As each new Enya release has washed over all who have ears to hear, as each heaven-touched work leaves admirers sitting speechless in slack-jawed wonder, questions eventually come to mind: Might her layered, choral-like approach gradually become predictable or stale? Will she ever exhaust her deep reservoir of soul-stirring ideas? Remarkably, A Day Without Rain, Enya's fourth release since her 1988 breakthrough, Watermark, establishes new artistic heights for the gifted Irish vocalist and keyboardist. The project, polished and refined over a five-year period in the company of longtime collaborators Nicky Ryan (producer) and Roma Ryan (lyricist), may qualify as her best yet--a radiant, beatific collection of works that command attention with their cathedral-like resonance as they soothe your spirit with some of Enya's loveliest, most graceful voicings ever. The disc's opening three tracks (including the spellbinding "Only Time") form a gorgeous trilogy that suggest Enya has deepened her focus on the nexus where sophisticated pop and regal mysticism, the twin rivers of her singular sound, form a seamless intersection. The disc's gentle timbre is disturbed only once, and in memorable fashion, with "Tempus Vernum," a marshalling of mythic sonic forces that brings to mind the theme from the De Beers diamond commercial, but with a Celtic/Goth edge. Additional highlights abound. The closing "Lazy Days" will leave your soul dancing in a shower of flower petals and sunshine. A wonderful recording. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-07-20

A Day Without Rain truly highlight's Enya's voice as an instrument. "Rain" delivers a focus on the sound of the music and not just on the lyrics.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Enya, But So What?.......2007-06-24

Now don't get me wrong -- I am an Enya fan. And as such I was looking forward to the release of the CD.

I probably listen to it the least of any of her CD's that I own (for the record, I have "Shepherd Moons," "Watermark," "The Memory of Trees," "The Celts," "Paint the Sky with Stars," and "Amarantine").

Why? Because with each previous (and subsequent) Enya release, there has been something that goes beyond the ethereal tones that we expect from her. And I just don't hear it here.

I do have my favourites on the CD just like anyone else ("Flora's Secret" and "Lazy Days"), but I wouldn't say that they stand out in any significant way from tracks on other CD's. If you have to choose one disc among Enya's later works, pick up Amarantine first, then grab this one later if you want a complete tome.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Enya CD.......2007-02-11

love all the selections, some are upbeat & cheery others more melancholy.

5 out of 5 stars Relax.......2007-01-17

I have had this cd for about 4 years and it still has the same effect......RELAXATION. It makes me feel very calm and centered.
I have 4 cd's from Enya and this one is the one I listen to because I love Only time, A day without rain. Those are my favorites!
If you are a fan of hers this one is a must!

5 out of 5 stars A very special one........2007-01-09

This CD have a meaning to me, the song Only Time have a healing message for everyone. Is like having someone who is giving you an advice in trouble times. You have to get this CD!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19

It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-03-20

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

2 out of 5 stars So close to what it should be and yet so far.......2005-12-12

I had high hopes when I received The String Quartet Tribute to Enya: Dreams. I enjoy practically everything Enya's ever done; I enjoy string quartets, depending on what they play and how well they play it; Enya uses synthetic and occasionally real stringed instruments on her albums; and a "tribute" album by a real string quartet ought to be respectful of Enya's music. How could I lose?

Well, my deductive logic overlooked one fact: not everyone takes the concept of "tribute" in the same way. Some take considerable license with the original artist's work. This album does that more than many. If the problem had stopped there, this could have been a good album anyway. Not so.

First, the musicians are very good ones, but the arrangements (even when respectful) are mediocre at best. (I kept thinking, "Hey, I could do better than that with my own MIDI arrangements. In fact, I have done better than that!" And if I can say that as a amateur songwriter, hopefully accurately, then there's something seriously wrong with the "pros".) Second, with some tracks (above all the cover of "A Day Without Rain"), the spirit and sometimes the form of the original song is distorted almost or even entirely beyond recognition.

In short, Enya fans should avoid this album like the plague. The producers are to be commended for not simply making a pastiche of Enya's music, but the Taliesin Orchetra did a much better (if still not perfect) effort in that direction. I'd like to be merciful and give this album a 3, but I can't; what it does to "A Day Without Rain" alone is simply inexcusible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Poetic and Beautiful.......2006-09-05

Enya brings us once again the haunting music that is her trademark, written in multiple languages.

The CD kicks off with the mellow instrumental "A Day without Rain." A piano provides the principal musical instrument with Enya humming in harmony. The music evokes nature at peace; woods with a light breeze on a cool day, light clouds dotting a peaceful sky. You could readily sleep to this music. The instrumental leads into "Wild Child," a faster paced song that stays within the musical theme of the peaceful outdoors, but now the music has the theme of the wild, yet innocent child, frolicking in the benign environment. Enya's vocals are as much instrument as the instruments themselves. This song is beautiful in its conception and execution.

"Only Time" follows. Enya proves once again that she has the ability to create beautiful musical poetry. The deceptively light lyrics can pull the listener into a deep contemplation of love and life and the roads that we choose. The lyrics also explain that we must have patience because only time will allow all to be revealed in fullness.

Enya then switches themes and styles as she moves into a Latin song with heavy bass backing. The literal translation of "Tempus Vernum" is "Spring Time." The lyrics appear to be a series of words that might be considered to be opposites, such as east and west, earth and star, and autumn and spring. Thus in one sense Roma Ryan's lyrics appear to be exploring the Yin and Yang of some Asian philosophies, the contrast of opposites. The serious, ponderous tone of the music is heavily contemplative; deep philosophical evaluation of a subject; beautiful in the selection of words and the musical match.

The musical tone then becomes a Gaelic lament, "Deora ar mo chroi," or "Tears on My Heart." The gentle, sad music belies the actual translation of the Gaelic, which is full of beauty and happiness. The effect is more in the poetry of the Gaelic and how well the music is matched to it rather than the actual meaning of the words. The execution is very artistic and poignant.

Enya then lightens the music with "Flora's Secret," which has a faster pace than the previous two selections. This love song is musical poetry and is beautiful and full; a musical wine. You may either interpret the song from an aspect of nature, or of two lovers. In either case, this song is an experience.

"Fallen Embers" is a dream, a memory of a former love. Mellow, slow, but sufficiently ethereal to keep from being ponderous. Enya's beautiful voice is the centerpiece of the song. The instruments add fullness, but her voice alone could have carried this song.

"Silver Embers" is another instrumental with a moderate pace. Short and, as always, beautiful, this song leads into "Pilgrim," yet another lament. I personally enjoy this song because the theme is that there are many roads to choose in life, some of which lead to nowhere, and yet we have no clue as to which is which, and which is the best. We are all pilgrims in life, and this song is our song.

Sometimes I have difficulty in interpreting Roma Ryan's lyrics. Such is the case with "One by One." I understand that this song is about love, but some of the lyrics imply there is a constraint between him and her, and she is longing to be free of those constraints. Yet the final stanza implies that love binds them and will never die; a bit confusing for my poor brain.

This version adds "The First of Autumn." Other versions add "Isobella." I would like to have had both on one CD, which would have made a longer version. Both songs are nice to have, and I find it obnoxious to have to buy multiple CD's to obtain all the available tracks.

The quicker-paced "Lazy Days" finishes off the CD. Given the general theme of nature and love this song appears to tidily wrap up the CD with the promise of things yet to come.

Enya has once again created another sumptuously beautiful work of music that you can listen to time after time just to begin to appreciate the complexity and poetry of this music. This music is unique and nearly stands in its own category. It is artistically and technically flawless. The only possible flaw this CD has is that it is only about 39 minutes long. I could argue that for the beauty and quality of the music 39 minutes is a great length, but it seems to me that a bit more quantity would have made this CD absolutely phenomenal. As it is, it begs to be combined with another short work to create a full CD's worth of music; admittedly a minor flaw.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A song to remember, A song to reflect, A song to restore.......2006-08-30

Its almost 5 years after the 9/11 attacks. Throughout the past five years "Only Time" has played many times. Still I find it hard to get past the end of the song without tears in my eyes and profound sadness I feel. For many, may be a song of healing. It has an opposite affect on me (don't know why). Currently I want to put together a moving slide show of the life and times of the Twin Towers. I think the song is perfect for my project and would be a emotionally touching tribute instead of rehashing the awfulness connected to the event. The slide show will only show the photos of the beginnings of the construction to pictures of the views and the beautiful years they existed. No scenes of the attacks will be included, theres already venues for that. Lastly, I hope there are some pretty pan shots over the tops of the WTC. The end of the slide show (and song) will fade and the WTC will re-appear proud and tall.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the US version.......2002-03-03

While Enya seemed a little aimless and misdirected on the US version of A Day Without Rain, it was a very strong achievement for any artist, it just simply didn't live up to the previous precedents she has set with other albums like Watermark and The Memory of Trees. Backed by the singles Only Time (which went #1 in Germany and Canada, and #10 here in the United States) and Wild Child, which are all stunning and complemented by truthful, meaningful lyrics, this Aussie pressing of ADWR improves upon the US version with the edition of The First of Autumn, Enya's most stirring instrumental to date. Complete with strings, cello, violins, and a plethora of other stringed instruments it's a passionate, sensual song that is complemented with stunning voices by Enya. It's an absolute stunning piece that adds more time and a different perspective to A Day Without Rain. While some of the pieces on the album may be a bit stiff and austere (Tempus Vernum, Silver Inches), songs like The First of Autumn and One by One are absolutely stunning and show why Enya is one of the most paramount artist of our time. I recommend this cd if you're a fan of Enya's pieces and were looking for something more than the meager 34 minute US pressing of A Day Without Rain.

5 out of 5 stars Very Soothing.......2001-08-16

I find this CD to be very comforting. I truly enjoy it. My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves it. She especially loves track 3 - "Only Time". I personally love them all. She is a truly gifted artist. Now I know I have to order "Watermark" because I love the song "Orinoco Flow" also know as "Sail Away". I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic and Beautiful.......2006-08-04

The serious ponderous tone of the music is heavily contemplative, deep philosophical evaluation of a subject; beautiful in the selection of words and the musical match.

This love song is musical poetry is beautiful and full, a musical wine.

This version adds the song "Isobella," a sumptuous four and a half minute bonus track that is worth. I usually avoid recommending alternative releases that contain unnecessary bonus tracks. In the case of this CD, "Isobella" should have appeared on the U.S. release. The layered vocals are beautifully done and rank with some of Enya's best, which is disappointing because it did not appear on the original U.S. release. Perhaps a future U.S. release will include this song.

What a song.If you don't you are missing something please get. Thanks Enya.

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2002-03-03

A Day Without Rain, Enya's latest heralded achievement, was missing something in my estimation. The US pressing was a meager 34 minutes, and just didn't feature the same passionate Gaelic songs of her other masterpieces, Watermark and Shepherd Moons. As a devoted fan of Enya's, I was intrigued by the Japanese pressing of the album, because of the very rare bonus track, Isobella. I was not disappointed by it in the least, upon receiving this import album a few months ago. It is a vast improvement over the US pressing and Aussie pressing of the album. Isobella, track 11, is an amazing piece with Gaelic lyrics written by Enya herself. While the title doesn't translate, the song itself transcends language boundaries. It's an atmospheric masterpiece with stunning voice layering and clear and distinct lyrics that surround one in what Enya defines as a veritable "wall of sound." Comprised of a lighter section of music and then a more passionate, earnest section of music, it exemplifies why Enya is one of the top recording artists of our time. Beyond this track, other bonuses include a lyric booklet that is printed on harder material, an additional booklet containing an interview with Enya in Japanese and translated lyrics, and a disc that is evergreen on light green versus the red on seafoam of the US release. While I own all three versions of A Day Without Rain, this is clearly the most prized and most stunning of all. I truly recommend this cd, especially for collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Day without rain.......2002-02-05

I hear many kinds music in my life, but Day without rain Enya is different song. That's song make me always happy, fully hope the live is verry nice in peace. I go to my office and back home with this song. It's real.

5 out of 5 stars Isobella: Enya's best song in years!.......2001-11-12

I reviewed A Day Without Rain about a week ago however I managed to download Isobella onto my computer and wow! WShat a song. While I liked Enyas latest album Isobella surpasses every other songs on A Day Without Rain.

Isobella is a beautiful song that has a hounting chorus and beautiful Gaelic lyrics. I have no idea why Japan gets all the good songs. All countries deserve to hear this song.

While I somewhat disagree with Kabir Ahamed about it beating out Na Leatha Geal M'Oige and Smaointe, Isobella is a song that stands out on its own. It's a somewhat dark song that could have propelled ADWR to a five star. Enya hasn't put out such a great song in a long time.

I highly reccommend that you get this version of ADWR. Incredible work Enya! I hope your next album is a return to your darker more Boadicea-esque sound.
