Few bands in the big surf rock revival of the 90's managed to sound as fresh and original as Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. "Savvy Show Stoppers" features their classic "Having an Average Weekend," which was used for the theme music to "Kids in the Hall," a popular Canadian comedy show. Fans of KITH will recognize much of the music here. Come to think of it, fans of the show probably already know this. Newcomers will also find much to enjoy, as all of these quirky instrumentals are upbeat and easily accessible.

One of the Most Original Instrumental Bands.......2005-08-26

I can't say that I've ever heard a band that sounds like this one. I listen to a lot of surf music, and these guys are one of my favorites.
If you ever get the chance, you should check out The Flesh Eating Goons [...] They Have an EP out and they are working on a Full length CD right now.

"Kids in the Hall".......2002-05-03

If you ever watched the old Kids in the Hall show, the theme song was written by these guys. It's on this album known as "Having an Average Weekend". Savvy Show Stoppers is a great collection of surf guitar instrumentals all in the spirit of "Having an Average Weekend.

Orginal rhythms permeate the album, but there isn't a lot variation on the songs. They're all about the same pace. Think of this as a surf guitar jam album. It's just the band jamming away on slightly different rhythms. Somehow it doesn't detract from the album's appeal though.

Sheer perfection.......2002-04-04

If one were to take the absolute best ideas and styles of Dick Dale, Link Wray and The Ventures...add in a splash of The B-52's, Chuck Berry and The Ramones, then they would come up with the amazing sound of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. This album just blows me away with it's amazing style, wit, and unbelievable consistancy. There's not a single bad apple in the whole bunch. The way every song title brilliantly matches the sound and atmosphere of the music is positively stunning. (not to mention fun) This group released three wonderful albums of this caliber, but I prefer their debut slightly over the other two. This CD is not just for "surf music" fans, it is an album for anyone who simply enjoys the fun and joy of music. This album is the perfect cure for anyone who is having a bad day, and I highly recommend it to true music lovers in general. Any one of these instrumental songs speaks more words than a 1000 page novel.

Some voice.......2006-08-12

Few singers can match this man's voice. You can count 'em on two hands. This man is on the first set of five fingers. I regret never going to see him at The Palladium. But thank you Mr. Davis for recordings that are up there with the best in the business. Ron Shears.

Not Sammy's First Reprise Recording.......2006-04-05

As stated in the liner notes of this CD, there were two albums prior to this: "The Wham Of Sam", and "Sammy Davis Belts Out the Best Of Broadway", both from 1961. However this was the first commercially successful album that Davis had while at Reprise. Since the first two albums were virtually invisible to the record buying public by this time, they were quickly phased out of print, and the tracks (minus a few) were redistributed as filler in several later Sammy albums. This one was obviously a hasty attempt to cash in on the '62 hit "What Kind Of Fool Am I". The rest of the tracks are a 50/50 split of the previously mentioned albums. Because of this, Collector's Choice felt that Wham Of Sam, and Best Of Broadway weren't integral in representing Sammy's recording career at Reprise. Also missing from the CCM series is the "Golden Treasury Of Hits" from 1963, and "Sammy Steps Out" from 1970.

Fantastic!.......2002-08-24

The beautiful instrumentals combined with the voice of Robert Robinson are really inspiring. It's fun to crank some of these songs up in the car and sing along. The song selection goes from spiritual to classic rock to easy listening which is unusual, yet I can say that I really enjoy each one. If you like high quality music,you will like this.

The Show Stoppers/Lorie Line & Robert Robinson.......2002-06-02

This is not the norm for Lorie Line...but she has linked with Robert Robinson to create a great album. My favorite is Moon River where Lorie plays with the Pop Chamber Orchestra and then at the end, Robert sings the song. Incredible!!!
