Spirit into Sound

Mickey Hart is a rhythm proselytizer. He's been sounding-off from the percussion pulpit since writing his first book, Drumming at the Edge of Magic in 1990. Hart's Planet Drum--the book and the album--set forth an army of percussion acolytes. With Spirit into Sound, Hart has another accompanying book and a gentler music that looks toward the melodic side of percussion. Although there are a few guests, including tabla player Zakir Hussain, Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, and sarangi master Ustad Sultan Khan, it's Mickey Hart and vocalist/percussionist Rebeca Mauleon who dominate the album. They play melodic percussion instruments and/or electronic samples of African balafon, Brazilian berimbau, and steel drums. For a drummer as worldly as Hart, Spirit into Sound is surprisingly naïve in its childlike rhythms. Mauleon's wordless chants make Spirit into Sound sound like a global glossolalia nursery rhyme. This isn't an album for the rhythmatists of Hart's core following, but a more intimate affair. --John Diliberto

Ellen Kushner's award-winning National Public Radio program Sound and Spirit celebrates the contrasts and connections of diverse world cultures, exploring traditions and themes that define the human experience. None transcends the language barriers better than the push and pull of family, especially the birth of a child. This album, a collection of songs from one of Kushner's most requested shows, highlights the rituals of childbirth and the joys and frustrations of baby's first year. From Serbo-Croatian and Nepalese lullabies, to a Navajo chant, to an American song about adoption, and finally a Baka nursery rhyme, these various baby-related meditations are brought to life by such artists as Sweet Honey in the Rock, Sally Rogers, and Woody Guthrie. The artists share the beauty of the miracle of birth, the heroism of women in labor, and the comforting sense of global unity in life's daily struggle. Best of all, they bring succor to that most neglected of nurturers, the exhausted young mother. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Musical families will love this!.......2006-07-04

These songs are fabulous! The music is quite different from any other lullaby cd. My daughter and her son dance through the house singing, "You're my little potato"... I gave it as a gift, and it has been highly appreciated!

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you want!.......2003-02-25

We registered for this CD and received it as a gift and it is really great. It is fun for adult listening as well as for babies and kids. We received several other cds as well, but this is by far the best, if you only get one, this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars I love this :).......2001-09-03

I don't have any kids (yet.. not quite the age). You'd laugh, but I got this CD just for me, and I love it. I feel most like myself when I find bits of my childhood that wander back into my character, and what better way to bring back the wonderous, imaginative attitudes than a bit of sweet music. If there's one thing I miss most about being a child, it's to be sung a lullaby to sleep. A song is one of the greatest ways a person can give the gift of love.

5 out of 5 stars Made for adults as much as for kids!.......2001-04-01

I have a 5-month-old and we both love this CD. Some of the songs are more instantly accessible than others, but after multiple listens I find myself loving all of them. This album is for those who want to expose their children to the sounds of the music and languages of other cultures, for parents who want to explore the universalities of parenthood, and for both parents and kids who just want to listen to fun music that really sticks in your head!

3 out of 5 stars fine cd for one listen.......2000-08-19

i hate it when i get a cd that only has a few songs that i can hear over and over. this is one of those cds. it sounded great from the reviews, and has some good fun, (yes, i like the "little potato" song!) but it isn't one that i would recommend unless you have money to burn. get any putomayo instead.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Album...........2002-08-14

After Mickey Hart's previous effort "Supralingua", Mickey goes back to relaxing, chill out music that takes you to another place with Spirit Into Sound.

The album is much mellower than it's predecessor. Highlights include Amazon Nguni, Shambolaya, Elephant Walk, Hidden Beach, and the Indian-inspired closing track, Indian Night.

Sit back and let Mickey take you to the other side spiritually.

5 out of 5 stars For what its worth..........2000-08-29

...this is my favorite Mickey Hart/Planet Drum recording. The music reflects the sublime and spiritual aspect of music. Much better than his two previous musical efforts, "Mystery Box" and "Supralingua".

My hope is that Mickey will release a few recordings from his latest musical ensemble, the Mickey Hart Band, featuring a guitarist, bassist, percussion players, vocalists, and former Dead-keyboard player, Vince Welnick.

Buy this recording...you will not be disappointed. You may also want to check out a special packaging of this CD with its companion book.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2000-08-16

This Cd is A absolute masterpiece. The sounds invoke a inner spirituality. When I first put this on I instantly felt something no other cd ever made me feel, a deep rooted almost primitive feeling of sound that transforms the mind and soul into the music. Mickey Hart aslo makes a excellent recording here. The sound is the best I ever heard come from a cd. These sounds we are hearing come from all over the world, there is no denying, this is a Matsterpeice. For fans of world music and jazz alike.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited music evokes images of nature.......2000-05-25

I can tell a five-star album from the individual pieces that are on it. Many albums have a song I like really well, but for some of these that is the only one I like. A five-star album will have four or five such songs that I really like. This album is one of these. The spirited drum beats and simple but alluring combination of simple wind instruments, voice, and melodic percussion evokes images of nature, especially rain forest nature, in my mind. In this album Mickey Hart has returned from his excursion into rock music with Mystery Box back to the drum beats that marked Planet Drum and On the Edge. My favorites on the album are Amazon Nguni, Funky Peru, Shambolaya, Nature Talk, Chroma, and Native Sun. Nature talk in particular reminds me of nature talking to me when I hike in the woods. It is an album that I have played several times and I still like it just about as well as the first time I heard the tidbits on Amazon that enticed me to buy the album. It really is a five-star album.

3 out of 5 stars New Age--but better than elevator music.......2000-02-14

I'm really not much of a fan of New Age type stuff. But actually this isn't too bad. It has interesting sound without being boring and repetitious throughout. Definitely worth a chance--at the very least, it's something to listen to at night to get to sleep.

Album Description

The words and music are those of New England composer, George Makredes, whose songs take aim at the meaning of Christmas. New compositions touch upon the varied emotions that invariably emerge each season.

Titled `Christmas Spirit' and featuring The Carolliers™, a wide range of orchestrations gives this CD the feel of a compilation, with each track offering its own individualized yuletide expression.

All of the feelings of Christmas are explored here, from the solemn to the upbeat including big orchestra sounds, choral numbers, solo vocals, done with varied music styles.

Recorded in Boston, produced and arranged by Pericles Kanaris, it celebrates the spirit of Christmas, with images of family, friends, firesides and faith. Christmas Spirit is akin to a singing Christmas card, with fresh new music to cheer, console, and revere that special happening over two millennia ago in Bethlehem, known as Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars A Joy to listen to...Great new songs for Christmas........2002-10-30

The world needed a CD fresh original Christmas Carols & here they are! The Carollier's Christmas Spirit CD introduces a collection of new uplifting and warm carols to celebrate the season and its meaning. I think rekindles a spirit of Christmas that evokes images of family, friends, firesides and faith without a rehash of the same old same old. You might say, it's a singing Christmas card, introducing fresh new music that cheers, cajoles, consoles and reveres that very special happening over two millennia ago in Bethlehem, we call Christmas. Virtually all of the moods of Christmas are expressed musically from solemn to pop to jazz to blues to world and even folk. But the one common thread to them all is that they avoid the commercial aspect of the season and focus on the true Spirit of Christmas.

Some Highlights include:

The first song, titled Christmas Spirit, was created with the image of young children singing in chorus. Following that is Christ The Lord, symbolizing the biblical account of the angels' announcement of Christ's birth.

The message of the third carol, Soon It'll Be Christmas, celebrates family, goodwill and love, with the introspection of Keep Christmas Through The Year coming up thereafter.

Lightheartedness best describes the feeling of December & Christmas and Raise The Tree. Solemnity then follows with the liturgical O Virgin Pure, and Nativity carol.

Christmas Spirit in Greek precedes Ta Kalanda, which you can hear all over Greece during Christmas time.

Completing the CD are the symphonic sounding Rejoice and folk styled, Lord I Believe Please Help My Unbelief
