Renowned naturalist and sound designer Dr. Bernie Krause has traveled the world capturing the soundscapes of exotic natural environments. Dr. Krause began his groundbreaking work in bioacoustics and environmental recording in the late 1960's, and much of his work has been accomplished with techniques and technologies that he personally developed. His "In A Wild Sanctuary" (1970) recording earned a place in history as being the first recording to use environmental sounds as both a central component of orchestration and as a statement about the environment.
Dr. Krause's diverse achievements include 10 recordings for The Nature Company that have enjoyed over $24 million in gross sales over a period of 6 years. Development of the audio technology innovation known as the Intelligent Show System (for public exhibitions and installations), and his Music and Word Series of spoken word documents that include "Ishi - The Last Yahi." Dr. Krause recently published the book "Wild Soundscapes" (2002) that includes a full-length CD featuring a sampling of natural sounds.
Product Description
One of the finest bio-acoustic naturalists working today, Ruth Happel hiked alone to an isolated spot in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York one spring to record this spring chorus. Far from traffic, human habitation and aircraft, she camped and recorded for many nights near a large pond colonized primarily by loons and peepers, patiently awaiting the right confluence of events before settling down to her elegant and rewarding task of capturing the enchanted moment on tape. Recounting the mist over the water at dawn, she tells of the different ways loon voices echo and blend with the rhythm of the peepers as they each establish and share vocal territory.
LOONS of ECHO POND. As part of the mysterious spring chorus, loons and peepers of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York enchant us as we listen to the biophony of this rare habitat. Once these enigmatic sounds are heard, they are never forgotten.

Album Description
Ruth Happel is one of the finest bio-acoustic naturalists working today. Early one spring, she hiked alone for several days until she located one of the few isolated spots in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York far from traffic, human habitation, and aircraft. For many nights she camped near the side of a large pond, inhabited by loons and peepers, patiently waiting for the right confluence of events before settling down to her elegant and rewarding work.Ruth switched on her recorder and just lay quietly on the ground, unmoving for hours at a time and capturing the enchantment of that moment and place. Recounting the mist over the water at dawn, she tells of the different ways the loon voices echo and blend with the rhythm of the peepers, as they each establish and share vocal territory. When she speaks of this moment, her whole being is transformed. Her voice changes and her body language becomes relaxed and fluid. To know her is to know one ext! raordinary human who clearly grasps what it is to be intimately linked to that which is natural. This composition has captured every nuance.

Where are the Loons?.......2005-07-27
This CD is one of the best I've heard!.......2000-04-26
It's hard to find good, quality CDs that really capture the sound and feel of the outdoors, and Loons of Echo Pond does this very admirably.
I grew up in Maine and enjoy recordings from the Northeast in particular, and this CD captures my summer evenings as a child perfectly. I feel as if I am instantly transported back to the woods of my youth.
The CD is a great mix in two tracks, yet the two tracks are not so different that it is disruptive when it switches from one to the other. There is the general background sound of peeper frogs (my favorite sound, which I was all too delighted was featured on this album), wild birds, and other animals. Then the haunting song of the loon echoes out over the lake and the effect is captivating. After a time there is a light rainshower, and the listener is not overpowered by the sound of plinking water droplets. (It seems that all too often nature recordings feature running water as the main focus, which is distracting.) The light rain patters on the leaves and the animals rejoice.
I assure you that if you obtain this album, you will feel as if you are transported to a shady glade near a pond, and you will truly enjoy it. I play it at work during the day to keep me focused and lift my spirits, my coworkers are always stopping by to see what the wonderful noise is about.
Remarkable sound portrait of the northern wilderness.......2000-03-25
Be aware that this is not a "relaxation" CD (although, depending on your mood, you may find it relaxing). There is a lot happening here, and you may be surprised upon repeated playings how many new voices emerge from the chorus. Frogs, woodpeckers, and even the low-pitched drumming of a ruffed grouse (a sound you will probably feel more than hear, when you first do sense it) are just a few of the other sounds included. Happel is not simply striving to recreate a soundscape as it actually occurred, but more accurately wishes to suggest the mood of the place. This disc accomplishes that admirably.
Although the disc is about an hour long, the actual soundscape apparently runs about 30 minutes, and is repeated on the CD to give the full hour-long running time. It's too bad there isn't more material included so this repetition could have been avoided...you can never have too much of a good thing.
If you enjoy this disc, you can hear more of Happel's work on "Desert Solitudes" (soundscapes from the American southwest) and "A Month in the Brazilian Rainforest" (a series of four separate CDs on the Rykodisc label, documenting the sounds of Brazilian Amazonia). As of this writing, these titles are also available from amazon.com.
Trivia note for birders: the most recent pressings of this disc show a red-throated loon on the cover, but the loons heard on the CD are common loons, a different species.
