6. Bad Omen: I absolutely love this song! The beginning is kind of similar to GM/BF except for it's played on different notes and played a little faster. Let me just say that the intro to this song is very haunting and dark which I love. The guitar work isn't the only reason why I love the beginning of this song, though, I also like how the drums are very creative and the riffs that are played while the drumming is going on are as heavy as hell. This song has the best drumming on the album. All of the guitar work in the intro is done by Poland including a excellent shredding solo at the end of the intro. After that, the song starts building up with some heavy as hell guitar riffs. Dave talks about a black magic ritual that goes bad in this song. After 2 verses of lyrics, Dave does a great, haunting solo. It's slayer like. He does another weird solo when he says "Bloody blasphemy." After that the song pauses and then comes right back in as Dave does one of the most unusual solos that I have ever heard of. It's slayer like again and there's one part of the solo that sounds almost like a distorted piano, weird huh? After that, he does yet another crazy solo! Excellent! After 1 fast verse of vocals, a "no one can save" and "no one can save, one can know" chant ends the song. A great track that is severly underrated by many. 10/10
7. I Ain't Superstitious: Okay here we go. The blues cover that everybody seems to hate. Why? I actually like it a lot! I think that doing this song was a great idea for Megadeth. So they wanted to try something different? So. I thought that this song gave Megadeth the chance to do something different other than thrash metal and it gave Chris Poland the chance to show off his blues/jazz talent. He does a great job at doing that in this song. It also gave Mustaine the opportunity to show off a little humor in his vocals other than the violent and mean side(and yes I like that side too). Dave also does a great job at sounding humorous in this song. Now on to the song. You can call this song a blues metal song since it has a bluesy atmosphere but still features metal riffs. At clocking at under 3 minutes, it's the shortest song on the album but has incredible speed at times. It starts off with a nice bluesy part by Chris and then Dave starts talking in a funny way. After each verse of vocals, a solo fill is done by Chris Poland. He does some beautiful and fast solos in this song. After all the verses and the solo fills, the ending comes in and the song really SPEEDS up! The ending features an excellent shredding solo by Poland. A very overlooked track. I think that Megadeth did an excellent job with this song. It's not dumb like a lot of you people think. 10/10
8. My Last Words: This is another stunning track! In fact, these might be the finest minutes in Dave Mustaine's career on this song, no joke! It starts off with a haunting guitar solo done by Poland. While he's doing that, Dave Ellefson is doing a really distorted and heavy bass part. Chris Poland than shows off the excellent riff that will be featured on this song. The song then gets going and Mustaine starts talking about playing a game of Russian roulette. A love the guitar riffs featured on this song. They are shredding riffs that you can really bang your head to. After the first three verses are done, the ending starts coming on. This whole ending is absolutely mind-blowing! The first part of the ending is Dave's solo. He does a great and fast solo. It's slayer like again and I think that it is one of the most creative and fastest solos of all time. After that, jaw dropping chants of "You, you, next victim, you next to die! You, you, next victim, you, your turn to die!" come in. While Dave is saying this, the drums are pounding away. The song and the album end perfectly with a line of "You die!" A stunning way to end a classic metal album! 12/10
And there you have it, the 2nd best metal album of all time! The only album that beats this stunning classic was Megadeth's magical 1990 classic and landmark metal album, "Rust In Peace." This album is more than a must for any metal head. It beats Mastrobation of Puppets and Reign In Blood by miles. In my opinion, THIS IS the album of 1986! Enough said! Buy it now or you aren't a true metal head. This album smokes!!!
DTS Rocks.......2007-01-10
Why there is not more of these DVD's I don't know. They sound so good you feel like your on stage with the band
Megadeth just keep getting better!!!.......2006-11-17
A lot of people believe that Megadeth is some crappy band to get back at Metallica, wrong. This Audio DVD proves that. This is what Metallica can't do. This album alone is a milestone in the thrash genre (Metallica only has good albums that people talk about, and its always their first few) but making this makes a great album better. I have been collecting up a few of these DVD-A discs and also enjoy the odd SACD, but out of the ones snaped up this is by far the best. I say for anyone that enjoys this album anyway, and has a system that supports DVD-A or a DTS enabled dvd player and amp, buy it, you wont be dissapointed.
Isnt it funny that Metallica were never going to make music videos when they started, but now that Dave has Gigantour and Arsenal of Megadeth is out, they have "pulled the shortest straw" to release a Music Video DVD.
Cheers Dave, and long live Rattlehead!
