5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-01

Polychoral music-music written for several groups of musicians separated spatially-was not peculiar to Venice, but it was associated with the Basilica of San Marco and ceremonial events in the Venetian cultural calendar.
Chordal writing reached its peak in the polychoral works of Giovanni Gabrieli(1555-1612), the principal church composer in Italy of the progressive development. He not only increased the number of choirs to four and the total pitch range to over four octaves, but also juxtaposed passages of conventional rhythm with strikingly jagged suncopated motifs. These dramatic contrasts were further intensified by occasional chromatic harmony and unusual dissonances and, more significantly, by the use of instruments that alternated or combined with the voices. All of these traits are well demonstrated in the music on disc 1 of this set. His music is wonderfully exciting!!!!
Upon his death, Monteverdi succeeded him, and took his own direction musically; much different from Gabrielli. It is not just that their styles are different, but the instrumentation is much different as you will hear upon listening to disc 2.
Two subsequent directors of music represented here are Legrenzi and Lotti, both primarily opera composers.
Vivaldi had no direct connection with the basililca; he worked at the 'Pieta', and his motet 'Clarae stellae' was written for a 'Signora Gertruda, a singer who sang at the Pieta. This is one of the most attractive pieces on disc 2, and is often recorded by countertenors (altos)but on this disc is sung by Randi Stene, mezzo soprano, who sings it quite well. Andreas Scholl has recorded this, and I do personally prefer Scholl's countertenor quality for this particular piece.
Monteverdi's 'Currite populi' is another favorite of mine, and its excellently performed herein.
There is just so much to enjoy on these two discs for the early music lover. The instruments are very skillfully played and the styles of the various composers are adhered to all the time. The balance between the voices and the instruments is perfect as one might expect from Parrott's performers. The soloists: Emily van Evera (soprano), Randi Stene (mezzo) and Jeffrey Thomas (tenor) all sang with the correct emotional investment. Certainly worth listening to!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review .......2007-01-09

Venetian Church Music?....never thought I'd be listening to that, anyway this music is for those who seek it out, If thats not you this probably won't interest you (but you can try some renaissance/baroque experimental listening to see if you'd like it!). If your into this though, this is a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional tone quality.......2006-03-28

When I purchased this recording, I had not yet had the pleasure of owning an Andrew Parrott/Taverner Consort recording. I was so impressed! Andrew really excercises an understanding of this genre, an understanding that I haven't often seen. In particular I was quite pleased with this rendintion of Gabrieli's "In ecclesiis" (although the Bass, I don't know his name, is too lacking in volume). Other than that, I just adore this CD set. I also recommend Andrew Parrot for anything predating Bach (*not including Bach!). There is a 5 CD of particular interest and quality called "From Monteverdi to Vivaldi" by this same ensemble that you might consider purchasing instead of this set (almost exact same price, and one of the CDs- the better of the two in this set- is included in the 5CD set).

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Andrew Parrott.......2005-08-04

Who else but Andrew Parrott?! The fabulous adventurer in the field of early music, Parrott has time and again unearthed unknown masterpieces, shedding light on their original luster through a keen sense of the historical settings, employment of the proper historic instruments & period vocal style, and his own inspired musicianship. Throughout the 2nd half of the 20th century music lovers like me knew the works of Gabrieli through the appropriations by well-meaning ensembles of modern brass instruments: Chicago Symphony Brass, Canadian Brass, etc. Parrott has been the first to perform and record many of these works with early 17th century instruments, providing a restored sonic image for the 21st century connoisseur. Bravo! Encore, please!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous introduction to Venetian sacred music.......2003-07-24

This fantastic collection of music is probably one of the best introductions to Venetian Baroque (early to late) on offer.
The first disc, devoted to Giovanni Gabrieli, is nothing short of amazing. Cornetts, Baroque violins, tenor cornetts, sackbuts and multiple organs (try the first track - the huge Dulcis Jesu patris imago à 20 voci) can be heard on this disc and they are all played with great panache, style and, most importantly, expression. I bought both of these discs when they were issued on EMI Reflex over ten years ago - and I have never stopped loving these magnificent and colourful performances.

If you want only one recording of Giovanni Gabrieli's music - then this might be the one for you! The other might be the Gabrieli Consort's 'A Venetian Coronation'? (if you want two Gabrieli recordings in your collection!)

The second disc contains a very tasty selection of music by Legrenzi, Monteverdi, Vivaldi and, again, Giovanni Gabrieli (the star of the show!).

If you want to know what 8 cornetts and 16 sackbuts sound like - then this is the place to go! The singing and playing from all concerned is excellent.

I love this CD and I bought this reissue because my old EMI CDs were getting a bit old!

5 out of 5 stars "It's a 74-minute Train Wreck".......2007-03-21

When I was in high school, I lifted weights in my parents basement for 2 hours every other day. This album was the workout soundtrack for 11th and 12th grade. It's the perfect music to try and punch yourself out to. By the end of the last song, "Just Like You", I would feel spent, rabid. Amazed that Hank still had some left at the end of that relentless 10 minute song. I can't hear any song of this album to this day without feeling that adversarial thrill of those cast-iron afternoons of my youth.

I'm 32 now, still work out seriously with weights, and listen to Hank quite often.

Hank taught me thru this album to be strong, to be self-defined as a person, to be my own person and believe in myself, to stand up and be unafraid. Who else could send a message like that, AND HAVE IT BE COOL?? Hank was like your guidance counselor, telling you to be positive and not to do drugs, but in way that was intense and interesting and made you want to go out and push the envelope with a dangerous mind.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST ROLLINS ALBUM!!.......2007-03-09

This is in my opinion the best ROLLINS BAND album. Full of anger and seething with hatred it literally begs you to punch something. LOW SELF OPINION is a great song and even seems to have a positive message from ol' Hank. My favorite though is BLUES JAM! It has some of the coolest lines in it and some REALLY fierce music. I saw ROLLINS BAND a few times in the 90's and man, they were a force to be reckoned with. This album is a must have for fans of heavy alternative music.

5 out of 5 stars Now Swimming in the Mainstream.......2007-01-06

Those who loved the Rollins Band before this release knew one thing, "This was going to put the band on the map." And it did.

Lollapalooza. Major airplay. Thousands of jocks in cars bought by their parents pumping out the jams. It was a nightmare, yet oddly redeeming. Here was a band we always knew rocked, and now the masses were knowing it, too.

There's really not a loser on here. It's the perfect thing to listen to when depressed or angry beyond belief. It will fill you with hope, rage and lust. It's Nietschze put to music, and if you think that sounds incredible -- it is.

"The End of Silence" is just that. It was the end of the silence and the beginning of the rage. If you haven't listened to this yet, you haven't lived.

4 out of 5 stars High Energy power music.......2006-11-01

I agree with the reviewer who said this is like harder King Crimson (who rule themselves). Chris Haskett on guitar is a METALLIC VIRTUOSO, pure and simple. Cain and Weiss on drums and bass are excellent, the power trio just RIPS it up on this, the best of Rollins' solo efforts. This is power music, why does it make my hands turn into fists?? I always thought the band should have done some more of the faster paced numbers, as opposed to the bone crushing stuff, but its all good. This is a good one to put on before (or after) you have to listen to a bunch of your co-workers whine about this or that, too bad Mr. Rollins couldn't come in and give them a piece of his mind!!

5 out of 5 stars The Good Ol' Bad Days.......2006-07-11

I hope the rock world doesn't forget what a lightning bolt this album was "back in the day." Released a little after Nirvana's _Nevermind_ and Soundgarden's _Badmotorfinger_, it was just about as much a defining piece of the "grunge" movement as these two classics. It was also Rollins's first money-maker, as it was put out by a major label, giving he and his band the production values that they had always lacked in the indie world.

For these reasons, this puts _The End of Silence_ at a thrilling precipice, the one between Rollins's manic catharsis of his demons and his success to come. In a few words, Rollins's paranoia and rage never sounded as genuine after this. He put out a few decent albums after this (those which have the same nucleus as this version of the band--Sim Cain and Chris Haskett: _Weight_ and _Come in and Burn_), but he never sounded as RAW again. And punk underground values being what they are and were, this is the best-recorded document of the truly wild Rollins.

This is also when his band got absolutely tight, going between intense riff-rockers like "Grip" and mind-melting jams like the incomparably angry and schizoid "Obscene." The band only got better musically from here, as evidenced on the previously-mentioned releases (and the band is the main reason to listen to the latter-day Rollins before he fired his original players). Here, on _The End of Silence_, though, we have the complete emergence of a world-class "rage rock" act, full of monstrous chops and full-tilt out-of-control angst on Rollins's part.

So this was the more or less plain-spoken classic of the beginning of the grunge era. Where Kurdt used Rimbaudian poetic indirection and Chris Cornell & Co. opted for Sabbathy apocalypse, Rollins just came out and screamed about what frustrated him ("I'm so confused/ Can't find the line/ Between what I use and abuse"--"Obscene"). He continues this approach often to this day, but it's hard to believe it any longer. It probably just keeps him in his penthouse for another year to put out an album where he's toeing that line. I can still listen to _The End of Silence_ and believe that he's preaching the angry blues here to save his life. Since the music matches this sentiment from start to finish, it felt revolutionary in '91. Now, well, it's indispensable for those times when you just gotta punch a wall, right up there with _Master of Puppets_ and precious few other heavy albums.

Psychedelic Furs lost their way hopelessly after the commercial high point of Mirror Moves (1984). Here Richard Butler rebuilds lost credibility with a creative new guitarist, Richard Fortus, and a sound more atuned to early Furs than the pop puppets they became. "Am I Wrong" is a compelling first single, and Butler's renewed confidence shines through on the superb "Change In The Weather." --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not brilliant, not bad 3.5 out of 5.......2006-11-11

I have been listening to the Psychedlic Furs for about 25 years now, and only came across Love Spit Love after their brief incarnation had been and gone. This is a good album, although I would recommend Trysome Eatone over this. Stand-out songs are "Am I Wrong", "Codeine" and "More" - some of the other tracks seem to be trying too hard to be quirky. Having said that, anyone who is a fan of Richard Butler's unique vocal style and unusual, but often moving, lyrics (and I am one of those) will enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great albums of the 1990's.......2006-07-10

Richard Butler left his milleu of the "beautiful chaos" New Wave of the Psychedelic Furs and delved into a more resonant and less synthetic sound with this, the premiere album of Love Spit Love. It begins with a sonic assault of guitars and drums with "Seventeen" and ends with the somber, thrumming and dream-like "More" and inbetween these songs are more truly beautiful, sorrowful, and wonderful songs than anything Richard Butler has done before. Songs like "Green", "Half a Life", "Change in the Weather" and "Superman" are all incredibly evocative, sometimes louder and sometimes softer but all are powerful. The highlights of the album lie with the one hit yielded from the album "Am I Wrong", which is a song which digs deep into regret and melancholy and romance and the lyrical and musical brilliance of "Codeine". This album is very reminiscent of the works of another truly great band R.E.M., and I can't help thinking that some of the inspiration for this album are from R.E.M. songs. Just looking at the titles of some of the songs: "Superman", "Green" and "Wake Up" (R.E.M. having a song called "Get Up"). Maybe it's just coincidence, but one way or the other, this is one of the best albums of the 1990's and is a must-have for any Richard Butler fan.

4 out of 5 stars Am I wrong? NO!.......2005-07-10

Simply said, this is a great album. With some strong influence from his early band, Psychedlic Furs, Richard Butlter rocks hard as probably one of the best frontmen of the 80's.

3 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) consistent, but never takes flight.......2005-07-08

Richard Fortus (later to join Guns N Roses) replaces John Ashton on lead guitar, and, for some reason (probably legal or contractual), the band changes its name from "The Psychedelic Furs" to "Love Spit Love." Is Fortus an improvement? It's hard to say, but the first Love Spit Love album is not a heck of alot different than the Furs last ("World Outside"), and that's just fine.

This album maintains a certain consistency throughout. All of the songs are basically of similar quality, my favorites being "Superman," "Half A Life," "Am I Wrong," and "Green," but I could just as easily have named another four. And that's the problem. None of the tracks really distinguishes itself from the others, and, after about the 8th song, one wonders when it's going to end. Alot of the tracks meander on for about a minute too long, but, to repeat, the entire album is consistently decent. If I were to rate each song individually, I might give most 4 stars and a few three, but here, the sum of the parts are greater than the whole.

I recommend this album to all fans of the Butler brothers' former band, just don't expect another "India" or "Ghost In You."

5 out of 5 stars Richard Butler at his best.......2004-09-05

For fans of eighties music, or those who simply enjoy finely crafted, lush sounds, the debut CD by Love Spit Love is a great choice.

I've been a long-time fan of the Psychedelic Furs, (my favorite Furs CDs are Forever Now and Mirror Moves). Some of the tracks on this disc are uneven, but I would consider the song "Am I Wrong?" as strong as anything that the Furs put out. I prefer the first Love Spit Love CD to the second one...so if you are only going to pick up one, I'd recommend starting here.

5 out of 5 stars John Waite's best solo album so far... (An Aussie's opinion).......2006-03-07

Being in the 40-something age bracket, I've liked John Waite since his days with The Babys but really only grew to LOVE him in the 80's when he went solo with "missing you". It would be really hard to pick my favourite JW song but this album is definitely my favourite. Being an Aussie, I have to order all my JW music via the internet and I envy you guys in the US. Some day I plan to get there just to see the amazing JW in real life. My favourite song on this CD would be "Price of my Tears" but there's so many brilliant songs on this CD. It's hard to describe the effect his voice has on me but it's like being taken to a different place. No one else has that effect on me! As our Aussie 'Molly' Meldrum says, "Do yourself a favour" and buy this CD!...and try all the others while you're at it!! There will never be anyone who moves me like John Waite.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted album.......2003-05-24

I've been a fan of John Waite for a long time. This is my favorite solo album by far. And as usual, artists reveal their greatest works from the pits of emotional despair. John is no exception. "Downtown", "Price of My Tears", "The Glittering Prize" reveal some of this despair. I am also very impressed with how he took a classic song like Bill Withers' "Aint no Sunshine when She's Gone" and made it his own. What a beautiful cover version. I even like the cover of "I'm SO Lonesome I could Cry" by Hank Williams. Just John's voice and a Dobro. When John teams up with the likes of Glen Burtnik and Mark Spiro, he can't make a bad song. If this album were vinyl, I would have worn a groove in it long ago. Very classy. Excellent album start to finish. And you can't say that about many albums these days.

2 out of 5 stars John Waite Temple Bar.......2002-01-09

I can't tell you how happy I was to finally find Temple Bar!!! I haven't stopped listening to this CD! It's a shame that the record company at the time didn't promote it properly. This CD is simply AWESOME! There isn't a bad song on it, this is definately John Waite at his best.

2 out of 5 stars Staid. Dour. Unnecessary........2007-03-14

OK Rollins devotees, get your mouse fingers ready to give this review a negative vote!

Circa '94 Rollins was a demi god so I bought this ablum - what a waste of my hard earned!

Rollins is blessed with a somewhat evocative voice and a set of biceps that, like Pete Steele, got the ladies in a flutter. And he's able to speak intelligently which is always a bonus. But he also has a downside - a very pessimistic view of things that permeates this record to it's core. He also has virtually no ability to pen much of a musical melody. His almost conversational style of lyric delivery borders on rapping (see track 4 - Civilised). He also, at least on this record, has too much emphasis on his vox and the band aren't up far enough in the mix.

And really there's no point trying to outweigh the bad here with the good because there is almost no good. There are some tasty bass lines here but that's about it. Too much hi-hat drumming, too much 'done me wrong' whining and while this perhaps caught some attention from the 90's slacker generation the fact that this and all subsequent Rollins Band albums stiffed is a pretty fair indication of how little rapport with his audience Henry had. Really, anybody who scored THAT much spin doctoring should of been selling millions.

As for some more musically specific reasons not to buy this. How about the loose, morbid song structurs. On almost every track. Or the boring arrangements. They've used a bit of jumping around (from boring motif to boring motif) to stop the listener getting comfortable since then they'd realise that there were no real chords or hooks to sustain interest in the songs main musical theme. Or that there is hardly a decent riff on the whole thing (except Wrong Man) and it's the bass that drives the songs - that's when they are being driven at all. Perhaps if you could extract the lyrics here and glue them onto a Korn album you'd have a perfectly acceptable nu-metal album. But - as I write in 2007 - not even Korn are so one dimensional as the collection of lyrical concerns here addressed.

No wonder ol' Henry has since concentrated on his spoken word tours where he is apparently a far more engaging listen. And it's probably a hell of a lot cheaper than taking a band out on tour.

OK, you can give that negative vote now.....

5 out of 5 stars Hanks Takes.......2006-11-15

This is one of the best Rollins albums. This is the culmination of Melvin Gibbs stellar bass playing, "sugar" Sim Cain on the skins, Chris Haskett on the 6 string thing and Henry Rollins- throat. Perhaps his best lineup to date- although his current lineup is really good. Rollins destroys all comers on this one and calls out gun toting gangster wannabes on the powerful "Civilized" - getting your mind off some guys record, he makes his money off fools like you, singing about killing like it ain't no thing, but you do the time when you're living for real, paying his way from your death row cell, you're the last one to see you got sold out! Disconnect is another great track with a consatnt groove going on, the video has Henry recalling a Deniro-like Taxi role- classic. The version of this disc to grab is the remastered one with 4 bonus live tracks all from this album. The highlight of the live tracks would be "liar" played in England with Henry agging on the British crowd as they chant back at him- "you can chant all you want and all your voices put together aren't as loud as mine" "you know all those things I've said about you all these years- about your shi&&y music and your shi^^y food...I'm sorry" "I'm the one who makes you forget this shi&&y little rainy country you live in" And check out Melvin Gibss bass lines on the live "Civilized"- classic. Go to [...]to grab this version.

4 out of 5 stars rollins' finest moment, post Black Flag.......2005-08-06

I'm not much of a fan of the cottage industry known as Henry Rollins, inc., but "Weight" has to be the musclebound ex-Black Flag singer's best work after Black Flag, of course.
What makes this Rollins Band album work so well is the players and their chemistry. The lineup has since changed, but this incarnation of the band is solid and absolutely powerful. The addition of bassist Melvin Gibbs gives the band a fluid, jazzy rhythm foundation that locks in well with Sim Cain's drumming, and Chris Haskett lets loose with some of his best guitar playing. Haskett is a tasteful player who utilizes space and minimal amounts of notes for maximum impact, ala David Gilmour, which I suppose wouldn't be an altogether unfathomable comparison. The grooves that the band creates almost comes close to upstaging its namesake at times, but Rollins still has plenty to shout about. There are only a few weak(er) tracks here--"Tired," "Step Back" and "Shine," which seems as if Rollins is preaching a bit too much in the latter. These tracks are weaker, lyrically, than what is expected from such a poetic lyricist as Rollins. Anger is the primary emotion Rollins is about in his lyrics, but he conveys it pretty well on "Weight." Songs like "Disconnect" and "Civilized" effectively communicate Rollins' anger and feelings of hatred toward those who have the misfortune of getting on his bad side.

5 out of 5 stars One of my faves.......2006-03-22

Baby animals eponimous CD was (and is) one of my favorite CDs from the early '90s. From the single (and not a bad video, either)"Painless" through the other ten tracks, I like every single song on this album; I can't say that about more than 15 or 20 other Albums I own. Anyone looking for good pop with a hard rock edge should be happy with this album.

5 out of 5 stars I just heard this song on the radio.......2005-07-08

Jeez, 'A music fan'. Are you bagging the band, or Australia? I'm not a particularly patriotic guy, but that comment about our being 'limited to a narrow range of topics by the limited range of lifestyles available due to the contrains of the country's environment' was rather offensive if you ask me. The 'Baby Animals' rock hard.

5 out of 5 stars This Band Rocks!!!And Suzie Is Pretty HOT Too!!!.......2005-04-26

I just love this album which was recorded back in 1991 and still sounds as frseh today as it was back then. Good Hard Rock albums are hard to find and this one is a gem. Suzie DeMarchi belts out such classics as "One Word" and "Early warning" with her unique hard hitting vocal style and she is backed by heavily overdriven guitars on these two tracks. This album proves that Rock is indeed Eternal and Timeless.

1 out of 5 stars Childhood pomp, now sounds absurd, typical Aussie.......2004-07-13

For those who do not know about music from Australia, this album in a sense typifies it all. Artists generally and especially female ones in Australia are limited to a narrow range of topics by the limited range of lifestyles available due to the contrains of the country's environment, and the sneering pseudo-macho posturer has dominated in Australia like nowhere else ever since Suzi Quatro rose to fame.

Suzi DeMarchi, a well-established singer then, typifies this image with her full-cry vocals on this album that are at least more pleasant than, say, Suzi Quatro or Alanis Morrisette on "Jagged Little Pill". However, there is nothing to distinguish the music on "Baby Animals" from generic loud hair metal except that it is sang by a supposedly sexy woman. The songs, to say the least, show no variation from fast-tempo rockers, and there is no hint of melody except for the solos by guitarist David Leslie, which are no different from those of Slash or Angus Young.

To say the least, the overamplified pomp of "Baby Animals" could only have come from 1991, when its hyper-catchy character appealed to me and I felt I could sensibly sing along to every tune that was played on radio yearning for classic rock. Hard rock sang by a woman was the perfect bill, especially with ordinary avenues for female musicians ruled out by environmental contraints. However, the sound today is absurdly dated because of the hair-metal-style production, which overamplified the guitars and bass to create headache-producing noise rather than any kind of emotion, plus a pompous drum sound that stands in a straight line between "Hysteria" and "Nevermind". This is seen at its worst on the Australian hit power ballads "Rush You" and "One Word". both of which are at best imitation Pat Benatar.

Basically, this music is the epitomy of Australia: pseudo-macho rock that copies the most easily remembered parts of foreign rock bands.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Rock Fans Need This Album!.......2004-03-18

When i first picked up this album i thought it was a greatest hits! Then to find out that they only made 2 albums, and this was the debut album only made me rush to hear there second, which disapointed me :(

This album is terrific! And i hope the rumors about this band getting back together are true! Suzi Demachi and the group really rocks!

Dont think that women can not rock and make great albums and not just a couple of songs, because this album is a must have.... i notice Shaved And Dangerous is higher rated... but ignore that, this is a must have album for hard rockers! And she will become one of your favorite female rockers! Take my word on it! The whole album rocks and look at the price???? your getting a bargin!!!!!!

The freaky brainchild of Michael Ivey, Basehead's music is deep semiotics disguised as slacker hip-hop. On his debut album, Ivey mumbles through songs about heartbreak, the meaning of life, and beer (several years before Beck, mind you) over a foundation of funky backbeats, one-note guitar grooves and scratchy lo-fi samples. Cleverly constructed skits woven throughout the songs add musical texture and layers of meaning: a changing radio dial mood-swings "Not Over You" from pretty and melancholic to comical, while the conversation that bookENDs "Ode to My Favorite Beer" turns it into a simultaneous examination of love, alcoholism and the creative process. Being African-American in Washington, D.C. has apparently given Ivey much to think about, as this album illustrates. --Suzanne McElfresh

5 out of 5 stars Get the EMIGRE version, not the IMAGO version...if you can find it!.......2006-10-25

Get the original, deleted version of this album on Emigre Records. It was released months (maybe a year?) earlier on the Emigre label (a record label started by a font/typeface graphic design magazine of all things!) The original version of the album had samples that were deemed illegal by The Powers That Be, and several tracks had to be revamped a bit, one or two of them were changed VERY noticeably. Plus, the design and packaging was way better on the Emigre version, too. You can tell the difference immediately if you pull out the booklet: the Emigre version is on matte/rough paper with a different foldout...and the Imago one is glossy and slick to the touch. Don't get me wrong, the Imago version still rules...but...I prefer the original version, the way Mr. Ivey intended it. Oh, plus--do yerself a favor and pick up the "2000 B.C." CDsingle: the two 'remixes' (actually an alternate version and a cool live-ish funk version) are great, as is the bonus track "Can It Be?" Sweet stuff.

4 out of 5 stars basehead review.......2004-02-29

One reviewer was right on in pointing out that this album came out years before Beck blew up. For those of you that haven't heard this yet, this album is filled with relaxed breakbeats, jangly guitars and singing about breaking up, drinking, bad hair, and the hope of a brand new day. The intro and outro tracks are funny as hell, and the samples are as much a part of the music as the vocals. They aren't thrown in just to spice up the music, they tell part of the story. This is a very easy album to get into, and I do believe that fans of any genre can listen to this and appreciate it. It's a shame that this album is relatively obscure, almost NEVER getting any radio play other than on the occasional college station. Help this talented man out and buy this album. I heard that he's a religious man now, but who knows...maybe with enough interest, he'll convert back to the dark side of Basehead.

5 out of 5 stars A lazy, laid back classic.......2002-12-25

Take with maximum pharms, folks. This understated masterpiece is like the first "Friday;" massively blissed out, unassuming, and takes the world by storm. There has not been a CD like it since. Off-Kilter vocals, gently strummed guitars, and hillarious sample all drift in and out of consciousness. Thing is, this CD is a decade old, and every time I hear it, I am left thinking that it is still fresher than most of the music being released today. Dieu merci for the small labels.

3 out of 5 stars three and 78/100th of a star..........2002-07-06

Basehead is a hip hop band that always avoided the cliches. "Alive" musicans,a decidedly laid back groove and a wry sense of humor sets this band (and cd) apart from most others. Play With Toys has got crooked soul and originality in spades. It makes you wish that more hip hop artists had the ability to ween themselves off of the formula that it takes to become Big Time(hey...the artistry is what counts). As is,few have heard of this band but I'd rank this album (and it's less compelling follow up Not In Kansas Anymore) among the best hip hop/rap albums I've ever heard. The second side (sorry,I had the cassette first) is weaker than the first but who cares. This is a fine album. The masses may believe that Ja Rules but anyone who loves music knows that Basehead was better...One of the best hip hop albums to date.

5 out of 5 stars Unknown, Under-rated, Under Appreciated.......2001-09-15

The first time I bought this album... it was on audio cassette. I had no idea who Basehead were... I was just browsing through a record store looking for something NEW (which in corporate music america is sometimes so hard to do) and I saw this cassette jacket with a beer bottle on front. I liked the song titles, so I bought it.

The first track, the first time I listened to it... was really weird. Sounded like some crappy country band singing some stupid song.. and I was just about to toss the cassette out my window when I started listening to the words... and realized it was rather funny.

Then, when track two opened up with jazzy beat and somber, almost spoken lyrics,... I loved it. I have listened to this album hundreds of times... it is one of the most underrated pieces of urban music of its time. Everybody who I knew, after I introduced them to Basehead, became instant fans also. Where is this band?? They are intense, and I can't believe that they are not more popular.

This Cd never comes out of the player. I had it since the day it was released and it is a bit scatched, so i am looking for a new one. Every song is top notch, from the opening My world to the heart felt Miles Away Hand on the Trigger has such a groove that you can find yourself playing 3 or 4 times over. I really wish it got more exposure, but I love the fact that one of my truly favrouite cds is out of print.

4 out of 5 stars A great but underappreciated album of solid rock music........2004-04-22

This was a fine album of music that was better than The Rolling Stones "Voodoo Lounge" LP. Unfortunately, most American rock fans did not find out about it. Only the sad state of American radio can be blamed for this album's lack of exposure to the millions of rock music listeners across America. This is why I hate bands like Wheezer and The Presidents of the United States of America, who received loads of air-play during the 90's while the music of Great White was over-looked. Those cheesy pop rock knockoffs can't measure up to Great White. Please do yourself a favor and purchase this album. It Rocks!

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-18

This album is freakin increadible. i love it and i just got it today!!! no lie!! i strongly believe that this could be Great White's best album to date!! if you read in another reviewers review that Great White gets softer i don't know where he got the idea. there are only 3 slower songs ( they are great ) the rest are alot harder rock and others have to great blues sound and just freakin good rock'n roll!!for some reason this album didn't get anywhere and it is already out of print.( don't ask me why ) and it is also very hard to find. rarely will someone sell it on ebay and i haven't found another place to get it cept here. you will probably have to get it from someone else throught amazon but it is worth it. put it this way. I payed 40 bucks for this cd sealed and it was worth every penny. trust me. i am a die hard Great White fan and i am 14. i know good music when i hear it , not punk, not rap, not hip hop, nothin but good rock.so don't waste anymore time reading reviews and buy it. also Mark Kendall also shows off some of his great talent on this album!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Let it Rock, Rocks!!.......2003-10-24

If you love good blues based rock'n'roll, this is a disc for you. There is a good reason Great White has endured. They continue to put out excellent music! "Let it Rock" is great collection of rockers with a taste of the mellow, for balance. This disc slipped under the radar, but is certainly some of GW's best work. If you liked their Once Bitten album, you will dig this one for sure. Long live Great White!!

It's Henry Rollins as standup comedian! Airport gags and all! He's good at it, too, and this two-disc "talking record" is far more enlightening and entertaining than his angry poetry or his hard-rock histrionics. After all, how many times can he scream about his pain before we all get a little numb? On The Boxed Life (which refers to an endless string of hotel rooms, dressing rooms, and waiting rooms on the road), Rollins eases up and lets fans in on the joke--taking the happy campers in the live audience on hilarious side trips through his teenage career in animal husbandry ("Strength"), his tortured sense of humor ("Funny Guy"), and his low-down life in countless bars ("Blues"). --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Henry Rollins - The Thinking Persons Entertainment.......2007-01-10

Henry Rollins nails it again! Rollins in all of his varied rolls has been a part of my life since the early 80s. From the hard hitting punk vocals of the Band Black Flag, to his poignant angst ridden prose that hit so hard in early adulthood, to these spoken word cds that speak of all the situations that aggravate and amuse us all - he is it!

As the thinking persons alternative to many of these showboating ignoramuses in the spotlight today - this is a must have.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but for fanatics........2004-04-19

I'm really a fan of "Rollins" the musician, and even "Rollins" the author, but this I almost never listen to. The first few listens it was interesting to get his perspective on things, and I like his delivery, but it's just not that great. Also, though some of it is humorous, it's far from being stand-up, which I knew it wasn't anyway. I've even seen him do this show in person, and I still don't care for it much. I'm sure the biggest of fans will dig it, but I'd suggest sticking to his music. It's got alot more "Weight".

1 out of 5 stars Rollins is a moron.......2004-01-22

Henry Rollins is the biggest no talent
muscle head moron in the entertainment world.
He has nothing to say. I wish in one of his spoken
word albums he would talk about how much better
Black Flag was before he was in the band.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rollins Spoken Word.......2003-10-07

This is in my opinion the BEST Henry Rollins spoken word album out there. I love his music, but it is also great to hear him loosen up and just tell jokes. I really like this album because he tells real life stories and talks about stuff that happened on the road. Henry Rollins has a great gift for comedy and is a talented man all around. My favorite bits on the album are the ones called Funny Guy, the Condom bit, and the two bits on Strength. If you love Rollins and want a great spoken word album, do not hesitate to buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars A More Efficient Machine.......2003-06-04

In an attempt to help readers decide whether to actually buy this product, I'll refrain from simply repeating what everyone else has already said. Instead, I shall attempt to fill in the blanks left my my fellow reviewers.

Firstly, the recording quality (though a marked improvement over previous offerings) is still poor. It's not as quiet as CDs like Human Butt or Big Ugly Mouth, but it's still full of echo and is definitely not professionally recorded. Don't buy this one expecting hi-fi audio because you'll be disappointed in that respect. That said, you can hear everything properly and this time the crowd's applause doesn't drown out Henry's speech.

In terms of content, this is a good CD. I consider that this is one of the first outings where Henry is really starting to develop a style and rhythym to his performance. Certain topics and aspects prevalent in previous CDs have been abandoned, his sense of comedic timing is getting sharper and some of the stuff he talks about is laugh-out-loud funny. Watch out for the 'Rock Chix' on disc one..

In summary, this one is worth a buy. It's two discs and represents good value. You'll get to hear Rollins finding his groove in this medium now that he has some experirence behind him. While it's not as polished as later offerings, it contains a somewhat raw, gritty character that later offerings don't.

Buy this one after Talk is Cheap, Rollins In The Wry and Think Tank.
