5 out of 5 stars Apart from flutter and bluster, this is divinely beautiful........2007-05-18

This 3CD recording presents a very substantial part of Debussy's vocal works. It's full of the most superb and mysterious songs you'll ever hear. Debussy had such a marvellously unique harmonic approach, and it gives the impression of mist and mystery, of the insubstantial and unearthly. This makes those songs which feature characters of the Italian commedia d'arte (Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, etc.) so astonishing, and his songs of the beauties of the night and the moon so very beautiful.

The songs are almost entirely of a very high standard, and show how well Debussy knew the voice. (In my opinion, he particularly knew the virtues of the typical light high French soprano voice, and I can certainly attest that the majority of his songs lie beautifully and very comfortably in the soprano coloratura voice.) Occasionally there's a song that isn't of that typical high standard (the peculiar but very early song "Rondel chinois" comes to mind - it's a lovely thing to sing, but it's not a song of any distinction), but most of these are perfect gems.

The singing on this set varies a little. On the plus side is the ever-beautiful Elly Ameling, who had perhaps the most limpidly beautiful light lyrical soprano voice the world has ever heard; the amazing Frederica von Stade, who sings divinely; Michele Command, whose more robust soprano voice is often stunning; the experienced baritone Gérard Souzay (I have to admit I do not like his voice myself - his timbre and approach are not to my taste - but he is certainly very experienced in this genre and his French is so beautiful to listen to)... and on the not-so-plus side (for me, anyway) is the coloratura soprano of Mady Mesplé. I know there are devoted fans of Ms Mesplé - I must admit I am not one of them. While I admire the glorious ease of her top notes, and the young and attractive sound of the voice's natural timbre, I LOATHE what is to me an unbearable fluttering vibrato that ruins her singing. It sounds extraordinarily under-supported and very uncomfortable - but I also admit that Ms Mesplé clearly has a deep feeling for these mélodies. She certainly knows how to phrase - and certainly the range of her voice is remarkable. If only that twitter could be magicked away... then I'd probably be very satisfied with her singing.

Overall, then, this set is a charming and well-chosen array of almost all of Debussy's vocal output. It is not complete, though. I would recommend supplementing this delightful 3CD set with the recording of Debussy songs by Sandrine Piau, the somewhat bland but extremely pretty recording of Debussy's early songs by Gillian Keith, and the recording of Debussy songs sung by Anne-Marie Rodde (again, so very pretty, and it is one of the few recordings to include Debussy's duet "Chanson espagnole" - which is otherwise represented quite hideously on a recording by a tenor and baritone).

There's also some amazingly beautiful singing of Debussy songs on an album by Christine Oelze (her timbre reminds me so much of Ameling's - just lovely, and what excellent French!).

I have not listened to Dawn Upshaw's recording of Debussy songs, as she is not one of my favourite singers, but given that I've enjoyed her French performances in the past, I do plan to add her recording entitled "Forgotten Songs" to my collection.

And with all of that lot, you, the Debussy collector, will have a truly wonderful collection of Debussy's songs to hand!

3 out of 5 stars good value.......2007-01-07

Whilst this may not be the most amazing of all recordings of Debussy's works, it stands to say that it is a valuable source of listening reference for singer and indeed fans for Debussy's works. 3 discs make it a worthwhile bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice sellection of pieces and artists.......2006-05-01

'Melodies', a three CD collection of art songs by Claude Debussy is a far better investment than the Dawn Upshaw issue, 'Forgotten Songs' which I recently reviewed. At the very least, it seems these songs are not as forgotton as Upshaw would make us believe, as here they are on a collection headlining Elly Ameling and Frederica von Stade. I am not really up on modern classical performers, but even I know these are two major league sopranos.

If you like Debussy, you will certainly like this collection. If you are a died in the wool Upshaw fan, Miss Dawn's effort may sould a bit better to you.

I think this one definitely gives you more for the money.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous compositions, moments of great performing.......2002-08-07

This compilation is a fantastic resource for singers and colaborative pianists everywhere--and no one will argue with the beauty of Debussy's compositions.
Gerard Souzay seems like he's just going through the motions on all of his tracks; Elly Ameling has fabulous technique as always, but there is something wanting; Mady Mesple gives a great (if not heartfelt) performance. The standout performance on this disc is of the Ariettes Oubliees, as performed by Frederica von Stade. Beautiful, and the emotion is there.
I would recommend it for any singer's library. I do, however, hesitate to give it 5 stars and recommend it to everyone because the emotion just isn't there through many of the tracks--and Debussy without emotion is like bread without yeast--flat.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute to Debussy's Melodies.......2000-11-18

This set of cds is a must for anyone interested on performing any of Debussy's melodies. It really helps to listen to these to learn the pieces, as the singers are supurb and perform the songs with great artistic interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars Una grande band psichedelica!.......2007-06-17

5 out of 5 stars Bolin's Best Live Work?.......2000-12-07

I have to say that I think that this is Tommy Bolin's best live performance, or at least right up there! He is loose, bluesy, funky, fast, and on fire. Play "The Creator Has A Master Plan" once and be convinced. He never gave himself this much space to solo with the James Gang or with his own solo band in 1976, and he is in a more varied context than he was on "Ebbets Field 1974," which is one of his other best live works. I have to disagree with David Givens and say that this blows "Sunset Ride" away!!

4 out of 5 stars PSYCHEDELIC-BLUES ROCK.......2000-04-11

Out of all my Tommy Boin CDs, this is the most unusal for me. Not being a big fan of Bolin with Zephyr to begin with, this didn't win me over to say the least. It does deserve 4 stars though, because there are about 2 or 3 incredible if not to say, how does Tommy do it guitar solos. Most notably on Hard Chargin' Woman, which is his best I ever heard. Other the music is just unrehearsed, unpolished, and a bit unfocused. But I didn't expect this to be a tight, live set because the band had been broken uo for well over a year before getting back to together for this show. So it's just one big jam fest. A negative is Candy Givens, I never liked her singing so that's a real bummer on this but the music more than makes up for it. For Bolin fans, again, this is a must, because Tommy's solos on here are some of the best ever! LONG LIVE TOMMY BOLIN!

4 out of 5 stars Long time Zephyr fan!.......2000-03-27

Excellent live recording with only one complaint in the mixing-Candy's vocal gets a little lost in most parts. It's hard to come close to Alvin Lee's guitar leads on 'Comin' Home' (pre-Woodstock) but this is a must have for Bolin fans! And for the reviewer looking for a copy of "Sunset Ride" in LP form I have a few copies in excellent to mint condition.

5 out of 5 stars another long-time seeker of Sunset Ride loves it live.......1999-11-17

Best Zephyr since their appearances on American Bandstand and in Boulder nightclubs. Also desperately seeking Sunset Ride, easily their best work, one of the greatest albums ever. Why o why can this classic not be found or re-issued? Any help, Amazon?

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

    5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

3 out of 5 stars Should have been an instrumental album.......2006-11-15

I picked up this album because I recently have taken an interest in Tommy Bolin and was curious about his early recordings. I had only his reputation and the reviews on Amazon to go by. This album both impressed me and made me want to run to tape up the windows.

Let's talk about the impressive parts first. Musically there is a lot of talent here. At least twice I found myself thinking of Led Zeppelin, noting the slow heavy blues and Tommy Bolin's soloing, which occasionally resembles Jimmy Page's style on early Zeppelin albums, particularly on Somebody Listen and Hard Chargin' Woman. When Bolin is given a chance he proves himself a talented guitarist, even though the more familiar style of his later years is not apparent here. The other musicians do well too. Robbie Chamberlin (dr), David Givens (bs), and John Faris (keys, flute) show they can play heavy blues as well as any British band. Musically, this album deserves a 4 if not 5.

And then there's Candy Givens on vocal. At first - maybe the first minute - I thought she was alright, sounding a bit like Janis Joplin. But it became apparent soon that she was no Janis. The biggest problem is her constricted-throat wailing and howling that has her sounding like one half of a cat fight. It spoils almost every song. The band is playing away some beautiful music and Candy comes in starting out okay and then suddenly WHAAAA-IIIHH! Their cover of Raindrops had me begging for an instrumental soon. In fact, the next track is an instrumental. Boom-Ba-Boom is a 1:20 intro to Somebody Listen and ends with another WHAAAAH from Candy. The absolutely ludicrous Huna Buna, a song that is more annoying than The Black-eyed Peas's Humps song, had me clutching my forehead and saying, "God, make her stop!" Later I realized that the song might have been intended as a joke.

To be fair, she has a sense of what she is trying to do - that is sing jazzy or heavy blues like Robert Plant or Janis Joplin - and she can sing and does a decent if not pretty good job of it as long as she is not doing that atrocious caterwauling. Her voice will only appeal to those that like that style or to those who can get used to it. The rest of the album is great if you can get past the screaming and howling. I give it three stars only because the vocals spoiled it for me. Considering the vocals alone I would have been hard pressed to rate it as high as a two.

      5 out of 5 stars Such a warm glow.......2006-01-13

What an incredible "Sunset Ride" this album gave me and many friends in the lovely, long lost, early 70s. It is easy and jazzy and rockin' and serene and mystic. We worshiped it.
When I listen to it today as a high milage, middle ager, it still shines with the luminosity of those lost sunsets. It is still beautiful and inspiring. Perhaps only to those of us that hear it with the ears of times gone by. I am so lucky just to have a playable copy of someone else's very old LP original.
Let's toast to the spirits and perfect sunsets of these musicians and singers...

relistened to this lately, tremendous album for your review, two key elements , bolins bluesy riffs, and candy givens heavy blues vocals, similar to joplin but cleaner,,,, this plays as well today as it did in 70 just far to short, wonder where the studio outtakes are on this one,,,, too bad tommy died so soon best song is st james infirmary stands alone in its time and for all time,,,,,,

I saw this band open up for 10 years after at the filmore east in february 1970. To say the least i was quite impressed. They put on an excellent show. They released the 10 years adter show on cd to bad they didn't do the same for zephyr's set.

Needless to say i went out and bought this record and their later effort; which never reached the intensity of this recording.

        5 out of 5 stars Incredible treasure!.......2007-05-07

As a lifelong fan of Heifetz, I was thrilled to discover this newly released recording of
live performances. Many selections have clear, beautiful recorded sound, and the playing is
truly unbelievable. There is a certain special electricity in these live performances that is
astounding, and any lover of violin playing, string playing,
instrumental playing, or music making should check out this treasure. A few of the tracks have a muted, muffled quality,
but there are enough well-recorded tracks to make the CD well worth the purchase price. Even the muffled tracks are worthwhile because
Heifetz's extraordinary sound and playing comes through even with some inferior fidelity in a few of the tracks.

2 out of 5 stars content vs. sound quality.......2004-09-25

the recording has a representative collection of Heifitz's concert standards, as well as some more obscure works. even after digital remastering, the poor sound quality detracts from the enjoyment of the pieces. apparently the original performances were for broadcast in the 1940's and early 50's. it sounds like someone had a recorder in front of the radio.

should be of interest to collectors and music students, not audiophiles. the more popular pieces are available on other recordings; the others seem pretty rare.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic!!!.......2004-01-01

This album has it all for those who enjoy minimalistic or electronica styles of music. It contains the classic orchestral techniques of earlier works like Harmonielehre etc. mentioned by others here, but is also relevant to the leading styles of trance music today. It paints broad aural landscapes to transport the listener to a journey of electronic heaven. It must be mentioned that the production of the album by John Adams himself is of the highest calibre and every detail is catered for. Simply fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Minimalist.......2000-12-01

If you're looking for good minimalist music (there may be those who would say that's an oxymoron), John Adams is as good as they come. His creation of sound and mood is superb. While he is definitely an acquired taste, if you approach his music receptively, you may find possible initial negative impressions melting away and a genuine appreciation setting in.

4 out of 5 stars Not classical music, but I like it.......2000-04-01

First, what this is not: Its not "classical music", no symphony, no string quartet. Nope, its just Mr. Adams and his trusty bank of synths. It also is not "rock" or "jazz" or any other handy term. It is closest to the experimental music of Brian Eno (think Before and After Science without the singing) or the "fusion/jazz" compositions of Pat Metheny post 1990 (especially Imaginary Day).

Some pieces I think are a lot of fun to listen to (Tourist Song, Cerulean, Coast). Other pieces I found really hard to listen to and undestand but I've found that over the years, I've learned to appreciate them, even the very odd music of Disappointment Lake and Bump (yikes!).

This record suggests what Mr. Adams might accomplish were he to turn his attention more seriously towards "popular" music. I, for one, like this music better than "Gnarly Buttons" (for example).

4 out of 5 stars Noodles are good for the soul (if a bit thick on the gut).......1999-03-13

Among the several things to admire about John Adams, the most fun is his ability to annoy the sentiments of those who expect music to be a prestigious invitation only social club. On one occasion after being asked to perform at the keyboard yet again for the amusement of the upwardly mobile, Beethoven is reported to have sat at the instrument and pounded the keys with the flats of his hands. While not as beligerent, music from John Adams of the type on "Hoodoo Zepher" is probably in a similar vein - a momentary reprieve from the stress of expectation with something like a raspberry thrown in for good measure.

It is silly to dismiss this as not being as accomplished as the rest of the man's work. Of course it isn't. It's fun and what's wrong with that? John Adam's home baked noodles are infinitely more interesting than much of the (no doubt) tirelessly crafted and thorougly forgettable material being passed off as "serious" art of "passion" and "depth" at every turn. "Passion" and "Depth" are over rated and their status as the ultimate litmus test of a work's value is becoming tedious.

"Hoodoo Zephyr" is about constant development, whereas much of what is classified "New Age" is about harmonic and melodic stasis. This album is best enjoyed when listened to for the sake of the journey without agonizing over where it is or isn't taking you.

(My apologies to Mr. Adams if I have misrepresented his intentions.)

1 out of 5 stars Also skeptical of this CD.......1999-01-09

At the outset let me say that I've only heard part of this CD.

A previous reviewer has doubted whether this is really the John Adams that wrote Shaker Loops and Harmonielehre.

However, the first track on this CD sounds a lot like Light Over Water. The rest of the tracks that I've heard are dishwatery new-age pablum.

If this is indeed THE John Adams, this doesn't rank with his masterpieces.

        Album Description

Turlough O'Carolan, last of the Irish bards, was born in 1670 near Nobber, County Westmeath, but moved with his family to the Roscommon-Leitrim area while very young. His father was employed at an iron foundry operated by the St. George and MacDermott Roe families. Totally blinded in his late teens by smallpox, Turlough O'Carolan was taken in by Mrs. MacDermott Roe at the Alderford house, near Boyle. Here, he studied under a harper for three years. A more creative tale claims that O'Carolan once slept on a fairy rath and forever after heard fairy music to inspire him. "The Harper's Reverie" captures some of O'Carolan's fanciful musings.

At age 21, equipped with a horse, a guide and money, O'Carolan began his career as an itinerant harper although he seldom traveled much beyond the province of Connacht. In the Irish bardic tradition, the harper was popular and held high social status in the "Big Houses," and the tunes composed for his patrons were referred to as "planxties" (musical tributes). Considered as much more than a mere musician or composer, O'Carolan was an honored guest of his patrons and regarded as a sage who articulated eloquence, wit and profundity. And, of course, he kept his patrons informed of the latest gossip collected while traveling the Irish countryside. If, by chance, he encountered a less than hospitable host (as he once did at the house of Jennings of Mayo), O'Carolan might be heard ranting, "Devil take the glass that was meant for a dwarf, and the same for the hand that didn't fill it by half!"

O'Carolan had numerous romantic affections, and some of his compositions were written for his lady loves. Many of his songs addressed to Bridget Cruise, his youthful yet hopeless attachment, have been irretrievably lost.

The influences of Italian composers such as Geminiani and Corelli show in some of O'Carolan's works. The sources for most of the tunes played in this compilation are Edward Bunting's "Ancient Music of Ireland" collections. Bunting transcribed and arranged many of the tunes he heard at the 1792 Belfast Festival of Harpers, a gathering of musicians and musicologists interested in preserving this important heritage. At the Harpers' Festival, Bunting witnessed only one harper still using the old fingernail technique (rather than using the flesh of the finger), and by the 1820s the great school of Irish harp playing had greatly disappeared.

In 1738, O'Carolan died and was buried at the cemetery of the old 6th century O'Duignan Abbey at Kilronan, his grave adjoining the vault of the MacDermotts. In 1990, my wife (also a harpist) and I were fortunate to attend the Turlough O'Carolan Thirteenth International Harp Festival and visited O'Carolan's gravesite. The Festival is held in the picturesque Irish village of Keadue, County Roscommon, at the foot of the Arigna Mountains near the shores of Lough Meelagh in the heart of O'Carolan country.

Near Castlerea, one of O'Carolan's harps can be found at the 45-room Clonalis House, the ancestral home of the Clan O'Conor, who gave 11 high kings to Ireland and 24 kings to Connacht. Another of O'Carolan's harps, a large sycamore instrument with 35 strings, is on exhibit in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. During his years of itinerant minstrelsy, O'Carolan was said to have composed about 200 pieces of music, although many have been lost.

Join us on a musical journey to shape a portrait of another age, one that displays the joys of life and revelry that marked O'Carolan's day. The Irish simply called it "Luinneach" (merry music). We hope that you'll experience an epiphany from the beauty, color, emotion, gentleness and melodic expression of Turlough O'Carolan's musical compositions. Thank you for your support of this music.
