The Ames are great, as usual, but why the same old songs when so many are awaiting release on CD ?.......2007-06-19
No criticism of The Ames Brothers' recordings. Were there ever 4 voices that blended so perfectly? It's always great to hear this vastly underrated group on CD but why on Earth did Living Era choose this particular selection of songs? More than two-thirds of these numbers already appear on CDs currently in circulation on "Best of" discs put out by Varese, Taragon and Jasmine. Now here we have the fourth release of these same hits. The Ames recorded hundreds of tunes and more than 30LPs (both 10" and 12") during their years with Coral and RCA. What we need is someone to put together some CDs to bring out more of their unreleased (on CD) material. Jasmine seems to be doing the best job of it so far. If I'm faced with yet another CD that contains all these same hits I'll think twice before spending money to get a mere handful of "new" songs while being given no alternative but to buy a 5th CD copy of all their same great hits. I suspect a lot of people are avoiding buying this CD for exactly that reason. I'm knocking a star off this disc because of the rather witless and unimaginative track selection on the part of Living Era's producers. As one of the top vocal acts of the 50s, The Ames Brothers could sing the phone book and they'd get my 5 stars any day of the week. Surely one of the greatest and most neglected vocal groups of all. There's an audience awaiting all the marvellous material that's still tucked away in the vaults and I wish someone would do something about it instead of just trotting out the same old titles every time.

Brilliant vintage hamonics!.......1999-07-21
The Comedy Harmonists were an a close harmony group who recorded in Germany from '28 to the late '30's. They were harassed and force to disband because of Nazi disapproval of their semitic origins as well as their avant-guarde, jazz-oriented material. They sing here in German and English doing everything from folk songs to Tea for Two with clarity, musical grace and lightness. Their comic songs are very deft and witty. If you enjoy close harmonics, you will find this recording a revelation.

Customer Reviews:
Loads of Fun!.......2005-04-11
The Cats and the Fiddle was an interesting precursor to uptempo doo-wop and even rap groups. Sort of an ensemble version of what the great Louis Jordan was doing at the time, these guys (mostly) combined wildly comical lyrics with percussion-styled string instrumentation. "Killing Jive" is a wonderful, fun-filled classic. If you listen very carefully, you'll see that it's a wild coded ode to marijuana smoking. "Thursday Evening Swing" is a pleasant tune about some maids and porters who get together on a party on their night off. "Gang Busters," "That's On Jack That's On" are other hilarious and entertaining tunes that does not necessarily require that one understands 1930s Harlem jive slang to understand. But try to put yourself in the spirit of the times and you'll enjoy it. Slower tunes such as "I Miss You So" are in the vein of the Ink Spots and a bit dry today, but there is so much good stuff here that it doesn't devalue this as an excellent purchase.

Uniqe!.......2007-03-09
These young women have voice and rhythm techniqes that are different from any groups' I've ever heard. All the songs are old - good old - but this will add up to a brand new listening experience for anybody. Highly recommended by a guy probably as old all three sisters.
THE BOSWELLS AT THEIR HOTTEST.......2005-09-10
This is a blazing collection of the one-of-a-kind Boswell Sisters at their most hot. By hot, of course I mean up-tempo and jazz-based, and that's the focus here. It's a fine cd, among a number of good ones featuring the inimitable Boswell Sisters.
Now, I hate to come right out and say it, but this needs addressing; The Andrews Sisters were a popular group that sang chirpy pop fluff with often burdensome studio big-band backings. Surrounded by the greatest songs of the century, they continuously recorded throwaway compositions. They were not instrumentalists, arrangers, or particularly great singers in the classic sense. And again, their music falls squarely under the pop umbrella. There's nothing wrong with any of that, of course (Bing Crosby recorded many sub-par songs with clunky orchestras, and is one of my favorite singers), but it makes comparison with their admitted idols, The Boswell Sisters, somewhat futile.
On the other hand, The Boswell Sisters were radical. They grew up in New Orleans surrounded by a thick gumbo of music and culture. They studied classical music and were masterful musicians even as very small children. They performed with the New Orleans Philharmonic! When the sisters got more into jazz, they tore its very DNA to shreds and reassembled it, radically remaking compositions (arranging themselves) to include absolutely WILD shifts in tempo, altered (or completely new) chordal structures, and mind-boggling vocal artistry which I lack the skill to properly describe. When the Boswell Sisters began to record, they worked with the cream of hot jazz musicians, in radical small-bands with wild, exciting soloing from musicians like Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, Bunny Berigan, and so on. Even when the Boswell Sisters were forgotten, jazz collectors sought out their records for the hot solos, then were shocked at the artistry of the Boswells, and the wildly experimental and creative arrangements and re-workings of known compositions. Basically the recordings with the Boswell Sisters turned out not to be some great solos between throwaway pop verses, but rather music AT LEAST as hot and imaginative as the purely instrumental records those same musicians had been recording alone!
So if you want something more pop and middle-of-the-road, then the Andrews will be great for you. They were an extremely pleasant pop group that kept morale up during WW2, and they were great fun on a number of Bing Crosby sides. The Andrews Sisters are an undeniable part of the wholesome homey heartland of the USA that got us through some of the most horrible times in human history. There is no denying that Patty, et al, were inexorably entwined with the very fabric of the national soul during that time.
That said, if you are looking for something to light your soul and your mind on fire, something wild and beautiful, full of mischievous glee (and purposeful innovation), lightning fast scat singing (often unison!) and untamed hot jazz solos, then the Boswells are right for you.

THE ANDREWS SISTERS ARE SUPERIOR! .......2005-01-17
Maybe it's because I grew up listening to the ANDREWS SISTERS, but I really had a hard time enjoying this Boswell Sisters CD. This is the second compilation of Boswell Sisters I've tried, and again, they just do nothing for me.
This disc sounded like the Andrews Sisters before they found their magical blend and the tunes themselves weren't very good either. It's not the Boswell Sisters fault, it's just that the great song writers of the late thirties and early forties were just around the corner. In my opinion, it seemed that 99% of the Andrews songs were GOOD, I felt that only a few on this disc were truly good. The arrangements were solid, but so were the Vic Schoen arrangements for the Andrews Sisters.
Sure, if there were no Boswell Sisters then there would probably be no Andrews Sisters, but I recommend a Andrews Sisters disc from this same label, first.

Fun Music from the past.......2007-01-16
Listening to this puts me in touch with my Grandmothers generation.
This fun album is informed by an innocence that is very rare in contemporary music.
A Great CD for music lovers.......2003-08-24
The Merry Macs were the first quartet to break out from barbarshop to Pop singing. Using tight harmony based on orchestration combined with rhythm and a little dance the Merry Macs woke up the singing world.
This album brings back a lot of the great memories of the wonderful music from the 40s. Music that is pleasing to the ears and has a great beat. For shear pleasure, this is worth it for twice the price.

Marvelous vocal harmonies!.......2003-11-16
As a collector of vintage 78 rpm records, I've always kept an eye out for sides by the "Revelers" on the famous Victor "scroll" label. Through the years, I accumulated perhaps a dozen records by this fine group, and every one of them is a gem. The Revelers were a group composed primarily of studio vocalists who recorded regularly as solosits with a variety of bands, or in vocal ensembles like this. Here, they sing in a style that is not barbershop-it's a little more melodic and without the long notes one hears in barbershop. The Revelers are five male voices accompanied by a piano and occasionally a small string trio. The voices blend together so smoothly! The tunes are great too; many of them, like "Dinah," "Ol' Man River," and "Dancing In The Dark" are classics, but you've never heard them like this! The remastering on this CD is quite good considering the original source material available. Some light surface noise is still audible, but it's a refreshing change from the heavy crackle on my 78 copies. The folks in ASV have kept the recordings in their original mono (no fake stereo here!). The notes in the accompanying booklet are not so hot, with too much emphasis given to mentioning each tune's "chart position" (never mind that pop record charts as we know them now were non-existant in the 1920s) and listing every other band the author could think of that recorded each tune. Fortunately, the discography for the included records is good, listing recording dates and original issue numbers. All in all, this is a fantastic set that is sure to please.
Excellent compilation... eagerly awaiting vols. 2, 3, etc........1999-10-07
This British CD is superb. The sound restoration from 78s is excellent however some of the material seems to have been captured to CD at a slower-than-78rpm speed (compare the original 78s and the examples on the hard-to-find German compilation). The inclusion of items by the Revelers' alter-egos: The Merrymakers and the Singing Sophomores are a rare treat. If you are a Comedian Harmonist fan (you know who you are) then you will enjoy this CD.

Enchanting French Chamber Works.......2004-12-01
Conchord ensemble certainly is bright and clear musicians, highlighted by outstanding instrumentalists, the likes of Daniel Pailthorpe/flue; Emily Pailthorpe/oboe; Barnaby Robson/clarinet; Nicholas Korth/horn; Douglas Paterson/viola; Bridget MacRae/cello. Pianist Julian Milford is just vibrant and passionate player here on this recording.
Sing quality of Loeffler 5 Rhapsodies for oboe, viola and piano are exquisite display of the three instrumentalists, and is just outstanding!
Pierne's work for flute, viola and harp ending with a delightful gigue is lively fun.
Durufle again highlights the viola, flute and piano, especially provocative is the Gregorian chant theme.
This one will grow on the listener with hearing of this new and profoundly gifted ensemble.
New Conchord Ensemble.......2003-02-05
I happened to be in London when Conchord debuted in the Wigmore Hall and I was blown away by the quality of the playing and delighted by their performance with their obvious conviviality. I bought this CD there and was delighted to see that the quality of their playing as I heard it comes through on the CD. What truly amazing young players they are ( from Britain, U.S. and Canada). Daniel Pailthorpe plays the flute with rare sensitivity and beauty; Julian Milford is an accompanist to die for;Emily Pailthorpe's oboe playing is the best I have ever heard anywhere. Watch this group, for they will go far. Anyone who loves chamber music will love this CD.
