Customer Reviews:
Where Are You My Brothers.......2005-08-04
Dmitri Hvorostovsky's voice is at its amazing, beautiful, passionate best. He seamlessly moves from silken pianissimo to forte, conveying all the tragedy and futility of life lost through war, the false hope and despair of soldiers who have trudged too far and seen too much death, destruction and experienced too much pain, fear and hunger.
songs of courage, loneliness, patriotism.......2004-08-02
Of my nearly 20 Dmitri Hvorostovsky albums, this one is in the Top 3, which has Dmitri singing in quite a different style than what he is most famous for, as one of the great operatic singers of our era, and this CD is far from the "opera singer does crossover CD" type of recording, which can sometimes be quite awful, but sings softly and with intense passion and sincerity, his dark honey toned baritone perfect for these melodious, gorgeous songs.
Though the focus of the songs is WWII, some were written as early as 1905 ("The Hills of Manchuria"), to the wonderful "Cranes" from 1969, and "Somewhere Far Away" was the title for a TV series ("17 Moments of Spring"), about a Russian spy in Nazi Germany, that was shown in 1973.
Some songs are more sublime than others, like "Unexpected Waltz" and "On a Nameless Hill", but there isn't a single composition that isn't filled with beauty and performed to perfection. Hvorostovsky has a voice that is a gift of God, with the technique of a master, and the soul of a true artist.
He is backed brilliantly by Constantine Orbelian and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the folk group Style of Five, and the rousing sound of the Spiritual Revival Choir of Russia.
The booklet insert is excellent, with liner notes, bios, lyrics in English and transliterated Russian; the sound is good and total playing time is 57'28.
The most beautiful male voice there is.......2003-12-26
The sound of very beginning phrase of it's first song "Somewhere Far Away" grabbed me. This title song for TV series was sung in his natural voice rather than operatic singing. I found it absolutely beautiful. Have you ever heard Dmitri's speaking voice? Renee Fleming quoted "Dmitri has the most beautiful male voice I've ever heard". Well I must say many of us have to agree with her. This album is a good collection of war time songs that indicate harsh reality of soldier's life and emotional state. He expressed them very eloquently. Text has translations but you can feel the depth without it. These songs are melodious and tuneful, I liked his flexible singing of forte to exquisite pianissimo. This is not just sell out for Russians but to everyone. As a Japanese, we grew up in Russian folk songs were heard everywhere. It's nice he introduced us to further extension of Russian materials. Evidently his colaboration with his father and Orbelian worked well. I also appreciate the lightness of "Katyusha" is a nice bonus. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I recomend it to everyone. I hope I get to hear these in his recital someday.
I attended his recent opera(War and Peace /Onegin) and recital in Tokyo. This was his first public performances in Tokyo, yet he was extremely popular here. He received mountain of flowers and presents, and for autograph session, nobody seemed to left the house. His high quality of vocal art, stylish and expressive singing and at most striking impact on his stage presence were overwelming. I hope he'll come back again.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable... but poor quality........2007-01-07
Got this, and a few others by the same producers, and LOVE it! -- except for the poor recording quality. The songs are upbeat, fun and perfect for an afternoon ride in the car. My little one likes to sing along! It also ends with classical music, that seems to coincide with my little one dosing off in his carseat. The only real problem... and, it's a real problem - as I have this CD and a few others by the same company... the volume greatly fluctuates between songs. I'm always having to turn the volume down or up to make the CD enjoyable. Very unfortunate... because I do enjoy the music.
Great CD!!!.......2006-05-23
My husband purchased this cd when our daughter was about 7 months old and she now is 13 months old. She absolutely loves the music!!! My 3 year-old niece loves the songs and playing sing-along! We play it for our daughter her all the time in the car when we run errands. She really enjoys the songs..we love the songs too!! I find it that playing this cd helps sooth her, specially during those times that she is being fussy. I'll definitely recommend it to any parent of infants and toddlers.
Fun fun fun CD!.......2005-10-13
This is a great ride-in-the-car CD. It's not really childish, but takes a few modern adult songs and makes them child-level. It also takes the classic child songs and spices them up a bit for even adults to enjoy. It ends the CD with a few classical songs to settle kids down for (hopefully) a short siesta. Definitely one we'll be listening to often.

Album Description
When a musician sets out to consciously explore Americana roots music, the results are generally, at the least, inconsistent, if not disastrous. Scholarly posturing and research coupled with technique and skill only get one so far; without sincerity or passion, the musical experiment often ends up sounding dull and lifeless, an exercise more than an expression
And that is precisely what makes the second release from Orange County, CA-based musician Kenny Jacobson, Take Everything I Ever Wanted, that much more remarkable. Kenny was born and raised in Southern California, and like ever kid who came of age in the eighties from that area, he spent his formative years performing with various garage-punk bands, emulating Social Distortion and Black Flag, not Merle Haggard and Buck Owens; yet somewhere along the way, whether it was in Utah, Peru, Mexico or some place in-between, as Kenny continued to write and perform music, he developed a fascination with Americana, and it was just a matter of time before those influences made their way into his music.
Granted, this is no honky-tonk record from Bakersfield, but those influences work nicely alongside Ryan Adams, Neil Young and Ellis Paul, as Kenny seeks to come to terms with loves he has left, and love that has left him. Yes, Kenny may be grappling with some demons from the past, but they are exorcised beautifully over the course of the CD's eleven tracks. It opens with the poignant "Love You More," where gently strummed guitars and pedal-steel shuffle along to tell a Dylan-esque tale where, once again, the "good guy" loses; "Nashville," "Least of All Me" and "Licking My Wounds" mine similar territory, blending accordions and mandolins with more traditional instrumentation as Kenny's sense of ironic justice keeps you from feeling too sorry for his protagonists.
But Kenny's music is far from depressing, for even when at his most forlorn, there is a hope that radiates from within, as if through the simple act of singing these songs, all will be made well. Besides, despite the music's generally solemn subject matter, the arrangements are quite upbeat, whether it's the raucous true-to-form murder-ballad "Never To Die," or the horn-drenched "Hallelujah," which owes much more to the Stax catalog than Ralph Stanley (not to mention that it features the horn section of Save Ferris!).
Ultimately, though, it is Kenny's love of American roots music--of playing it, of writing it, of living itthat shines though on Take Everything I Ever Wanted. He's done his homework and learned the traditions, but, like the outlaws who have obviously inspired him, Kenny knows that, in the end, without heart, you're truly hopeless.
