From the Artist
The Anasazi, or 'Ancient Ones,' lived throughout the Southwest desert. What structures remain in Chaco Canyon reveal tantalizing clues of the center of a complex culture. Although they had no wheel or beasts of burden, the Anasazi built roads up to 30 feet wide, stretching straight for hundreds of miles in all directions, which often necessitated stairways cut into the cliffs of their canyons. There were puzzlingly few 'households' in the large structures, yet archaeologists have found 'trash' from thousands, as well as evidence of trade from as far away as Central America. And at the top of Fajada Butte (see front cover photo), they found the only identified midday solstice marker in North America. Many now believe that Chaco was the trading and spiritual center for a compelling culture.
'If Chaco has only small houses, it would be like many other Anasazi communities. But something different happened here. Chaco Canyon became the center for some sort of a regional system. Archaeologically we know the system is there, but we are not at all sure how it worked. However it was organized, the system involved far flung communities tied together with a network of roads, and it produced magnificent structures such as the great houses and the great kiva of Casa Rinconando.' (Casa Riconanda Trail Guide, Southwest Parks and Monuments Association, 1988).
