5 out of 5 stars please give it up for roberson.......2007-07-05

To me this is the best R&B cat never to blow up. I can't imagine what it is that people want from r&b. It is not hip hop even though that's the only way people tend to identify it. He's too good to fall through the cracks. My favorite track is without question "Too Soon". His ability to flow over smooth music with heart felt lyrics without sounding like a huge cornball is magical on this track along with the rest of the CD.
Too bad radio is too busy riding the jocks of the dirty south to give true talent some play on their tired programs. The music industry is depressing to a true music lover. Pick up this CD and you can feel free to respond to me however you want if you don't like. This is SPLENDID work by this brother. By the way another loved track is "Pretty Girl". Just go get it.

5 out of 5 stars Open your Eyes to Real Soul Music!!!!!!!.......2007-04-04

All I need to say is buy this disc...Eric Roberson-Left is Classic Soul at it's best. From start to finish you will not be disappointed. Couldn't Hear her, and Pretty Girl are outstanding. If I could this disc would get a 10.....One of the best soul cd's this year.

5 out of 5 stars COP THIS!!!.......2007-04-01

I first saw Eric perform live on an obscure television show called 8101, off of the Colors network. From that time, I have been on an independent mission to cop his work. To say Eric has a beautiful voice would be stating the obvious. What is most impressive is that he writes most of his music, which judging from the CD liner notes, are based on real experiences. Having said that, whatever emotion, Eric felt when writing the songs is absolutely captured in the texture and tone of his voice. This is some real, non digitalized, homegown w/o hormones singing. Yes, it has been said that neo soul is Dead... Perhaps, but Eric is literally the second coming of neo soul. Not one song on this album is bad, even the experimental bonus track, which reminds of a tune from the 80's. The lyrics are outstanding. Please step outside the R n B box, I promise you won't be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars History in the Making..........2007-03-17

If there's anyone who doesn't know or you've never heard of Eric Roberson some how, he is the leading voice in the underground soul scene. He sure does not disappoint with his latest project "LEFT". I've never heard songs filled with so many different views, emotions, and character. You'll find a song for ANY situation you've might have went through or are going through.
"Music" the title track is a great opener. Eric does a great job bringing you in to the true meaning of what music is all about...

"Pen Just Cries Away" another outstanding song, is about someone who because of his last relationship, he can't help but write in the sad mood he's in. THAT IS SO TRUE (for any writers out there...)

"ILuvU2Much" another classic feat the talented and beautiful Algebra, explains that no matter how hard it is to walk away from a relationship you have to love yourself enough if it's hurting you. Nice uptempo duet..

"Pretty Girl" a smooth tune, talks about a girl who doesn't know how to get by in life without using her beauty. And Eric trying to school her on why she shouldn't and what could happen to her... The way he sings with sympathy for her is crazy good...

"Open Your Eyes" says it all. Listen and you will definitely feel it after you do...

"The Baby Song" is one of the most original songs EVER. What a fun way to explain the process of the last moments before child birth. GENIUS.

I could go on and on because each song has it's own uniques story, and there is not one song you would skip over on this CD...

If you don't own this Cd yet or any of his music, please try it, cause I know it will change you perspectives on music. It changed mine...

On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-04-25

These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.

4 out of 5 stars Broad Spectrum Virtuosity.......2007-04-23

This album runs the gamut of styles and genre. It is hard to get bored when a musical turn is but a few notes away. The two musicians integrate their instruments with incredible skill. I hate to give it a four star rating. The music is worth the 5. The loooooong, live applause tracks detract from the album. The asides by the musicians are sometimes hard to hear. Minor aggravations aside, this album plays frequently, very frequently, in our home, car, iPods, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Pairing for Meyer/Fleck Fans.......2007-01-02

I've seen both Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck live (unfortunately not together) and I really think this album just captures the magic of their live shows: I can almost see them in my living room together! For those not so familiar with the music of one or both the inclusion of classical tunes with those composed by Meyer/Fleck and other contemporary songwriters is a cool drink of water. Music for Two is a good intro to the world of cozy bluegrass.

5 out of 5 stars Bela Fleck + Edgar Meyer = strange mixture .......2006-11-10

Bela Fleck is one of the my jazz favorites... And hi with combination called Edgar Meyer are... great music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosity Knows No Musical Boundaries.......2006-10-22

Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer are both extraordinarily accomplished musicians who spend much of their time in very different worlds: Fleck in his newgrass space and Meyer in a more classical mode. But each has travelled in the other's territory before, and on this CD they connect around more genres than you can shake a stick at. In addition to their own compositions they tackle many of their joint favorites. The affection shows in the passion of the playing and the obvious camaraderie. And the accompanying DVD is a treat. Don't miss this one.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

For those of you who enjoy the music, as it was sung and played during the Civil War, this recording is a "must!" J.A. McA.

    5 out of 5 stars Living history.......1999-07-31

So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title (DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me; it is really a very good CD.......2005-06-16

In 1969, I have bought the Longplaying "March in review - Stirring U.S. service marches - Band of the Grenadier Guards". It is the original recording on London SP44131 and it was considered at that time as one of the best military music recordings ever done. This CD contains exactly the same tunes payed exactly in the same manner and it is always a powerful recording. Listen Anchors Aweigh and you will hear the sound of the waves. No other band can do that. Listen "Ballad of the green berets", "Semper Paratus", "She wore a yellow ribbon" or "Thru the years" and you will understand why I like it. Trust me; it is really a very good CD.

I agree with who ever wrote the following review 100%. This this CD is awful.

"So much orchestral embellishment that one can't even pick out the tune you want to hear. What a mess they've made of simple powerful music."

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Great!.......2001-12-02

I just recieved this cd in the mail and cannot stop listening to it. It is uplifting and makes you want to stand up and start marching. Truly patriotic and American, buy this one! Don't listen to the person who said that they made a mess of this cd. This is one of the great ones!

Along with such players as Greg Osby, Stefon Harris, and Mark Shim, Jason Moran is making jazz that reflects myriad influences, from the traditional bop guard to Icelandic techno artist Bjork to contemporary classical and beyond. But theirs is not some studied attempt at a new music, or a stab at solo stardom created by labels and producers. Facing Left, like the New Directions group and Harris's lauded Black Action Figure, is serious, evocative, gripping, and explorative jazz. With dense, involving support from drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Tarus Mateen, Moran begins Facing Left with the delicately erotic maze of "Later." "Thief Without Loot" darts over funky grooves with both acoustic and Rhodes piano, kind of a twinkling tightrope walk. Bjork is a favorite among many young musicians, and here Moran covers her moonlight missive "Joga" with elegance and a touch of Thelonious Monk. In fact, Monk surfaces often here (try the rambunctious Duke Ellington track, "Wig Wise"), mostly in Moran's touch. Also present is the luminous grace of Keith Jarrett, the logic of Herbie Hancock, and the lush romanticism of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Using rhythm like a conjurer's wand, Moran employs weird, stumbling beats in "Yojimbo" and "Battle of the Cattle Acts," while "Murder of Don Fanucci" rides a staggering military march. --Ken Micallef

4 out of 5 stars Maybe the best JaMo album.......2005-12-31

"Black Stars" is really good too, but this one really has it from start to finish. I don't like it when Taurus Mateen starts playing electric bass on the more recent albums. I saw them live and the electric bass was much louder than the piano!!! Yuck.

But this is really, really interesting playing by all three members. I think Nasheet Waits is one of the best younger drummers. He has his own style, coming out of free playing but with some Jack DeJohnette in there too. He, Jason, and Mateen seem to play the beat real rubbery--not evenly. It shouldn't work but I like it.

Good idea to play a Bjork cover--a boon to get your girlfriend into the CD (she remains partial to "The Bad Plus," of course.)

      5 out of 5 stars Better than 5 Stars!!.......2002-09-21

This is my favorite Jason Moran album. The Musicianship from all three players; Jason, Tarus Mateen(Bass) and Nasheet Waits(Drums) is incredible for such young musicians. This is surely NOT his weakest effort,as said by another reviewer. This is his Strongest effort in my opinion. Jason keeps getting better and more creative with each release. There is no such thing as; this should sound like this;and this should sound like that;this song dosen't work etc.... True originality and creativity is to expect the unexpected, and that's what Jason Moran does and hopefully will continue to do for many years to come.

3 out of 5 stars A good but not great sophomore disc.......2002-03-06

Jason Moran's been getting a lot of good press lately, especially from the NY Times' Ben Ratliff. I've found him an interesting & sympathetic figure--a young player who eschews the boring mainstream brew of Evans, Hancock et al which most young jazz pianists purvey, for a style predicated upon the more experimental areas of the Blue Note catalogue in its heyday (Andrew Hill, Jaki Byard & Herbie Nichols seem to be important influences, along with Ellington & Monk). But he's yet to deliver a fully satisfying disc, though his third disc, _Black Stars_, is surely his best yet, & his debut, _Soundtrack to Human Motion_, is also quite intriguing. _Facing Left_, his trio album, is surely his weakest effort, in which a bunch of interesting ingredients--his striking piano style, a good band, an eclectic mix of influences from pop song, film music & urban grooves--never really adds up. He dots the album with a little electric keyboard & organ but basically it's a straight piano trio; most tracks are very brief (2-5 minutes) & seem more like jumble sales of good ideas than convincing performances. "Twelve", a nice blues, turns out well, & is basically pinched from Moran's teacher Jaki Byard (compare the chords Moran uses once the solo gets going to Byard's blues "Mrs Parker of KC" on Dolphy & Little's _Far Cry_). "Wig Wise" actually suggests Herbie Nichols more than Ellington. Really, none of the tracks here is without interest, but they often impress without striking much deeper. Consider this disc as a small manifesto for the young player, & wait for him to really put out the masterpiece he surely has in him; meanwhile, check out his other two discs rather than this one. I look forward to his forthcoming solo CD.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Jazz CD.......2002-01-19

This is my favorite jazz CD. I have over 100 jazz CDs, most of which are jazz piano, and Facing Left has vaulted to the top of the heap. Jason Moran's trio (The Bandwagon) present a remarkably eclectic, thoroughly engaging 57 minutes of music. Moran's playing is incredibly creative. I can't do it justice, except to say that it is different from any other jazz piano CD I have (lots of Jacky Terrasson, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Cyrus Chestnut, among others). Anyone who can cover obscure Ellington ("Later," "Wig Wise"), a Bjork tune ("Joga"), a song from The Godfather: Part 2 ("Murder of Don Fanucci"), and a song from a Kurazawa film ("Yojimbo") along with writing great stuff himself ("Thief Without Loot", "Fragment of a Necklace," "Gangsterism on Wood," among others) all on the same CD is cool with me! In addition, Tarus Mateen and Nasheet Waits smoke on drums and bass, respectively. Great, great CD! (I dig the cover art, as well).

5 out of 5 stars Comments from an absolute beginner.......2001-03-14

I attended the concert that Jason Moran Greg Osby and Joe Lovano held at Umbria Jazz Winter in December 2000.

Even if I'm not a big fan of Jazz, I _had_ to buy this CD, and now I'm listening to it every weekend.

Joga and Murder of Don Fanucci are among the tracks I like more.

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.
