We hear the Shushybye music on the radio and love it. Our son sings the chorus to the theme song all the time, so we decided to buy the CD. Thank you Shushybye Dream Band for your terrific songs. They are a part of our family's daily enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of musical horsepower from a damn good band........2007-06-30

Ringo will go down in musical history as "The least annoying Beatle". We all sort of thought when the fab four quit that Ringo would end up in one of those "Where are they now?" columes in Rolling Stone magazine. No such deal. He proved to be a hell of a musician, a top rate drummer and knows how to always surround himself with the best in the biz. Paul should take some notes. Such was the case with Goodnight Vienna. I love this album!! A first class turn-it-up-loud and blow the f**kin speaker cones out on the floor recording. Ringo had to work a bit trying to find himself a band after the Beatle split but it didnt take long. Goodnight Vienna is a hot 70's post Beatle rocker that plays well in the 21st century. The title cut is a John Lennon contribution that could only have been a Ringo tune. You'll never hear a rock vocalist with no vibrato, projection and range crank it out like Ringo did on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Goodnight Vienna Ringo Starr.......2007-03-18

Good. If you liked him in the Beatles then you would like him in his own band. Some of the songs are cute. I am a music collector and would recommend this to anyone who liked the 60's and 70's.

5 out of 5 stars MUST-HAVE Ringo.......2006-06-17

This album and "Ringo" are required albums for any music library that is going to have Ringo Starr. All the songs on the album are well-made but if I had to choose my top five favorites, they would be
1. Goodnight Vienna
2. Oo-Wee
3. Only You (And You Alone)
4. Snookeroo
5. Call Me (come on now...its kinda 'groovy')

For anyone who wants the best of Ringo Starr, definitely pick this up along with Ringo and Stop and Smell the Roses.

4 out of 5 stars Very very good.......2004-10-13

It's not quite the Ringo album since there are few masterpiece moments, but the overall quality is very high. Most of the songs are a lot of fun. My favourite song is No No song, it's a perfect piece of catchy pop and utilises Ringo's personality briliantly. It also has a great exotic flavour. Only you is a bit like John Lennon's version of Stand By Me, an uptempo folk song with a pop music feel. Easy for me is a haunting ballad with a classical music feel. I love the reprise of the rocking title track where Ringo shouts out "With gusto boys, with gusto!". Other standouts are All by myself, the title track and the beautiful folk ballad Husbands and WIves that is very touching and wouldn't be out of place on a Bob Dylan album. A great 70's pop music album.

4 out of 5 stars With gusto, boys!.......2004-07-08

This was Ringo's fourth solo album. While not as good as his triumphant third album, it still has it's moments. It pretty much follows the "formula" of his third album, by including some songs Ringo wrote, some songs his friends wrote for him and some cover versions of other people's songs. The big hits were "No No Song" and "Only You". The CD version features three bonus tracks. "Back Off Boogaloo" was a Top Ten hit. The strange "Blindman" was the b-side of "Back Off Boogaloo" and was also the title song to a western Ringo starred in. "Six O'Clock" was originally featured on Ringo's third album. This is the extended version that previously only appeared on promo copies of the third album. It runs over a minute longer than the normal version and you can hear Paul McCartney's backing vocals more clearly on it. Recommended to Ringo's fans.

Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it's the music that's the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster "Marian the Librarian," whose love for Preston's character makes her come alive. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Preston) and "'Til There Was You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Cook) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who covered it on their first album. --Dawn Eden

5 out of 5 stars Music Man.......2007-02-09

The original cast recording brings back the memory of the live production I saw which will always be superior, in my opinion, to the movie version. However, the movie was one of the better "reproductions" of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars One of This Country's Finest Musicals Beautifully Re-Mastered.......2006-11-23

THE MUSIC MAN opened on Broadway on December 19, 1957 to rave reviews from the critics, adulations from the captivated audiences, and the beginning of a long run. This wondrous musical is an 'opera' of sorts in that the piece is not a series of songs connected by the usual musical comedy spoken dialogue. Meredith Willson wrote the music and lyrics in such a way that there is not an extraneous note or word that doesn't contribute to the totality of the work.

Despite the multiple reincarnations of this brilliant show both on film and recording, none of them compares to this original cast. Imagine Barbara Cook (lithe, and new) as Marian the Librarian: Cook still reigns as one of our finest voices on the stage and cabaret rooms today. Robert Preston is not only rich in personality he also delivers the immensely complex patter songs with deft authority. And the Buffalo Bills add the multiple barbershop quartet numbers with authentic sound and professionalism.

This musical holds all of the joys and imaginations and longings that we all hold so dear in our memories of how things used to be - and it is so terrific to return to that stage of ecstasy again. This is a must own CD. Grady Harp, November 06

5 out of 5 stars We need a new remaster, nonetheless.......2006-10-22

A very interesting photo on the liner booklet's back cover demonstrates the one real flaw in this otherwise classic recording: it shows Robert Preston at the album sessions singing at two mikes, a fat Neumann with a Capitol flag and a skinny one, probably an AKG. This can only mean Capitol recorded this in simultaneous mono and stereo takes. With all that knob twiddling the balance had to go off, a problem not entirely corrected by the reissue engineer Bob Norberg, whose remasterings of Ol' Blue's Capitol mono output have earned scorn from some Sinatraphiles for their slight fake echo and stereo effects. (He remastered just about every album in the Broadway Angel series; the monos all appear to have the echo and stereo.) I guess we should be happy to have this in any form at all given how the other majors turned it down. Capitol was late and indifferent to the cast album trade, and it only had three hits before making its monumental closing botch of "Follies." However the label approached it it's still a great and exciting score perfectly performed. Who could have imagined a hit musical with a barbershop quartet? And if only all women could sing like Barbara Cook! Who says you can have too much of a good thing?

With the show's fiftieth anniversary coming up (!) now would be a good time for a remaster. (I know, I know, I'm tired of paying repeatedly for the same product too, but this deserves it.) It should include a second disc with the 1959 Capitol documentary LP "And Then I Wrote 'The Music Man'", where Meredith Willson and his wife Rini detail the eight years of trials and rewrites behind the show. Nor would it hurt to have bonuses like Willson's original take on "Till There Was You" (called "Till I Met You," which Fran Warren evidently first sang on "The Big Show") or a few licensed pop balladeers of the day -- and maybe examples like the 70s jingle for the late lamented Oldsmobile ("Oh ho the new Oldsmobile is a -- comin' down the line...."). It must also include Willson's contentious JFK physical fitness tune "Chicken Fat", recorded about the time "The Music Man" was filmed and available only on oddball Web music sites, where Preston yells and grunts himself into an athletic -- passion. (I keep thinking Allan Sherman recorded a full version of his notorious parody "76 Sol Cohens", but I guess he didn't.) The whole thing should end with a live public-radio performance from 1980 or 1981 where Willson led the superb Detroit Concert Band in "76 Trombones" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" -- an apt and brilliant finish.

No, I have not forgotten the Beatles, but I fear neither have their lawyers.

4 out of 5 stars Accept no substitutes!.......2006-08-22

This the best version of "The Music Man" available, especially if you're looking for the Broadway cast. The performances here are all terrific, the recording and mastering are great, and the liner notes are informative and thorough. "The Music Man" is available in several other versions and forms, including other releases of the same original cast recording, but without the good mastering or liner notes found here. My wife and I, hoping to listen to this great show with our kids, first purchased other versions that were easier to find (e.g., on iTunes) and those were major disappointments. Buy this CD (Broadway Classics from Angel) and accept no substitutes.

5 out of 5 stars Preston and Cook are the best ever.......2006-07-15

Yes, the film is a delight, and Shirley Jones is certainly good as Marian. But the original cast album of this wonderful musical remains the best version ever, mostly thanks to Barbara Cook, whose voice was and remains a miracle of rare device to listen to.

For years I thought I was the only person who was in love with her voice, wearing out vinyl LPs of this musical with replaying. Then, in the early 80s I saw Cook in a one woman show in London, and discovered I was part of a fanatical following! The other reviews here on Amazon confirm the truth: there is only one truly great Marian, Madam Librarian.

Watch the movie, which is a terrific adaptation of the stage show, go to professional and amateur revivals of the musical, but buy this recording of the score for repeated listening. There is nothing better.

This was our favorite tape. Used it in the car to get the kids to go to sleep. My son would here it and yell, "No NO I don't wanna go to sleep"... right before he fell asleep. We called it our MAGIC tape. Have to be careful though... can put the driver to sleep as well...

Inspired by 1992's 'Til Their Eyes Shine: The Lullaby Album, an all-female collection of sleepy-time songs for children, Daddies Sing Good Night proves that men are no less tender in nurturing their wee ones. Or at least that's true of these men--including Jesse Winchester, Doc Watson, Peter Rowan, and the late Townes Van Zandt--who wrote the songs for their own offspring, and, in their day jobs, rank among the finest practitioners of folk, country, and bluegrass. In guiding their young charges to dreamworld, these fathers visit exotic lands, lonesome prairies, and even the wide heavens on the gossamer wings of horses. Parental listeners will likely detour into the recesses of their own hearts, in exploring the special bond and soothing strength of fatherhood. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars A beloved favorite in our household for 3 children (and their parents).......2006-12-14

We've listened to this music through the course of three babies and now three young children, who still select it as one of their favorites for nighttime music. Particular favorites are Tim and Mollie O'Brien's "Hush While The Little Ones Sleep", Michael Doucet's Cajun chanson to his son Ezra, Peter Rowan's haunting "On The Wings Of Horses", and Leon Redbone's typically old-timey "Russian Lullaby". Doc Watson, Townes Van Zandt and dobro genius Jerry Douglas turn in beautiful performances, too. But all the tracks have their own magic. Highly recommended for those who like roots Americana, folk and bluegrass.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I was expecting.......2006-06-18

I was looking forward to giving this to my husband for his first Fathers Day and was expecting sweet mellow lullabies, I had to take it out of CD player after the 3rd song. We were extremely disappointed in this purchase

5 out of 5 stars Lovely for naptime and mellow-time........2006-05-17

I got this from our local library to test it out with my 15-month-old daughter -- my husband is a country & folk music fan, so I thought I'd get it for his benefit. But, after just two days, I returned it and raced to the store to buy it for MY benefit. The only other lullaby CD I've liked so strongly is Putomayo's "Dreamland." "Daddies Sing Goodnight" is a wonderful mix of music, some cowboy-ish, some bluegrass, some just folksy. "Sweet Baby James" is gorgeous, and "Long Timey Ago" always makes me get a little choked up. I'm surprised that one reviewer says the songs/voices are scary, as that hasn't been our experience -- in fact, we find this a great calming, happy CD for mellow times, not just for naptimes. We're getting to know the songs well enough to sing along, which just adds to the pleasure.

2 out of 5 stars scary songs.......2006-02-25

Based on other reviews I picked this cd for my 6 month old for something different than lullabys. Big mistake. The voices are so low and dark that he is scared of it. I use music in the car to calm him since I can't reach him in the back and this music just gets him more upset. Maybe he'll grow into it- for the price I paid I hope so- there are much less expensive collections he just loves.

5 out of 5 stars Great for young and old.......2005-10-06

My mom bought my husband this CD when I was pregnant with our first. It has comforted us through births, car rides, and bedtimes. A great soothing CD.

I purchased the CD for only 1 song... Goodnight My Love..
It took me back to the Friday night church dances -- it was the last song of the night. Last close dance.. I listened to the rest of the CD.. Belvin was great.. Sorry that he had to die at such a young age. If you were a 50s to 60s teen I suggest you pick up a copy.

Jesse WHO? I barely knew who this guy was before picking up the CD in a bargain bin and I was an oldies DJ for 10 years. Most will probably only know him for co-writing Penguins smash hit "Earth Angel" but over the years Belvin also appeared as a guest singer on the Shields doo-wop hit "You Cheated". He garnered the nickname "Mr. Easy" for his touch with a ballad (indeed RCA was grooming him to be competition for Nat 'King' Cole and it's easy to see why). The music collected here covers the years 1956-1958 while he recorded for Modern records (NOT the same label Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks sang for..this was a Culver City,California based indie label). Also on here are alternate versions of the title cut and later hit "Beware" plus a pair of unreleased cuts from just before his Modern output (cut in 1955):"What Can I Do Without You?" and "I'll Make a Bet".

HIGHLIGHTS:
To hear some of the better examples of his "Mr. Easy" ballad voice, check out the title track, "Let me Love You Tonight" (a Cole soundalike) or "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" where he takes Nat head on (though in a doo-wop style). "Don't Close the Door" reminds one of some of the sweeping ballads of the Platters.

I think the real revelations here though are some great lost uptempo numbers: "I'll Mess You Up" is a zippy jealous lover's threat. Lines like "I saw you grinnin' at Jimmy and Jack/I think I'll disconnect your back" would never be recorded in this modern "politically correct" era. "I wanna Know Why" finds Jesse questioning his reactions to the presence of a young lovely. "My Satellite" is a space age take on the classic rock 'n' roll car songs like "Maybelline" or "Rocket '88". "Summertime" is a reinvention of the familiar Gershwin tune. Rather than the trilling vocal workout from Billy Stewart's oft heard rendition, Belvin makes it a mid-tempo jazzy rock ballad with a relaxed, knowing vocal that includes his proclamation that "your daddy's so-o-oh rich and your momma is, mm-hmm, you know she had to be good lookin'". "I Want you with Me Christmas" can be added to your holiday celebrations alongside the Drifters "White Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Baby" as R&B holiday nuggets. "Sad and Lonesome" heard here is the single version with Belvin's doubletracked vocal on the choruses.

LOW POINTS:
The alternate take of "Goodnight my Love" may be wonderful for collectors, but it's not sufficiently different from the single to prove interesting to the average listener. "Beware" is a nice song (It's a warning that Belvin is using his wiles to win a female's heart, not a threat like "I'll Mess You Up" is) but the snare drum is obnoxiously loud and it takes away from the tune. A brushed snare (mixed somewhat low) would probably have been a better choice. Neither of the last 2 unreleased songs are really anything special.

BOTTOM LINE:
While I'm not as effusive in my praise for Belvin as the liner notes writer is (most likely because he chose the tracks), it's obvious that the public's been done an injustice by his absence in "oldies" radio playlists. There's some good stuff here.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable talent, vastly underrated, largely unknown today.......2003-08-31

Aside from his signature song, the classic "Goodnight My Love", the music of Jesse Belvin has probably never been heard or appreciated by the vast majority of music fans. Jesse's smooth baritone voice was clearly the most influential in the annals of West Coast rhythm and blues and doo wop. Jesse was not only a solo act, but his duets with the likes of Marvin Phillips and Eugene Church were among the best duets recorded during the 1950's. The prolific Belvin also recorded with any number of L.A. and West Coast doo wop groups as well as other solo recordings under countless pseudonyms. This CD, "Goodnight My Love" is a 26 track compilation of Jesse's work for L.A.'s Modern records label. As usual, Englands Ace Records does a masterful job with this project. The Modern recordings are considered by many to be the "cream of the crop" of Belvins recordings. Take a listen and you will marvel at the consistant quality of these recordings. I don't know if the man was capable of making a bad record. Check out "Dream House", "Just To Say Hello" or the classic "Beware", considered by many to be Belvin's finest recording ever. Jesse signed with RCA records in 1958. RCA intended to make Belvin their answer to Nat King Cole. Although his RCA recordings such as "Guess Who" are fine, they just don't quite measure up to the material presented on this wonderful CD. Unfortunately, Jesse Belvin was killed in an automobile accident in 1960 near Hope, Arkansas. Give this disc a listen and discover an artist for the ages.

4 out of 5 stars He was a wonderful singer who died much too young.......1999-03-25

I was a fan of Jesse Belvin and had his albums inthe late 50s, and early 60s. I thought he was great. He got killed in an automobile accident in december of 1960. I still miss his music, especially songs like "What's New" and Gerswins, "Summertime".

5 out of 5 stars Lullabies from around the World to put your kids to sleep.......2002-02-07

I have always had a pet theory that with babies and small animals HOW you say something is always more important than WHAT you say. "The World Sings Goodnight" would certainly seem to put that theory to test as it offers lullabies from 33 different cultures, each sung in its native tongue. This means only a handful are sung in English and that until they are old enough to read the liner notes your little ones are never going to know what these songs are about. This is probably a good thing because there are songs that tell children "to wake you up we'll cut off your ears" and contemplate giving them to a witch or a bad man. My favorite is the lullaby from Egypt where the parent promises to bring the child two pairs of pigeons to eat or two pairs of black beetles to play with, but quickly explains to the animals that this is only being said to the baby so he will sleep.

These lullabies are sung either a capella or with the simple instrumentation of the culture, which can mean anything from end-blown bamboo flute to hurdy-gurdy to goat bells and hammered dulcimer. There is even on song accompanied by crickets. One nice thing about this album is that gender does not matter when it comes to singing a baby to sleep. Males sing the Indonesian lullaby where the mother pleads "Sleep and grow up well, honey, so that you can protect me later, because your father has gone away and forgotten you" and the Ogalia Sioux song where a woman sees the ghost of her dead husband (thus we learn that lullabies do not need to contain the typical lullaby references found in every typical lullaby to be an effective lullaby). There are also several nice examples of lullabies involving sweet harmonies between a pair of singers, including a piece written by producers Tom and Susan Wasinger that is quite lovely. These songs collected from five continents are song by "folk" voices in an effort to have these songs sung by people who have really had to persuade babies and young children to go to sleep. Final Note: I was listening to this CD in the morning and I almost fell asleep, so there is a very good chance it will work on your little ones as well.

3 out of 5 stars Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10

I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22

Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12

Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.

5 out of 5 stars Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26

This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

3 out of 5 stars Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

In the world of Calypso, Lionel Belasco is an iconoclast. He was born in Barbados; his father was a Sephardic Jew who sang baritone and played the violin, his mother a Trinidadian who classically trained the young pianist in their various homes in Barbados, Venezuela (whose music is highly in evidence in his work), and eventually Trinidad. But the young musician had a penchant for the local music and the local sports like stick fighting, and when he decided to become a professional, all of these images collided to create one of the most unique Calypsonians of any era. Classical piano, violin that crosses easily between Beethoven and European folk fiddle styles, and not a little of the "sweet band" jazz of American bands like the Paul Whiteman Orchestra are brought together by Belasco to great effect in these recordings made mostly in New York City, a place where he became something of a star in the '20s and '30s. The musicians are a star-studded lot: vocalist Wilmouth Houdini, violinist Cyril Montrose, and guitarist Gerald Clarke pepper these recordings, punctuating and counterpointing the structured songs of Belasco with a looser jazz feel. An added bonus on this 27-track collection are a number of solo performances and short interviews with Belasco in 1961, where he retells his story and explains the music. His songwriting was legend, his voice a charm, and his music some of the best of the era. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is one to cherish.......2002-09-16

Like a previous reviewer, I was introduced to Lionel Belasco through the Ghost World soundtrack. I loved all three of the songs and decided to look for more music by him. I was pleasantly surprised to find this. Its a great blend of calypso and some jazz and each song is different from the other but always top notch. There are fiddles, vocals and piano. All of the songs on here are wonderful and completely unforgettable. Houdini's vocals make some of these shine, and the instrumentals are moody at times, haunting at others and always compelling.

There are also a few tracks that have Lionel speaking which are memorable as well. The liner notes are very complete and perfectly done. This cd gives you great music and history all at the same time. I'm very glad that I have discovered music like this especially at a time when music is very bland.

i was turned on to the musical word of lionel belasco through the ghost world sound track. i loved the songs, "miranda" and, "venezuela." with the purchase of this disc, i was hoping to pick up more great calipso music. luckily for me (and you), it's full of dazzling and highy energetic tunes. the piano stylings of belasco and the vocal efforts of houdini are truly unique, unlike anything i've come across before. check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Belasco-Bellringer supreme.......2001-08-15

Belasco was an outstanding calypsonian of his era or any era for that matter. He emerged from a background that was unlike most of his calypso comrades. His songs were a masterful tapestry of life and love and struggles. He was able to couch his memorable ditties under the watchful eyes of the ever present censors working on behalf of British-bourgeois interests and sensibilities. He was a musical master who helped other calypsonians of that age. This album is an extraordinary mirror of the times. His rendition of "sly mongoose" is an overt attack on sexual exploitation by those with power in pre-independence Trinidad. With "Rufus hold me tight" he alluded to the sexual extravagance of a newly wed couple. Belasco rung the early bells of calypso with marvellous vitality. Future calypsonians and those who love this art form will always be grateful that the wind was able to blow his voice beyond Trinidad just like he extolled "Blow wind blow"
