Circle of Life
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Collaborating since 1984, Susan Mazer and Dallas Smith have created some of the finest contemporary instrumental music available. Their compositions merge the aesthetics of jazz, classical and world music into an experience that feeds both the intellect and spirit.
The Circle of Life is an especially unique recording that was created over the course of one full year, during which time Mazer and Smith lived intimately with the melodies and harmonies of each piece, wanting to express the ephemeral moments of life that are at once profound, fragile and transformational. This album extends beyond the boundaries of genre and offers richness in melody, rhythm and sonority.

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
fun but flawed.......2007-05-07
in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5
BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5
HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5
so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.
Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09
This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!
Great Album!.......2007-03-31
This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.
Highly recommended.

Disney.......2004-11-30
This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.
Wonderful Orchestrals.......2002-02-11
What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

The fabulously musical Kings Singers visit the realm of popular music in this recording of "timeless songs from famous movies." Their stellar blend flourishes when the Kings apply their close-harmony arrangements to a cappella versions of "Kokomo," "Everything I Do," "The Rose," and "Groovy Kind of Love." The recording falls short, however, when the group tackles songs that highlight a solo voice. Songs like "Wind Beneath My Wings," "I Will Always Love You," and "The Time of My Life" demand the distinctive interpretive character of a Whitney Houston or Bette Midler to enliven the music's passion. The Kings Singers have spent so much time perfecting the art of ensemble blending, that they've lost the ability to be successful soloists. The weakest arrangement is that of Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die." The soloist struggles with intonation and audibly battles the tessitura of the ascending line. (Who would've thought that the former Beatle was such a flawless lyrical tenor?) Still, when the voices embark on what they do best--function as a vocal orchestra--the result is delightful. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
King's Singers - Thumbs up or down?.......2004-04-27
Although my favorite ever KS CD was the Beautiful Dreamer one, this was also pretty good. Even though I agree that it's not the best recording they have with regard to quality, I like how they've given these classic movie oldies their own unique twist. I would never have listened to most of these songs if not because they were sung by the King's Singers; however, I've fallen in love with quite a few. One thumbs-up!
Get "Spirit Voices" instead.......2002-12-01
Circle of Life (COL) has to be one of the crummiest albums I've ever owned. I'm a big fan of The King's Singers, but this album stinks. There are only a couple of decent tracks on it, such as "Kokomo"... oddly, the exact same track appears on another album released by the group in the same year (and not a "best of" album), namely Spirit Voices (SV).
Both albums feature the otherwise-a cappella group singing with instrumental backing (mostly), but SV is successful at it, whereas COL demonstates how not to do it; to wit: take a talented six part vocal group, give them a crummy arrangement that doubles lots of vocal parts and pits the group against the orchestra, and make the (British) soloist give it some "soul" (ouch).
It took me a while to get used to SV, but now I really like it; COL, on the other hand, makes me want to bash out my own brains to make the pain stop. SV experiments with smaller orchestrations and interesting combinations of vocal and intrumental parts, but COL is just a big "let's get together and sing our lungs out with an orchestra" album, a style which must be popular in England or something.
Two stars, and only out of respect for the fact that The King's Singers is the best a cappella vocal group in the world (this album notwithstanding).
Lose the orchestra!.......2002-03-05
I much prefer the group's a cappella works - the instrumental accompaniment makes for a sappy sound.
'Elevator Music'.......2001-12-16
I am realy dissapointed with this CD.
It starts out very well with 'Lion King' until orchestration is added including a lot that seams synthesized and dimensionly flat. Diction holds no interest.
Have you ever had a mouthfull of de-ionized water? It's like water but something is so spewingly absent and bland.
This describes this CD. The sad thing is that there are so many pieces on this album that could have been completely captivating!
King's Singers Strike Again..........2000-07-02
King's Singers are well known for their harmonies that can stir the soul and this album is no exception. It is another powerful testament to a capella music and it's beauty. My only complaint (as is mentioned in other reviews) is that there are a few numbers that are a little heavy on the background music but others have just the right blend to make it perfection. It's excellent despite this and I'm anxiously awaiting the next release from this more then talented group.

Disney has been a relatively late comer on Broadway, but it's been hitting pay dirt since the stage version of Beauty and the Beast opened to critical acclaim and commercial success in 1994, followed by The Lion King and Aida. While Aida was the only original stage creation, the other two featured new songs that were not in the movies. In addition, Disney worked with some of New York's finest theatrical talent. In hindsight, hiring Julie Taymor to stage The Lion King was a stroke of genius, but it really was a daring gamble at the Time. Likewise, Beauty and the Beast gave talented theater singers like Terrence Mann and Susan Egan a chance to shine in meaty roles. Disney groomed talent as well: Heather Headley was cast in a supporting part in The Lion King before moving on to the title role in Aida. All three shows are represented on this CD (with a companion book due in October 2002), making for a perfect introduction to their best-known songs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great Listening.......2007-01-23
The Kingston Symphony Orchestra (Kingston, Ontario) may not be the NY Philharmonic, but they do a very creditable job of providing wonderful music for easy listening. I was particularly delighted to find orchestral arrangements of these wonderful tunes. I am very glad that I purchased this album and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of music.
Fun Disney.......2007-01-10
I enjoyed this album and found it useful to choreograph dances for my students.
Somewhat sub-standard production quality, but excellent tunes and arrangements.......2005-09-01
The Kingston Symphony Orchestra might not be the very best ensemble in the world (and it shows on this recording), but the lasting power and beauty of the songs on this album and some of the new and lovely arrangements of them are worth the listen. There are some definite technical and musical flaws as far as the recording and ensemble go, but the music and how it's arranged makes up for it.
Three stars for some soaring moments, due to classic tunes and arrangements.
My main beef: Where's The Little Mermaid?? Why discount one of the most beautiful Disney scores ever written?
Crap!.......2005-08-09
What a scam! Terrible arrangements played by a third rate ensemble, called the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, that sounds more like a bad high school orchestra playing in a gym. Don't waste your money on this dog.

Lilting, Lovely, Inviting and Hopeful.......2007-05-06
I was introduced to this artist through the work of Don Miguel Ruiz. I love his message and the hopeful honesty that peppers his work. I figured if he endorsed it, it would be worth trying out. OMG... nothing prepared me for the sheer quality in Cari Cole's voice and the inviting sound of her music. Not only is the message something I enjoy hearing in each song, but it is music I really look forward to putting on the CD and being taken on a journey. Incredible voice. Inviting music. Hopeful Message!
Very inspired - Eloquent.......2007-02-07
Cari has captured some of our common experience in this recording. Beautiful words and harmonies. As I continue to listen, I continue to appreciate. Several speak to my soul with reminders like, "I will respect my body" and other affirmations which reinforce loving our Selves. Always gold to be found and appreciated in Cari's creativity.
Beautiful.......2007-01-08
Cari Cole is uplifting and inspiring. Her music is a wonderful way to relax and be at peace. Cari has a beautiful voice that just empowers the words she sings so gracefully.
A Voice of Heaven.......2004-11-08
This is absolutely a piece of jewel to keep. I do not understand why our pop culture do not play the music in regular radio channels (well, maybe I just have not listened to the radio enough). The songs Cari Cole sing in this album is something you enjoy when you re-listen. Cari Cole truly has a beautiful voice. For some people, singing the prayers sometimes help them experience the words in a more powerful way because it involves more senses. This album truly helps us to experience love and peace.
My favorites are "Whenever the Time is Now", "The Circle of Fire Prayer" and "The Lord's Prayer", though all others are wonderful as well. All songs are mellow yet suthing.
For "Whenever the Time is Now", I especially like the part about "Whoever you are is enough, Whatever you have is perfection, Whoever you are with is the one". These are the words we need to be reminded when turbulent times come when we always need to have more and better. For "The Circle of Fire", I will always remember the four words we want to bear in mind, which is gratitude, love, loyalty and justice... and these words begin with us.
Some songs are beautiful in melodies but not in words. However, these 10 songs are beautiful in melodies and artistic in words. May you experience love and peace while listening to this CD as well?
DANCE YOUR WAY TO LOVE , HEALING, CELEBRATION.......2004-06-18
Both Cari's voice and the instruments on this CD are pure and powerful- shamanic,religious,sweet,heart-opening and healing - combined with the beautiful healing messages of Don Miguel Ruiz. Will be using this CD for dance events and healing workshops. Here in Brazil, paid $10 customs fee on top of price for CD. That hurt until I listened - I would pay $300 for this CD if I had to! This compilation gives a pretty good idea of what you'll hear if you buy a ticket for a Broadway show in 2003. Leaving revivals aside (there's no Man of La Mancha or Gypsy, for instance), the tracks tend to encompass contemporary songwriters on the Great White Way. Fittingly, the CD begins and concludes with numbers from Hairspray, arguably the most vibrant new pop musical to come down the pike in ages. Sandwiched between are songs by authors making a belated stage debut (Mel Brooks and The Producers, Billy Joel and Movin' Out), arty newcomers (Janine Tesori and ) and seasoned pros (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with Beauty and the Beast). Of course, the most seasoned pro of them all may well be Giacomo Puccini, making a belated Broadway debut thanks to Baz Lurhrmann's production of La Boheme. The addition of Chicago's "All That Jazz" (from the movie, not the show!) reeks of opportunism, but overall it doesn't spoil a varied collection that should appeal to broad-minded pop lovers everywhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

What do I need with This?.......2003-07-06
If you are a broadway passer-by, someone who looks to getting to know just what's on broadway and not what's it like, someone who says he's seen all of the broadway shows after reading the "what's on listings" in the papers this is a CD for you. I don't own the CD but own all of the Cds from which songs were taken to make this CD. every musical has it's own style and kind of music, and this CD doesn't even take all the highlights. If you are into really experiencing something when listening to a cd, if you are a real broadway-lover and you are interested in modern musical-writing, every one of the original cast recordings (from which songs were taken to this CD-hairpsray, producers, millie, aida, b&b, boheme, moving out) will be a much bigger enjoyment for you than this one. and most preferabely- all of them! :)

Album Description

HEARTFELT BREATHTAKING MUSIC.......2007-05-09
I have a couple of Susan's and Dallas's earlier CD's and continue to play and love them...they make beautiful music together! I first met them in the early 90's when they played together in South Lake Tahoe at Harrahs and was enchanted with their spirit/soul music. The Circle of Life album really speaks to our hearts and is very calming and healing. Don't hesitate to take this album home as it will be one of your favorites.

Album Description
Having sold over 25,000 copies of their debut, Stairway To Fairyland, the subsequent tour with Saxon, Angra and Edguy and with Savatage and Skew Siskin in August 1999 as part of the Popkomm music fair in Cologne, Freedom Call were well on their way to triumphant beginnings. Their second release, Crystal Empire, even surpassed the debut's success. June 2002 saw the arrival of the third Freedom Call recording, Eternity, followed by an extensive tour with Blind Guardian, during which their most recent release, Live Invasion, was recorded. At the same time, Freedom Call established themselves as a headlining act in their own right and were celebrated as the stars of the Wacken Road Show 2004 night after night. The Circle Of Life will doubtlessly add to their new status. A large-scale European tour is in the pipeline for spring 2005, including a surprise special guest who is bound to send the ever-growing melodic metal fan community into raptures.

Freedom from recent trends.......2007-01-17
A decent mix of good ol' fashioned hard rock. Heavy guitars. Some fast tempo drumming without the screaming, hard to understand lyrics of speed-metal bands; and without actually changing the tempo of the song. A welcome relief after having to live through the Grunge era, and now the Rap era.
My name is Justin, and I am a Freedom Call fan........2006-07-15
There, I said it! I know all of the reasons I shouldn't like this band. They're like a more upbeat version of Helloween (which is a pretty damned upbeat band to begin with). They have too many sing-along choruses. They have the cheesiest lyrics this side of Hammerfall. Their albums are all pretty much the same. They're just too happy to be playing metal (no leather and spikes for these guys).
I love them anyway. I know how cheesy they are, but I just don't care. I know their choruses are sing-songy - it just makes them that much easier to sing along with in the car (yes, I do that, thank you very much). Call it a guilty pleasure, but I am a confirmed Freedom Call fan.
Of course, there is a lot to like here. The guitar work is fantastic. The album is full of great melodies. And Chris Bay's vocals, which are very reminiscent of Andre Matos (though not quite as high), are crystal clear and absolutely perfect for this kind of music. Sure, the band is sticking pretty close to the same formula on Circle of Life as it has on all of its previous albums, but it's enjoyable, so I can't really complain. They do seem to be running a bit low on ideas though.
If you're into bands like Angra, Stratovarius, Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Hammerfall, and you don't mind a little cheese in your diet (and let's face it - if you listen to Hammerfall you can't mind it that much), then you'll probably enjoy Freedom Call as well.
Just above average...........2005-05-04
Freedom Call is a power metal band from Germany that have been together since the late 90's. Their music is in the vein of Gamma Ray, early Angra, and Stratovarius. Freedom Call's latest offering, The Circle of Life, doesn't break any new ground, but still stay's consistent. It seems to me that the band has scaled back on speed, and have created more of a moderate, heavy sound. With that being said, the music starts to sound the same after a while! In addition, the music sounds like it was a little rushed in the process. This could be that most, if not all of the band members are involved in other projects. If you like a straight forward, metal sound, then The Circle of Life won't disappoint. If you're hoping that Freedom Call has moved forward some with their sound, then you're going to be let down as I am!
