Continuum

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Keyboardists Jon Jenkins and Paul Lackey come from the Vangelis school of orchestral synthesis. Their music on this 1995 CD shows two musicians trying to find a voice in a genre rife with pretension. They don't succeed. Fond of overblown strings and bombastic percussion, Jenkins and Lackey are seduced by their sounds, which are impressive when you're in a studio and the speakers and headphones make you feel as if you have a cosmic orchestra blasting at your fingertips. But in the cold light of day, their orchestra is stiff-fingered; the lines they may have thought were highly nuanced instead sound as if they came from plastic injection molds. There are a few artists, Vangelis and Richard Burmer among them, who successfully craft their own orchestras, but except for the sweeping expanses of "The Vision," with its rotating sequencer pattern and crescendoing orchestration, Jenkins and Lackey are strictly off the rack. Continuum is not without skill, and Jenkins emerges with a more original voice on his solo album, Flow. --John Diliberto

Continuum is about as apt a title as it gets for John Mayer's third studio disc. Every element, from the peerless guitar playing to the plainspoken poetry of the lyrics to the breathy-sincere singing, makes a return from previous efforts. But to weakly pronounce this another worthwhile effort from an artist the world has come to expect a whole lot from and then call it a day would be no minor misdeed, because it's also the best, boldest disc he's ever made. Taking maturity as a theme throughout, Mayer tackles a batch of adulthood's bogeymen: indifference on the uptempo chart-climber "Waiting for the World to Change," aging on the melancholy-sweet "Stop This Train," and emotional trainwreckage on the big-rocking "In Repair." That's not to suggest he's turned overly introspective--check the Jimi Hendrix cover "Bold As Love," where he hits one home for guitarists who've been living in the shadow of legend everywhere, and the hard-charging "Belief," which benefits from a mesmerizing, liquid groove. Continuum may be the third in a series, but a creative cop-out this is not; Mayer is his generation's musical superman--powerful, unassailable, and magnetic. Hand that man a cape. --Tammy La Gorce

John Mayer's third studio album follows the multi-platinum "Room for Squares" (2001) and "Heavier Things" (2003), and marks his first turn as producer. It is his most soulful, cohesive collection yet and he says it's no accident that this project is where all of his efforts, his potential, and his disparate influences fully come together.

This man is a genius. He takes simple lyrics with simple heartfelt themes and turns them into masterpieces. He's emotional with a voice to match, and a great guitarist.

I had attended his last concert at the Woodlands, Texas and enjoyed his music very much. I am a young 73.

1 out of 5 stars Wow - How About NO?.......2007-07-30

Heres the thing. Granted theres an audience for this trash, but I'm certainly not it. If you can get past the hideousness that is "Waiting on the World to Change", you are greeted with more vacuous and tone-deaf numbers rivaled only by the equally weak numbers in Mayers' back catalog.

Not to say that Mayer as a musician sucks. Not at all. In fact, hes infinitely better than both the frontmen of Aha and the Human League (I just realized that isn't saying much).

See, Im sure many people out there love the notion of a pasty white boy banging out pointless tunes on his guitar all the while hoping for added rock legend status. This isn't going to happen. Am I the only one who can see Mayer for the useless piece of garbage that he is? Apparently I am. Well anyway, this Mayer woman was once with Jessica Simpson, so that should give you an idea of what kinda trailer HE crawled out of.

One Star. And thats only because the production on this was 'passable'. This to me was an overblown attempt to be taken seriously in the music world, and Mayer only makes this more and more painful every passing album. I'm gonna go with NO.

Topflight pop singer pays tribute to her heritage on this amazing roots ranchera album that also features excellent backing by the world-famous Mariachi Vargas, all under the experienced hand of master arranger-composer-producer Ruben Fuentes. Everything clicks wonderfully here, but numbers that set a new standard include "Tu Solo Tu," an incredibly harmonic love ode; "Por un Amor," on the price of real love; and "Los Laureles," a song of declaration on which Ronstadt soars unbelievably high. These are old Mexican classics, played by arguably the world's best mariachi group and sung by one of North America's greatest vocal talents. Extras include performances by another world figure, requinto player Gilbert Puente, who made trio history when he led Mexico's Los Tres Reyes in the '50s and '60s. In the mariachi-ranchera genre, this CD easily ranks among the very best. --Ramiro Burr

5 out of 5 stars Muy lindo.......2007-04-26

I did not know that Linda Ronstadt was Hispanic until I heard this CD. Her papa was definitely a Mariachi, it shows in her singing. I like his Spanish CDs better than her English ones.

I am so glad that I found this CD. I hope that she continues to do more songs in the Mariachi style. I'm glad that she was able to go back to her ethnic roots. This is a wonderful, beautiful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Essence of Mexico.......2007-04-20

Linda Ronstadt does an excellent job in capturing the essence of Mexico. Being of partial Mexican origin myself, and having traveled south of the border many times; I could see in my mind images of Old Mexico...very traditional and very outstanding.

Other Spanish language artists used for comparison: Lola Betran, Nat "King" Cole, Nana Mouskouri, Vinciente Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, Ana Gabriel.

This is a great mariachi piece--one of my very favorite CDs and a must have for Linda Ronstadt fans. Linda is fantastic, and, oh boy, can she hold a note!

My Parents really enjoyed this particulay album when it came out a few years ago. This past month, we celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and this CD was played throughout the grand party - bringing sweet memories and tears of rememberance to both parents eyes and their childrens eyes. Being that Mom is of hispanic heritage and dad's deep appreciation of that culture - that adds up to my love of this type of music. This CD is a treasure that will provide memories forever.

Amazon.com essential recording

Cuban pianist Rubén González has lived through this century's greatest musical windstorms, from the emergence of son to salsa to Latin Jazz and more. Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. He ended up making a thrilling debut. This impromptu CD was cut in a day, and its limber vibe shines for all its uptempo looseness. González plays a rainbow of Cuban rhythms and prods his percussionists and lone trumpeter to great depths of conversation and great heights of flash. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars An un/rediscovered gem!.......2007-01-10

Having just seen the movie "Buena Vista Social Club", I needed to hear more wonderful music from the principal musicians and singers. Special thanks should go to Ry Cooder and his son for rediscovering this historic music before they all passed.( Of whom most already have.)
All the musicians and singers are very special in their own singular, as well as collective right, but my personal favorite is Ruben Gonzalez on piano. What a Gem! I urge anyone who loves Afro-Cuban Jazz to add this to your collection, you WILL NOT be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for anyone that likes Cuban music.......2005-11-28

A friend introduced me to this CD and I think I might wear it out. Three of the songs are his own compositions, while the rest of the songs are Cuban favorites. Ruben approaches these these pieces with a unique light and and lively style. The music is infectious and makes you want to get up and dance.

There is a nice variety. Unlike with some folk music where after you've heard a few songs it starts to sound the same--each song here is a gem of its own. This is one of those CDs where you will like every song.

5 out of 5 stars Farewell to Ruben Gonzalez.......2003-12-10

On Monday, December 8, 2003, Ruben Gonzalez died at the unregretful age of 84. Farewell to an unbelievably charismatic and talented musician! His death is the sad realistic reminder that as great musicians like him grow old and die, so does a priceless era of music that will never be emulated.

5 out of 5 stars Sadly no longer with us..........2003-12-10

Ruben Gonzalez no longer is with us. He passed away yesterday. At least he lived a life worth living! He was one of the best Latin pianists ever, one of those (like a friend said) that you just don't find any more. He combined technique and charm in a way that few have been able to. Fortunately for the rest of the world, Ry Cooder discovered him, along with Ibrahim Ferrer and a host of other Cuban geniuses of Latin music with his Buena Vista Social Club initiative. After that album, this "Introductory" recording presented Ruben Gonzalez's work to the world in a more focused way. You are bound to respect this gentleman once you take a listen to this album. Ruben Gonzalez: descansa en paz!

5 out of 5 stars The Past Re-Introducing Itself to the Ever-Emerging Present.......2003-08-22

Ry Cooder once described Ruben Gonzalez as, "A Cuban cross between Thelonius Monk and Felix the Cat." Ruben Gonzalez is no Thelonius Monk...and I cannot really say if he is Felix the Cat...but he is definitely an extremely rare piece of jazz history...an "endangered species" of sorts in comparison to today's lacklustre jazz scene. Thanks to the re-emergence of mostly forgotten Cuban musicians in the late 90's through such vehicles as the Afro-Cuban All-Stars and the Buena Vista Social Club, the world...or at least a portion of it...has had the opportunity to experience a truly unique skill and sound that once flourished. This description of Ruben Gonzalez's music cannot do him justice. When you listen to him either pounding out or softly lifting notes off the piano keys, feelings of excitement, nostalgia, appreciation, comfort, and reflection can all rise to the surface. His skill is difficult to match; his love of music nearly impossible to emulate. Ruben Gonzalez "is" the music he creates and plays...a living example of the musical past re-introducing itself to the ever-emerging present.

I grew up listening to Cri Cri and I was ecstatic to see this collection available online. I highly recommend this collection! I love playing the CDs right before I put my one-year-old to sleep... it helps calm him down, and he falls asleep shortly after. It is also a great collection to play when you have children in your car. It is a collection I hope to pass on from generation to generation and hope many more see the value and appreciate this timeless music.

I bought this, worried about the type of music I would find based on the cover images - the bright silly graphics are typically on bad, ear-aching music for children. But this music is pleasant for adult and child. If you want high-pitched children singing along though, this is not the CD for you. Unfortunately, there are no lyrics in any language, which I greatly wanted.
Overall, a nice cd and would purchase again.

5 out of 5 stars The standard by which ALL Latino music should be measured!.......2007-04-10

Though I grew up on the Lower east side of Manhattan I was never much into Latin music or Salsa. My brother however is a fanatic and gave me this album back in 1979 with a dedication in Spanish from Ruben Blades! Needless to say this has become an heirloom.

As for the music, upon hearing the songs I was instantly struck by the fact that this did not sound like any other latin music I'd ever heard. The Lyrics were actually meaningful, uplifting, exhorting! The masterful music infused with Willie Colon's breathtaking orchestration will take you away to musical bliss. All of this while accomplishing the impossible; EVERY song can be danced to yet simultaneously meditated on. The thought provoking lyrics will have you rethinking your role as a Latino while tapping your feet.

There is no filler on Siembra. There is not one bad song on the album. My 15 year old just heard it recently and was blown away, a testament to this true Masterpiece that will live on for decades.

5 out of 5 stars One of latin music's most important recording!.......2006-05-25

This is the new remastered edition of this classic Willie Colon recording featuring Ruben Blades on vocals. The lyrical aspect of this recording has been covered elsewhere so I'm not going to dwell on it besides metioning that most of the lyrics deal with the political reality of the "latino everyman."
The reissue has all the original cover art and an appropiate essay covering the significance of this recording. The only drawback is that it didn't include the lyric sheet or additional tracks. I'm sure that someone, somewhere has to have outakes from these sessions. Maybe these things will come as a part of a box set of another "commemorative" edition once everyone involved "gets paid."
Otherwise, the sound is louder, more focused and a bit cleaner. But again as with some of these new Fania remasters, the top end is rounded off to eliminate hiss. I find that bothersome, but I'm just being picky.

5 out of 5 stars A fine fusion.......2007-07-09

I saw this band perform in the film Driving Lessons. I was so much in love with their music that I went directly home to order the CD from Amazon. I'm not disappointed. What a great idea - to somehow fuse Celtic instrumentation into Latin music. It's an original and natural fit. It's not gimmicky like Paul Simon's African forays, wherein it sounds like he took the vocals off an indigenous recording and added his own. There's a real synthesis here, and it works perfectly.

Salsa Celtica has got the horns, great lead singing and unison background choruses of Latin, as well as the violin and flute of Celtic music. For me that's heaven.

5 out of 5 stars And now for something completely different.......2007-01-04

I heard Salsa Celtica's Auld Lang Syne on December 30th on NPR's Folkways in the car and immediately as it started my wife and I remarked that we had to find the CD. This group is really hard to believe, as they all seem to be white Scots making amazing Latin music. There are parts of it that remind me on Manu Chao, with snippets of Spanish language radio playing in the background. In parts or as a whole this album is happy music, and as one reviewer mentions above, you simply can't help but start to dance. This is a great album and deserving of your ears and there isn't a weak track amongst them. Shop with confidence, I am sure you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Me Wish I Played Bagpipes.......2005-05-04

I sought out this album after hearing "Sol de la Noche" as the opening track on Putumayo's compilation album, SALSA AROUND THE WORLD. And there's always a danger when one buys an album based on a single song, but there's nothing disappointing about this album.

This Scottish group is an amazingly talented ensemble, taking salsa traditions and rhythms and infusing them with celtic instruments and traditions. The performances are tight, inventive, and I defy you to listen to this album and not want to dance, even if it's just in your chair.

Their closing rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" is not to be missed. I WILL buy their future albums.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2005-05-04

This is one very good cd, for those who like a more Cuban-feel to their salsa. The slow, deliberate pace of most of the tracks is so refreshing, compared to some of the mind-bogglingly quick "salsa" being mass-marketed today. "Sol de la Noche" (which can be found on Putumayo CD "Salsa Around The World") is a great track, which features a nice hint of Scottish sounds, driving a great Cuban beat.

The "Guajira Sin Sol" track is amazing, my personal favorite. This song could play at all the best Latin lounges, it is so smooth and chilling, yet makes you want to jump up and shake your booty.

"Ave María de Escocia Medley" was the third best track, a fun song with great lyrics. Great salsa track, the hardest salsa track on the CD. Great stuff, and you WILL want to dance to this!

The other songs are good, just not as good as those above. The "Cumbia Celtica" track is very innovative, and they actually manage to pull off an authentic Colombian/Scottish feel. These gentlemen are great musicians, and we should be watching them in the future. With just a little more tweaking, they might just be the next top band in Salsa.

5 out of 5 stars How can a Scottish band play latin music this well?.......2003-12-08

Sailing on the west coast of Scotland this summer, we walked into an isolated pub and were blown away to hear the best Latin music this side of Miami! Don't know where these guys came from, but if you can listen to this stuff without getting up and dancing, check to make sure you're still breathing. Fantastic Latin beat!

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Among the best.......2007-05-20

This CD is just another example of great Bossa Nova straight from brazil. Just like the other ones, it has some beautiful tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Jobim "Mixing it Up".......2007-01-11

Excellent!! A great combination of different extremely talented world artists doing a diffent take on Jobim's music. If you love Jobim and want to "mix it up" this is a great selection.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-09

Love this! It's part bossa nova, kind of jazzy. Takes me to a beach with white sands and clear blue water, exactly where I want to be at this time of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing.......2006-09-06

I've had this cd for about 10 years now, and I've loved every minute of it again and again. Every song has its own beauty, in a very diverse way. The performance in "Chega de Saudade" is particularly riveting, each instrument delivering an absolutely perfect solo.

Also, not to be vulgar, but having sex to this album? A+++ would do again.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Lhasa De Sela has distinguished herself as a singer and storyteller with her debut album, La Llorona. The 25-year-old Montreal resident, who grew up traveling through Mexico while living on a school bus, sings of her tortured heart with the accompaniment of guitarist-producer-arranger Yves Desrosiers and a cabaret-style band. Already compared to those of Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday, De Sela's haunting voice is memorable on each of the 11 songs (only 3 are nonoriginal) that range in inspiration from Mexican ranchera to Eastern European klezmer. --Cristina Del Sesto

Amazon.com

Half Mexican American, half Jewish American and all rainbow chile, singer Lhasa de Sela's Spanish-language, world music/alt-rock debut shimmers with honest emotionalism, with no trace of the posturing and whining that passes these days for deep, girlish thoughts. The girl's young, but she's equipped with imagination, confidence, and technique enough to take that husky, urgent alto anywhere she wants. And she goes there. Guitarist-producer-arranger Yves Desrosiers cloaks all this splendor in rapturous arrangements that include, among other elements, the sound of rain, flamenco-influenced guitar, and a slide bass of his own design. Even if you don't understand Spanish, you can't miss the point ... the feelings. Lhasa's just begun, but her stranger-than-fiction background and dazzling gifts already place her among music's top-rung storytellers. --Elena Oumano

I can't get enough of this woman's music! I shout More, More,More!

5 out of 5 stars SUPRISE, SORPRESA.......2007-01-04

2 out of 5 stars Frida's more attractive soundtrack sister.......2006-03-16

Utterly amazing and unique sound. Her voice is so powerful.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect CD.......2006-02-23

The only reason I am giving this CD 4 stars instead of 5, is because it is too short! Lhasa's voice is sultry, sad and powerful. The music is haunting yet airy. Perfection!

4 out of 5 stars Felt like eating ice-cream in drizzling rain..........2005-11-07

Funny, i had no idea about this album nor the artist.. My mother was in Istanbul airport waiting to board the plane for New York and she was just strolling about in the last minute newspaper/souvenir stores.

The music playing in the shop got her attention and she asked the owner at the cash register if she could purchase the cd. The store owner agreed and took it out of his CD player and gave it to her half price since it was used. (At least he included the outer cover and the booklet inside).

I first listened to the album while i was chatting late night on the computer with my friends. I wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics or the songs, it was just intended to be background music.
I finished the whole cd, i was still chatting, and i wanted to listen it again. I didn't understand the lyrics, but it sounded sad. I felt bad, it made me think that De Sela came from poverty and an unhappy childhood, i thought of South American kids running around in narrow streets.. I realized that i really loved these songs, i don't know what the lyrics are about, it just sounds that there is some pain and love in these songs.. In the 5th song "El Payande" it sounds like she is defying somebody/something and then gives in. And then the next song starts playing, it made me recall a summer in Barcelona.. Gaudi, colors, late nights a touch of Picasso somewhat Don Quixote...

This cd is for people who are looking for a piece of imaginitive music, not intended to listen in the car or whilst jogging..

5 out of 5 stars A mixture of jazz and tango to my ear........2007-08-05

I doubt that anyone would be disappointed with this CD. Classical and jazz enthusiasts would appreciate its quality. Anyone who has visited Argentina and witnessed the tango would be even more enthusiastic, I think. I like it!

4 out of 5 stars Piazzolla, el mejor tanguero.......2007-04-11

Es un deleite de sonido, brillante, inteligente, genial Tango de un maestro, música que viene del corazón... ¿puede haber algo mas sentido?

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-28

The best album by piazzolla I have played. the violin playing by antonio agri on milonga del angel is the very best and really captures the tango. My only regret is that the album did not include oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars He's got the soul.......2003-07-02

Piazzola must be the devil.... cause he certainly captured the soul (of tango, that is!)

Brilliant music. Exceptional CD!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST for the Piazzolla neophyte!.......2000-12-21

I have more than ten Piazzolla CDs and this is my favorite. It's actually the first one of his that I ever bought, and I think that this is probably the best CD that a beginner to Piazzolla and Modern Argentine Tango could buy. It has a generous sampling of the several hundred songs that Astor Piazzolla wrote in his life, and it consists mainly of live recordings, which adds to the intensity of each piece. Interestingly enough, there are nearly 200 CDs of Piazzolla music (if not more), and even the songs in the ones recorded by Piazzolla himself vary significantly from album to album. This one, however, is a real joy and will get anyone's toes tapping.

5 out of 5 stars Great Brazilian Music.......2007-05-20

This CD provides you with some great tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. The songs take me away and place me in the heart of Brazil; the land of high soaring spirits. Would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-14

This is probably my favorite album of all time. I purchased it about 8 years ago and listen to it regularly. Can't understand a single lyric from it (a few excepted) but it remains one of the best I own. It is soulful, enchanting, exciting, and mysterious all at once.

If you are in the mood for something different that will grow on you, try this one. You won't regret it. I promise.

For something similar and equally intoxicating, try Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" or "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". Both fantastic choices.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29

I enjoy Bossa Nova, beautiful music I have enjoyed all the cd's, I have purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Brasil.......2006-10-29

I play this CD frequently. Love the choices of artists and songs. Shows off the legacy of some of the artists as well. Would recommend it to the many fans of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Good Bossa Nova and MPB.......2004-04-13

I picked this up several years ago, and what a great disc this is. It's got some old classics on it and some pretty rare tracks too. At the time I picked it up, this was actually a series. There is another cd titled: "Samba Brasil" that has a similar cover, but is white and green.

The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.

Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.
