Alongside apple-cheeked watercolor paintings of infants, the original cover design for the Soothing Sounds series of records bore the charming inscription, "An Infant's Friend in Sound." Composer Harry Warnow was already legendary (as "Raymond Scott") for his whimsical electronic and big-band novelty musics. With this 1962-63 series, Scott turned his astonishing array of invented and modified keyboards and recording techniques toward pure electronic music with an infant-friendly spin. Intended as "aural toys" for the nursery, Soothing Sounds' deceptively simple "tic-tocs" and unthreatening seesaw melodies play on the calming properties of repetition--much like music boxes, Fisher-Price's mobiles, and the comforting "Again!" video mentality of the Teletubbies. Despite endorsement from the Gesell Institute of Child Development, the records sold poorly. But they had a curious afterlife, prefiguring such "adult" descendents as ambient music ("invented" by Brian Eno in 1975) and the mechanical pop-tronic textures of Kraftwerk and Gary Numan. --Gil Gershman

Not so great as lullabyes but.......2006-10-29
These have got to be the best RINGTONES on the planet. With the right conversion tools and a little bit of editing, you'll have people thinking your telephone is receiving calls from the future!
my baby loves it (no joking!).......2001-11-05
I bought this album for my six week old baby girl, hoping to find a Kraftwerk for infants. And while i have't been disappointed in the least i am actually quite surprised that she likes it as much as she does. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that my girlfriend listened to Computerwelt incessently back when that little tyke was still swimming around in the womb. Still though, some of these songs seem anything but soothing to me. One song in particular sounds like it has a alarm clock blaring continuously throughout its ten minute running time. But what did my baby do but sleep soundly through it. You may object and say that a baby that age, when asleep, would slumber through anything. But i have put this on in the middle of screaming fits and it calms her right down. We love it! Raymond Scott makes me proud to be a parent! I just can't wait now until she is old enough to appreciate Bruce Haack.
Great for baby, hard on mom and pop.......2001-08-09
I gave this CD to some new parents. They reported that on a long car trip, whenever their two-month-old son got fractious, this CD quieted him down every time. But they are starting to hate it. It has a jangly, grating undertone and a monotonous melody that gets old fast. So 5 stars for meeting its promise, 3 stars for musical merit -- 4 on average.
Birth of Electronik.......2001-07-16
I had the random chance of hearing the first two tracks of this ingenuous set one late night while listening to my school's radio station. Kind of intrigued by the history of the creator (who also created the first Moog-type keyboard for his daughter who wanted to be able to play piano without lessons), I HAD to hear the tracks that would be played from this album. Well, this album isn't just for babies....the tracks repeat simple melodies arranged in a loop of sorts with little change throught the track. Now, this may seem monotonous, but it isn't much different than what a lot of Baroque music does....this isn't Baroque, by any means, but the effect is the same.....peace achieved through soothing simplicity....and you can't get enough. This album is on my "Must Buy" list...not only for my love of electronic music, but also as it is a cornerstone to today's musical stylings of the world's best producers of electronic music.
The worldýs first 'ambient' synthesizer record.......2000-08-13
Here's something to annoy your infant with. If you let your infant listen to this he's likely to think he's on another planet. Not that he knows what this planet is all about . Your job is to confuse him even more; make it hard for him to learn how to cope with the snot-nose Disney brats he's likely to meet in nursery school. This will make him a rebel of sorts in the future and unfit for the traditional type of what is called a `job.' This will be the basis of all his future happiness. Think of it as a sort of vaccination against all the bad music he's likely to hear in the future. All us grown infants who could use a bit of infant wonder back in our heads also very much dig this music. It's great stuff. In fact, I prefer this to the two ENO discs I have which tend to make things a little too lethargic. This puts you in a relaxed but demented zone, not too far from the Twilight Zone. It sounds like a PONG gone surreally melodic. This is what you put on in the background when you're ready to read `War and Peace.'

As promised, Scott has grown along with your child. His third and final volume of infant electronica brings together the sleepy melodies and repetitions of the first record with the absorbing rhythms of the second. The music is sophisticated and complete--active musical play perfect for a toddler struggling with the associative prelearning of childhood. Volume 3 also brings Scott full circle within his own musical progression, with the triumphant march of "Tin Soldier" suggesting a reduced reading of his much-loved standard "The Toy Trumpet." Ticklish "Little Miss Echo" is endlessly charming, exploring the rainbow of peculiar futuristic sounds at Scott's fingertips, while "The Playful Drummer" returns to the zany cartoon-jazz humor of his roots and looks toward the modern techno sounds of Scott's innumerable admirers and imitators. --Gil Gershman
Customer Reviews:
Weakest of the three.......2004-09-30
I found this to be the weakest by far of the three SSfB CDs. I recommend either Vol 1 or 2 (four stars) before this volume.
Scott? Sounds like Brian Eno!!.......2001-03-31
"Little miss echo" sounds as if it could have come off of one of Brian Eno's ambient albums. The same sensibility of slowly shifting synth tones is here. The pieces in this series vary from incredibly ahead of their time to witty (toy typewriter) to merely annoying. The fact that they were made in the early 60's shows what an original thinker Scott was. A tip: I first listened to this series on a small boombox. That was a mistake. When I played it on my main stereo system with my amps spread throughout my house, the effect was surrealistic and mindbending.
"Little Miss Echo" will cure insomnia........2000-11-27
This is the third and final in the series, and the highlight is "Little Miss Echo". I've fallen into a relaxing sleep many times listening to the hypnotic repeating background and dreamy sounding melody of this spacious sounding song. It's even more relaxing than "Lullaby" from volume 1. The other songs are not bad but, "Little Miss Echo" is the real reason to own this. I purchased all three CDs and I love some of the tracks and I'm not so thrilled with others. I could definately take volumes 1, 2 and 3 and edit them into one very enjoyable CD.
I'd like to see how the kids turn out.......2000-08-24
I doubt you would really want to play this music for your infants, but then again- it would be a fun experiment. "The Toy Trumpet" will either annoy you, or, if you're like me, send you off squealing with childish delight. This is precocious, silly music for people with an affinity for cuteness. "Little Miss Echo," on the other hand, is a pretty, minimalist lullaby. Scott teases very relaxing, wave-like sounds from his machines for this one. The last track is a bit more of a mess...created with one of his contraptions that belts out sounds using a mathematical sequence...it comes off as very scattered and random. While I respect the concept, the result isn't so pleasing. Worth checking out, especially if you're a hardcore Raymond Scott fan, since there isn't a lot of his music available. Things are looking up, though, now that "Manhattan Research, Inc." has been released, and the "soothing sounds for baby" series is available again.

The essential reissues of Raymond Scott's music continue with this second volume of his Soothing Sounds series. As the infant grows both mentally and physically, less of the day is spent in sleep. The senses awaken, the muscles strengthen, and the child's rapid cognitive development demands more sophisticated amusements. Scott was concerned that the appeal of Soothing Sounds would grow along with his audience, and volume 2 is in every way a progression from the lullabies heard in volume 1. These pieces are more percussive, more animated, and more stimulating--"Toy Typewriter" explores complex tip-tap and click-clack rhythms so engrossing that children of all ages are sure to be amused and amazed. --Gil Gershman
Customer Reviews:
Not just for baby..........2000-05-02
This is wonderful. It makes you rethink what a melody is, a string of code reiterating itself to you until it has replicated inside you. There is no longer an 'it' -- there is only you again. It makes you wonder if anyone whose parents actually played this stuff to them when they were a baby might somehow come across a copy of this CD, and put it on, and unknowingly allow it to trigger old, old memory-strings, and be turned, suddenly and perhaps only for an instant, back into a cribbed infant...
It's very soothing to work to, as well. I leave it on repeat when I'm writing, and fall calmly into a work-trance. It seems to help me concentrate. My dog stops dropping slobbery tennis balls in my lap when it's on, and instead lies curled in his dog-bed, staring at a spot on the ceiling and making small wet dog-sounds to himself. Hours pass. No one minds. Sssshhhh. It's bedtime already, and we still don't have to turn it off.

One of our favorites.......2005-08-29
This is the one CD that my husband & both enjoyed listening to. Our daughter slept in our room as a baby & we wanted something that we wouldn't mind listening to ourselves when she was falling asleep. This fit the bill. The music is gorgeous but not too kiddie to annoy us after a few listenings. We have to buy another one for our next child because this one was so well used.

Tender Shepherd CD and Harp Sheet Music.......2007-02-04
This CD is lovely and I have the harp sheet music that goes with the CD. Kim is a lovely harpist and also an excellent teacher both in person and with her instructional books. Her arrangements for the songs that go with the CD are wonderful. My only complaint is that the sheet music seems to be missing the Tender Shepherd song that is included on the CD. Which is a shame because it is a lovely arrangement and the piano arrangement from the Broadway Musical is not nearly as nice.
Tender Shepherd is a masterpiece.......2007-01-04
Kim Robertson is one of the best Celtic harpers of the day. She performs her own arrangements of tastefully selected melodies, and she does this with skill and artistry.
One would expect an element of simplicity in a album of lullabies. Robertson's simplicity is radiant. This is one of the most relaxing CDs I own and I recommend it for everyone who likes New Age music, Celtic music, or simply gentle music. This is the 5th copy of Tender Shepherd that I have purchased. When people hear my CD, they love it, so I share it with them and buy another! This also makes a great new baby gift.
The best bedtime music ever.......2006-10-25
This CD was given to us as a gift when my son was born. He fell asleep to it every night as an infant, and now that he has rediscovered it at age 8, he listens to it every night again. If you're looking for a unique baby gift, I highly recommend this CD!

Relaxing and Calming.......2005-09-04
F.J. Bennett's Always Dreaming is the perfect album to put on when you've had a rough day. Light a candle, turn the lights down low, relax in a chair and listen to songs such as The Irish Harp, Always Dreaming or Halcyon Nights. The CD is described as a srt of Lullabies for the Harp, and the composer succeeds in his efforts. The music is sometimes wistful, sometimes with a New Age tinge, and others with a surprising turn such as Rubayat Reverie. F.J. Bennett's collection is well worth adding to your library. One of the best of this genre I have ever heard.

Each and every song a jewel.......2005-09-09
I was given this CD when my son was born in 2003, and it truly has become the soundtrack to his life thus far. I can't reminisce about his babyhood without Alex Degrassi's melodies woven therein. Each and every song is a jewel: calming, relaxing, soothing (but Boo Mamba is my personal favorite). I was really disappointed to learn that this CD was going out of print, since I've given a copy to every single baby born in my family and circle of friends since it was given to me. It's definitely worth buying used, and even if someone is asking $20-odd for it, BUY IT!
