Healing Dreams

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A winning addition to the Sound Healing Series from Soundings of the Planet artists, Healing Dreams offers a serene showcase for two of the label's prime talents, guitarist Scott Huckabay and flautist/label co-founder Dean Evenson. The pair, accompanied at various times by cello, viola, harp, and singing bowls (played by Walter Makichen) plus occasional wordless vocals by Gina Sala, co-create inviting sound fields that gently straddle the sonic sweet spot between structure and improvisation, resulting in a peaceful wash of sound that encourages both relaxation and an elevated state of mind. You'll find in Evenson and Huckabay's work a degree of sophistication and musicality (notably apparent in Huckabay's occasional pop-rock fingerings) that separates their work from lesser musicians who merely equate simplicity with blissfulness. Highlights include the heavenly hum Evenson (on keyboards) applies to Huckabay's passages on "Dreamstate" and the delicate intricacy of Evenson's flute on "Flowers to Life." If you're a newcomer to the label, don't let the hippie-era cover art, with its butterflies-and-stardust dreaminess, sway you into thinking this disc is only for the incense and macramé crowd. It's a fine, broadly appealing choice for massage, relaxation, or late-night zoning out. --Terry Wood

They reached their namesake year, but unlike Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey or George Orwell's 1984, the group 2002 never offered great expectations. Across an Ocean of Dreams sounds pretty much like their last several albums, which means lots of women's choirs oohing and aahing in celestial bliss, Enya-esque pizzicato strings, and meandering melodies. 2002 aspires to a quiet classical grandeur, but at a sluggish pace that makes Yanni sound as if he's on an adrenaline high. Wrapping you in faux-velvet gauze, they muffle the very air coming from your speakers. Late in the album, "Lady of the Moon" almost cuts through with a plaintive mix of acoustic and electric guitars, a bit of Renaissance recorder, and a breathy woman's chorus. But by then, you've been smothered to death. --John Diliberto

Album Description

What does the ocean dream? Glimpse into the depths of jeweled waters and the fantasia within. Surrender to the siren call. Come! Be transported under the waves, flowing with 2002's delicate strings, guitar, flute, keyboard and distant voices of angels of the deep. 2002 - Favorites on Billboard's New Age Chart for the past five years!

5 out of 5 stars For All New Age Fans.......2005-08-02

If you like New Age music, you have to pick up some 2002. Across an Ocean of Dreams is a great place to start. Also great are some of their other titles which I own in addition to Across an Ocean of Dreams called River of Stars, Chrysalis, This Moment Now, and Land of Forever. Get some or all of the albums I mentioned. Trust me, they are worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Massage Therapy Music.......2004-06-10

I am a massage therapist and discard many cds before I choose one to use for my clients. This is one I have added to my personal and professional collections. This is definetly a keeper!

Although I love Enya, I will not use it in the therapy room. Voices, drum beats and fast sections of music do not allow total relaxation. The mind follows popular/familiar musical remakes...so all those are also eliminated.

Ocean Dreams is the most calming and relaxing cd I have ever owned! It makes you feel as if you're sitting on the beach, just gazing up at the beautiful night sky. If you have trouble falling asleep at night, then I suggest buying this cd. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Pure tranquility...deepening our connection to the earth..........2005-08-31

This CD was given to me as a gift from a dear friend, and what an amazing gift it was! Evenson's music invites the listener into a deep state of connectedness...at first a gentle beckoning that soons envelopes one in total peace. The meditative (and often joyful) sound of Evenson's flute and the energizing flow of water are punctuated by the enchanting communications of dolphins and whales, inviting us to remember our deepest connection to all of life.

As a Reiki practitioner, I find this CD invaluable to my healing music collection. Evenson's work is unique and inspired and definitely sets a standard in the New Age genre. Even those who don't typically like New Age music should give this a listen. There is much to discover in Evenson's work. His intention to create "Peace Through Music" is evident in every track. Let the joy envelope your heart!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful relaxation with beautiful music and sounds.......2005-04-20

This was my first Dean Evenson CD and has started a snowballing collection - I love this guy! This CD is *VERY* relaxing and will calm you down right away. I have PTSD and used it during my worst times - it brought me back down to earth and got me relaxed. One note - do not use while driving. It's a little TOO relaxing for that. The ocean and ocean animal sounds are perfect and work wonderfully with the music. Well worth it!!

5 out of 5 stars Just RELAX!.......2004-03-10

Used it during my pregnancy and labor, then to sooth our baby to sleep. Our "baby" (now 9) loves this disc and other Dean Evenson material. We play it every night or as we head to nap time and he happily drops off to sleep. I've bought copies for his pre-school and daycare. It relaxes the kids and was guaranteed to get a room full of toddlers snoring in no time.

This is my favorite baby gift and I've also bought copies for friends and massage therapists. This CD is very special: pure relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars baby whisperer.......2003-10-05

I used this CD to relax during birth and to relax my baby in the first few months and it was a treasure.

Album Description

Hopes & Dreams is an exquisite musical odyssey. Lisa's Celtic harp is in its finest form on this heartwarming collection of all new, original music. Lisa Lynne is the musician-in-residence at City of Hope National Medical Center, where she created this music during her intimate interactions with people on their healing and spiritual journeys. Celtic harp, enhanced with world flutes and an assortment of rich acoustic instruments, creates an otherworldly experience...a nourishment for the soul.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, cathartic harp music for healing and hoping.......2006-10-02

Softly bewildered broken chords break the silence, echoing the way patients must often feel during the odyssey of serious or chronic illness... Then they modulate into a dreamy, hopeful tune in a major key, with a steady, comforting pulse of lower instruments below, nudging the listener on to accept a new routine of life that may lead to recovery or at least peace. "Hopes and Dreams" is another album of lush and gentle beauty by New Age harpist Lisa Lynne and her ensemble of talented instrumentalists. Here, she is joined in her original compositions by George Tortorelli on bamboo flutes, whistles and recorders, Nick Brown on guitars and bouzouki, Stephanie Fife on cello, Jem Moore on hammered dulcimer, co-producer Gil Morales on bass and keyboards, and John Wakefield on bells, chimes and hand percussion. The rich, nuanced, laid back sound they produce is truly calming and uplifting--the perfect, nurturing atmosphere in which to step out of the world of daily cares and seek healing or resolution. In the liner notes for this album, Lynne writes: "On my days home between tour dates, I drive my van full of harps [to City of Hope, a Los Angeles cancer treatment center]. We have workshops and concerts for patients and staff, and I play my harp in the various rooms, halls and treatment areas. I am humbled beyond words at the courageous and brilliant people that I have encountered at this place of hope and healing. They are the inspiration for this record, as most of this music has been written during my time there." Music born of love and offered in that spirit--who could ask for more? For other helpful, healing music, try Lynne's other recordings, and also those of harpists Hilary Stagg and Kim Robertson, and flutist Kay Gardner (especially her musical healing journey, "The Rainbow Path").

4 out of 5 stars Soothing..........2004-10-09

Composed at the City of Hope Cancer Center near Los Angeles, this music was developed during Lisa Lynne's frequent visits to the wards, chemotherapy rooms, and intensive care unit. Personally, I find it amazing that a busy musician would take the time to play to patients, helping to create a few moments of peaceful reflection in what is otherwise a traumatic process.

Lynne uses the Celtic harp, in consort with cello, dulcimer, acoustic guitar, various flutes, bells, and chimes. Most of the woodwind duties are carried by Lynne's partner George Tortorelli, who really does a lot of the album work, and should get equal billing. Nobody turns in virtuoso performances, but that's not what the album is about. Instead, the effect is meant to be melodic and soothing, and that's what it is.

The impact of the composition is what is important to the players, not the composition itself. Something that often gets put down as 'mood music.' But in this context I'm will to cut Lynne some slack. I do find listening relaxing and comfortable, and I don't have to mind that it isn't as complex as many of the composer/player efforts to which I am drawn. I don't mind relaxing every once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars More delightful music by Lisa Lynne!.......2003-10-21

This was my 2nd CD purchase of Lisa Lynne. I previously purchased Moonsongs and couldn't wait to get this one. This one did not disappoint. Just as beautiful as the other one. Relaxing, but not boring. Great music to have dinner by, riding in the car, a romantic evening or even quieting a baby. This is sure to become one of your favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleasant.......2003-06-07

Another exquisite musical work from New Earth Records, Lisa Lynne's Hope and Dreams is a soothing and beautiful composition. It guides us from the very first notes into a realm of harps and subtle melody, turning our attention away from the business of life towards soft nuances of being. At times it is uplifting and ethereal, reminiscent of the gentle light of the sun at dawn, illuminating a delicate landscape. At others, melancholic, tugging at the tender parts of our heart that still holding sadness, it coaxes out soft tears from the hidden folds of our being, so we can heal. New age music of true quality, perfect for those quiet and reflective moments or for gazing tenderly into a loved one's eyes

5 out of 5 stars Great Album - but many repeats........2003-04-24

Another enjoyable album by Suzanne Ciani. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to see many of the same songs that appear on so many of her albums. Some of these songs are in several albums I own already. It would be a great album for new Ciani fans. For old fans save your money.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-10-01

"Meditations" is a beautiful collection of fourteen of Suzanne Ciani's most peaceful and relaxing works, spanning her 20-year career and taken from ten of her masters. It is not intended as a "best of" collection in the usual sense, and is more of a thematic collection. The album is seamless, and the pieces work wonderfully together, creating a restful and soothing state in which to let the mind wander and perhaps drift off to sleep. Selections go as far back as "Seven Waves," Ciani's first major release (1982 in Japan, 1984 in the US) up through "Pianissimo III" in 2001. Ciani's early work was as a pioneer in the electronic music field, and "The Third Wave," "The Velocity of Love," "Lay Down Beside Me," "L'Azzurro," and "Lumiere" are from that era - it's so good to hear these pieces again! "Inverness" and "Go Gently" are also older pieces, but Ciani used the beautiful versions from her "Live" album with the Wave, updating them a bit. Most of the other pieces are from her solo piano "Pianissimo" albums and the combination of electronic and acoustic selections is fascinating. Suzanne Ciani has been one of my favorite artist/composers for many years, and this is an outstanding collection even if you have all of her earlier releases. Very highly recommended!

If this cd was a weather system, it would be a warm front mixed with apocalyptic plagues of frogs. Need i say more? Yes? Okay: this album will rock in ways and places previously thought unrockable. That's right.

5 out of 5 stars A real dream of a CD, great musicians, excellent music.......2001-09-27

This CD brings together the New Age pioneer, flutist Dean Evenson, with the otherworldly, cosmic guitarist Scott Huckabay, who have collaborated on other releases in the "Healing Sounds Series" for Soundings of the Planet. On this CD they are joined by Gina Sala (also of Sonic Tribe), who provides wonderful, meditative vocals to complement the music of the guitar and flute. In addition, the CD includes Dudley Evenson on harp, Jonathan Kramer on cello, Phil Heaven on viola, and singing bowl master, Walter Makichen. That combination of instruments should begin to give you a feel for the type of music to expect from this CD. The theme for the music is dreams as a doorway to the subconscous, as manifestations of our own mysterious imaginations. All the music in this healing series includes the "Earth Resonance Frequency" , a sub-auditory frequency at 7.8 Hz. This frequency has been shown to promote an alpha state in the human brain conducive to relaxation. Healing Dreams starts with this alpha frequency followed by lower "theta" frequencies. Don't worry, you won't hear them, just feel them. What you will hear is the really excellent ensemble music from a talented bunch of musicians who have your best interests at heart....good stuff.

        3 out of 5 stars Shayla.......2005-06-28

So I only bought this cd because my parents know Shayla and I've met her a few times. Also I like her Vietnamese stuff. But I've never really liked her American songs. It's not that she has a horrible voice or that the songs were bad it's just that they don't mix well together. Her voice is amazing (with Vietnamese songs) & the songs are incredible (but maybe if someone else sang them). Her accent is really deep so it throws the music off whack. Also she performed for my mom's Asian show not that long ago and I found out that she doesn't even sing Vietnamese songs anymore. She's die hard trying to break out into the American music industry. Good luck to her because it's been almost 4 years now. But I guess every one has there opinions...

5 out of 5 stars If You Only Believe..........2003-12-07

Although this is Shayla's first "American" CD, she made a fair effort and should be recognized for rising to a higher level of performance. Although she may not have the voice of American singers, she continues to bring passion into her music. Shayla is also a song writer. She co-written various tracks into this cd, making it more on a personal tone. Although this is not our vision of Shayla, it is her dream. Although she may never have sold out concerts, she did make her dream come true. I respect Shayla for believing in herself. The songs on the CD are not bad as well, they just do not showcase her voice in a higehr level, but the passion she has for her music is real. Give this CD a try...

Shayla is beautiful the same as her voice. I love to see her stage sometime.

        1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2003-10-09

She tries too hard to sing when she can't even sing at all. I can hear an accent in most of her singing so her voice isn't clear and melodic as most singers are. I am very disappointed that she was chosen to be the first Vietnamese artist to sell her Album in the American music industry. She was chosen on the basis of looks and not talent. There are plenty of better singers out there.
